Universal connectivity has been part of past and current generations of wireless systems, but as we approach 6G, the subject of social responsibility is being built as a core component. Given the advent of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), reaching these goals will be much closer to realization than ever before. Owing to the benefits of NTN, the integration NTN and Terrestrial Networks (TN) is still infancy, where the past, the current and the future releases in the 3$^{\text{rd}}$ Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) provide guidelines to adopt a successfully co-existence/integration of TN and NTN. Therefore, in this article, we have illustrated through 3GPP guidelines, on how NTN and TN can effectively be integrated. Moreover, the role of beamforming and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms is highlighted to achieve this integration. Finally the usefulness of integrating NTN and TN is validated through experimental analysis.

The terahertz communications have the potential to revolutionize data transfer with unmatched speed and facilitate the development of new high-bandwidth applications. This paper studies the performance of downlink terahertz system assisted by beyond diagonal intelligent reconfigurable surface (BD-IRS). For enhanced energy efficiency and low cost, a joint precoding and BD-IRS phase shift design satisfying the $1$-bit resolution constraints to maximize the spectral efficiency is presented. The original problem is non-linear, NP-hard, and intricately coupled, and obtaining an optimal solution is challenging. To reduce the complexity, we first transform the optimization problem into two problems and then iteratively solve them to achieve an efficient solution. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach for the BD-IRS assisted terahertz system significantly enhances the spectral efficiency compared to the conventional diagonal IRS assisted system.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a promising technology in both terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) due to its ability to manipulate wireless environments for better connectivity. Significant studies have been focused on conventional RIS with diagonal phase response matrices. This simple RIS architecture, though less expensive, has limited flexibility in engineering the wireless channels. As the latest member of RIS technology, beyond diagonal RIS (BD-RIS) has recently been proposed in terrestrial setups. Due to the interconnected phase response elements, BD-RIS significantly enhances the control over the wireless environment. This work proposes the potential and challenges of BD-RIS in NTNs. We begin with the motivation and recent advances in BD-RIS. Subsequently, we discuss the fundamentals of BD-RIS and NTNs. We then outline the application of BD-RIS in NTNs, followed by a case study on BD-RIS enabled non-orthogonal multiple access low earth orbit satellite communication. Finally, we highlight challenges and research directions with concluding remarks.

In this paper, we consider a scenario with one UAV equipped with a ULA, which sends combined information and sensing signals to communicate with multiple GBS and, at the same time, senses potential targets placed within an interested area on the ground. We aim to jointly design the transmit beamforming with the GBS association to optimize communication performance while ensuring high sensing accuracy. We propose a predictive beamforming framework based on a dual DNN solution to solve the formulated nonconvex optimization problem. A first DNN is trained to produce the required beamforming matrix for any point of the UAV flying area in a reduced time compared to state-of-the-art beamforming optimizers. A second DNN is trained to learn the optimal map** from the input features, power, and EIRP constraints to the GBS association decision. Finally, we provide an extensive simulation analysis to corroborate the proposed approach and show the benefits of EIRP, SINR performance and computational speed.

This paper studies the channel model for the integrated satellite-terrestrial networks operating at C-band under deployment in dense urban and rural areas. Particularly, the interference channel from the low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite to the dense urban area is analyzed carefully under the impact of the environment's characteristics, i.e., the building density, building height, and the elevation angle. Subsequently, the experimental results show the strong relationships between these characteristics and the channel gain loss. Especially, the functions of channel gain loss are obtained by utilizing the model-fitting approach that can be used as the basis for studying future works of integration of satellite and terrestrial networks (ISTNs).

Satellite constellation systems are becoming more attractive to provide communication services worldwide, especially in areas without network connectivity. While optimizing satellite gateway placement is crucial for operators to minimize deployment and operating costs, reducing the number of gateways may require more inter-satellite link hops to reach the ground network, thereby increasing latency. Therefore, it is of significant importance to develop a framework that optimizes gateway placement, dynamic routing, and flow management in inter-satellite links to enhance network performance. To this end, we model an optimization problem as a mixed-integer problem with a cost function combining the number of gateways, flow allocation, and traffic latency, allowing satellite operators to set priorities based on their policies. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed approach effectively reduces the number of active gateways by selecting their most appropriate locations while balancing the trade-off between the number of gateways and traffic latency. Furthermore, we demonstrate the impact of different weights in the cost function on performance through comparative analysis.

