Biased stochastic estimators, such as finite-differences for noisy gradient estimation, often contain parameters that need to be properly chosen to balance impacts from the bias and the variance. While the optimal order of these parameters in terms of the simulation budget can be readily established, the precise best values depend on model characteristics that are typically unknown in advance. We introduce a framework to construct new classes of estimators, based on judicious combinations of simulation runs on sequences of tuning parameter values, such that the estimators consistently outperform a given tuning parameter choice in the conventional approach, regardless of the unknown model characteristics. We argue the outperformance via what we call the asymptotic minimax risk ratio, obtained by minimizing the worst-case asymptotic ratio between the mean square errors of our estimators and the conventional one, where the worst case is over any possible values of the model unknowns. In particular, when the minimax ratio is less than 1, the calibrated estimator is guaranteed to perform better asymptotically. We identify this minimax ratio for general classes of weighted estimators, and the regimes where this ratio is less than 1. Moreover, we show that the best weighting scheme is characterized by a sum of two components with distinct decay rates. We explain how this arises from bias-variance balancing that combats the adversarial selection of the model constants, which can be analyzed via a tractable reformulation of a non-convex optimization problem.

Distinguishing diagnostic observational signatures produced by MHD models is essential in understanding the physics for the formation of protostellar disks in the ALMA era. Develo** suitable tools along with time evolution will facilitate better identification of diagnostic features. With a ray-tracing based radiative transfer code Perspective, we explore time evolution of MHD models carried out in Li, Krasnopolsky & Shang (2013) - most of which have $90^\circ$ misalignment between the rotational axis and the magnetic field. Four visible object types can be characterized, origins of which are dependent on the initial conditions. Our results show complex spiraling density, velocity and polarization structures. The systems are under constant change, but many of those distinctive features are present already early on, and they grow more visible in time, but most could not be identified from the data without examining their change in time. The results suggest that spiraling pseudodisk structures could function as an effective observation signature of the formation process, and we witness accretion in the disk with eccentric orbits which appear as spiral-like perturbation from simple circular Keplerian orbits. Magnetically aligned polarization appears purely azimuthal in the disk and magnetic field can lead to precession of the disk.

We study 3d and 4d systems with a one-form global symmetry, explore their consequences, and analyze their gauging. For simplicity, we focus on $\mathbb{Z}_N$ one-form symmetries. A 3d topological quantum field theory (TQFT) $\mathcal{T}$ with such a symmetry has $N$ special lines that generate it. The braiding of these lines and their spins are characterized by a single integer $p$ modulo $2N$. Surprisingly, if $\gcd(N,p)=1$ the TQFT factorizes $\mathcal{T}=\mathcal{T}'\otimes \mathcal{A}^{N,p}$. Here $\mathcal{T}'$ is a decoupled TQFT, whose lines are neutral under the global symmetry and $\mathcal{A}^{N,p}$ is a minimal TQFT with the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ one-form symmetry of label $p$. The parameter $p$ labels the obstruction to gauging the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ one-form symmetry; i.e.\ it characterizes the 't Hooft anomaly of the global symmetry. When $p=0$ mod $2N$, the symmetry can be gauged. Otherwise, it cannot be gauged unless we couple the system to a 4d bulk with gauge fields extended to the bulk. This understanding allows us to consider $SU(N)$ and $PSU(N)$ 4d gauge theories. Their dynamics is gapped and it is associated with confinement and oblique confinement -- probe quarks are confined. In the $PSU(N)$ theory the low-energy theory can include a discrete gauge theory. We will study the behavior of the theory with a space-dependent $θ$-parameter, which leads to interfaces. Typically, the theory on the interface is not confining. Furthermore, the liberated probe quarks are anyons on the interface. The $PSU(N)$ theory is obtained by gauging the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ one-form symmetry of the $SU(N)$ theory. Our understanding of the symmetries in 3d TQFTs allows us to describe the interface in the $PSU(N)$ theory.

