SIC-POVMs and orders of real quadratic fields
Abstract: We consider the problem of counting and classifying symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (SICs or SIC-POVMs), that is, sets of $d^2$ equiangular lines in $\mathbb{C}^d$. For $4 \leq d \leq 90$, we show the number of known equivalence classes of Weyl--Heisenberg covariant SICs in dimension $d$ equals the cardinality of the ideal class monoid of (not necessarily inver… ▽ More

The family of $a$-floor quotient partial orders
Abstract: An approximate divisor order is a partial order on the positive integers $\mathbb{N}^+$ that refines the divisor order and is refined by the additive total order. A previous paper studied such a partial order on $\mathbb{N}^+$, produced using the floor function. A positive integer $d$ is a floor quotient of $n$, denoted $d \,\preccurlyeq_{1}\, n$, if there is a positive integer $k$ such that… ▽ More

The factorial function and generalizations, extended
Abstract: This paper presents an extension of Bhargava's theory of factorials associated to any nonempty subset $S$ of $\mathbb{Z}$. Bhargava's factorials $k!_S$ are invariants, constructed using the notion of $p$-orderings of $S$ where $p$ is a prime. This paper defines $b$-orderings of any nonempty subset $S$ of $\mathbb{Z}$ for all integers $b\ge2$, as well as "extreme" cases $b=1$ and $b=0$. It defines… ▽ More

Asymptotics of Reciprocal Supernorm Partition Statistics
Abstract: We consider two multiplicative statistics on the set of integer partitions: the norm of a partition, which is the product of its parts, and the supernorm of a partition, which is the product of the prime numbers $p_i$ indexed by its parts $i$. We introduce and study new statistics that are sums of reciprocals of supernorms on three statistical ensembles of partitions, labelled by their size… ▽ More

The floor quotient partial order
Abstract: A positive integer $d$ is a floor quotient of $n$ if there is a positive integer $k$ such that $d = \lfloor n/k \rfloor$. The floor quotient relation defines a partial order on the positive integers. This paper studies the internal structure of this partial order and its Möbius function.

Abstract: This paper is an overview and survey of work on the 3x+1 problem, also called the Collatz problem, and generalizations of it. It gives a history of the problem. It addresses two questions: (1) What can mathematics currently say about this problem? (as of 2010). (2) How can this problem be hard, when it is so easy to state?

Path sets in one-sided symbolic dynamics
Abstract: Path sets are spaces of one-sided infinite symbol sequences associated to pointed graphs (G_v_0), which are edge-labeled directed graphs G with a distinguished vertex v_0. Such sets arise naturally as address labels in geometric fractal constructions and in other contexts. The resulting set of symbol sequences need not be closed under the one-sided shift. this paper establishes basic properties of… ▽ More

On sets of integers which are both sum-free and product-free
Abstract: We consider sets of positive integers containing no sum of two elements in the set and also no product of two elements. We show that the upper density of such a set is strictly smaller than 1/2 and that this is best possible. Further, we also find the maximal order for the density of such sets that are also periodic modulo some positive integer.

The Takagi Function and Its Properties
Abstract: The Takagi function is a continuous non-differentiable function on [0,1] introduced by Teiji Takagi in 1903. It has since appeared in a surprising number of different mathematical contexts, including mathematical analysis, probability theory and number theory. This paper surveys the known properties of this function as it relates to these fields.

The maximal density of product-free sets in Z/nZ
Abstract: This paper studies the maximal size of product-free sets in Z/nZ. These are sets of residues for which there is no solution to ab == c (mod n) with a,b,c in the set. In a previous paper we constructed an infinite sequence of integers (n_i)_{i > 0} and product-free sets S_i in Z/n_iZ such that the density |S_i|/n_i tends to 1 as i tends to infinity, where |S_i|$ denotes the cardinality of S_i. Here… ▽ More

Product-free sets with high density
Abstract: We show that there are sets of integers with asymptotic density arbitrarily close to 1 in which there is no solution to the equation ab=c, with a,b,c in the set. We also consider some natural generalizations, as well as a specific numerical example of a product-free set of integers with asymptotic density greater than 1/2.

The Integral of the Riemann xi-function
Abstract: This paper studies the integral of the Riemann xi-function. More generally, it studies a one-parameter family of functions given by Fourier integrals and satisfying a functional equation. Members of this family are shown to have only finitely many zeros on the critical line, with the integral of the Riemann xi-function having exactly one zero on the critical line, at s = 1/2. The zeros of the inte… ▽ More

Convergence of the restricted Nelder-Mead algorithm in two dimensions
Abstract: The Nelder-Mead algorithm, a longstanding direct search method for unconstrained optimization published in 1965, is designed to minimize a scalar-valued function f of n real variables using only function values, without any derivative information. Each Nelder-Mead iteration is associated with a nondegenerate simplex defined by n+1 vertices and their function values; a typical iteration produces a… ▽ More

Counting Smooth Solutions to the Equation A+B=C
Abstract: This paper studies integer solutions to the Diophantine equation A+B=C in which none of A, B, C have a large prime factor. We set H(A, B,C) = max(|A|, |B|, |C|), and consider primitive solutions (gcd}(A, B, C)=1) having no prime factor p larger than (log H(A, B,C))^K, for a given finite K. On the assumption that the Generalized Riemann hypothesis (GRH) holds, we show that for any K > 8 there are i… ▽ More

Level Sets of the Takagi Function: Generic Level Sets
Abstract: The Takagi function τ : [0, 1] \rightarrow [0, 1] is a continuous non-differentiable function constructed by Takagi in 1903. This paper studies the level sets L(y) = {x : τ(x) = y} of the Takagi function τ(x). It shows that for a full Lebesgue measure set of ordinates y, these level sets are finite sets, but whose expected number of points is infinite. Complementing this, it shows that the set of… ▽ More

Level Sets of the Takagi Function: Local Level Sets
Abstract: The Takagi function τ: [0, 1] \to [0, 1] is a continuous non-differentiable function constructed by Takagi in 1903. The level sets L(y) = {x : τ(x) = y} of the Takagi function τ(x) are studied by introducing a notion of local level set into which level sets are partitioned. Local level sets are simple to analyze, reducing questions to understanding the relation of level sets to local level sets, w… ▽ More

The Lerch Zeta Function II. Analytic Continuation
Abstract: This is the second of four papers that study algebraic and analytic structures associated with the Lerch zeta function. In this paper we analytically continue it as a function of three complex variables. We that it is well defined as a multivalued function on the manifold M equal to C^3 with the hyperplanes corresponding to integer values of the two variables a and c removed. The Lerch Zeta Function I. Zeta Integrals
Abstract: This is the first of four papers that study algebraic and analytic structures associated to the Lerch zeta function. This paper studies "zeta integrals" associated to the Lerch zeta function using test functions, and obtains functional equations for them. Abstract: This paper studies integer solutions to the ABC equation A+B+C=0 in which none of A, B, C has a large prime factor. Stochastic Models for the 3x+1 and 5x+1 Problems
Abstract: This paper discusses stochastic models for predicting the long-time behavior of the trajectories of orbits of the 3x+1 problem and, for comparison, the 5x+1 problem. The stochastic models are rigorously analyzable, and yield heuristic predictions (conjectures) for the behavior of 3x+1 orbits and 5x+1 orbits.