Global communications have undergone a paradigm shift with the rapid expansion of low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations, offering a new space era of reduced latency and ubiquitous, high-speed broadband internet access. However, the fast developments in LEO orbits pose significant challenges, particularly the coexistence with geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellite systems. This article presents an overview of the regulatory aspects that cover the spectrum sharing in the bands allocated to the Fixed Satellite Service between geostationary networks (GSO) and non-geostationary systems (NGSO), as well as the main interference mitigation techniques for their coexistence. Our work highlights the increased potential for inter-system interference. It explores the regulatory landscape following the World Radio Conference (WRC-23). We discuss the different interference management strategies proposed for the GSO-NGSO spectral coexistence, including on-board and ground-based approaches and more advanced mitigation techniques based on beamforming. Moving onto operational aspects related to the sharing of spectrum, we introduce recent work on interference detection, identification, and mitigation and provide our vision of the emerging role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the aforementioned tasks.

The third generation partnership project (3GPP) has recently defined two frequency bands for direct access with satellites, which is a concrete step toward realizing the anticipated space-air-ground integrated networks. In addition, given the rapid increase in the numbers of satellites orbiting the Earth and emerging satellites applications, non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) might soon need to operate with integrated access and backhaul (IAB), which has been standardized for terrestrial networks to enable low-cost, flexible and scalable network densification. Therefore, this work investigates the performance of satellite IAB, where the same spectrum resources at a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite are utilized to provide access to a handheld user (UE) and backhaul via inter-satellite links. The UE is assumed to operate with frequency division duplex (FDD) as specified by the 3GPP, while both FDD and time division duplex (TDD) are investigated for backhauling. Our analysis demonstrate that the interference between access and backhaul links can significantly affect the performance under TDD backhauling, especially when the access link comes with a high quality-of-service demands.

The incorporation of subarrays in Direct Radiating Arrays for satellite missions is fundamental in reducing the number of Radio Frequency chains, which correspondingly diminishes cost, power consumption, space, and mass. Despite the advantages, previous beamforming schemes incur significant losses during beam scanning, particularly when hybrid beamforming is not employed. Consequently, this paper introduces an algorithm capable of compensating for these losses by increasing the power, for this, the algorithm will activate radiating elements required to address a specific Effective Isotropic Radiated Power for a beam pattern over Earth, projected from a GeoStationary satellite. In addition to the aforementioned compensation, other beam parameters have been addressed in the algorithm, such as beamwidth and Side Lobe Levels. To achieve these objectives, we propose employing the array thinning concept through the use of genetic algorithms, which enable beam sha** with the desired characteristics and power. The full array design considers an open-ended waveguide, configured to operate in circular polarization within the Ka-band frequency range of 17.7-20.2 GHz.

Satellite communications, essential for modern connectivity, extend access to maritime, aeronautical, and remote areas where terrestrial networks are unfeasible. Current GEO systems distribute power and bandwidth uniformly across beams using multi-beam footprints with fractional frequency reuse. However, recent research reveals the limitations of this approach in heterogeneous traffic scenarios, leading to inefficiencies. To address this, this paper presents a machine learning (ML)-based approach to Radio Resource Management (RRM).
We treat the RRM task as a regression ML problem, integrating RRM objectives and constraints into the loss function that the ML algorithm aims at minimizing. Moreover, we introduce a context-aware ML metric that evaluates the ML model's performance but also considers the impact of its resource allocation decisions on the overall performance of the communication system.

