Let $B$ and $C$ be square complex matrices. The differential equation \begin{equation*} x''(t)+Bx'(t)+Cx(t)=f(t) \end{equation*} is considered. A solvent is a matrix solution $X$ of the equation $X^2+BX+C=\mathbf0$. A pair of solvents $X$ and $Z$ is called complete if the matrix $X-Z$ is invertible. Knowing a complete pair of solvents $X$ and $Z$ allows us to reduce the solution of the initial value problem to the calculation of two matrix exponentials $e^{Xt}$ and $e^{Zt}$. The problem of finding a complete pair $X$ and $Z$, which leads to small rounding errors in solving the differential equation, is discussed.

The Spin Physics Detector collaboration proposes to install a universal detector in the second interaction point of the NICA collider under construction (JINR, Dubna) to study the spin structure of the proton and deuteron and other spin-related phenomena using a unique possibility to operate with polarized proton and deuteron beams at a collision energy up to 27 GeV and a luminosity up to $10^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. As the main goal, the experiment aims to provide access to the gluon TMD PDFs in the proton and deuteron, as well as the gluon transversity distribution and tensor PDFs in the deuteron, via the measurement of specific single and double spin asymmetries using different complementary probes such as charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. Other polarized and unpolarized physics is possible, especially at the first stage of NICA operation with reduced luminosity and collision energy of the proton and ion beams. This document is dedicated exclusively to technical issues of the SPD setup construction.

Abstract:
The Laguerre functions $l_{n,τ}^α$, $n=0,1,\dots$, are constructed from generalized Laguerre polynomials. The functions $l_{n,τ}^α$ depend on two parameters: scale $τ>0$ and order of generalization $α>-1$, and form an orthogonal basis in $L_2[0,\infty)$. Let the spectrum of a square matrix $A$ lie in the open left half-plane. Then the matrix exponential $H_A(t)=e^{At}$, $t>0$, belongs to $L_2[0,\infty)$. Hence the matrix exponential $H_A$ can be expanded in a series $H_A=\sum_{n=0}^\infty S_{n,τ,α,A}\,l_{n,τ}^α$. An estimate of the norm $\Bigl\lVert H_A-\sum_{n=0}^N S_{n,τ,α,A}\,l_{n,τ}^α\Bigr\rVert_{L_2[0,\infty)}$ is proposed. Finding the minimum of this estimate over $τ$ and $α$ is discussed. Numerical examples show that the optimal $α$ is often almost 0, which essentially simplifies the problem.

The data reveal a peak in the energy dependence of the forward $\{pp\}_s$ differential cross section at the energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.65 GeV with the width $Γ$ = 0.26 GeV, and also the cross section slope changes its sign in the region of the observed peak. Under these assumptions estimates of the kind $$ \bigl\Vert f(A)-r(A)\bigr\Vert\le \max_{t\in[0,1];μ\in\text{convex hull}\{z_1,z_{2},\dots,z_{N}\}}\biggl\VertΩ(A)[v(A)]^{-1} \frac{\bigl(vf\bigr)^{(N)} \bigl((1-t)μ\mathbf1+tA\bigr)}{N!}\biggr\Vert, $$ where $Ω(z)=\prod_{k=1}^N(z-z_k)$, are proposed. As an example illustrating the accuracy of such estimates, an approximation of the impulse response of a dynamic system obtained using the reduced-order Arnoldi method is considered, the actual accuracy of the approximation is compared with the estimate based on this paper.

To avoid calculations using the differences $t_{ii}-t_{jj}$ with close (including equal) $t_{ii}$ and $t_{jj}$, it is proposed to represent $T$ in a block form and calculate the two main block diagonals using interpolating polynomials. The rest of the $f(T)$ entries can be calculated using the Parlett recurrence algorithm. It is also proposed to perform scalar operations (such as the building of interpolating polynomials) with an enlarged number of decimal digits.

At the heart of the project there is huge experience with polarized beams at JINR.
The main objective of the proposed experiment is the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon. Spin measurements at the Spin Physics Detector at the NICA collider have bright perspectives to make a unique contribution and challenge our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon. It is established that if $T$ is locally nuclear and the operator $\mathbf1+T$ is invertible, then the inverse operator $(\mathbf1+T)^{-1}$ has the form $\mathbf1+T_1$, where $T_1$ is also locally nuclear. This result is refined for the case of operators acting in $L_p(\mathbb R^c,\mathbb C)$.

The most significant anthropogenic source As enrichment in the record, starting in 1975 C.E., is linked to increased copper production in Chile and at least partially to coal combustion from throughout the Southern Hemisphere. East and West Antarctic ice core delivered deposition differences are a result of differences in the atmospheric circulation patterns that transport As to these regions.

