Despite the immense popularity of the Automated Program Repair (APR) field, the question of patch validation is still open. Most of the present-day approaches follow the so-called Generate-and-Validate approach, where first a candidate solution is being generated and after validated against an oracle. The latter, however, might not give a reliable result, because of the imperfections in such oracles; one of which is usually the test suite. Although (re-) running the test suite is right under one's nose, in real life applications the problem of over- and underfitting often occurs, resulting in inadequate patches. Efforts that have been made to tackle with this problem include patch filtering, test suite expansion, careful patch producing and many more. Most approaches to date use post-filtering relying either on test execution traces or make use of some similarity concept measured on the generated patches. Our goal is to investigate the nature of these similarity-based approaches. To do so, we trained a Doc2Vec model on an open-source JavaScript project and generated 465 patches for 10 bugs in it. These plausible patches alongside with the developer fix are then ranked based on their similarity to the original program. We analyzed these similarity lists and found that plain document embeddings may lead to misclassification - it fails to capture nuanced code semantics. Nevertheless, in some cases it also provided useful information, thus hel** to better understand the area of Automated Program Repair.

We investigate a species selective cooling process of a trapped $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ Fermi gas using entropy redistribution during adiabatic loading of an optical lattice. Using high-temperature expansion of the Hubbard model, we show that when a subset $N_A < N$ of the single-atom levels experiences a stronger trap** potential in a certain region of space, the dimple, it leads to improvement in cooling as compared to a $\mathrm{SU}(N_A)$ Fermi gas only. We show that optimal performance is achieved when all atomic levels experience the same potential outside the dimple and we quantify the cooling for various $N_A$ by evaluating the dependence of the final entropy densities and temperatures as functions of the initial entropy. Furthermore, considering ${}^{87}{\rm Sr}$ and ${}^{173}{\rm Yb}$ for specificity, we provide a quantitative discussion of how the state selective trap** can be achieved with readily available experimental techniques.

Recently, SU(3) chains in the symmetric and self-conjugate representations have been studied using field theory techniques. For certain representations, namely rank-$p$ symmetric ones with $p$ not a multiple of 3, it was argued that the ground state exhibits gapless excitations. For the remaining representations considered, a finite energy gap exists above the ground state. In this paper, we extend these results to SU($n$) chains in the symmetric representation. For a rank-$p$ symmetric representation with $n$ and $p$ coprime, we predict gapless excitations above the ground state. If $p$ is a multiple of $n$, we predict a unique ground state with a finite energy gap. Finally, if $p$ and $n$ have a greatest common divisor $1<q<n$, we predict a ground state degeneracy of $n/q$, with a finite energy gap. To arrive at these results, we derive a non-Lorentz invariant flag manifold sigma model description of the SU($n$) chains, and use the renormalization group to show that Lorentz invariance is restored at low energies. We then make use of recently developed anomaly matching conditions for these Lorentz-invariant models. We also review the Lieb-Shultz-Mattis-Affleck theorem, and extend it to SU($n$) models with longer range interactions.

We provide numerical evidence in favor of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and the concomitant appearance of an Abelian chiral spin liquid for three-component fermions on the triangular lattice described by an SU(3) symmetric Hubbard model with hop** amplitude $-t$ ($t>0$) and on-site interaction $U$. This chiral phase is stabilized in the Mott phase with one particle per site in the presence of a uniform $π$-flux per plaquette, and in the Mott phase with two particles per site without any flux. Our approach relies on effective spin models derived in the strong-coupling limit in powers of $t/U$ for general SU$(N)$ and arbitrary uniform charge flux per plaquette, which are subsequently studied using exact diagonalizations and variational Monte Carlo simulations for $N=3$, as well as exact diagonalizations of the SU($3$) Hubbard model on small clusters. Up to third order in $t/U$, and for the time-reversal symmetric cases (flux $0$ or $π$), the low-energy description is given by the $J$-$K$ model with Heisenberg coupling $J$ and real ring exchange $K$. The phase diagram in the full $J$-$K$ parameter range contains, apart from three already known, magnetically long-range ordered phases, two previously unreported phases: i) a lattice nematic phase breaking the lattice rotation symmetry and ii) a spontaneous time-reversal and parity symmetry breaking Abelian chiral spin liquid. For the Hubbard model, an investigation that includes higher-order itinerancy effects supports the presence of a phase transition inside the insulating region, occurring at $(t/U)_{\rm c}\approx 0.07$ [$(U/t)_{\rm c} \approx 13$] between the three-sublattice magnetically ordered phase at small $t/U$ and this Abelian chiral spin liquid.

