Accurate recognition of rare and new words remains a pressing problem for contextualized Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems. Most context-biasing methods involve modification of the ASR model or the beam-search decoding algorithm, complicating model reuse and slowing down inference. This work presents a new approach to fast context-biasing with CTC-based Word Spotter (CTC-WS) for CTC and Transducer (RNN-T) ASR models. The proposed method matches CTC log-probabilities against a compact context graph to detect potential context-biasing candidates. The valid candidates then replace their greedy recognition counterparts in corresponding frame intervals. A Hybrid Transducer-CTC model enables the CTC-WS application for the Transducer model. The results demonstrate a significant acceleration of the context-biasing recognition with a simultaneous improvement in F-score and WER compared to baseline methods. The proposed method is publicly available in the NVIDIA NeMo toolkit.

The system predominantly comprises of the following integral modules: the Speaker Diarization Module, Multi-channel Audio Front-End Processing Module, and the ASR Module. These components collectively establish a cascading system, meticulously processing multi-channel and multi-speaker audio input. Moreover, this paper highlights the comprehensive optimization process that significantly enhanced our system's performance. The number of end-to-end speech recognition models grows every year. These models are often adapted to new domains or languages resulting in a proliferation of expert systems that achieve great results on target data, while generally showing inferior performance outside of their domain of expertise. We explore combination of such experts via confidence-based ensembles: ensembles of models where only the output of the most-confident model is used. We assume that models' target data is not available except for a small validation set. We demonstrate effectiveness of our approach with two applications. First, we show that a confidence-based ensemble of 5 monolingual models outperforms a system where model selection is performed via a dedicated language identification block. Second, we demonstrate that it is possible to combine base and adapted models to achieve strong results on both original and target data. We validate all our results on multiple datasets and model architectures.

Existing implementations of RNN-T use CUDA-related code, which is hard to extend and debug. WFSTs are easy to construct and extend, and allow debugging through visualization. We introduce two WFST-powered RNN-T implementations: (1) "Compose-Transducer", based on a composition of the WFST graphs from acoustic and textual schema -- computationally competitive and easy to modify; (2) "Grid-Transducer", which constructs the lattice directly for further computations -- most compact, and computationally efficient. We illustrate the ease of extensibility through introduction of a new W-Transducer loss -- the adaptation of the Connectionist Temporal Classification with Wild Cards. W-Transducer (W-RNNT) consistently outperforms the standard RNN-T in a weakly-supervised data setup with missing parts of transcriptions at the beginning and end of utterances. All RNN-T losses are implemented with the k2 framework and are available in the NeMo toolkit.

We show how per-frame entropy values can be normalized and aggregated to obtain a confidence measure per unit and per word for Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) and Recurrent Neural Network Transducer (RNN-T) models. Proposed methods have similar computational complexity to the traditional method based on the maximum per-frame probability, but they are more adjustable, have a wider effective threshold range, and better push apart the confidence distributions of correct and incorrect words. We evaluate the proposed confidence measures on LibriSpeech test sets, and show that they are up to 2 and 4 times better than confidence estimation based on the maximum per-frame probability at detecting incorrect words for Conformer-CTC and Conformer-RNN-T models, respectively.

This paper presents novel Weighted Finite-State Transducer (WFST) topologies to implement Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC)-like algorithms for automatic speech recognition. Three new CTC variants are proposed: (1) the "compact-CTC", in which direct transitions between units are replaced with <epsilon> back-off transitions; (2) the "minimal-CTC", that only adds <blank> self-loops when used in WFST-composition; and (3) the "selfless-CTC" variants, which disallows self-loop for non-blank units. Compact-CTC allows for 1.5 times smaller WFST decoding graphs and reduces memory consumption by two times when training CTC models with the LF-MMI objective without hurting the recognition accuracy. Minimal-CTC reduces graph size and memory consumption by two and four times for the cost of a small accuracy drop. Using selfless-CTC can improve the accuracy for wide context window models.

