Master-field simulations of QCD
Abstract: We report on the first master-field simulations of QCD with 2+1 dynamical quark flavours using non-perturbatively improved stabilised Wilson fermions. Our simulations are performed at a lattice spacing of 0.094 fm with 96 and 192 points in each direction. On both lattices, the pion and kaon masses are equal to 270 and 450 MeV, respectively, and $m_πL$ thus reaches an unprecedented value of 25 on t… ▽ More

On the chiral anomaly and the Yang-Mills gradient flow
Abstract: There are currently two singularity-free universal expressions for the topological susceptibility in QCD, one based on the Yang-Mills gradient flow and the other on density-chain correlation functions. While the latter link the susceptibility to the anomalous chiral Ward identities, the gradient flow permits the emergence of the topological sectors in lattice QCD to be understood. Here the two exp… ▽ More

Renormalization of the topological charge density in QCD with dimensional regularization
Abstract: To all orders of perturbation theory, the renormalization of the topological charge density in dimensionally regularized QCD is shown to require no more than an additive renormalization proportional to the divergence of the flavour-singlet axial current. The proof is based on the standard BRS analysis of the QCD vertex functional in the background gauge and exploits the special algebraic propertie… ▽ More

Stochastic locality and master-field simulations of very large lattices
Abstract: In lattice QCD and other field theories with a mass gap, the field variables in distant regions of a physically large lattice are only weakly correlated. Locality and exponential error reduction in numerical lattice gauge theory
Abstract: In non-abelian gauge theories without matter fields, expectation values of large Wilson loops and loop correlation functions are difficult to compute through numerical simulation, because the signal-to-noise ratio is very rapidly decaying for increasing loop sizes. Using a multilevel scheme that exploits the locality of the theory, we show that the statistical errors in such calculations can be… ▽ More

A note on the practical feasibility of domain-wall fermions
Abstract: Domain-wall fermions preserve chiral symmetry up to terms that decrease exponentially when the lattice size in the fifth dimension is taken to infinity. The associated rates of convergence are given by the low-lying eigenvalues of a simple local operator in four dimensions. These can be computed using the Ritz functional technique and it turns out that the convergence tends to be extremely slow… ▽ More

Lattice regularization of chiral gauge theories to all orders of perturbation theory
Abstract: In the framework of perturbation theory, it is possible to put chiral gauge theories on the lattice without violating the gauge symmetry or other fundamental principles, provided the fermion representation of the gauge group is anomaly-free. The basic elements of this construction (which starts from the Ginsparg-Wilson relation) are briefly recalled and the exact cancellation of the gauge anomal… ▽ More

Weak transition matrix elements from finite-volume correlation functions
Abstract: The two-body decay rate of a weakly decaying particle (such as the kaon) is shown to be proportional to the square of a well-defined transition matrix element in finite volume. Contrary to the physical amplitude, the latter can be extracted from finite-volume correlation functions in euclidean space without analytic continuation. The K -> pi pi transitions and other non-leptonic decays thus beco… ▽ More

Chiral gauge theories on the lattice with exact gauge invariance
Abstract: A recently proposed formulation of chiral lattice gauge theories is reviewed, in which the locality and gauge invariance of the theory can be preserved if the fermion representation of the gauge group is anomaly-free.

Weyl fermions on the lattice and the non-abelian gauge anomaly
Abstract: Starting from the Ginsparg-Wilson relation, a general construction of chiral gauge theories on the lattice is described. Local and global anomalies are easily discussed in this framework and a closed expression for the effective action can be obtained. Particular attention is paid to the non-abelian gauge anomaly, which is shown to be related to a local topological field on the lattice represent… ▽ More

Abelian chiral gauge theories on the lattice with exact gauge invariance
Abstract: It is shown that U(1) chiral gauge theories with anomaly-free multiplets of Weyl fermions can be put on the lattice without breaking the gauge invariance or violating any other fundamental principle. The Ginsparg-Wilson relation plays a key role in this construction, which is non-perturbative and includes all topological sectors of the theory in finite volume. In particular, the cancellation of… ▽ More

Non-perturbative quark mass renormalization in quenched lattice QCD
Abstract: The renormalization factor relating the bare to the renormalization group invariant quark masses is accurately calculated in quenched lattice QCD using a recursive finite-size technique. The result is presented in the form of a product of a universal factor times another factor, which depends on the details of the lattice theory but is easy to compute, since it does not involve any large scale d… ▽ More

Topology and the axial anomaly in abelian lattice gauge theories
Abstract: The axial anomaly in abelian lattice gauge theories is shown to be equal to a simple quadratic expression in the gauge field tensor plus a removable divergence term if the lattice Dirac operator satisfies the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. The theorem is a consequence of the locality, the gauge invariance and the topological nature of the anomaly and does not refer to any other properties of the latt… ▽ More
