Consistent inference of the electron density and temperature has been carried out with multiple heterogeneous plasma diagnostic data sets at Wendelstein 7-X. The predictive models of the interferometer, Thomson scattering and helium beam emission spectroscopy systems have been developed in the Minerva framework and combined to a single joint model. The electron density and temperature profiles are modelled by Gaussian processes with their hyperparameters. The model parameters such as the calibration factor of the Thomson scattering system and the model predictive uncertainties are regarded as additional unknown parameters. The joint posterior probability distribution of the electron density and temperature profiles, hyperparameters of the Gaussian processes and model parameters is explored by Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms. The posterior samples drawn from the joint posterior distribution are numerically marginalised over the hyperparameters and model parameters to obtain the marginal posterior distributions of the electron density and temperature profiles. The inference of these profiles is performed with different combinations of the interferometer and Thomson scattering data as well as either the empirical electron density and temperature constraints at the limiter/divertor positions introduced by \textit{virtual observations} or the edge density and temperature from the helium beam emission data. Furthermore, the addition of the X-ray imaging crystal spectrometers to the joint model for the ion temperature profiles is demonstrated. All these profiles presented in this work are inferred with the optimal hyperparameters and model parameters by exploring the full joint posterior distribution which intrinsically embodies Bayesian Occam's razor.

In the Wendelstein 7-X magnetic confinement experiment, a reduction of turbulent density fluctuations as well as anomalous impurity diffusion is associated with a peaking of the plasma density profile. These effects correlate with improved confinement and appear largely due to a reduction of anomalous transport as the change in neoclassical transport is small. The observed decrease of turbulent heat flux with increased density gradients is in agreement with nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations, and has been attributed to the unique geometry of W7-X that limits the severity of trapped electron modes.

Reduction of particle and heat fluxes to plasma facing components is critical to achieve stable conditions for both the plasma and the plasma material interface in magnetic confinement fusion experiments. A stable and reproducible plasma state in which the heat flux is almost completely removed from the material surfaces was discovered recently in the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator experiment. At the same time also particle fluxes are reduced such that material erosion can be mitigated. Sufficient neutral pressure was reached to maintain stable particle exhaust for density control in this plasma state. This regime could be maintained for up to 28 seconds with a minimum feedback control.

The size dependent electronic structure and separate spin and orbital magnetic moments of free Co$_n^+$ ($n = 4\;\textrm{-}\;9$) cluster ions have been investigated by x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy in a cryogenic ion trap. A very large orbital magnetic moment of $1.4\pm0.1\;μ_{\mathrm B}$ per atom was determined for Co$_5^+$, which is one order of magnitude larger than in the bulk metal. Large orbital magnetic moments per atom of $\approx 1\;μ_B$ were also determined for Co$_4^+$, Co$_6^+$, and Co$_8^+$. The orbital contribution to the total magnetic moment shows a non-monotonic cluster size dependence: The orbital contribution increases from a local minimum at $n = 2$ to a local maximum at $n = 5$ and then decreases with increasing cluster size. The $3d$ spin magnetic moment per atom is nearly constant and is solely defined by the number of $3d$ holes which shows that the $3d$ majority spin states are fully occupied, that is, $3d$ hole spin polarization is 100%.

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy has been used to characterize the electronic structure and magnetic moment of Cr$_2^+$. Our results indicate that the removal of a single electron from the $4sσ_g$ bonding orbital of Cr$_2$ drastically changes the preferred coupling of the $3d$ electronic spins. While the neutral molecule has a zero-spin ground state with a very short bond length, the molecular cation exhibits a ferromagnetically coupled ground state with the highest possible spin of $S=11/2$, and almost twice the bond length of the neutral molecule. This spin configuration can be interpreted as a result of indirect exchange coupling between the $3d$ electrons of the two atoms that is mediated by the single $4s$ electron through a strong intraatomic $3d$-$4s$ exchange interaction. Our finding allows an estimate of the relative energies of two states that are often discussed as ground-state candidates, the ferromagnetically coupled $^{12}Σ$ and the low-spin $^2Σ$ state.

Three candidates, $^6Φ$, $^8Φ$, and $^8Γ$, for the electronic ground state of Fe$_2^+$ have been identified. These states carry sizable orbital angular momenta that disagree with theoretical predictions from multireference configuration interaction and density functional theory. Our results show that the ground states of neutral and cationic diatomic molecules of $3d$ transition elements cannot generally be assumed to be connected by a one-electron process.

The electronic structure and magnetic moments of free Mn$_2^+$ and Mn$_3^+$ are characterized by $2p$ x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy in a cryogenic ion trap that is coupled to a synchrotron radiation beamline. Our results show directly that localized magnetic moments of 5 $μ_B$ are created by $3d^5 (^6\mathrm{S})$ states at each ionic core, which are coupled in parallel to form molecular high-spin states via indirect exchange that is mediated in both cases by a delocalized valence electron in a singly-occupied $4s$ derived orbital with an unpaired spin. This leads to total magnetic moments of 11 $μ_B$ for Mn$_2^+$ and 16 $μ_B$ for Mn$_3^+$, with no contribution of orbital angular momentum.

Spin and orbital magnetic moments of cationic iron, cobalt, and nickel clusters have been determined from x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. In the size regime of $n = 10 - 15$ atoms, these clusters show strong ferromagnetism with maximized spin magnetic moments of 1~$μ_B$ per empty $3d$ state because of completely filled $3d$ majority spin bands. The only exception is $\mathrm{Fe}_{13}^+$ where an unusually low average spin magnetic moment of $0.73 \pm 0.12$~$μ_B$ per unoccupied $3d$ state is detected; an effect, which is neither observed for $\mathrm{Co}_{13}^+$ nor $\mathrm{Ni}_{13}^+$.\@ This distinct behavior can be linked to the existence and accessibility of antiferromagnetic, paramagnetic, or nonmagnetic phases in the respective bulk phase diagrams of iron, cobalt, and nickel. Compared to the experimental data, available density functional theory calculations generally seem to underestimate the spin magnetic moments significantly. In all clusters investigated, the orbital magnetic moment is quenched to $5 - 25$\,\% of the atomic value by the reduced symmetry of the crystal field. The magnetic anisotropy energy is well below 65 $μ$eV per atom.

The magnetic moment of a single impurity atom in a finite free electron gas is studied in a combined x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy and density functional theory study of size-selected free chromium-doped gold clusters. The observed size-dependence of the local magnetic moment can essentially be understood in terms of the Anderson impurity model. Electronic shell closure in the host metal minimizes the interaction of localized impurity states with the confined free electron gas and preserves the full magnetic moment of $\unit[5]{μ_B}$ in $\mathrm{CrAu}_{2}^{+}$ and $\mathrm{CrAu}_{6}^{+}$ clusters. Even for open-shell species, large local moments are observed that scale with the energy gap of the gold cluster. This indicates that an energy gap in the free electron gas generally stabilizes the local magnetic moment of the impurity.

The interaction of a single manganese impurity with silicon is analyzed in a combined experimental and theoretical study of the electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of manganese-doped silicon clusters. The structural transition from exohedral to endohedral do** coincides with a quenching of high-spin states. For all geometric structures investigated, we find a similar dependence of the magnetic moment on the manganese coordination number and nearest neighbor distance. This observation can be generalized to manganese point defects in bulk silicon, whose magnetic moments fall within the observed magnetic-to-nonmagnetic transition, and which therefore react very sensitively to changes in the local geometry. The results indicate that high spin states in manganese-doped silicon could be stabilized by an appropriate lattice expansion.
