In this paper we study concentrated solutions of the three-dimensional Euler equations in helical symmetry without swirl. We prove that any helical vorticity solution initially concentrated around helices of pairwise distinct radii remains concentrated close to filaments. As suggested by the vortex filament conjecture, we prove that those filaments are translating and rotating helices. Similarly to what is obtained in other frameworks, the localization is weak in the direction of the movement but strong in its normal direction, and holds on an arbitrary long time interval in the naturally rescaled time scale. In order to prove this result, we derive a new explicit formula for the singular part of the Biot-Savart kernel in a two-dimensional reformulation of the problem. This allows us to obtain an appropriate decomposition of the velocity field to reproduce recent methods used to describe the dynamics of vortex rings or point-vortices for the lake equation.

This paper is devoted to the study of its spectrum in the context of the water wave system linearized near equilibrium in a domain with a variable bottom, assumed to be a $C^2$ periodic function. We use the analyticity of the Dirichlet-Neumann operator with respect to the bottom variation and combine it with general properties of elliptic systems and spectral theory for self-adjoint operators to develop a Bloch-Floquet theory and describe the structure of its spectrum. We find that under some conditions on the bottom variations, the spectrum is composed of bands separated by gaps, with explicit formulas for their sizes and locations.

We supplement the equations with the Navier friction boundary conditions $u \cdot n = 0$ and $[(2Su)n + αu]_{\rm tang} = 0$, where $n$ is the unit exterior normal to $\partial Ω$, $Su = (Du + (Du)^t)/2$, $α\in C^0(\partialΩ)$ is the boundary friction coefficient and $[\cdot]_{\rm tang}$ is the projection of its argument onto the tangent space of $\partial Ω$. We prove global existence of a weak Leray-type solution to the resulting initial-boundary value problem and exponential decay in energy norm of these solutions when friction is positive. We also prove exponential decay if friction is non-negative and the domain is not a solid of revolution. In addition, in the frictionless case $α= 0$, we prove convergence of the solution to a steady rigid rotation, if the domain is a solid of revolution. We use the Galerkin method for existence, Poincaré-type inequalities, with suitable adaptations to account for the differential geometry of the boundary, and a global-in-time, integral Gronwall-type inequality.

The global asymptotic dynamics of point vortices for the lake equations is rigorously derived. Vorticity that is initially sharply concentrated around $N$ distinct vortex centers is proven to remain concentrated for all times. Specifically, we prove weak concentration of the vorticity and in addition strong concentration in the direction of the steepest ascent of the depth function. As a consequence, we obtain the motion law of point vortices following at leading order the level lines of the depth function. The lack of strong localization in the second direction is linked to the vortex filamentation phenomena. The main result allows for any fixed number of vortices and general assumptions on the concentration property of the initial data to be considered. No further properties such as a specific profile or symmetry of the data are required. Vanishing topographies on the boundary are included in our analysis. Our method is inspired by recent results on the evolution of vortex rings in 3D axisymmetric incompressible fluids.

This result is achieved after revising the elliptic regularity for a degenerate equation on the associated stream-function, and adapting the method used for construction of classical solutions to the incompressible Euler equations. Second, we show that the weak solutions of the viscous lake equations converge to classical solutions of the inviscid lake equations when the viscosity coefficient goes to zero, which constitutes an important physical validation of these models. The later result is achieved by the use of energy method as in the proofs of Kato-type theorems. This method also allows us to expose a convergence rate.

If the inclusions are distributed on the unit square, this issue is studied recently when $\frac{\tilde d}a$ tends to zero or infinity, leaving aside the critical case where the volume fraction of the porous medium is below its possible maximal value but non-zero. In this paper, we provide the first result in this regime. In contrast with former results, we obtain an Euler type equation where a homogenized term appears in the elliptic problem relating the velocity and the vorticity.
Our analysis is based on the so-called method of reflections whose convergence provides novel estimates on the solutions to the div-curl problem which is involved in the 2D-Euler equations.

