We investigated Fe-substitution effects on ferromagnetic fluctuations in the superconducting overdoped and non-superconducting heavily overdoped regimes of the Bi-2201 cuprates by the magnetization and electrical-resistivity measurements. It was found that the spin-glass state was induced at low temperatures by the Fe substitution. The Curie constant and the effective Bohr magneton, estimated from the magnetic susceptibility, as well as the dimensionality of the ferromagnetic fluctuations from the resistivity, suggest the enhancement of the ferromagnetic fluctuations owing to the Fe substitution. A ferromagnetic spin-cluster model is proposed in the heavily overdoped regime of Bi-2201, while an antiferromagnetic spin-cluster model has been proposed in the overdoped regime of Bi-2201 [Hiraka et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 144501 (2010)].

Low temperature magnetic properties were investigated on the gold nano particles (GNP) with an average size of 11.5 nm, assembled with molecules of ruthenium complex (Ru0) and phenylboronic acid (B0) by the proton nuclear resonance (1H-NMR) and susceptibility measurements. The temperature dependence of the NMR shift and the uniform susceptibility was described as the sum of the Curie-Weiss term and a positive constant term. From the former, the average number of Ru0 on each GNP was estimated to be 118, which is 23 % of the calculation. The finite positive constant term shows a clear contrast with the well-known fact that the bulk gold is diamagnetic. Finally, a disappearance of the motional narrowing effect in the proton NMR spectra below 60 K indicates that the wavering motion of Ru0 complexes on GNP at room temperature is frozen at low temperatures.

An antiferromagnetically ordered state appears below $T_{\rm N} = 26.5 \pm 0.8$ K. We consider that the probable spin model for CrVMoO$_7$ is an interacting antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ dimer model. We evaluated the intradimer interaction $J$ to be $25 \pm 1$ K and the effective interdimer interaction $J_{\rm eff}$ to be $8.8 \pm 1$ K. CrVMoO$_7$ is a rare spin dimer compound that shows an antiferromagnetically ordered state at atmospheric pressure and zero magnetic field. The magnitude of ordered moments is $0.73(2) μ_{\rm B}$. It is much smaller than a classical value $\sim 3 μ_{\rm B}$. Longitudinal-mode magnetic excitations may be observable in single crystalline CrVMoO$_7$.

We have measured the thermal conductivity of the geometrically frustrated quasi-onedimensional spin system Cu$_3$Mo$_2$O$_9$ in magnetic fields. A contribution of the thermal conductivity due to spins has been observed in the thermal conductivity along the spin chains. The thermal conductivity due to phonons, $κ_{\rm phonon}$, has been found to decrease by the application of a magnetic field, which has been explained as being due to the reduction in the spin gap originating from the spin-singlet dimers. Moreover, it has been found that $κ_{\rm phonon}$ increases with increasing field in high fields above ~7 T at low temperatures. This suggests the existence of a novel field-induced spin state and is discussed in terms of the possible spin-chirality ordering in a frustrated Mott insulator.

The space group at room temperature has been reported to be orthorhombic Pnma (No. 62). We infer that the space group above TN = 7.9 K is monoclinic P2_1/m (No. 11) from the observation of reflections forbidden in Pnma in x-ray powder diffraction experiments at room temperature. We determined the magnetic structure of Cu3Mo2O9 in neutron powder diffraction experiments. Magnetic moments on dimer sites lie in the ac planes. The magnitudes are 0.50 - 0.74 mu_B. Moments on chain sites may exist but the magnitudes are very small. The magnetic structure indicates that a partial disordered state is realized. We consider the origin of the magnetic structure, weak ferromagnetism, and electric polarization.

The asymmetry time spectra taken at RIKEN-RAL pulsed muon facility show a drastic change at $T_{\rm N}$. At low temperatures the weakly beating oscillation caused by the static internal magnetic fields in the antiferromagnetic phase was observed in Cu$_{3}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{9}$ and the lightly ($0.5\%$) Zn-doped sample. From the fitting of the oscillating term, we obtain the order parameter in these samples: ferromagnetic moment in two sublattices of antiferromagnet. In the heavily ($5.0\%$) Zn-doped sample, the muon-spin oscillation is rapidly damped. The frequency-domain spectrum of this sample suggests a formation of magnetic superstructure.

We measure the magnetoelectric current and the differential magnetization under the pulsed magnetic field up to 74 T. We also measure the electric polarization versus the electric field curve/loop under the static field up to 23 T. Dielectric properties change at the magnetic fields where the magnetization jumps are observed in the magnetization curve. Moreover, the magnetization plateaus are found at high magnetic fields.

