Electron-electron scattering on the order of a few to tens of femtoseconds plays a crucial role in the ultrafast electron dynamics of conventional metals. When mid-infrared light is used for driving and the period of light field is comparable to the scattering time in metals, unique light-driven states and nonlinear optical responses associated with the scattering process are expected to occur. Here, we use high-harmonics spectroscopy to investigate the effect of electron-electron scattering on the electron dynamics in thin film 2H-NbSe$_2$ driven by a mid-infrared field. We observed odd-order high harmonics up to 9th order as well as a broadband emission from hot electrons in the energy range from 1.5 to 4.0 eV. The electron-electron scattering time in NbSe$_2$ was estimated from the broadband emission to be almost the same as the period of the mid-infrared light field. A comparison between experimental results and a numerical calculation reveals that a kind of resonance between scattering and driving enhances the non-perturbative behavior of high harmonics in metals, causing a highly non-equilibrium electronic state corresponding to several thousand Kelvin.

Floquet engineering of electronic systems is a promising way of controlling quantum material properties on an ultrafast time scale. So far, the energy structure of Floquet states in solids has been observed through time and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy or pump-probe measurement techniques. However, the dynamical aspects of the photon-dressed states under ultrashort pulse driving have not been explored yet. Their dynamics become highly sensitive to the envelope of the driving field when the light-matter interaction enters non-perturbative regime, and thus, understanding of them is crucial for ultrafast manipulation of quantum state. Here, we observed coherent exciton emissions under intense and non-resonant mid-infrared fields in monolayer WSe2 at room temperature, which is unexpected in perturbative nonlinear optics. Together with numerical calculations, our measurements revealed that the coherent exciton emission reflects the diabatic and adiabatic dynamics of Floquet states. Our results provide a new approach to probing the dynamics of the Floquet state and lead to control of quantum materials through pulse sha** of the driving field.

High harmonic generation (HHG) in solids reflects the underlying nonperturbative nonlinear dynamics of electrons in a strong light field and is a powerful tool for ultrafast spectroscopy of electronic structures. Photo-carrier do** allows us to understand the carrier dynamics and the correlations between the carriers in the HHG process. Here, we study the effect of incoherent electron-hole pairs on HHG in an atomically thin semiconductor. The experimentally observed response to photo-carrier do** is successfully reproduced in numerical simulations incorporating the photo-excited carrier distribution, excitonic Coulomb interaction and electron-electron scattering effects. The simulation results reveal that the presence of photo-carriers enhances the intraband current that contributes to high harmonics below the absorption edge. We also clarify that the excitation-induced dephasing process rather than the phase-space filling effect is the dominant mechanism reducing the higher order harmonics above the absorption edge. Our work provides a deeper understanding of high harmonic spectroscopy and the optimum conditions for generating extreme ultraviolet light from solids.

We have studied the onset temperature of the superconductivity Tc_onset of the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4, by precisely controlling the direction of the magnetic field H. We compare the results of two samples with nearly the same onset temperature but with different scattering relaxation time tau. We revealed a complicated interplay of a variety of pair-breaking effects and mechanisms that overcome these pair-breaking effects. In low fields, the linear temperature dependences of the onset curves in the H-T phase diagrams are governed by the orbital pair-breaking effect. The dips in the in-plane field-angle phi dependence of Tc_onset, which were only observed in the long-tau sample, provides definitive evidence that the field-induced dimensional crossover enhances the superconductivity if the field direction is more than about 19-degrees away from the a axis. In the high-field regime for H//a, the upturn of the onset curve for the long-tau sample indicates a new superconducting state that overcomes the Pauli pair-breaking effect but is easily suppressed by impurity scatterings. The Pauli effect is also overcome for H//b' by a realization of another state for which the maximum of Tc_onset(phi) occurs in a direction different from the crystalline axes. The effect on Tc_onset of tilting the applied field out of the conductive plane suggests that the Pauli effect plays a significant role in determining Tc_onset. The most plausible explanation of these results is that (TMTSF)2ClO4 is a singlet superconductor and exhibits Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states in high fields.

We report the magnetic field-amplitude and field-angle dependence of the superconducting onset temperature Tc_onset of the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4 in magnetic fields H accurately aligned to the conductive ab' plane. We revealed that the rapid increase of the onset fields at low temperatures occurs both for H // b' and H // a, irrespective of the carrier confinement. Moreover, in the vicinity of the Pauli limiting field, we report a shift of a principal axis of the in-plane field-angle dependence of Tc_onset away from the b' axis. This feature may be related to an occurrence of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phases.