For equations of order two with the Dirichlet boundary condition, as the Laplace problem, the Stokes and the Navier-Stokes systems, perforated domains were only studied when the distance between the holes $d_{\varepsilon}$ is equal or much larger than the size of the holes $\varepsilon$. Such a diluted porous medium is interesting because it contains some cases where we have a non-negligible effect on the solution when $(\varepsilon,d_{\varepsilon})\to (0,0)$. Smaller distance was avoided for mathematical reasons and for theses large distances, the geometry of the holes does not affect -- or few -- the asymptotic result. Very recently, it was shown for the 2D-Euler equations that a porous medium is non-negligible only for inter-holes distance much smaller than the size of the holes. For this result, the regularity of holes boundary plays a crucial role, and the permeability criterium depends on the geometry of the lateral boundary. In this paper, we relax slightly the regularity condition, allowing a corner, and we note that a line of irregular obstacles cannot slow down a perfect fluid in any regime such that $\varepsilon \ln d_{\varepsilon} \to 0$.

In this paper, we study the well-posedness for a coupled PDE/ODE system describing the interaction of several massive point vortices moving within a vorticity backgound in a 2D ideal incompressible fluid. The points are driven by the velocity induced by the background vorticity, by the other vortices, and by a Kutta-Joukowski-type lift force creating an additional gyroscopic effect. This system reduces to the so-called vortex-wave system, introduced by Marchioro and Pulvirenti, when the point vortices are massless. On the one hand, we establish existence of a weak solution before the first collision. We show moreover that the background vorticity is transported by the flow associated to the total velocity field. On the other hand, we establish uniqueness in the case where the vorticity is initially constant in a neighborhood of the points vortices. When all the densities of the point vortices have the same sign, no collision occurs in finite time and our results are then global in time. Our proofs strongly rely on the definition of a suitable energy functional.

We consider the motion of several rigid bodies immersed in a two-dimensional incompress-ible perfect fluid, the whole system being bounded by an external impermeable fixed boundary. The fluid motion is described by the incompressible Euler equations and the motion of the rigid bodies is given by Newton's laws with forces due to the fluid pressure. We prove that, for smooth solutions, Newton's equations can be recast as a second-order ODE for the degrees of freedom of the rigid bodies with coefficients depending on the fluid vorticity and on the circulations around the bodies, but not anymore on the fluid pressure. This reformulation highlights geodesic aspects linked to the added mass effect, gyroscopic features generalizing the Kutta-Joukowski-type lift force, including body-body interactions through the potential flows induced by the bodies' motions, body-body interactions through the irrotational flows induced by the bodies' circulations, and interactions between the bodies and the fluid vorticity.

When the velocity field is not a priori known to be globally almost Lipschitz, global uniqueness of solutions to the two-dimensional Euler equations has been established only in some special cases, and the solutions to which these results apply share the property that the diffuse part of the vorticity is constant near the points where the velocity is insufficiently regular. Assuming that the latter holds initially, the challenge is then to propagate this property along the Euler dynamic via an appropriate control of the Lagrangian trajectories. In domains with obtuse corners and sufficiently smooth elsewhere, Yudovich solutions fail to be almost Lipschitz only near these corners, and we investigate necessary and sufficient conditions for the vorticity to remain constant there. We show that if the vorticity is initially constant near the whole boundary, then it remains such forever (and global weak solutions are unique), provided no corner has angle greater than $π$. We also show that this fails in general for domains that do have such corners.

Such a method is well justified in the full plane, thanks to the explicit representation formulas of Biot and Savart. In an exterior domain, we also replace the impermeable boundary by a collection of point vortices generating the circulation around the obstacle. The density of these point vortices is chosen in order that the flow remains tangent at midpoints between adjacent vortices. In this work, we provide a rigorous justification for this method in exterior domains. One of the main mathematical difficulties being that the Biot-Savart kernel defines a singular integral operator when restricted to a curve. For simplicity and clarity, we only treat the case of the unit disk in the plane approximated by a uniformly distributed mesh of point vortices. The complete and general version of our work is available in [arXiv:1707.01458].

