In the modeling of parasite transmission dynamics, understanding the reproductive characteristics of these parasites is crucial.
This paper presents a mathematical model that explores the reproductive behavior of dioecious parasites and its impact on transmission dynamics.
Specifically, the study focuses on the investigation of various reproductive variables such as the mating probability and the fertilized egg production in the case of helminth parasites.
While previous studies have commonly assumed Poisson and negative binomial distributions to describe the distribution of parasites among hosts, this study adopts an arbitrary distribution model and examines its consequences on some reproductive variables. These variables include mean number of fertile females, mean egg production, mating probability and mean fertilized egg production.
In addition, the study of these variables takes into account the sex distribution of the parasites and whether male and female parasites are considered to be distributed together or separately.
We show that the models obtained for the case of male and female parasites distributed separately in the hosts are ecologically unrealistic.
We present the results obtained for some specific models and we tested the models obtained in this work using Monte Carlo simulations.

Minimal trap spaces (MTSs) capture subspaces in which the Boolean dynamics is trapped, whatever the update mode. They correspond to the attractors of the most permissive mode. Due to their versatility, the computation of MTSs has recently gained traction, essentially by focusing on their enumeration. In this paper, we address the logical reasoning on universal properties of MTSs in the scope of two problems: the reprogramming of Boolean networks for identifying the permanent freeze of Boolean variables that enforce a given property on all the MTSs, and the synthesis of Boolean networks from universal properties on their MTSs. Both problems reduce to solving the satisfiability of quantified propositional logic formula with 3 levels of quantifiers ($\exists\forall\exists$). In this paper, we introduce a Counter-Example Guided Refinement Abstraction (CEGAR) to efficiently solve these problems by coupling the resolution of two simpler formulas. We provide a prototype relying on Answer-Set Programming for each formula and show its tractability on a wide range of Boolean models of biological networks.

In this work we present a general framework for the modeling of the transmission dynamics of macroparasites which do not reproduce within the host like Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, Necator americanus y Ancylostoma duodenale. The basic models are derived from general probabilistic models for the parasite density-dependent mating probability. Here we considered the particular, and common case, of a negative binomial distribution for the number of parasites in hosts. We find the basic reproductive number and we show that the system exhibit a saddle-node bifurcation at some value of the basic reproduction number. We also found the equilibria and basic reproduction number of a model for the more general case of heteregeneous host populations.

The reproductive habits of helminths are important for the study of the dynamics of their transmission. For populations of parasites distributed by Poisson or negative binomial models, these habits have already been studied. However, there are other statistical models that describe these populations, such as zero-inflated models, but where reproductive characteristics were not analyzed. Using an arbitrary model for the parasite population, we model the distribution of females and males per host, and from these we model the different reproductive variables such as the mean number of fertile females, the mean egg production, the mating probability, the mean fertilized egg production. We show that these variables change due to the effects of a negative density-dependence fecundity, a characteristic of helminth parasites. We present the results obtained for some particular models.

No closed formula is available and numerical estimation requires sophisticated methods. Using data from the literature we show that simple alternatives to negative binomial, like zero-inflated geometric or hurdle geometric distributions, produce a good and even better fit to data than negative binomial distribution. We derived closed simple formulas for the maximum likelihood parameter estimation which constitutes a significant advantage of these distributions over negative binomial distribution.

We investigate the specific influence of structural disorder on the suppression of antiferromagnetic order and on the emergence of cuprate superconductivity. We investigate the specific influence of structural disorder on the suppression of antiferromagnetic order and on the emergence of cuprate superconductivity. We single out pure disorder, by focusing on a series of Y$_{z}$Eu$_{1-z}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+y}$ samples at fixed oxygen content $y=0.35$, in the range $0\le z\le 1$. The gradual Y/Eu isovalent substitution smoothly drives the system through the Mott-insulator to superconductor transition from a full antiferromagnet with Néel transition $T_N=320$ K at $z=0$ to a bulk superconductor with superconducting critical temperature $T_c=18$ K at $z=1$, YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.35}$. The electronic properties are finely tuned by gradual lattice deformations induced by the different cationic radii of the two lanthanides, inducing a continuous change of the basal Cu(1)-O chain length, as well as a controlled amount of disorder in the active Cu(2)O$_2$ bilayers. We check that internal charge transfer from the basal to the active plane is entirely responsible for the do** of the latter and we show that superconductivity emerges with orthorhombicity. By comparing transition temperatures with those of the isoelectronic clean system we deterime the influence of pure structural disorder connected with the Y/Eu alloy.

Density functional theory provides the most widespread framework for the realistic description of the electronic structure of solids, but the description of strongly-correlated systems has remained so far elusive. Here we consider a particular limit of electrons in a periodic ionic potential in which a one-band description becomes exact all the way from the weakly-correlated metallic regime to the strongly-correlated Mott-Hubbard regime. We provide a necessary condition a density functional should fulfill to describe Mott-Hubbard behavior and show that it is not satisfied by standard and widely used local, semilocal and hybrid functionals. We illustrate the condition in the case of a few-atom system and provide an analytic approximation to the exact exchange-correlation potential based on a variational wave function which shows explicitly the correct behavior providing a robust scheme to combine lattice and continuum methods.

We find a strong tendency of do** oxygens to order into non-magnetic Cu$^{1+}$O$_x$ chains at any $x$. Ordering produces one-dimensional metallic bands, while configurations with non-aligned oxygens are insulating. The Cu$^{2+}$O$_2$ planes remain insulating and antiferromagnetic up to a threshold between $x$=0.25 and 0.5, above which a paramagnetic normal-metal state prevails. The in-plane antiferro-paramagnetic competition depends on $x$, but only weakly on the ordering state of the chains.
