We report on experiments with Möbius strip microlasers which were fabricated with high optical quality by direct laser writing. A Möbius strip, i.e., a band with a half twist, exhibits the fascinating property that it has a single nonorientable surface and a single boundary. We provide evidence that, in contrast to conventional ring or disk resonators, a Möbius strip cavity cannot sustain whispering gallery modes (WGM). Comparison between experiments and 3D finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations reveals that the resonances are localized on periodic geodesics.

Microlasers are of ample interest for advancing quantum chaos studies at the intersection of wave dynamics and geometric optics in resonators. However, the mode structures of three-dimensional microlasers without rotational symmetry remain largely unexplored due to fabrication limitations. Previous studies of such cavities revealed lasing modes localized on periodic orbits exclusively confined to a single plane. In this work, we report on the characterization of pyramidal, polymer-based microlasers and demonstrate that the lasing modes are localized on a genuine three-dimensional periodic orbit. The consequences on the laser features are further discussed, in particular stability and polarization issues.

A major objective in photonics is to tailor the emission properties of microcavities which is usually achieved with specific cavity shapes. Yet, the dynamical change of the emission properties during operation would often be advantageous. The implementation of such a method is still a challenging issue. We present an effective procedure for the dynamical control of the emission lobes which relies on the selection of a specific coherent superposition of degenerate modes belonging to different symmetry classes. It is generally applicable to systems exhibiting pairs of degenerate modes. We explored it experimentally and analytically with organic square microlasers, which emit narrow lobes parallel to their sidewalls. By means of the pump polarization, emission lobes are switched on and off selectively with an extinction ratio better 1/50.

The emission from open cavities with non-integrable features remains a challenging problem of practical as well as fundamental relevance. Square-shaped dielectric microcavities provide a favorable case study with generic implications for other polygonal resonators. We report on a joint experimental and theoretical study of square-shaped organic microlasers exhibiting a far-field emission that is strongly concentrated in the directions parallel to the side walls of the cavity. A semiclassical model for the far-field distributions is developed that is in agreement with even fine features of the experimental findings. Comparison of the model calculations with the experimental data allows the precise identification of the lasing modes and their emission mechanisms, providing strong support for a physically intuitive ray-dynamical interpretation. Special attention is paid to the role of diffraction and the finite side length.

We investigated experimentally the ray-wave correspondence in organic microlasers of various triangular shapes. Triangular billiards are of interest since they are the simplest cases of polygonal billiards and the existence and properties of periodic orbits in triangles are not yet fully understood. The microlasers with symmetric shapes that were investigated exhibited states localized on simple periodic orbits, and their lasing characteristics like spectra and far-field distributions could be well explained by the properties of the periodic orbits. Furthermore, asymmetric triangles that do not feature simple periodic orbits were studied. Their lasing properties were found to be more complicated and could not be explained by periodic orbits.

Cuboid-shaped organic microcavities containing a pyrromethene laser dye and supported upon a photonic crystal have been investigated as an approach to reducing the lasing threshold of the cavities. Multiphoton lithography facilitated fabrication of the cuboid cavities directly on the substrate or on the decoupling structure, while similar structures were fabricated on the substrate by UV lithography for comparison. Significant reduction of the lasing threshold by a factor of ~30 has been observed for cavities supported by the photonic crystal relative to those fabricated on the substrate. The lasing mode spectra of the cuboid microresonators provide strong evidence showing that the lasing modes are localized in the horizontal plane, with the shape of an inscribed diamond.

Polymer-based microcavities of ribbon shape (i.e., Fabry-Perot type) were investigated. Out of plane emission from the cavities was observed, with significant differences for the two cases of resonators either fully supported by the substrate or sustained by a pedestal. In both cases, the emission diagrams are accounted for by a model combining diffraction at the cavity edges and reflections from the substrate.

The polarization states of lasers are crucial issues both for practical applications and fundamental research. In general, they depend in a combined manner on the properties of the gain material and on the structure of the electromagnetic modes. In this paper, we address this issue in the case of solid-state organic lasers, a technology which enables to vary independently gain and mode properties. Different kinds of resonators are investigated: in-plane micro-resonators with Fabry-Perot, square, pentagon, stadium, disk, and kite shapes, and external vertical resonators. The degree of polarization P is measured in each case. It is shown that although TE modes prevail generally (P>0), kite-shaped micro-laser generates negative values for P, i.e. a flip of the dominant polarization which becomes mostly TM polarized. We at last investigated two degrees of freedom that are available to tailor the polarization of organic lasers, in addition to the pump polarization and the resonator geometry: upon using resonant energy transfer (RET) or upon pum** the laser dye to an higher excited state. We then demonstrate that significantly lower P factors can be obtained.