The system of equations for water waves, when linearized about equilibrium of a fluid body with a varying bottom boundary, is described by a spectral problem for the Dirichlet -- Neumann operator of the unperturbed free surface. This spectral problem is fundamental in questions of stability, as well as to the perturbation theory of evolution of the free surface in such settings. In addition, the Dirichlet -- Neumann operator is self-adjoint when given an appropriate definition and domain, and it is a novel but very natural spectral problem for a nonlocal operator. In the case in which the bottom boundary varies periodically, $\{y = -h + b(x)\}$ where $b(x+γ) = b(x)$, $γ\in Γ$ a lattice, this spectral problem admits a Bloch decomposition in terms of spectral band functions and their associated band-parametrized eigenfunctions. In this article we describe this analytic construction in the case of a spatially periodic bottom variation from constant depth in two space dimensional water waves problem, giving a construction of the Bloch eigenfunctions and eigenvalues as a function of the band parameters and a description of the Dirichlet -- Neumann operator in terms of the bathymetry $b(x)$. One of the consequences of this description is that the spectrum consists of a series of bands separated by spectral gaps which are zones of forbidden energies. For a given generic periodic bottom profile $b(x)=\varepsilon β(x)$, every gap opens for a sufficiently small value of the perturbation parameter $\varepsilon$.

We study the high Reynolds number limit of a viscous fluid in the presence of a rough boundary. We consider the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier slip boundary condition, in a domain whose boundaries exhibit fast oscillations in the form $x_2 = \varepsilon^{1+α} η(x_1/\varepsilon)$, $α> 0$. Under suitable conditions on the oscillating parameter $\varepsilon$ and the viscosity $ν$, we show that solutions of the Navier-Stokes system converge to solutions of the Euler system in the vanishing limit of both $ν$ and $\varepsilon$. The main issue is that the curvature of the boundary is unbounded as $\varepsilon \rightarrow 0$, which precludes the use of standard methods to obtain the inviscid limit. Our approach is to first construct an accurate boundary layer approximation to the Euler solution in the rough domain, and then to derive stability estimates for this approximation under the Navier-Stokes evolution.

In this article, we study the homogenization limit of a family of solutions to the incompressible 2D Euler equations in the exterior of a family of $n_k$ disjoint disks with centers $\{z^k_i\}$ and radii $\varepsilon_k$. We assume that the initial velocities $u_0^k$ are smooth, divergence-free, tangent to the boundary and that they vanish at infinity. We allow, but we do not require, $n_k \to \infty$, and we assume $\varepsilon_k \to 0$ as $k\to \infty$.
Let $γ^k_i$ be the circulation of $u_0^k$ around the circle $\{|x-z^k_i|=\varepsilon_k\}$. We prove that the homogenization limit retains information on the circulations as a time-independent coefficient. More precisely, we assume that: (1) $ω_0^k = \mbox{ curl }u_0^k$ has a uniform compact support and converges weakly in $L^{p_0}$, for some $p_0>2$, to $ω_0 \in L^{p_0}_{c}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, (2) $\sum_{i=1}^{n_k} γ^k_i δ_{z^k_i} \rightharpoonup μ$ weak-$\ast$ in $\mathcal{BM}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for some bounded Radon measure $μ$, and (3) the radii $\varepsilon_k$ are sufficiently small. Then the corresponding solutions $u^k$ converge strongly to a weak solution $u$ of a modified Euler system in the full plane. This modified Euler system is given, in vorticity formulation, by an active scalar transport equation for the quantity $ω=\mbox{ curl } u$, with initial data $ω_0$, where the transporting velocity field is generated from $ω$ so that its curl is $ω+ μ$. As a byproduct, we obtain a new existence result for this modified Euler system.