Neural network-based language models are commonly used in rescoring approaches to improve the quality of modern automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems. Most of the existing methods are computationally expensive since they use autoregressive language models. We propose a novel rescoring approach, which processes the entire lattice in a single call to the model. The key feature of our rescoring policy is a novel non-autoregressive Lattice Transformer Language Model (LT-LM). This model takes the whole lattice as an input and predicts a new language score for each arc. Additionally, we propose the artificial lattices generation approach to incorporate a large amount of text data in the LT-LM training process. Our single-shot rescoring performs orders of magnitude faster than other rescoring methods in our experiments. It is more than 300 times faster than pruned RNNLM lattice rescoring and N-best rescoring while slightly inferior in terms of WER.

With the rapid development of speech assistants, adapting server-intended automatic speech recognition (ASR) solutions to a direct device has become crucial. Researchers and industry prefer to use end-to-end ASR systems for on-device speech recognition tasks. This is because end-to-end systems can be made resource-efficient while maintaining a higher quality compared to hybrid systems. However, building end-to-end models requires a significant amount of speech data. Another challenging task associated with speech assistants is personalization, which mainly lies in handling out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words. In this work, we consider building an effective end-to-end ASR system in low-resource setups with a high OOV rate, embodied in Babel Turkish and Babel Georgian tasks. To address the aforementioned problems, we propose a method of dynamic acoustic unit augmentation based on the BPE-dropout technique. It non-deterministically tokenizes utterances to extend the token's contexts and to regularize their distribution for the model's recognition of unseen words. It also reduces the need for optimal subword vocabulary size search. The technique provides a steady improvement in regular and personalized (OOV-oriented) speech recognition tasks (at least 6% relative WER and 25% relative F-score) at no additional computational cost. Owing to the use of BPE-dropout, our monolingual Turkish Conformer established a competitive result with 22.2% character error rate (CER) and 38.9% word error rate (WER), which is close to the best published multilingual system.

The superior CEBAF electron beam will enable a flux on the order of $1\times 10^4~K_L/sec$, which exceeds the flux of that previously attained at SLAC by three orders of magnitude. The use of a deuteron target will provide first measurements ever with neutral kaons on neutrons. The experiment will measure both differential cross sections and self-analyzed polarizations of the produced $Λ$, $Σ$, $Ξ$, and $Ω$ hyperons using the GlueX detector at the Jefferson Lab Hall D. The measurements will span CM $\cosθ$ from $-0.95$ to 0.95 in the range W = 1490 MeV to 2500 MeV. The new data will significantly constrain the partial wave analyses and reduce model-dependent uncertainties in the extraction of the properties and pole positions of the strange hyperon resonances, and establish the orbitally excited multiplets in the spectra of the $Ξ$ and $Ω$ hyperons. Comparison with the corresponding multiplets in the spectra of the charm and bottom hyperons will provide insight into he accuracy of QCD-based calculations over a large range of masses. The proposed facility will have a defining impact in the strange meson sector through measurements of the final state $Kπ$ system up to 2 GeV invariant mass. This will allow the determination of pole positions and widths of all relevant $K^\ast(Kπ)$ $S$-,$P$-,$D$-,$F$-, and $G$-wave resonances, settle the question of the existence or nonexistence of scalar meson $κ/K_0^\ast(700)$ and improve the constrains on their pole parameters. Speaker diarization for real-life scenarios is an extremely challenging problem. Widely used clustering-based diarization approaches perform rather poorly in such conditions, mainly due to the limited ability to handle overlap** speech. We propose a novel Target-Speaker Voice Activity Detection (TS-VAD) approach, which directly predicts an activity of each speaker on each time frame. TS-VAD model takes conventional speech features (e.g., MFCC) along with i-vectors for each speaker as inputs. A set of binary classification output layers produces activities of each speaker. I-vectors can be estimated iteratively, starting with a strong clustering-based diarization. We also extend the TS-VAD approach to the multi-microphone case using a simple attention mechanism on top of hidden representations extracted from the single-channel TS-VAD model. Moreover, post-processing strategies for the predicted speaker activity probabilities are investigated. Experiments on the CHiME-6 unsegmented data show that TS-VAD achieves state-of-the-art results outperforming the baseline x-vector-based system by more than 30% Diarization Error Rate (DER) abs.