The masses of $^{56}$Cu, $^{52g,52m}$Co, and $^{44m}$V were measured for the first time in this experiment. The Mass Excesses ($ME^{\prime}$s) of $^{44}$V, $^{48}$Mn, $^{50}$Fe, and $^{54}$Ni are determined with an order of magnitude improved precision compared to the literature values. $^{52g,52m}$Co and $^{56}$Cu are found to be $370$~keV and $400$~keV more bound, respectively, while $^{44g,44m}$V are $\sim 300$~keV less bound than the extrapolations in the Atomic-Mass Evaluation 2012 (AME$^{\prime}$12). The masses of the four $T_z=-1/2$ nuclei $^{45}$V, $^{47}$Cr, $^{49}$Mn, and $^{51}$Fe are re-determined to be in agreement, within the experimental errors, with the recent JYFLTRAP measurements or with the previous IMS measurements in CSRe. Details of the measurements and data analysis are described, and the impact of the new $ME$ values on different aspects in nuclear structure are investigated and discussed.

In stochastic simulation, input uncertainty refers to the output variability arising from the statistical noise in specifying the input models. This uncertainty can be measured by a variance contribution in the output, which, in the nonparametric setting, is commonly estimated via the bootstrap. However, due to the convolution of the simulation noise and the input noise, the bootstrap consists of a two-layer sampling and typically requires substantial simulation effort. This paper investigates a subsampling framework to reduce the required effort, by leveraging the form of the variance and its estimation error in terms of the data size and the sampling requirement in each layer. We show how the total required effort can be reduced from an order bigger than the data size in the conventional approach to an order independent of the data size in subsampling. We explicitly identify the procedural specifications in our framework that guarantee relative consistency in the estimation, and the corresponding optimal simulation budget allocations. We substantiate our theoretical results with numerical examples.

We study a statistical method to estimate the optimal value, and the optimality gap of a given solution for stochastic optimization as an assessment of the solution quality. Our approach is based on bootstrap aggregating, or bagging, resampled sample average approximation (SAA). We show how this approach leads to valid statistical confidence bounds for non-smooth optimization. We also demonstrate its statistical efficiency and stability that are especially desirable in limited-data situations, and compare these properties with some existing methods. We present our theory that views SAA as a kernel in an infinite-order symmetric statistic, which can be approximated via bagging. We substantiate our theoretical findings with numerical results.

Background: Beta-decay spectroscopy provides valuable nuclear physics input for thermonuclear reaction rates of astrophysical interest and stringent test for shell-model theories far from the stability line. Purpose: The available decay properties of proton drip-line nucleus $^{27}$S is insufficient to constrain the properties of the key resonance in $^{26}$Si$(p,γ)^{27}$P reaction rate and probe the possible isospin asymmetry. The decay scheme of $^{27}$S is complicated and far from being understood, which has motivated but also presented challenges for our experiment. Method: The $^{27}$S ions were implanted into a double-sided silicon strip detector array surrounded by the high-purity germanium detectors, where the $β$-delayed protons and $γ$ rays were measured simultaneously. Results: The improved spectroscopic properties including the precise half-life of $^{27}$S, the excitation energies, $β$-decay branching ratios, log~$ft$ values, and $B$(GT) values for the states of $^{27}$P populated in the $β$ decay of $^{27}$S were measured and compared to the $^{27}$Mg mirror states and the shell-model calculations. The present work has expanded greatly on the previously established decay scheme of $^{27}$S. Conclusions: The precise proton-separation energy of $^{27}$P, the energy and the ratio between $γ$ and proton partial widths of the $3/2^+$ resonance were obtained, thereby determining the $^{26}$Si$(p,γ)^{27}$P reaction rate based mainly on experimental constraints. The first evidence for the observation of a large isospin asymmetry for the mirror decays of $^{27}$S and $^{27}$Na is also provided. The experimental spectroscopic information can be reproduced by the shell-model calculation taking the weakly bound effect of the proton $1s_{1/2}$ orbit into account.