In today's ever-connected world, the demand for fast and widespread connectivity is insatiable, making multibeam satellite systems an indispensable pillar of modern telecommunications infrastructure. However, the evolving communication landscape necessitates a high degree of adaptability. This adaptability is particularly crucial for beamforming, as it enables the adjustment of peak throughput and beamwidth to meet fluctuating traffic demands by varying the beamwidth, side lobe level (SLL), and effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP). This paper introduces an innovative approach rooted in supervised learning to efficiently derive the requisite beamforming matrix, aligning it with system requirements. Significantly reducing computation time, this method is uniquely tailored for real-time adaptation, enhancing the agility and responsiveness of satellite multibeam systems. However, a more complex ground segment with multiple ground stations is necessary due to these satellites' high speeds and low altitudes. The complete dimensioning of the ground segment, including gateway optimal placement and the number of ground access points, remains a relevant open challenge. Subsequently, we propose a ground segment dimensioning approach that combines several criteria, such as rain attenuation, elevation angle, visibility, geographical constraints, and user traffic demands. As pure optimization-based solutions have shown to be computationally tedious and to lack flexibility, machine learning (ML)-based methods have emerged as promising alternatives. We investigate the application of energy-efficient brain-inspired ML models for on-board radio resource management. Apart from software simulation, we report extensive experimental results leveraging the recently released Intel Loihi 2 chip. To benchmark the performance of the proposed model, we implement conventional convolutional neural networks (CNN) on a Xilinx Versal VCK5000, and provide a detailed comparison of accuracy, precision, recall, and energy efficiency for different traffic demands. Most notably, for relevant workloads, spiking neural networks (SNNs) implemented on Loihi 2 yield higher accuracy, while reducing power consumption by more than 100$\times$ as compared to the CNN-based reference platform. Our findings point to the significant potential of neuromorphic computing and SNNs in supporting on-board SatCom operations, paving the way for enhanced efficiency and sustainability in future SatCom systems.

Device-to-device (D2D) communications offers high spectral efficiency, low energy consumption and transmission latency. However, one of the main limitations of D2D communications is co-channel interference from underlaying wireless system. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) is a promising technology because it can manipulate the electromagnetic waves in their environment to overcome interference and enhance wireless communications. This paper considers RIS enhanced D2D communications underlaying unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The objective is to maximize the sum rate of NOMA D2D communications by simultaneously optimizing the power budget of D2D transmitter, NOMA power allocation coefficients of D2D receivers and passive beamforming of RIS while guaranteeing the quality of services of UAV user. Due to non-convexity, the optimization problem is intractable and challenging to handle. Therefore, it is solved in two parts using alternating optimization. Simulation results unviel the performance of the proposed RIS enhanced D2D communications scheme. This paper proposes an energy-efficient RIS-assisted downlink NOMA communication for LEO satellite networks. The proposed framework simultaneously optimizes the transmit power of ground terminals of the LEO satellite and the passive beamforming of RIS while ensuring the quality of services. In step 1, for any given phase shift vector, we calculate satellite transmit power towards each ground terminal using the Lagrangian dual method. Then, in step 2, given the transmit power, we design passive beamforming for RIS by solving the semi-definite programming. We also compare our solution with a benchmark framework having a fixed phase shift design and a conventional NOMA framework without involving RIS. Numerical results show that the proposed optimization framework achieves 21.47\% and 54.9\% higher energy efficiency compared to the benchmark and conventional frameworks.

In this paper, we study a RAN resource-slicing problem for energy-efficient communication in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based millimeter-wave (mmWave) downlink (DL) network consisting of enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) services. Specifically, assuming a fixed set of predefined beams, we address an energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem to obtain the optimal beam selection, Resource Block (RB), and transmit power allocation policy to serve URLLC and eMBB users on the same physical radio resources. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer non-linear fractional programming (MINLFP) problem considering minimum data rate and latency in packet delivery constraints. By leveraging the properties of fractional programming theory, we first transform the formulated non-convex optimization problem in fractional form into a tractable subtractive form. Subsequently, we solve the transformed problem using a two-loop iterative algorithm. The main resource-slicing problem is solved in the inner loop utilizing the difference of convex (DC) programming and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques. Subsequently, the outer loop is solved using the Dinkelbach method to acquire an improved solution in every iteration until it converges. Our simulation results illustrate the performance gains of the proposed methodology with respect to baseline algorithms with the fixed and mixed resource grid models.

