Abstract:
The GABRIELA [1] set-up is used at the FLNR to perform detailed nuclear structure studies of transfermium nuclei. Following the modernization of the VASSILISSA separator (SHELS) [2] the GABRIELA detection system has also been upgraded. The characteristics of the upgraded detection system will be presented along with results from some recent electronics tests.

Recent progress in the field of topological states of matter(1,2) has largely been initiated by the discovery of bismuth and antimony chalcogenide bulk topological insulators (TIs)(3-6), followed by closely related ternary compounds(7-16) and predictions of several weak TIs(17-19). However, both the conceptual richness of Z$_2$ classification of TIs as well as their structural and compositional diversity are far from being fully exploited. Here, a new Z$_2$ topological insulator is theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed in the $β$-phase of quasi-one-dimensional bismuth iodide Bi$_4$I$_4$. The electronic structure of $β$-Bi$_4$I$_4$, characterized by Z$_2$ invariants (1;110), is in proximity of both the weak TI phase (0;001) and the trivial insulator phase (0;000). Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on the (001) surface reveal a highly anisotropic band-crossing feature located at the point of the surface Brillouin zone and showing no dispersion with the photon energy, thus being fully consistent with the theoretical prediction.

We present surface photometry and metallicity measurements for 104 nearby dwarf galaxies imaged with the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope.
In addition, we carried out photometry for 26 galaxies of the sample and for Sextans B on images of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our sample comprises dwarf spheroidal, irregular and transition type galaxies located within ~10 Mpc in the field and in nearby groups: M81, Centaurus A, Sculptor, and Canes Venatici I cloud. It is found that the early-type galaxies have on average higher metallicity at a given luminosity in comparison to the late-type objects. Dwarf galaxies with M_B > -12 -- -13 mag deviate toward larger scale lengths from the scale length -- luminosity relation common for spiral galaxies, h \propto L^{0.5}_B. The following correlations between fundamental parameters of the galaxies are consistent with expectations if there is pronounced gas-loss through galactic winds: 1) between the luminosity of early-type dwarf galaxies and the mean metallicity of constituent red giant branch stars, Z ~ L^0.4, 2) between mean surface brightness within the 25 mag/sq.arcsec isophote and the corresponding absolute magnitude in the V and I bands, SB_25 ~ 0.3 M_25, and 3) between the central surface brightness (or effective surface brightness) and integrated absolute magnitude of galaxies in the V and I bands, SB_0 ~ 0.5 M_L, SB_e ~ 0.5 M_e. The knowledge of basic photometric parameters for a large sample of dwarf galaxies is essential for a better understanding of their evolution.

The semiclassical formalism for numerical calculation of the rate of tunneling transitions induced by N particles with total energy E of order or higher than the height of the barrier is developed. The formalism is applied to the induced false vacuum decay in the massive four-dimensional $-λφ^4$ model. The decay rate, as a function of E and N, is calculated numerically in the range $0.4\lsim E/E_{sph}\lsim 3.5$ and $0.25 \lsim N/N_{sph}\lsim 1.0$, where $E_{sph}$ and $N_{sph}$ are the energy and the number of particles in the analog of the sphaleron configuration. The results imply that the ``two-particle'' cross section of the false vacuum decay is exponentially suppressed at least up to energies of order $10 E_{sph}$. At $E\sim E_{sph}$, this exponential suppression is estimated as about 80% of the zero energy suppression.

The results of the mathematical theory of asymptotic operation developed in hep-th/9612037 are applied to problems of immediate physical interest. First, the problem of UV renormalizationis analyzed from the viewpoint of asymptotic behaviour of integrands in momentum representation. A new prescription for UV renormalization in momentum space representation is presented (generalized minimal subtraction scheme); it ensures UV convergence of renormalized diagrams by construction, makes no use of special (e.g. dimensional) regularizations, and comprizes massless renormalization schemes (including the MS scheme). Then we present formal regularization-independent proofs of general formulae for Euclidean asymptotic expansions of renormalized Feynman diagrams (inlcuding short-distance OPE, heavy mass expansions and mixed asymptotic regimes etc.) derived earlier in the context of dimensional regularization. This result, together with the new variant of UV renormalization, demonstrates the power of the new techniques based on a systematic use of the theory of distributions and establishes the method of As-operation as a comprehensive full-fledged---and inherently more powerful---alternative to the BPHZ approach.

We present a systematic description of the mathematical techniques for studying multiloop Feynman diagrams which constitutes a full-fledged and inherently more powerful alternative to the BPHZ theory. The new techniques emerged as a formalization of the reasoning behind a recent series of record multiloop calculations in perturbative quantum field theory. It is based on a systematic use of the ideas and notions of the distribution theory. We identify the problem of asymptotic expansion of products of singular functions in the sense of distributions as a key problem of the theory of asymptotic expansions of multiloop Feynman diagrams. Its complete solution for the case of Euclidean Feynman diagrams (the so-called Euclidean asymptotic operation for products of singular functions) is explicitly constructed and studied.

We calculate numerically the probability $\exp[ {1\overλ} F(E/E_{sph},N/N_{sph})]$ of the false vacuum decay in the massive four-dimensional $-λφ^4$ model from multiparticle initial states with fixed number of particles $N$ and energy $E$ greater than the height of the barrier $E_{sph}$. We find that at $E\lsim 3E_{sph}$ and $N\lsim 0.4N_{sph}$ the decay is classically forbidden and thus is exponentially suppressed. We argue that the classically forbidden region extends at small $N$ at least up to $E\sim 10 E_{sph}$ and, most likely, to all energies. Our data suggest that the false vacuum decay induced by two-particle collisions is exponentially suppressed at all energies.