The mass of $^{27}$P was predicted to impact the X-ray burst (XRB) model predictions of burst light curves and the composition of the burst ashes. To address the uncertainties and inconsistencies in the reported $^{27}$P masses in literature, a wealth of information has been extracted from the $β$-decay spectroscopy of the drip-line nucleus $^{27}$S. We determine the most precise mass excess of $^{27}$P to date to be $-659(9)$~keV, which is 63~keV (2.3$σ$) higher than the AME2016 recommended value of $-722(26)$~keV. The experimentally unknown mass excess of $^{27}$S was estimated to be 17030(400)~keV in AME2016, and we constrain this mass to be 17678(77)~keV based on the measured $β$-delayed two-proton energy. In the temperature region of $(0.06-0.3)$~GK, the $^{26}$Si$(p,γ)^{27}$P reaction rate determined in this work is significantly lower than the rate recommended in the reaction rate libraries, up to two orders of magnitude around 0.1~GK. The impact of these newly determined masses and well-constrained rate on the modeling of the explosive astrophysical scenarios has been explored by hydrodynamic nova and post-processing XRB models. No substantial change was found in the nova contribution to the synthesis of galactic $^{26}$Al or in the XRB energy generation rate, but we found that the calculated abundances of $^{26}$Al and $^{26}$Si at the last stage of XRB are increased by a factor of 2.4. We also conclude that $^{27}$S is not a significant waiting point in the rapid proton capture process.

However, because of recent accidents caused by autonomous vehicles, it becomes controversial about whether on-road tests should be the best approach. Alternatively, people use test tracks or simulation to assess the safety of autonomous vehicles. These approaches are time-efficient and less costly, however, their credibility varies. We study the central charges and levels of a two-dimensional $N=(0,4)$ superconformal field theory describing four-dimensional BPS black holes in F-theory. These arise from D3-branes wrap** a curve in the base of an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold times a circle, and probe a transverse Taub-NUT space. The near horizon geometry of these D3-branes is AdS$_3 \times \text{S}^3/\mathbb{Z}_m$, where $m$ is the NUT charge. Starting from a six-dimensional supergravity effective action we compute three-dimensional Chern-Simons terms to deduce the central charges and levels. We find that it is crucial to integrate out an infinite tower of massive Kaluza-Klein states on S$^3/\mathbb{Z}_m$ to match the expected microscopic results. The induced corrections turn out to contribute at leading order to the central charges and levels, which in turn determine the black hole entropy.

The states are prepared by a euclidean path integral describing the evolution over two euclidean time segments separated by a local scaling operator $\mathcal{O}$. We argue that the holographic dual of this class of states consists of two black holes with their interior regions connected via a domain wall, described by the worldline of a massive particle. We compute the size of the interior region and the entanglement entropy as a function of the scale dimension of $\mathcal{O}$ and the temperature of each black hole. We argue that the one-sided bulk reconstruction can access the interior region of the black hole.

By analyzing the linear and quadratic coefficients of the IMME in the $T_z=-3/2$ $sd$-shell nuclei, it was found that the ratio of the Coulomb radius parameters is $R\approx0.96$ and is nearly the same for all $T=3/2$ isospin multiplets. Such a nearly constant $R$-value, apparently valid for the entire light mass region with $A>9$, can be used to set stringent constraints on the isovector and isotensor components of the isospin non-conserving forces in theoretical calculations.

Data preparation, i.e. the process of transforming raw data into a format that can be used for training effective machine learning models, is a tedious and time-consuming task. For image data, preprocessing typically involves a sequence of basic transformations such as crop**, filtering, rotating or flip** images. Currently, data scientists decide manually based on their experience which transformations to apply in which particular order to a given image data set. Besides constituting a bottleneck in real-world data science projects, manual image data preprocessing may yield suboptimal results as data scientists need to rely on intuition or trial-and-error approaches when exploring the space of possible image transformations and thus might not be able to discover the most effective ones. To mitigate the inefficiency and potential ineffectiveness of manual data preprocessing, this paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning framework to automatically discover the optimal data preprocessing steps for training an image classifier. The framework takes as input sets of labeled images and predefined preprocessing transformations. It jointly learns the classifier and the optimal preprocessing transformations for individual images. Experimental results show that the proposed approach not only improves the accuracy of image classifiers, but also makes them substantially more robust to noisy inputs at test time.