This paper explores the transformative potential of digital twin (DT) technology in the context of non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). NTNs, encompassing both airborne and space-borne elements, present unique challenges in network control, management, and optimization. DT is a novel approach to design and manage complicated cyber-physical systems with a high degree of automation, intelligence, and resilience. The adoption of DTs within NTNs offers a dynamic and detailed virtual representation of the entire ecosystem, enabling real-time monitoring, simulations, and data-driven decision-making. This paper delves into the envisioned integration of DTs in NTNs, discussing the technical challenges and highlighting key enabling technologies. Emphasis is placed on technologies such as Internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), space-based cloud computing, quantum computing, and others, providing a comprehensive overview of their potentials in empowering DT development for NTNs. The amount of data generated by Earth observation satellites can be enormous, which poses a great challenge to the satellite-to-ground connections with limited rate. This paper considers problem of efficient downlink communication of multi-spectral satellite images for Earth observation using change detection. The proposed method for image processing consists of the joint design of cloud removal and change encoding, which can be seen as an instance of semantic communication, as it encodes important information, such as changed multi-spectral pixels (MPs), while aiming to minimize energy consumption. It comprises a three-stage end-to-end scoring mechanism that determines the importance of each MP before deciding its transmission. Specifically, the sensing image is (1) standardized, (2) passed through a high-performance cloud filtering via the Cloud-Net model, and (3) passed to the proposed scoring algorithm that uses Change-Net to identify MPs that have a high likelihood of being changed, compress them and forward the result to the ground station. The experimental results indicate that the proposed framework is effective in optimizing energy usage while preserving high-quality data transmission in satellite-based Earth observation applications.

The proposed scheme jointly optimizes the precoding vectors at the gateway antennas and amplifying-and-matching mechanism at the satellite to maximize the system-weighted energy efficiency under the transmit power budget constraint. The technical designs are formulated into a non-convex sparsity problem consisting of a fractional-form objective function and sparsity-related constraints. To address these challenges, two iterative efficient designs are proposed by utilizing the concepts of Dinkelbach's method and the compressed-sensing approach. To allow flexible and cost-efficient network densification and deployment, the integrated access and backhaul (IAB) was recently standardized by the third generation partnership project (3GPP) as part of the fifth-generation new radio (5G-NR) networks. However, the current standardization only defines the IAB for the terrestrial domain, while non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) are yet to be considered for such standardization efforts. In this work, we motivate the use of IAB in NTNs, and we discuss the compatibility issues between the 3GPP specifications on IAB in 5G-NR and the satellite radio regulations. In addition, we identify the required adaptation from the 3GPP and/or satellite operators for realizing an NTN-enabled IAB operation. A case study is provided for a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite-enabled in-band IAB operation with orthogonal and non-orthogonal bandwidth allocation between access and backhauling, and under both time- and frequency-division duplex (TDD/FDD) transmission modes. Numerical results demonstrate the feasibility of IAB through satellites, and illustrate the superiority of FDD over TDD transmission. It is also shown that in the absence of precoding, non-orthogonal bandwidth allocation between the access and the backhaul can largely degrades the network throughput.

The mobility of LEO satellites raises the challenge of determining the optimal association between LEO satellites, BSs, and users (UEs). The goal is to satisfy the UE demand while ensuring load balance and optimizing the capacity of the serving link between the BS and the LEO satellite. To tackle this complex optimization problem, which involves mixed-integer non-convex programming, we propose an iterative algorithm that leverages approximation and relaxation methods. The proposed solution aims to find the optimal two-tier satellite-BS-UE association, sub-channel assignment, power and bandwidth allocation in the shortest possible time, fulfilling the requirements of the integrated satellite-terrestrial network.