Data augmentation is one of the most effective ways to make end-to-end automatic speech recognition (ASR) perform close to the conventional hybrid approach, especially when dealing with low-resource tasks. Using recent advances in speech synthesis (text-to-speech, or TTS), we build our TTS system on an ASR training database and then extend the data with synthesized speech to train a recognition model. We argue that, when the training data amount is relatively low, this approach can allow an end-to-end model to reach hybrid systems' quality. For an artificial low-to-medium-resource setup, we compare the proposed augmentation with the semi-supervised learning technique. We also investigate the influence of vocoder usage on final ASR performance by comparing Griffin-Lim algorithm with our modified LPCNet. When applied with an external language model, our approach outperforms a semi-supervised setup for LibriSpeech test-clean and only 33% worse than a comparable supervised setup. Our system establishes a competitive result for end-to-end ASR trained on LibriSpeech train-clean-100 set with WER 4.3% for test-clean and 13.5% for test-other.

While end-to-end ASR systems have proven competitive with the conventional hybrid approach, they are prone to accuracy degradation when it comes to noisy and low-resource conditions. In this paper, we argue that, even in such difficult cases, some end-to-end approaches show performance close to the hybrid baseline. To demonstrate this, we use the CHiME-6 Challenge data as an example of challenging environments and noisy conditions of everyday speech. We experimentally compare and analyze CTC-Attention versus RNN-Transducer approaches along with RNN versus Transformer architectures. We also provide a comparison of acoustic features and speech enhancements. Besides, we evaluate the effectiveness of neural network language models for hypothesis re-scoring in low-resource conditions. Our best end-to-end model based on RNN-Transducer, together with improved beam search, reaches quality by only 3.8% WER abs. worse than the LF-MMI TDNN-F CHiME-6 Challenge baseline. With the Guided Source Separation based training data augmentation, this approach outperforms the hybrid baseline system by 2.7% WER abs. and the end-to-end system best known before by 25.7% WER abs.

The problem of out of vocabulary words (OOV) is typical for any speech recognition system, hybrid systems are usually constructed to recognize a fixed set of words and rarely can include all the words that will be encountered during exploitation of the system. One of the popular approach to cover OOVs is to use subword units rather then words. Such system can potentially recognize any previously unseen word if the word can be constructed from present subword units, but also non-existing words can be recognized. The other popular approach is to modify HMM part of the system so that it can be easily and effectively expanded with custom set of words we want to add to the system. In this paper we explore different existing methods of this solution on both graph construction and search method levels. We also present a novel vocabulary expansion techniques which solve some common internal subroutine problems regarding recognition graph processing.

The Kaon Production Target (KPT) is an important component of the proposed K-Long facility which will be operated in JLab Hall~D, targeting strange baryon and meson spectroscopy. In this note we present a conceptual design for the Be-target assembly for the planned K-Long beam line, which will be used along with the GlueX spectrometer in its standard configuration for the proposed experiments. The high quality 12-GeV CEBAF electron beam enables production of a K$_L$ flux at the GlueX target on the order of $1\times 10^4 K_L/sec$, which exceeds the K$_L$ flux previously attained at SLAC by three orders of magnitude. An intense K$_L$ beam would open a new window of opportunity not only to locate "missing resonances" in the strange hadron spectrum, but also to establish their properties by studying different decay channels systematically. The most important and radiation damaging background in K$_L$ production is due to neutrons. The Monte Carlo simulations for the proposed conceptual design of KPT show that the resulting neutron and gamma flux lead to a prompt radiation dose rate for the KLF experiment that is below the JLab Radiation Control Department radiation dose rate limits in the experimental hall and at the site boundary, and will not substantially affect the performance of the spectrometer.