Exact results for its correlation functions were obtained in JHEP {\bf 1708}, 136 (2017) [arXiv:1705.08408]. We compare these results with bulk gravity expectations. We find that the semi-classical limit of the out-of-time-order (OTO) four-point function exactly matches with the scattering amplitude obtained from the Dray-'t Hooft shockwave $\mathcal{S}$-matrix. We show that the two point function of heavy operators reduces to the semi-classical saddle-point of the Schwarzian action. We also explain a previously noted match between the OTO four point functions and 2D conformal blocks. Generalizations to higher-point functions, and applications, are discussed.

The latter are significantly less bound than their literature values. Our new and accurate masses remove the irregularities of the mass surface in this region of the nuclear chart. Our results do not support the predicted island of pronounced low $α$ separation energies for neutron-deficient Mo and Tc isotopes, making the formation of Zr-Nb cycle in the $rp$-process unlikely. The new proton separation energy of $^{83}$Nb was determined to be 490(400)~keV smaller than that in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2012. This partly removes the overproduction of the $p$-nucleus $^{84}$Sr relative to the neutron-deficient molybdenum isotopes in the previous $νp$-process simulations.

We propose an approximation algorithm for efficient correlation search in time series data. In our method, we use Fourier transform and neural network to embed time series into a low-dimensional Euclidean space. The given space is learned such that time series correlation can be effectively approximated from Euclidean distance between corresponding embedded vectors. Therefore, search for correlated time series can be done using an index in the embedding space for efficient nearest neighbor search. Our theoretical analysis illustrates that our method's accuracy can be guaranteed under certain regularity conditions. We further conduct experiments on real-world datasets and the results show that our method indeed outperforms the baseline solution. In particular, for approximation of correlation, our method reduces the approximation loss by a half in most test cases compared to the baseline solution. For top-$k$ highest correlation search, our method improves the precision from 5\% to 20\% while the query time is similar to the baseline approach query time.

We first prove theoretically that finding the optimal features from relational data for predictive tasks is NP-hard. We propose an efficient rule-based approach based on heuristics and a deep neural network to automatically learn appropriate features from relational data. We benchmark our approaches in ensembles in past Kaggle competitions. Our new approach wins late medals and beats the state-of-the-art solutions with significant margins. We study general properties of the conformal basis, the space of wavefunctions in $(d+2)$-dimensional Minkowski space that are primaries of the Lorentz group $SO(1,d+1)$. Scattering amplitudes written in this basis have the same symmetry as $d$-dimensional conformal correlators. We translate the optical theorem, which is a direct consequence of unitarity, into the conformal basis. In the particular case of a tree-level exchange diagram, the optical theorem takes the form of a conformal block decomposition on the principal continuous series, with OPE coefficients being the three-point coupling written in the same basis. We further discuss the relation between the massless conformal basis and the bulk point singularity in AdS/CFT. Some three- and four-point amplitudes in (2+1) dimensions are explicitly computed in this basis to demonstrate these results.

We investigate the use of optimization to compute bounds for extremal performance measures. This approach takes a non-parametric viewpoint that aims to alleviate the issue of model misspecification possibly encountered by conventional methods in extreme event analysis. We make two contributions towards solving these formulations, paying especial attention to the arising tail issues. First, we provide a technique in parallel to Choquet's theory, via a combination of integration by parts and change of measures, to transform shape constrained problems (e.g., monotonicity of derivatives) into families of moment problems. Second, we show how a moment problem cast over infinite support can be reformulated into a problem over compact support with an additional slack variable. In the context of optimization over tail distributions, the latter helps resolve the issue of non-convergence of solutions when using algorithms such as generalized linear programming. We further demonstrate the applicability of this result to problems with infinite-value constraints, which can arise in modeling heavy tails.