Using exact diagonalizations of finite clusters, infinite projected entangled pair states simulations, and variational Monte Carlo simulations based on Gutzwiller projected wave functions, we provide strong evidence in favour of the competing plaquette state, which was reported to be higher but close by in energy according to mean-field theory. This is further confirmed by the investigation of the model with a ring exchange term, which shows that there is a transition between the plaquette state and the chiral state at a finite value of the ring exchange term.

We show that, in the presence of a $π/2$ artificial gauge field per plaquette, Mott insulating phases of ultra-cold fermions with $SU(N)$ symmetry and one particle per site generically possess an extended chiral phase with intrinsic topological order characterized by a multiplet of $N$ low-lying singlet excitations for periodic boundary conditions, and by chiral edge states described by the $SU(N)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten conformal field theory for open boundary conditions. This has been achieved by extensive exact diagonalizations for $N$ between $3$ and $9$, and by a parton construction based on a set of $N$ Gutzwiller projected fermionic wave-functions with flux $π/N$ per triangular plaquette. Experimental implications are briefly discussed.

The SU(4) Heisenberg model can serve as a low energy model of the Mott insulating state in materials where the spins and orbitals are highly symmetric, or in systems of alkaline-earth atoms on optical lattice. Recently, it has been argued that on the honeycomb lattice the model exhibits a unique spin-orbital liquid phase with an algebraic decay of correlations [P. Corboz et al., Phys. Rev. X 2, 041013 (2012)]. Here we study the instability of the algebraic spin-orbital liquid toward spontaneous formation of SU(4) singlet plaquettes (tetramerization). Using a variational Monte Carlo approach to evaluate the projected wave-function of fermions with $π$-flux state, we find that the algebraic liquid is robust, and that a finite value of the next nearest exchange is needed to induce tetramerization. We also studied the phase diagram of a model which interpolates between the nearest neighbor Heisenberg model and a Hamiltonian for which the singlet-plaquette product state is an exact ground state.

In this work we show that the former state is the true ground state by a systematic study with infinite projected-entangled pair states (iPEPS), for which the accuracy can be systematically controlled by the so-called bond dimension $D$. Both competing states can be reproduced with iPEPS by using different unit cell sizes. For small $D$ the dimer state has a lower variational energy than the plaquette state, however, for large $D$ it is the latter which becomes energetically favorable. The plaquette formation is also confirmed by exact diagonalizations and variational Monte Carlo studies, according to which both the dimerized and plaquette states are non-chiral flux states.

In addition to low-energy spin fluctuations, which distinguish them from band insulators, Mott insulators often possess orbital degrees of freedom when crystal-field levels are partially filled. While in most situations spins and orbitals develop long-range order, the possibility for the ground state to be a quantum liquid opens new perspectives. In this paper, we provide clear evidence that the SU(4) symmetric Kugel-Khomskii model on the honeycomb lattice is a quantum spin-orbital liquid. The absence of any form of symmetry breaking - lattice or SU(N) - is supported by a combination of semiclassical and numerical approaches: flavor-wave theory, tensor network algorithm, and exact diagonalizations. In addition, all properties revealed by these methods are very accurately accounted for by a projected variational wave-function based on the π-flux state of fermions on the honeycomb lattice at 1/4-filling. In that state, correlations are algebraic because of the presence of a Dirac point at the Fermi level, suggesting that the symmetric Kugel-Khomskii model on the honeycomb lattice is an algebraic quantum spin-orbital liquid. This model provides a good starting point to understand the recently discovered spin-orbital liquid behavior of Ba_3CuSb_2O_9. The present results also suggest to choose optical lattices with honeycomb geometry in the search for quantum liquids in ultra-cold four-color fermionic atoms.

We investigate the spin-induced polarization in the multiferroic compound Ba2CuGe2O7 using variarional and finite temperature mean field approaches. The compound is described by a spin-3/2 Heisenberg model extended with easy plane anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Applying magnetic field parallel to the [110] axis, three phases can be distinguished: (i) At high magnetic field we find a partially magnetized phase with spins parallel to the fields and uniform polarization; (ii) Below a critical field the ground state is a twofold degenerate canted antiferromagnet, where the degeneracy can be lifted by a finite DM interaction; (iii) At zero field a U(1) symmetry breaking phase takes place, exhibiting a Goldstone-mode. To reproduce the magnetization and polarization measurements reported in Murakawa et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 137202 (2010)], we introduce an additional term in the Hamiltonian that couples the polarizations on neighboring tetrahedra. This results in the appearance of a canted ferrimagnetic phase for h < 1 T, characterized by a finite staggered polarization, as well as by a finite magnetization along the [-1,1,0] axis that leads to torque anomalies.