This paper aims to develop satellite-user association and resource allocation mechanisms to minimize the total transmit power for integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks wherein a constellation of LEO satellites provides the radio access services to both terrestrial base stations (BSs) and the satellite-enabled users (SUEs). In this work, beside maintaining the traditional SatCom connection for SUEs, the LEO satellites provide backhaul links to the BSs to upload the data received from their ground customers. Taking the individual SUE traffic demands and the aggregated BS demands, we formulate a mixed integer programming which consists of the binary variables due to satellite association selection, power control and bandwidth allocation related variables. To cope with this challenging problem, an iterative optimization-based algorithm is proposed by relaxing the binary components and alternating updating all variables. A greedy mechanism is also presented for comparison purpose. Then, numerical results are presented to confirm the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms.

A whole suite of innovative technologies and architectures have emerged in response to the rapid growth of wireless traffic. This paper studies an integrated network design that boosts system capacity through cooperation between wireless access points (APs) and a satellite for enhancing the network's spectral efficiency. We first mathematically derive an achievable throughput expression for the uplink (UL) data transmission over spatially correlated Rician channels. Our generic achievable throughput expression is applicable for arbitrary received signal detection techniques under realistic imperfect channel estimates. A closed-form expression is then obtained for the ergodic UL data throughput when maximum ratio combining is utilized for detecting the desired signals. As for our resource allocation contributions, we formulate the max-min fairness and total transmit power optimization problems relying on the channel statistics for performing power allocation. The solution of each optimization problem is derived in form of a low-complexity iterative design, in which each data power variable is updated relying on a closed-form expression. Our integrated hybrid network concept allows users to be served that may not otherwise be accommodated due to the excessive data demands. The algorithms proposed to allow us to address the congestion issues appearing when at least one user is served at a rate below the target. The mathematical analysis is also illustrated with the aid of our numerical results that show the added benefits of considering the space links in terms of improving the ergodic data throughput. Furthermore, the proposed algorithms smoothly circumvent any potential congestion, especially in face of high rate requirements and weak channel conditions.

Beam Placement (BP) is a well-known problem in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communication (SatCom) systems, which can be modelled as an NP-hard clique cover problem. Recently, quantum computing has emerged as a novel technology which revolutionizes how to solve challenging optimization problems by formulating Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO), then preparing Hamiltonians as inputs for quantum computers. In this paper, we study how to use quantum computing to solve BP problems. However, due to limited hardware resources, existing quantum computers are unable to tackle large optimization spaces. Therefore, we propose an efficient Hamiltonian Reduction method that allows quantum processors to solve large BP instances encountered in LEO systems. We conduct our simulations on real quantum computers (D-Wave Advantage) using a real dataset of vessel locations in the US. Numerical results show that our algorithm outperforms commercialized solutions of D-Wave by allowing existing quantum annealers to solve 17.5 times larger BP instances while maintaining high solution quality. Although quantum computing cannot theoretically overcome the hardness of BP problems, this work contributes early efforts to applying quantum computing in satellite optimization problems, especially applications formulated as clique cover/graph coloring problems.

Satellite communications industry is currently going through a rapid and profound transformation to adapt to the recent innovations and developments in the realm of non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellites. The growing popularity of NGSO systems, with cheap manufacturing and launching costs, has set to revolutionize the internet market. In this context, accurate channel characterization is crucial for the performance optimization and designing efficient NGSO communications, especially considering the dynamic propagation environment. While the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has provided some guidelines in Release 15, we observed certain divergence on the channel models considered in the literature, each with different assumptions and peculiarities. This paper provides an extensive review of the existing methods proposed for NGSO channel modeling that consider different orbits, frequency bands, user equipment, use-case and scenario peculiarities. The provided review discusses the channel modeling efforts from a contemporary perspective through trade-off analyses, classifications, and highlighting their advantages and pitfalls. For multi-beam high throughput (MB-HTS) geostationary (GEO) satellite networks, the congestion appears when user's demands cannot be fully satisfied. This paper boosts the system performance by formulating and solving the power allocation strategies under the congestion control to admit users. A new multi-objective optimization is formulated to balance the sum data throughput and the satisfied user set. After that, we come up with two different solutions, which efficiently tackle the multi-objective maximization problem: The model-based solution utilizes the weighted sum method to enhance the number of demand-satisfied users, whilst the supervised learning solution offers a low-computational complexity design by inheriting optimization structures as continuous map**s. Simulation results verify that our solutions effectively copes with the congestion and outperforms the data throughput demand than the other previous works.