Evaluation and validation of complicated control systems are crucial to guarantee usability and safety. Usually, failure happens in some very rarely encountered situations, but once triggered, the consequence is disastrous. Accelerated Evaluation is a methodology that efficiently tests those rarely-occurring yet critical failures via smartly-sampled test cases. The distribution used in sampling is pivotal to the performance of the method, but building a suitable distribution requires case-by-case analysis. This paper proposes a versatile approach for constructing sampling distribution using kernel method. The approach uses statistical learning tools to approximate the critical event sets and constructs distributions based on the unique properties of Gaussian distributions. We applied the method to evaluate the automated vehicles. Numerical experiments show proposed approach can robustly identify the rare failures and significantly reduce the evaluation time.

The vast majority of stochastic simulation models are imperfect in that they fail to exactly emulate real system dynamics. The inexactness of the simulation model, or model discrepancy, can impact the predictive accuracy and usefulness of the simulation for decision-making. This paper proposes a systematic framework to integrate data from both the simulation responses and the real system responses to learn this discrepancy and quantify the resulting uncertainty. Our framework addresses the theoretical and computational requirements for stochastic estimation in a Bayesian setting. It involves an optimization-based procedure to compute confidence bounds on the target outputs that elicit desirable large-sample statistical properties. We illustrate the practical value of our framework with a call center example and a manufacturing line case study.

Feature engineering is one of the most important and time consuming tasks in predictive analytics projects. It involves understanding domain knowledge and data exploration to discover relevant hand-crafted features from raw data. In this paper, we introduce a system called One Button Machine, or OneBM for short, which automates feature discovery in relational databases. OneBM automatically performs a key activity of data scientists, namely, joining of database tables and applying advanced data transformations to extract useful features from data. We validated OneBM in Kaggle competitions in which OneBM achieved performance as good as top 16% to 24% data scientists in three Kaggle competitions. More importantly, OneBM outperformed the state-of-the-art system in a Kaggle competition in terms of prediction accuracy and ranking on Kaggle leaderboard. The results show that OneBM can be useful for both data scientists and non-experts. It helps data scientists reduce data exploration time allowing them to try and error many ideas in short time. On the other hand, it enables non-experts, who are not familiar with data science, to quickly extract value from their data with a little effort, time and cost.

In this paper, we study a statistical framework to integrate data into RO, based on learning a prediction set using (combinations of) geometric shapes that are compatible with established RO tools, and a simple data-splitting validation step that achieves finite-sample nonparametric statistical guarantees on feasibility. In particular we prove a theorem that when a non-comoving, non-spacelike geodesic in a singular FLRW spacetime obeys conditions (39) and (40), every point on that geodesic is part of a pair of conjugate points. The proof is based on the Raychaudhuri equation. We find that the theorem is applicable to all non-comoving, non-spacelike geodesics in FLRW spacetimes with non-negative spatial curvature and scale factors that near the singularity have power law behavior or power law behavior times a logarithm. When the spatial curvature is negative, the theorem is applicable to a subset of these spacetimes.

It turns out that this commutant vertex operator algebra can be realized as a fixed point subalgebra of $L_{\hat{\frak{so}}_{n}}(m,0)$ (or its simple current extension) associated with a certain abelian group. This result may be viewed as a version of level-rank duality.

The process to certify highly Automated Vehicles has not yet been defined by any country in the world. Currently, companies test Automated Vehicles on public roads, which is time-consuming and inefficient. We proposed the Accelerated Evaluation concept, which uses a modified statistics of the surrounding vehicles and the Importance Sampling theory to reduce the evaluation time by several orders of magnitude, while ensuring the evaluation results are statistically accurate. In this paper, we further improve the accelerated evaluation concept by using Piecewise Mixture Distribution models, instead of Single Parametric Distribution models. We developed and applied this idea to forward collision control system reacting to vehicles making cut-in lane changes. The behavior of the cut-in vehicles was modeled based on more than 403,581 lane changes collected by the University of Michigan Safety Pilot Model Deployment Program. Simulation results confirm that the accuracy and efficiency of the Piecewise Mixture Distribution method outperformed single parametric distribution methods in accuracy and efficiency, and accelerated the evaluation process by almost four orders of magnitude.

