Determination of the quark mass ratio $Q$ from $η\to 3 π$
Authors:
Stefan Lanz
Abstract:
The decay $η\to 3 π$ proceeds exclusively through isospin violating operators and is therefore an excellent probe to examine the strength of isospin breaking in the strong interaction. The latter can be expressed through the quark mass ratio $Q^2 = (m_s^2 - \hat{m}^2)/(m_d^2 - m_u^2)$. The main object of this thesis is to analyse the decay $η\to 3 π$ using dispersion relations in order to extract…

The main object of this thesis is to analyse the decay $η\to 3 π$ using dispersion relations in order to extract $Q$ as well as other physical quantities. The dispersion relations are a set of integral equations that lead to a representation of the decay amplitude in terms of four unknown subtraction constants. We apply two different methods to determine these. Following the procedure of Anisovich and Leutwyler, we match our dispersive representation to the one-loop result from chiral perturbation theory, thus updating their old analysis. In addition, we also make use of the recent experimental determination of the Dalitz distribution by the KLOE collaboration to obtain information on the subtraction constants. In this way we find $Q = 21.31^{+0.59}_{-0.50}$.

Abstract:
The dispersive analysis of the decay $η\to3π$ is reviewed and thoroughly updated with the aim of determining the quark mass ratio ~$Q^2=(m_s^2-m_{ud}^2)/(m_d^2-m_u^2)$. With the number of subtractions we are using, the effects generated by the final state interaction are dominated by low energy $ππ$ scattering. Since the corresponding phase shifts are now accurately known, causality and unitarity determine the decay amplitude within small uncertainties -- except for the values of the subtraction constants. Our determination of these constants relies on the Dalitz plot distribution of the charged channel, which is now measured with good accuracy. The theoretical constraints that follow from the fact that the particles involved in the transition represent Nambu-Goldstone bosons of a hidden approximate symmetry play an equally important role. The ensuing predictions for the Dalitz plot distribution of the neutral channel and for the branching ratio $Γ_{η\to3π^0}/ Γ_{η\toπ^+π^-π^0}$ are in very good agreement with experiment. Relying on a known low-energy theorem that relates the meson masses to the masses of the three lightest quarks, our analysis leads to $Q=22.1(7)$, where the error covers all of the uncertainties encountered in the course of the calculation: experimental uncertainties in decay rates and Dalitz plot distributions, noise in the input used for the phase shifts, as well as theoretical uncertainties in the constraints imposed by chiral symmetry and in the evaluation of isospin breaking effects. Our result indicates that the current algebra formulae for the meson masses only receive small corrections from higher orders of the chiral expansion, but not all of the recent lattice results are consistent with this conclusion.

Abstract:
The $η\to 3 π$ amplitude is sensitive to the quark mass difference $m_u-m_d$ and offers a unique way to determine the quark mass ratio $Q^2 \equiv (m_s^2-m_{ud}^2)/(m_d^2-m_u^2)$ from experiment. We calculate the amplitude dispersively and fit the KLOE data on the charged mode, varying the subtraction constants in the range allowed by chiral perturbation theory. The parameter-free predictions obtained for the neutral Dalitz plot and the neutral-to-charged branching ratio are in excellent agreement with experiment. Our representation of the transition amplitude implies $Q = 22.0 \pm 0.7$.

We extend earlier work on leading logarithms in the massive nonlinear O(n) sigma model to the case of SU(N)xSU(N)/SU(N) which coincides with mesonic chiral perturbation theory for N flavours of light quarks. We discuss the leading logarithms for the mass and decay constant to six loops and for the vacuum expectation value <\bar{q}q> to seven loops. For dynamical quantities the expressions grow extremely large much faster such that we only quote the leading logarithms to five loops for the vector and scalar form factor and for meson-meson scattering. The last quantity we consider is the vector-vector to meson-meson amplitude where we quote results up to four loops for a subset of quantities, in particular for the pion polarizabilities. As a side result we provide an elementary proof that the factors of N appearing at each loop order are odd or even depending on the order and the remaining traces over external flavours.

In addition, for many years now theory has had difficulties to understand the slope of the neutral channel Dalitz plot distribution, which in contrast is very well measured. I discuss here the relation of the decay to the masses of the light quarks and review a number of theoretical and experimental works that are concerned with these questions.

We apply the resummed version of the Lüscher formula to analyze finite volume corrections to the mass of the nucleon and of heavy mesons. We show that by applying the subthreshold expansion of the scattering amplitudes one can express the finite volume corrections in terms of only a few physical observables and the size of the box. In the case of the nucleon, the available information about the quark mass dependence of these physical quantities is discussed and used to assess the finite volume corrections to the nucleon mass as a function of the quark mass including a detailed analysis of the remaining uncertainties. For heavy mesons, the Lüscher formula is derived both fully relativistically and in a nonrelativistic approximation and a first attempt at a numerical analysis is made.

Abstract:
We present a new dispersive analysis of the isospin breaking decay eta --> 3 pi. The resulting representation of the decay amplitude allows us to determine the quark mass double ratio Q and we find as a preliminary result Q = 22.3 +/- 0.4. Finally, we discuss a number of improvements that we intend to implement in the future.
