Abstract:
The multi planet system HR8799 is the first target observed with MIRI's coronagraphs as part of the MIRI-EC Guaranteed Time Observations exoplanets programme in Nov. 2022. We obtained deep observations in three coronagraphic filters from 10 to 15mic (F1065C, F1140C, F1550C), and one standard imaging filter at 20 mic (F2100W), with the goal to extract the photometry of the four planets, as well as…

The multi planet system HR8799 is the first target observed with MIRI's coronagraphs as part of the MIRI-EC Guaranteed Time Observations exoplanets programme in Nov. 2022. We obtained deep observations in three coronagraphic filters from 10 to 15mic (F1065C, F1140C, F1550C), and one standard imaging filter at 20 mic (F2100W), with the goal to extract the photometry of the four planets, as well as to detect and investigate the distribution of circumstellar dust. Using dedicated observations of a reference star, we tested several algorithms to subtract the stellar diffraction pattern while preserving the fluxes of planets, which can be significantly affected by over-subtraction. Measuring correctly the planet's flux values requires accounting for the attenuation by the coronagraphs as a function of their position, and to estimate the normalisation with respect to the central star. We tested several procedures to derive averaged photometric values and error bars. These observations have enabled us to obtain two main results. First of all, the four planets in the system are well recovered, and their mid-IR fluxes, combined with near-IR flux values from the literature, are compared to two exoplanet atmosphere models, ATMO and Exo-REM. As a main outcome, the MIRI photometric data points imply larger radii (0.86 or 1.07 RJ for planet b) and cooler temperatures (950 or 1100 K for planet b), especially for planet b, in better agreement with evolutionary models. Second of all, these JWST/MIRI coronagraphic data also deliver the first spatially resolved detection of the inner warm debris disk, the radius of which is constrained to about 15 au, with flux densities comparable, but lower than former unresolved spectroscopic measurements with Spitzer. abridged...

The evaporation of drops of colloidal suspensions plays an important role in numerous contexts, such as the production of powdered dairies, the synthesis of functional supraparticles, and virus and bacteria survival in aerosols or drops on surfaces. The presence of colloidal particles in the evaporating drop eventually leads to the formation of a dense shell that may undergo a shape instability. Previous works propose that, for drops evaporating very fast, the instability occurs when the particles form a rigid porous solid, constituted of permanently aggregated particles at random close packing. To date, however, no measurements could directly test this scenario and assess whether it also applies to drops drying at lower evaporation rates, severely limiting our understanding of this phenomenon and the possibility of harnessing it in applications. Here, we combine macroscopic imaging and space- and time-resolved measurements of the microscopic dynamics of colloidal nanoparticles in drying drops, measuring the evolution of the thickness of the shell and the spatial distribution and mobility of the nanoparticles. We find that, above a threshold evaporation rate, the drop undergoes successively two distinct shape instabilities. While the second instability is due to the permanent aggregation of nanoparticles, as hypothesized in previous works on fast-evaporating drops, we show that the first one results from a reversible glass transition of the shell, unreported so far. We rationalize our findings and discuss their implications in the framework of a unified state diagram for the drying of colloidal drops.

The detection and characterization of exoplanets and brown dwarfs (BDs) around massive AF-type stars is essential to investigate and constrain the impact of stellar mass on planet properties. However, such targets are still poorly explored in radial velocity (RV) surveys because they only feature a small number of stellar lines and those are usually broadened and blended by stellar rotation as well as stellar jitter. As a result, the available information about the formation and evolution of planets and BDs around hot stars is limited. We aim to increase the sample and precisely measure the masses and eccentricities of giant planets and BDs transiting AF-type stars detected by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We followed bright (V < 12 mag) stars with $T_{\mathrm{eff}}$ > 6200 K that host giant companions (R > 7 $\mathrm{R_{\rm \oplus}}$) using ground-based photometric observations as well as high precision RV measurements from the CORALIE, CHIRON, TRES, FEROS, and MINERVA-Australis spectrographs. In the context, we present the discovery of three BD companions, TOI-629b, TOI-1982b, and TOI-2543b, and one massive planet, TOI-1107b. From the joint analysis we find the BDs have masses between 66 and 68 $\mathrm{M_{\rm Jup}}$, periods between 7.54 and 17.17 days, and radii between 0.95 and 1.11 $\mathrm{R_{\rm Jup}}$. The hot Jupiter TOI-1107b has an orbital period of 4.08 days, a radius of 1.30 $\mathrm{R_{\rm Jup}}$, and a mass of 3.35 $\mathrm{M_{\rm Jup}}$. As a by-product of this program, we identified four low-mass eclipsing components (TOI-288b, TOI-446b, TOI-478b, and TOI-764b). Both TOI-1107b and TOI-1982b present an anomalously inflated radius with respect to the age of these systems. TOI-629 is among the hottest stars with a known transiting brown dwarf. TOI-629b and TOI-1982b are among the most eccentric brown dwarfs.

Increasing the level of wavefront correction at the telescopes is expected to improve the coupling into the single-mode fibres of the instruments, and enable robust fringe tracking even in degraded conditions. We deployed a new adaptive optics module for interferometry (NAOMI) on the Auxiliary Telescopes. We present its design, performance, and effect on the observations that are carried out with the interferometric instruments.