Abstract:
We prove the conjectual isomorphism between the level $k$ $\widehat{sl}_2$-parafermion vertex operator algebra and the $(k+1,k+2)$ minimal series $W_k$-algebra for all integers $k \ge 2$. As a consequence, we obtain the conjectural isomorphism between the $(k+1,k+2)$ minimal series $W_k$-algebra and the coset vertex operator algebra $SU(k)_1 \otimes SU(k)_1/SU(k)_2$.

Moreover, a holomorphic vertex operator algebra of central charge 24 with weight one Lie algebra $F_{4,6}A_{2,2}$ is obtained by applying a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-orbifold construction to $U$. The uniqueness of such a vertex operator algebra is also established. By a similar method, we also established the uniqueness of a holomorphic vertex operator algebra of central charge 24 with the weight one Lie algebra $E_{7,3}A_{5,1}$. As a consequence, we verify that all $71$ Lie algebras in Schellekens' list can be realized as the weight one Lie algebras of some holomorphic vertex operator algebras of central charge $24$. In addition, we establish the uniqueness of three holomorphic vertex operator algebras of central charge $24$ whose weight one Lie algebras have the type $A_{8,3}A_{2,1}^2$, $F_{4,6}A_{2,2}$, and $E_{7,3}A_{5,1}$.

Smart living is a trending lifestyle that envisions lower energy consumption, sound public services, and better quality of life for human being. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a compelling platform connecting various sensors around us to the Internet, providing great opportunities for the realization of smart living. Spintronic sensors with superb measuring ability and multiple unique advantages can be an important piece of cornerstone for IoT. In this review, we discuss successful applications of spintronic sensors in electrical current sensing, transmission and distribution lines monitoring, vehicle detection, and biodetection. Traditional monitoring systems with limited sensors and wired communication can merely collect fragmented data in the application domains. In this paper, the wireless spintronic sensor networks (WSSNs) will be proposed and illustrated to provide pervasive monitoring systems, which facilitate the intelligent surveillance and management over building, power grid, transport, and healthcare. The database of collected information will be of great use to the policy making in public services and city planning. This work provides insights for realizing smart living through the integration of IoT with spintronic sensor technology.

Masses of $^{52g,52m}$Co were measured for the first time with an accuracy of $\sim 10$ keV, an unprecedented precision reached for short-lived nuclei in the isochronous mass spectrometry. Combining our results with the previous $β$-$γ$ measurements of $^{52}$Ni, the $T=2$, $J^π=0^+$ isobaric analog state (IAS) in $^{52}$Co was newly assigned, questioning the conventional identification of IASs from the $β$-delayed proton emissions. Using our energy of the IAS in $^{52}$Co, the masses of the $T=2$ multiplet fit well into the Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation. We find that the IAS in $^{52}$Co decays predominantly via $γ$ transitions while the proton emission is negligibly small. According to our large-scale shell model calculations, this phenomenon has been interpreted to be due to very low isospin mixing in the IAS.

The decay of the proton-rich nucleus $^{22}$Si was studied by a silicon array coupled with germanium clover detectors. Nine charged-particle groups are observed and most of them are recognized as $β$-delayed proton emission. A charged-particle group at 5600 keV is identified experimentally as $β$-delayed two-proton emission from the isobaric analog state of $^{22}$Al. Another charged-particle emission without any $β$ particle at the low energy less than 300 keV is observed. The half-life of $^{22}$Si is determined as 27.5 (18) ms. The experimental results of $β$-decay of $^{22}$Si are compared and in nice agreement with shell-model calculations. The mass excess of the ground state of $^{22}$Si deduced from the experimental data shows that three-nucleon (3N) forces with repulsive contributions have significant effects on nuclei near the proton drip line.