This paper aims to jointly determine linear precoding (LP) vectors, beam hop** (BH), and discrete DVB-S2X transmission rates for the GEO satellite communication systems to minimize the payload power consumption and satisfy ground users' demands within a time window. Regarding constraint on the maximum number of illuminated beams per time slot, the technical requirement is formulated as a sparse optimization problem in which the hardware-related beam illumination energy is modeled in a sparsity form of the LP vectors. To cope with this problem, the compressed sensing method is employed to transform the sparsity parts into the quadratic form of precoders. Then, an iterative window-based algorithm is developed to update the LP vectors sequentially to an efficient solution. Additionally, two other two-phase frameworks are also proposed for comparison purposes. In the first phase, these methods aim to determine the MODCOD transmission schemes for users to meet their demands by using a heuristic approach or DNN tool. In the second phase, the LP vectors of each time slot will be optimized separately based on the determined MODCOD schemes.

This paper proposes a cognitive radio enabled LEO SatCom using RSMA radio access technique with the coexistence of GEO SatCom network. In particular, this work aims to maximize the sum rate of LEO SatCom by simultaneously optimizing the power budget over different beams, RSMA power allocation for users over each beam, and subcarrier user assignment while restricting the interference temperature to GEO SatCom. The problem of sum rate maximization is formulated as non-convex, where the global optimal solution is challenging to obtain. Thus, an efficient solution can be obtained in three steps: first we employ a successive convex approximation technique to reduce the complexity and make the problem more tractable. Second, for any given resource block user assignment, we adopt KKT conditions to calculate the transmit power over different beams and RSMA power allocation of users over each beam. Third, using the allocated power, we design an efficient algorithm based on the greedy approach for resource block user assignment. Numerical results demonstrate the benefits of the proposed optimization scheme compared to the benchmark schemes.

To address this issue, we propose RSMA for CR enabled GEO-LEO coexisting satellite network. In particular, this work aims to maximize the system's sum rate by simultaneously optimizing the power allocation and subcarrier beam assignment of LEO satellite communication while restricting the interference temperature to GEO satellite users. The problem of sum rate maximization is formulated as non-convex and a Global optimal solution is challenging to obtain. Therefore, we first employ the successive convex approximation technique to reduce the complexity and make the problem more tractable. Then for the power allocation, we exploit KKT condition and adopt an efficient algorithm based on the greedy approach for subcarrier beam assignment. We also propose two suboptimal schemes with fixed power allocation and random subcarrier beam assignment as the benchmark. Results demonstrate the benefits of the proposed scheme compared to the benchmark schemes.

Non-geostationary (Non-GSO) satellite constellations have emerged as a promising solution to enable ubiquitous high-speed low-latency broadband services by generating multiple spot-beams placed on the ground according to the user locations. However, there is an inherent trade-off between the number of active beams and the complexity of generating a large number of beams. This paper formulates and solves a joint beam placement and load balancing problem to carefully optimize the satellite beam and enhance the link budgets with a minimal number of active beams. We propose a two-stage algorithm design to overcome the combinatorial structure of the considered optimization problem providing a solution in polynomial time. The first stage minimizes the number of active beams, while the second stage performs a load balancing to distribute users in the coverage area of the active beams. Numerical results confirm the benefits of the proposed methodology both in carrier-to-noise ratio and multiplexed users per beam over other benchmarks.

Beam hop** (BH) and carrier aggregation (CA) are two promising technologies for the next generation satellite communication systems to achieve several orders of magnitude increase in system capacity and to significantly improve the spectral efficiency. While BH allows a great flexibility in adapting the offered capacity to the heterogeneous demand, CA further enhances the user quality-of-service (QoS) by allowing it to pool resources from multiple adjacent beams. In this paper, we consider a multi-beam high throughput satellite (HTS) system that employs BH in conjunction with CA to capitalize on the mutual interplay between both techniques. Particularly, an innovative joint BH-CA scheme is proposed and analyzed in this work to utilize their individual competencies. This includes designing an efficient joint time-space beam illumination pattern for BH and multi-user aggregation strategy for CA. Through this, user-carrier assignment, transponder filling-rates, beams hop** pattern, and illumination duration are all simultaneously optimized by formulating a joint optimization problem as a multi-objective mixed integer linear programming problem (MINLP). Simulation results are provided to corroborate our analysis, demonstrate the design tradeoffs, and point out the potentials of the proposed joint BH-CA concept. Advantages of our BH-CA scheme versus the conventional BH method without employing CA are investigated and presented under the same system circumstances.