This paper is devoted to a collection of results on nonlinear interpolation inequalities associated with Schr{ö}dinger operators involving Aharonov-Bohm magnetic potentials, and to some consequences. As symmetry plays an important role for establishing optimality results, we shall consider various cases corresponding to a circle, a two-dimensional sphere or a two-dimensional torus, and also the Euclidean spaces of dimensions two and three. Most of the results are new and we put the emphasis on the methods, as very little is known on symmetry, rigidity and optimality in presence of a magnetic field. The most spectacular applications are new magnetic Hardy inequalities in dimensions 2 and 3.

This paper is devoted to the symmetry and symmetry breaking properties of a two-dimensional magnetic Schr{ö}dinger operator involving an Aharonov-Bohm magnetic vector potential. We investigate the symmetry properties of the optimal potential for the corresponding magnetic Keller-Lieb-Thir-ring inequality. We prove that this potential is radially symmetric if the intensity of the magnetic field is below an explicit threshold, while symmetry is broken above a second threshold corresponding to a higher magnetic field. The method relies on the study of the magnetic kinetic energy of the wave function and amounts to study the symmetry properties of the optimal functions in a magnetic Hardy-Sobolev interpolation inequality. We give a quantified range of symmetry by a non-perturbative method. To establish the symmetry breaking range, we exploit the coupling of the phase and of the modulus and also obtain a quantitative result.

The normalized $^{238}$U(n,f)/$^{235}$U(n,f) cross section ratio has been measured using the NIFFTE fission Time Projection Chamber from the reaction threshold to $30$~MeV. The fissionTPC is a two-volume MICROMEGAS time projection chamber that allows for full three-dimensional reconstruction of fission-fragment ionization profiles from neutron-induced fission. The measurement was performed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, where the neutron energy is determined from neutron time-of-flight. The $^{238}$U(n,f)/$^{235}$U(n,f) ratio reported here is the first cross section measurement made with the fissionTPC, and will provide new experimental data for evaluation of the $^{238}$U(n,f) cross section, an important standard used in neutron-flux measurements. Use of a development target in this work prevented the determination of an absolute normalization, to be addressed in future measurements. Instead, the measured cross section ratio has been normalized to ENDF/B-VIII.$β$5 at 14.5 MeV.

A technique for establishing the total neutron rate of a highly-collimated monochromatic cold neutron beam was demonstrated using a method of an alpha-gamma counter. The method involves only the counting of measured rates and is independent of neutron cross sections, decay chain branching ratios, and neutron beam energy. For the measurement, a target of 10B-enriched boron carbide totally absorbed the neutrons in a monochromatic beam, and the rate of absorbed neutrons was determined by counting 478keV gamma rays from neutron capture on 10B with calibrated high-purity germanium detectors. A second measurement based on Bragg diffraction from a perfect silicon crystal was performed to determine the mean de Broglie wavelength of the beam to a precision of 0.024 %. With these measurements, the detection efficiency of a neutron monitor based on neutron absorption on 6Li was determined to an overall uncertainty of 0.058 %. We discuss the principle of the alpha-gamma method and present details of how the measurement was performed including the systematic effects. We also describe how this method may be used for applications in neutron dosimetry and metrology, fundamental neutron physics, and neutron cross section measurements.

We study bounds on the Riesz means of the mixed Steklov-Neumann and Steklov-Dirichlet eigenvalue problem on a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The Steklov-Neumann eigenvalue problem is also called the sloshing problem. We obtain two-term asymptotically sharp lower bounds on the Riesz means of the sloshing problem and also provide an asymptotically sharp upper bound for the Riesz means of mixed Steklov-Dirichlet problem. The proof of our results for the sloshing problem uses the average variational principle and monotonicity of sloshing eigenvalues. In the case of Steklov-Dirichlet eigenvalue problem, the proof is based on a well-known bound on the Riesz means of the Dirichlet fractional Laplacian and an inequality between the Dirichlet and Navier fractional Laplacian. The two-term asymptotic results for the Riesz means of mixed Steklov eigenvalue problems are discussed in the appendix which in particular show the asymptotic sharpness of the bounds we obtain.