We study the asymptotic behavior of the motion of an ideal incompressible fluid in a perforated domain. The porous medium is composed of inclusions of size $\varepsilon$ separated by distances $d_\varepsilon$ and the fluid fills the exterior.
If the inclusions are distributed on the unit square, the asymptotic behavior depends on the limit of $\frac{d_{\varepsilon}}\varepsilon$ when $\varepsilon$ goes to zero. If $\frac{d_{\varepsilon}}\varepsilon\to \infty$, then the limit motion is not perturbed by the porous medium, namely we recover the Euler solution in the whole space. On the contrary, if $\frac{d_{\varepsilon}}\varepsilon\to 0$, then the fluid cannot penetrate the porous region, namely the limit velocity verifies the Euler equations in the exterior of an impermeable square.
If the inclusions are distributed on the unit segment then the behavior depends on the geometry of the inclusion: it is determined by the limit of $\frac{d_{\varepsilon}}{\varepsilon^{2+\frac1γ}}$ where $γ\in (0,\infty]$ is related to the geometry of the lateral boundaries of the obstacles. If $\frac{d_{\varepsilon}}{\varepsilon^{2+\frac1γ}} \to \infty$, then the presence of holes is not felt at the limit, whereas an impermeable wall appears if this limit is zero. Therefore, for a distribution in one direction, the critical distance depends on the shape of the inclusions. In particular it is equal to $\varepsilon^3$ for balls.

This paper is a follow-up of article [Gerard-Varet and Lacave, ARMA 2013], on the existence of global weak solutions to the two dimensional Euler equations in singular domains. In [Gerard-Varet and Lacave, ARMA 2013], we have established the existence of weak solutions for a large class of bounded domains, with initial vorticity in $L^p$ ($p>1$). For unbounded domains, we have proved a similar result only when the initial vorticity is in $L^p_{c}$ ($p>2$) and when the domain is the exterior of a single obstacle. The goal here is to retrieve these two restrictions: we consider general initial vorticity in $L^1\cap L^p$ ($p>1$), outside an arbitrary number of obstacles (not reduced to points).

We compare the long-time behaviour of solutions to this initial-boundary value problem with the long-time behaviour of solutions of the analogous Cauchy problem in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$. We find that the long-time asymptotics of solutions to both problems coincide either in the case of small initial data in the weak $L^{n}$-space or for a certain class of large initial data.

In the case of sharp domains, the question of uniqueness for such weak solutions is more involved due to the bad behavior of $Δ^{-1}$ close to the boundary. In the present work, we show uniqueness for any bounded and simply connected domain with a finite number of corners of angles smaller than $π/2$. Our strategy relies on a log-Lipschitz type regularity for the velocity field.

We show that the lake equations are structurally stable under Hausdorff approximations of the fluid domain and $L^p$ perturbations of the depth. As a byproduct, we obtain the existence of a weak solution to the lake equations in the case of singular domains and rough bottoms. Our result thus extends earlier works by Bresch and Métivier treating the lake equations with a fixed topography and by Gérard-Varet and Lacave treating the Euler equations in singular domains.

We first derive $L^p$-$L^q$ decay estimates for the linearized equations and compute the first term in the asymptotic expansion of the solutions of the linearized equations. We then apply these computations to derive time-decay estimates for the solutions to the full Navier-Stokes fluid-rigid disk system.

Abstract:
In this article, we consider Leray solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of one obstacle in 3D and we study the asymptotic behavior of these solutions when the obstacle shrinks to a curve or to a surface. In particular, we will prove that a solid curve has no effect on the motion of a viscous fluid, so it is a removable singularity for these equations.

The present work is about the uniqueness of such a solution when the domain is the exterior or the interior of a simply connected set with corners, although the velocity blows up near these corners. In the exterior of a curve with two end-points, it is showed in [Lacave, Two Dimensional Incompressible Ideal Flow Around a Thin Obstacle Tending to a Curve, Ann. IHP, Anl \textbf{26} (2009), 1121-1148] that this solution has some interesting properties, as to be seen as a special vortex sheet. Therefore, we prove the uniqueness, whereas the problem of general vortex sheets is open.

We establish the existence of global weak solutions of the 2D incompressible Euler equation, for a large class of non-smooth open sets. These open sets are the complements (in a simply connected domain) of a finite number of connected compact sets with positive capacity. Existence of weak solutions with $L^p$ vorticity is deduced from an approximation argument, that relates to the so-called $Γ$-convergence of domains. Our results complete those obtained for convex domains, or for domains with asymptotically small holes. Connection is made to the recent papers of the second author on the Euler equation in the exterior of a Jordan arc.