We clarify that the antiferromagnetic order is formed together with ferroelectric properties at $T_{\rm N}=7.9$ K under zero magnetic field and obtain the magnetic-field-temperature phase diagram by measuring dielectric constant and spontaneous electric polarization. It is found that the antiferromagnetic phase possesses a spontaneous electric polarization parallel to the c axis when the magnetic field $H$ is applied parallel to the a axis. On the other hand, there are three different ferroelectric phases in the antiferromagnetic phase for $H$ parallel to the c axis.

We clarify that the antiferromagnetic order in the distorted tetrahedral quasi-one dimensional spin system induces electric polarizations. In this system, the effects of the low dimensionality and the magnetic frustration are expected to appear simultaneously. We obtain the magnetic-field-temperature phase diagram in Cu3Mo2O9 by studying the dielectric constant and the spontaneous electric polarization. Around the tricritical point at 10 T and 8 K, the change of the direction in the electric polarization causes a colossal magnetocapacitance. We calculate the charge redistribution in the small spin cluster consisting of two magnetic tetrahedra to demonstrate the electric polarization induced by the antiferromagnetism.

A precursor phenomenon of the phase V ($T<$ 68 K) structure in the phase IV temperatures was also identified as the coexistence of a slightly broadened (${1/4} {1/4} 2$) Bragg peak. We confirmed that intermediate phase IV is a stable, nontransient, single phase with $2\sqrt{3}a\times 2\sqrt{3}a\times c$ unit cells. A possible sequence of structural phase transitions was proposed.

Investigation of the magnetism of Cu$_3$Mo$_2$O$_9$ single crystal, which has antiferromagnetic (AF) linear chains interacting with AF dimers, reveals an AF second-order phase transition at $T_{\rm N} = 7.9$ K. Although weak ferromagnetic-like behavior appears at lower temperatures in low magnetic fields, complete remanent magnetization cannot be detected down to 0.5 K. However, a jump is observed in the magnetization below weak ferromagnetic (WF) phase transition at $T_{\rm c} \simeq 2.5$ K when a tiny magnetic field along the a axis is reversed, suggesting that the coercive force is very weak. A component of magnetic moment parallel to the chain forms AF long-range order (LRO) below $T_{\rm N}$, while a perpendicular component is disordered above $T_{\rm c}$ at zero magnetic field and forms WF-LRO below $T_{\rm c}$. Moreover, the WF-LRO is also realized with applying magnetic fields even between $T_{\rm c}$ and $T_{\rm N}$. These results are explainable by both magnetic frustration among symmetric exchange interactions and competition between symmetric and asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interactions.

We have investigated magnetic properties of Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ powder. Temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility and magnetic-field dependence of magnetization have shown that this cuprate is a model compound of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg system with ferromagnetic first-nearest-neighbor (1NN) and antiferromagnetic second-nearest-neighbor (2NN) competing interactions (competing system). Values of the 1NN and 2NN interactions are estimated as $J_1 = -138$ K and $J_2 = 51$ K ($α\equiv J_2 / J_1 = -0.37$). This value of $α$ suggests that the ground state is a spin-singlet incommensurate state. In spite of relatively large $J_1$ and $J_2$, no magnetic phase transition appears down to 2 K, while an antiferromagnetic transition occurs in other model compounds of the competing system with ferromagnetic 1NN interaction. For that reason, Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ is an ideal model compound to study properties of the incommensurate ground state that are unconfirmed experimentally.

At room temperature, we observe six A_1 and three A_2 phonon modes and a broad Raman band. Below T_{SP}several new peaks and a new broad band appear. The new peak at 62 cm^{-1} originates from the SP-gap excitation. The new peak at 128 cm^{-1} and the new broad band between 130 and 400 cm^{-1} come from two magnetic excitations. The new peaks at 102, 646 and 944 cm^{-1} are assigned to the folded phonon modes and their Na^+-ion deficiency dependence shows that the defect of Na^+ ion suppresses the SPtransition. The polarized Raman spectra below T_{SP} suggest that the possible crystal symmetry is C_s^2(Pn) or C_1^1(P1). The asymmetric lineshape of the 531-cm^{-1} peak superimposed on the electronic Raman band from the d-d transition around 600 cm^{-1} is interpreted in terms of the Fano resonance between the electronic continuous band and the phonon with a finite lifetime. The defects of the Na^+ ions reduce the Fano effect because the life time of the phonon and the phonon-continuum interaction are decreased.

We have measured temperature dependence of low-frequency Raman spectra in CuGeO$_3$, and have observed the quasi-elastic scattering in the $(c,c)$ polarization above the spin-Peierls transition temperature. We attribute it to the fluctuations of energy density in the spin system. The magnetic specific heat and an inverse of the magnetic correlation length can be derived from the quasi-elastic scattering. The inverse of the magnetic correlation length is proportional to $(T-T_{SP})^{1/2}$ at high temperatures. We compare the specific heat with a competing-$J$ model. This model cannot explain quantitatively both the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility with the same parameters. The origin of this discrepancy is discussed.