Reflecting intelligent surfaces (RIS) has gained significant attention due to its high energy and spectral efficiency in next-generation wireless networks. By using low-cost passive reflecting elements, RIS can smartly reconfigure the signal propagation to extend the wireless communication coverage. This letter proposes a new optimization scheme in a multi-cell RIS-NOMA network to enhance the spectral efficiency under signal decoding errors. In particular, the power budget of the base station and the transmit power of NOMA users while the reflection matrix of RIS is simultaneously optimized in each cell. Due to objective function and quality of service constraints, the joint problem is formulated as non-convex, which is very complex and challenging to obtain the optimal global solution. To make the problem tractable, we first decouple it into two sub-problems and transform it by inner approximation and successive convex approximation techniques. Then we adopt a standard optimization method for power allocation and DC programming for the reflection matrix. Numerical results demonstrate the benefits of the proposed optimization scheme in the multi-cell RIS-NOMA network.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are an important component of next-generation wireless networks that can assist in high data rate communications and provide enhanced coverage.Their high mobility and aerial nature offer deployment flexibility and low-cost infrastructure support to existing cellular networks and provide many applications that rely on mobile wireless communications. However, security is a major challenge in UAV communications, and Physical Layer Security (PLS) is an important technique to improve the reliability and security of data shared with the assistance of UAVs. Recently, Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) have emerged as a novel technology to extend and/or enhance wireless coverage by re-configuring the propagation environment of communications. This paper provides an overview of how IRS can improve the PLS of UAV networks. We discuss different use cases of PLS for IRS enhanced UAV communications and briefly review the recent advances in this area. Then based on the recent advances, we also present a case study that utilizes alternate optimization to maximize the secrecy capacity for IRS enhanced UAV scenario in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. Finally, we highlight several open issues and research challenges to realize PLS in IRS enhanced UAV communications.

Automotive-Industry 5.0 will use beyond fifth-generation (B5G) technologies to provide robust, computationally intelligent, and energy-efficient data sharing among various onboard sensors, vehicles, and other devices. Recently, ambient backscatter communications (AmBC) have gained significant interest in the research community for providing battery-free communications. AmBC can modulate useful data and reflect it towards near devices using the energy and frequency of existing RF signals. However, obtaining channel state information (CSI) for AmBC systems would be very challenging due to no pilot sequences and limited power. As one of the latest members of multiple access technology, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has emerged as a promising solution for connecting large-scale devices over the same spectral resources in B5G wireless networks. Under imperfect CSI, this paper provides a new optimization framework for energy-efficient transmission in AmBC enhanced NOMA cooperative vehicle-to-everything (V2X) networks. We simultaneously minimize the total transmit power of the V2X network by optimizing the power allocation at BS and reflection coefficient at backscatter sensors while guaranteeing the individual quality of services. The problem of total power minimization is formulated as non-convex optimization and coupled on multiple variables, making it complex and challenging. Therefore, we first decouple the original problem into two sub-problems and convert the nonlinear rate constraints into linear constraints. Then, we adopt the iterative sub-gradient method to obtain an efficient solution. For comparison, we also present a conventional NOMA cooperative V2X network without AmBC. Simulation results show the benefits of our proposed AmBC enhanced NOMA cooperative V2X network in terms of total achievable energy efficiency.