For an arbitrary open, nonempty, bounded set $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $n \in \mathbb{N}$, and sufficiently smooth coefficients $a,b,q$, we consider the closed, strictly positive, higher-order differential operator $A_{Ω, 2m} (a,b,q)$ in $L^2(Ω)$ defined on $W_0^{2m,2}(Ω)$, associated with the higher-order differential expression $$ τ_{2m} (a,b,q) := \bigg(\sum_{j,k=1}^{n} (-i \partial_j - b_j) a_{j,k} (-i \partial_k - b_k)+q\bigg)^m, \quad m \in \mathbb{N}, $$ and its Krein--von Neumann extension $A_{K, Ω, 2m} (a,b,q)$ in $L^2(Ω)$. Denoting by $N(λ; A_{K, Ω, 2m} (a,b,q))$, $λ> 0$, the eigenvalue counting function corresponding to the strictly positive eigenvalues of $A_{K, Ω, 2m} (a,b,q)$, we derive the bound $$ N(λ; A_{K, Ω, 2m} (a,b,q)) \leq C v_n (2π)^{-n} \bigg(1+\frac{2m}{2m+n}\bigg)^{n/(2m)} λ^{n/(2m)} , \quad λ> 0, $$ where $C = C(a,b,q,Ω)>0$ (with $C(I_n,0,0,Ω) = |Ω|$) is connected to the eigenfunction expansion of the self-adjoint operator $\widetilde A_{2m} (a,b,q)$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$ defined on $W^{2m,2}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, corresponding to $τ_{2m} (a,b,q)$. Here $v_n := π^{n/2}/Γ((n+2)/2)$ denotes the (Euclidean) volume of the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$.
Our method of proof relies on variational considerations exploiting the fundamental link between the Krein--von Neumann extension and an underlying abstract buckling problem, and on the distorted Fourier transform defined in terms of the eigenfunction transform of $\widetilde A_{2} (a,b,q)$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$.
We also consider the analogous bound for the eigenvalue counting function for the Friedrichs extension $A_{F,Ω, 2m} (a,b,q)$ in $L^2(Ω)$ of $A_{Ω, 2m} (a,b,q)$.
No assumptions on the boundary $\partial Ω$ of $Ω$ are made.

We investigate Weyl type asymptotics of functional-difference operators associated to mirror curves of special del Pezzo Calabi-Yau threefolds. These operators are $H(ζ)=U+U^{-1}+V+ζV^{-1}$ and $H_{m,n}=U+V+q^{-mn}U^{-m}V^{-n}$, where $U$ and $V$ are self-adjoint Weyl operators satisfying $UV=q^{2}VU$ with $q=e^{iπb^{2}}$, $b>0$ and $ζ>0$, $m,n\in\mathbb{N}$. We prove that $H(ζ)$ and $H_{m,n}$ are…

We investigate Weyl type asymptotics of functional-difference operators associated to mirror curves of special del Pezzo Calabi-Yau threefolds. These operators are $H(ζ)=U+U^{-1}+V+ζV^{-1}$ and $H_{m,n}=U+V+q^{-mn}U^{-m}V^{-n}$, where $U$ and $V$ are self-adjoint Weyl operators satisfying $UV=q^{2}VU$ with $q=e^{iπb^{2}}$, $b>0$ and $ζ>0$, $m,n\in\mathbb{N}$. We prove that $H(ζ)$ and $H_{m,n}$ are self-adjoint operators with purely discrete spectrum on $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$. Using the coherent state transform we find the asymptotical behaviour for the Riesz mean $\sum_{j\ge 1}(λ-λ_{j})_{+}$ as $λ\to\infty$ and prove the Weyl law for the eigenvalue counting function $N(λ)$ for these operators, which imply that their inverses are of trace class.