Hadoop MapReduce is a framework for distributed storage and processing of large datasets that is quite popular in big data analytics. It has various configuration parameters (knobs) which play an important role in deciding the performance i.e., the execution time of a given big data processing job. Default values of these parameters do not always result in good performance and hence it is important to tune them. However, there is inherent difficulty in tuning the parameters due to two important reasons - firstly, the parameter search space is large and secondly, there are cross-parameter interactions. Hence, there is a need for a dimensionality-free method which can automatically tune the configuration parameters by taking into account the cross-parameter dependencies. In this paper, we propose a novel Hadoop parameter tuning methodology, based on a noisy gradient algorithm known as the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA). The SPSA algorithm tunes the parameters by directly observing the performance of the Hadoop MapReduce system. The approach followed is independent of parameter dimensions and requires only $2$ observations per iteration while tuning. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology in achieving good performance on popular Hadoop benchmarks namely \emph{Grep}, \emph{Bigram}, \emph{Inverted Index}, \emph{Word Co-occurrence} and \emph{Terasort}. Our method, when tested on a 25 node Hadoop cluster shows 66\% decrease in execution time of Hadoop jobs on an average, when compared to the default configuration. Further, we also observe a reduction of 45\% in execution times, when compared to prior methods.

In this paper I present a conjecture for a recursive algorithm that finds each permutation of combining two sets of objects (AKA the Shuffle Product). This algorithm provides an efficient way to navigate this problem, as each atomic operation yields a permutation of the union. The permutations of the union of the two sets are represented as binary integers which are then manipulated mathematically to find the next permutation. The routes taken to find each of the permutations then form a series of associations or adjacencies which can be represented in a tree graph which appears to possess some properties of a fractal.
This algorithm was discovered while attempting to identify every possible end-state of a Tic-Tac-Toe (Naughts and Crosses) board. It was found to be a viable and efficient solution to the problem, and now---in its more generalized state---it is my belief that it may find applications among a wide range of theoretical and applied sciences.
I hypothesize that, due to the fractal-like nature of the tree it traverses, this algorithm sheds light on a more generic principle of combinatorics and as such could be further generalized to perhaps be applied to the union of any number of sets.

In this paper we present maps of K, eU, and eTh abundances of Elba Island (Italy) obtained with a multivariate spatial interpolation of airborne γ-ray data using the constraints of the geologic map. The radiometric measurements were performed by a module of four NaI(Tl) crystals of 16 L mounted on an autogyro. We applied the collocated cokriging (CCoK) as a multivariate estimation method for interpolating the primary under-sampled airborne γ-ray data considering the well-sampled geological information as ancillary variables. A random number has been assigned to each of 73 geological formations identified in the geological map at scale 1:10,000. The non-dependency of the estimated results from the random numbering process has been tested for three distinct models. The experimental cross-semivariograms constructed for radioelement-geology couples show well-defined co-variability structures for both direct and crossed variograms. The high statistical correlations among K, eU, and eTh measurements are confirmed also by the same maximum distance of spatial autocorrelation. Combining the smoothing effects of probabilistic interpolator and the abrupt discontinuities of the geological map, the results show a distinct correlation between the geological formation and radioactivity content. The contour of Mt. Capanne pluton can be distinguished by high K, eU and eTh abundances, while different degrees of radioactivity content identify the tectonic units. A clear anomaly of high K content in the Mt. Calamita promontory confirms the presence of felsic dykes and hydrothermal veins not reported in our geological map. Although we assign a unique number to each geological formation, the method shows that the internal variability of the radiometric data is not biased by the multivariate interpolation.

We report the result of the analysis of the light curve of the microlensing event MOA-2009-BLG-016. The light curve is characterized by a short-duration anomaly near the peak and an overall asymmetry. We find that the peak anomaly is due to a binary companion to the primary lens and the asymmetry of the light curve is explained by the parallax effect caused by the acceleration of the observer over the course of the event due to the orbital motion of the Earth around the Sun. In addition, we detect evidence for the effect of the finite size of the source near the peak of the event, which allows us to measure the angular Einstein radius of the lens system. The Einstein radius combined with the microlens parallax allows us to determine the total mass of the lens and the distance to the lens. We identify three distinct classes of degenerate solutions for the binary lens parameters, where two are manifestations of the previously identified degeneracies of close/wide binaries and positive/negative impact parameters, while the third class is caused by the symmetric cycloid shape of the caustic. We find that, for the best-fit solution, the estimated mass of the lower-mass component of the binary is (0.04 +- 0.01) M_sun, implying a brown-dwarf companion. However, there exists a solution that is worse only by Δχ^2 ~ 3 for which the mass of the secondary is above the hydrogen-burning limit. Unfortunately, resolving these two degenerate solutions will be difficult as the relative lens-source proper motions for both are similar and small (~ 1 mas/yr) and thus the lens will remain blended with the source for the next several decades.

Chaotic Synchronization of Symbolic Information in the Discrete Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation

Abstract:
We have studied the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equation (DNLSE) with on-site defects and periodic boundary conditions. When the array dynamics becomes chaotic, the otherwise quasiperiodic amplitude correlations between the oscillators are destroyed. However, we show that synchronization of symbolic information of suitable amplitude signals is possible in this hamiltonian system.