Backscatter communications (BC) has emerged as a promising technology for providing low-powered transmissions in nextG (i.e., beyond 5G) wireless networks. The fundamental idea of BC is the possibility of communications among wireless devices by using the existing ambient radio frequency signals. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has recently attracted significant attention due to its high spectral efficiency and massive connectivity. This paper proposes a new optimization framework to minimize total transmit power of BC-NOMA cooperative vehicle-to-everything networks (V2XneT) while ensuring the quality of services. More specifically, the base station (BS) transmits a superimposed signal to its associated roadside units (RSUs) in the first time slot. Then the RSUs transmit the superimposed signal to their serving vehicles in the second time slot exploiting decode and forward protocol. A backscatter device (BD) in the coverage area of RSU also receives the superimposed signal and reflect it towards vehicles by modulating own information. Thus, the objective is to simultaneously optimize the transmit power of BS and RSUs along with reflection coefficient of BDs under perfect and imperfect channel state information. The problem of energy efficiency is formulated as non-convex and coupled on multiple optimization variables which makes it very complex and hard to solve. Therefore, we first transform and decouple the original problem into two sub-problems and then employ iterative sub-gradient method to obtain an efficient solution. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed BC-NOMA V2XneT provides high energy efficiency than the conventional NOMA V2XneT without BC.

Reflecting intelligent surfaces (RIS) is a low-cost and energy-efficient solution to achieve high spectral efficiency in sixth-generation (6G) networks. The basic idea of RIS is to smartly reconfigure the signal propagation by using passive reflecting elements. On the other side, the demand of high throughput geostationary (GEO) satellite communications (SatCom) is rapidly growing to deliver broadband services in inaccessible/insufficient covered areas of terrestrial networks. This paper proposes a GEO SatCom network, where a satellite transmits the signal to a ground mobile terminal using multicarrier communications. To enhance the effective gain, the signal delivery from satellite to the ground mobile terminal is also assisted by RIS which smartly shift the phase of the signal towards ground terminal. We consider that RIS is mounted on a high building and equipped with multiple re-configurable passive elements along with smart controller. We jointly optimize the power allocation and phase shift design to maximize the channel capacity of the system. The joint optimization problem is formulated as nonconvex due to coupled variables which is hard to solve through traditional convex optimization methods. Thus, we propose a new $ε-$optimal algorithm which is based on Mesh Adaptive Direct Search to obtain an efficient solution. Simulation results unveil the benefits of RIS-assisted SatCom in terms of system channel capacity.

Full duplex (FD) is an auspicious wireless technology that holds the potential to double data rates through simultaneous transmission and reception. This paper proposes two innovative designs of hybrid beamforming (HYBF) for a multicell massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) millimeter wave (mmWave) FD system. Initially, we introduce a novel centralized HYBF (C-HYBF) scheme, which employs the minorization-maximization (MM) method. However, while centralized beamforming designs offer superior performance, they suffer from high computational complexity, substantial communication overhead, and demand expensive computational resources. To surmount these challenges, we present a framework that facilitates per-link parallel and distributed HYBF (P&D- HYBF) in the mmWave frequency band. This cooperative approach enables each base station (BS) to independently solve its local, low-complexity sub-problems in parallel, resulting in a substantial reduction in communication overhead and computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that P&D-HYBF achieves comparable performance to C-HYBF, and with only a few radio-frequency (RF) chains, both designs surpass the capabilities of fully digital half duplex (HD) systems.

Next-generation satellite systems require more flexibility in resource management such that available radio resources can be dynamically allocated to meet time-varying and non-uniform traffic demands. Considering potential benefits of beam hop** (BH) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), we exploit the time-domain flexibility in multi-beam satellite systems by optimizing BH design, and enhance the power-domain flexibility via NOMA. In this paper, we investigate the synergy and mutual influence of beam hop** and NOMA. We jointly optimize power allocation, beam scheduling, and terminal-timeslot assignment to minimize the gap between requested traffic demand and offered capacity. In the solution development, we formally prove the NP-hardness of the optimization problem. Next, we develop a bounding scheme to tightly gauge the global optimum and propose a suboptimal algorithm to enable efficient resource assignment. Numerical results demonstrate the benefits of combining NOMA and BH, and validate the superiority of the proposed BH-NOMA schemes over benchmarks.