The proton-deuteron pairs emerging with high momenta, 0.6-1.8 GeV/$c$, were detected at small angles with respect to the proton beam. Distribution over the reaction missing mass $M_x$ reveals a local enhancement near the threshold of the pion pair production specific for the so-called ABC effect. The enhancement has a structure of a narrow bump placed above a smooth continuum. The invariant mass of the $dππ$ system in this enhancement region exhibits a resonance-like peak at $M_{dππ} \approx 2.36$ GeV/$c^2$ with the width $Γ\approx 0.10$ GeV/$c^2$. A possible interpretation of these features is discussed.

Values of the proton analysing power in the $pd\to{}^{3}\textrm{He}\,π^0/^{3}\textrm{H}\,π^+$ reactions at 350-360~MeV per nucleon were obtained by using a polarised proton beam incident on a deuterium cluster-jet target and with a polarised deuteron beam incident on a target cell filled with polarised hydrogen. These results have a much larger angular coverage than existing data. First measurements are also presented of the deuteron vector analysing power and the deuteron-proton spin correlations. Data were also obtained on the deuteron-proton spin correlation and proton analysing power at small angles at 600~MeV per nucleon, though the angular coverage at this energy was much more restricted even when using a deuteron beam. By combining the extrapolated values of the spin correlations to the forward or backward directions with published measurements of the deuteron tensor analysing powers, the relative phases between the two non-vanishing amplitudes were evaluated.

Several applications are considered: a representation of the impulse response of a second order linear differential equation with operator coefficients, a representation of the solution of the Sylvester equation, and an exploration of properties of the differential of the ordinary functional calculus.

The charge exchange of vector polarised deuterons on a polarised hydrogen target has been studied in a high statistics experiment at the COSY-ANKE facility at a deuteron beam energy of Td = 726 MeV. By selecting two fast protons at low relative energy E_{pp}, the measured analysing powers and spin correlations are sensitive to interference terms between specific neutron-proton charge-exchange amplitudes at a neutron kinetic energy of Tn ~ 1/2 Td =363 MeV. An impulse approximation calculation, which takes into account corrections due to the angular distribution in the diproton, describes reasonably the dependence of the data on both E_{pp} and the momentum transfer. This lends broad support to the current neutron-proton partial-wave solution that was used in the estimation.

The algorithm is intended for the case where $A$ has some close eigenvalues, and clusters (subsets) of close eigenvalues are separated from each other. This algorithm is a modification of some well known and widely used algorithms. A novel feature is an approximate calculation of divided differences for the Newton interpolating polynomial in a special way. This modification does not require to reorder the Schur triangular form and to solve Sylvester equations.

Here {pp}_s denotes a proton-proton pair with low excitation energy, which is dominantly in the 1S0 state. By measuring three protons in the final state it was possible to extract events where there was a spectator proton p_spec so that the reaction could be interpreted in terms of quasi-free pol{n} pol{p} -> {pp}_s pi-. The proton analyzing power in this reaction was also deduced from this data set by averaging over the polarization of the deuteron beam. The values of A_y^p were shown to be consistent with a refined analysis of our earlier results obtained with a polarized proton incident on a deuterium target. Taking these data in combination with our earlier measurements of the differential cross sections and analyzing powers in the pol{p} p -> {pp}_s pi^0 reaction, a more robust partial wave decomposition was achieved. Three different acceptable solutions were found and the only way of resolving this ambiguity without further theoretical input would be through a measurement of the mixed spin-correlation parameter A_{x,z}.

The spectator proton p_sp was either measured directly in silicon tracking telescopes or reconstructed using the momentum of a detected pi^-. Both observables can be described in terms of s-, p-, and d-wave pion production amplitudes. Taken together with the analogous data on the pol{p}p -> {pp}_s pi^0 reaction, full partial wave decompositions of both processes were carried out.

In order to establish links between p-wave pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions and low energy three-nucleon scattering, an extensive programme of experiments on pion production is currently underway at COSY-ANKE. The final proton pair is detected at very low excitation energy, leading to an S-wave diproton, denoted here as {pp}_s. We now report on measurements of the differential cross section and analysing power of the pol{p}p->{pp}_s pi^0$ reaction at 353 MeV. Both observables can be described in terms of s- and d-wave pion production and, by using the phase information from elastic pp scattering, unique solutions can be obtained for the corresponding amplitudes. This information is vital for the partial wave decomposition of the corresponding pn->{pp}_s pi^- reaction and hence for the extraction of the p-wave terms.

Comparison with deuteron photodisintegration shows that the cross section for diproton production is up to two orders of magnitude smaller, due largely to differences in the selection rules.

We propose to use an internal polarized hydrogen storage cell gas target in the AD ring to determine for the first time the two total spin-dependent pbar-p cross sections sigma_1 and sigma_2 at antiproton beam energies in the range from 50 to 450 MeV. The data obtained are of interest by themselves for the general theory of pbar-p interactions since they will provide a first experimental constraint of the spin-spin dependence of the nucleon-antinucleon potential in the energy range of interest. In addition, measurements of the polarization buildup of stored antiprotons are required to define the optimum parameters of a future, dedicated Antiproton Polarizer Ring (APR), intended to feed a double-polarized asymmetric pbar-p collider with polarized antiprotons. Such a machine has recently been proposed by the PAX collaboration for the new Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany. The availability of an intense stored beam of polarized antiprotons will provide access to a wealth of single- and double-spin observables, thereby opening a new window on QCD spin physics.

At the three higher energies the missing mass Mx spectra show a strong enhancement at low Mx, corresponding to an ABC effect that moves steadily to larger values as the energy is increased. Despite the missing-mass structure looking very different at 0.8 GeV, the variation with Mx and beam energy are consistent with two-pion production being mediated through the excitation of two Delta(1232) isobars, coupled to S-- and D-- states of the initial pp system.

The ratio of the measured cross sections to those of np->dγis on the 10^{-3}-10^{-2} level. The increase of the pp->{pp}_sγcross section with T_p might reflect the influence of the Delta(1232) excitation.

In the measured region of theta_{pp}^{cm} < 18 deg, the data reveal a forward dip for T_p =< 1.4 GeV whereas a forward peaking is seen at 1.97 GeV. The energy dependence of the forward cross section shows a broad peak in the 0.6-0.8 GeV region, probably associated with Delta(1232) excitation, and a minimum at 1.4 GeV. Some of these features are similar to those observed for the spin-isospin partner reaction, pp -> d pi+. However, the ratio of the forward differential cross sections of the two reactions shows a significant suppression of single pion production associated with a spin--singlet final nucleon pair.

The pp -> pp pi0 differential cross section has been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Juelich for pion cms angles between 0 and 15.4 degrees at a proton beam energy of 0.8 GeV. The selection of diproton pairs with an excitation energy E_{pp} < 3 MeV ensures that the final pp system is dominantly in the spin-singlet 1S0 state. The kinematics are therefore very similar to those of pp -> d pi+ but with different spin and isospin transitions. The results will thus provide a crucial extra test of pion production models in nucleon-nucleon collisions.
The cross sections, which are over two orders of magnitude smaller than those of pp -> d pi+, show a forward dip, even stronger than that seen at lower energies. This behaviour is well reproduced in a theoretical model that includes P-wave Delta-N states.

The kinematically complete experiment made use of the ANKE spectrometer at the internal beam of COSY and a deuterium cluster--jet target. For the first time the $S$--wave dominance in the fast diproton is experimentally demonstrated in this reaction. While at $T_p=0.8$ GeV the measured analyzing power $A_y$ vanishes, it reaches almost unity at $T_p=0.5$ GeV for neutrons scattered at $θ_n^{c.m.}=167^\circ$. The results are compared with a model taking into account one--nucleon exchange, single scattering and $Δ$ (1232) excitation in the intermediate state. The model describes fairly well the unpolarized cross section obtained earlier by us and the analyzing power at 0.8 GeV, it fails to reproduce the angular dependence of $A_y$ at 0.5 GeV.

The differential cross section of the breakup reaction, averaged up to $8^{\circ}$ over the cm polar angle of the total momentum of the $pp$ pairs, has been obtained. Since the kinematics of this process is quite similar to that of backward elastic $pd \to dp$ scattering, the results are compared to calculations based on a theoretical model previously applied to the $pd \to dp$ process.

Abstract:
The near-forward cross section for the pp -> pn pi^+ reaction has been measured at 492 MeV by using the large acceptance ANKE magnetic spectrometer placed at an internal target position of the storage ring COSY-Juelich. Protons and pions emitted near zero degrees were detected in coincidence, and those with theta_pi <= 2 degrees and theta_p <= 2.5degrees were subjected to detailed analysis. Unde…

Under these conditions, the excitation energy in the np system was below 3 MeV over the measured momentum range. This is the region of the np final-state-interaction peak, which was measured with a resolution of a fraction of an MeV. The shape of the peak allows one to conclude that the fraction of final spin-singlet np pairs is below about 10%. By using the results of scattering theory, this limit is confirmed through a comparison with the cross section for pp -> d pi^+. The smallness of the singlet contribution is consistent with trends seen in lower energy data.
