Antiferromagnetic PbMnTeO6, also known as mineral kuranakhite, has been reported recently to have all three cations in trigonal prismatic coordination, which is extremely unusual for both Mn(4+) and Te(6+). In this work, the phase was reproduced with the same lattice parameters and Néel temperature TN = 20 K. However, powder neutron diffraction unambiguously determined octahedral (trigonal antiprismatic) coordination for all cations within the chiral space group P312. The same symmetry was proposed for SrMnTeO6 and PbGeTeO6, instead of the reported space groups P-62m and P31m, respectively. PbMnTeO6 was found to be a robust antiferromagnet with an assumingly substantial scale of exchange interactions since the Neel temperature did not show any changes in external magnetic fields up to 7 T. The determined effective magnetic moment meff = 3.78 mB was in excellent agreement with the numerical estimation using the effective g-factor g = 1.95 directly measured here by electron spin resonance (ESR). Both specific heat and ESR data indicated the two-dimensional character of magnetism in the compound under study. The combination of chirality with magnetic order makes PbMnTeO6 a promising material with possible multiferroic properties.

Li3Co2SbO6 is prepared by molten salt ion exchange and its structure refined by the Rietveld method confirming the honeycomb-type Co/Sb ordering of its Na precursor. Monoclinic rather than trigonal symmetry of Na3Co2SbO6 is directly demonstrated for the first time by peak splitting in the high-resolution synchrotron XRD pattern. The long-range antiferromagnetic order is established at TN about 6.7 K and 9.9 K in Na3Co2SbO6 and Li3Co2SbO6, respectively, confirmed by both the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. Spin-wave analysis of specific heat data indicates the presence of 3D AFM magnons in Na3Co2SbO6 and 2D AFM magnons in Li3Co2SbO6. The field dependence of the magnetization almost reaches saturation in moderate magnetic fields up to 9 T and demonstrates characteristic features of magnetic field induced spin-reorientation transitions for both A3Co2SbO6 (A = Na, Li). Overall thermodynamic studies show that the magnetic properties of both compounds are very sensitive to an external magnetic field, thus predicting a non-trivial ground state with a rich magnetic phase diagram. The ground state spin configuration of Li3Co2SbO6 has been determined by low-temperature neutron powder diffraction. It represents a ferromagnetic arrangement of moments in the honeycomb layers with antiferromagnetic coupling between adjacent layers.

The manganese tellurate Li2MnTeO6 consists of trigonal spin lattices made up of Mn4+ (d3, S = 3/2) ions. The magnetic properties of this compound were characterized by several experimental techniques, which include magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, dielectric permittivity, electron spin resonance (ESR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) measurements, and by density functional calculations (DFT). The magnetic susceptibility chi(T) demonstrates very unusual behavior. It isdescribed by the Curie-Weiss law at high temperature with Curie-Weiss temperature of Theta = -74 K, exhibits no obvious anomaly indicative of a long-range magnetic ordering at low magnetic fields. At high magnetic fields, however, the character of chi(T) changes showing a maximum at about 9 K. That this maximum of chi(T) reflects the onset of an antiferromagnetic order was confirmed by specific heat measurements, which exhibit a clear lambda-type anomaly at TN around 8.5 K even at zero magnetic field, and by 7Li NMR and dielectric permittivity measurements. The magnetic structure of Li2MnTeO6, determined by neutron powder diffraction measurements at 1.6 K, is described by the 120-degree non-collinear spin structure with the propagation vector k = (1/3, 1/3, 0). Consistent with this finding, the spin exchange interactions evaluated for Li2MnTeO6 by density functional calculations are dominated by the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange within each triangular spin lattice. This spin lattice is strongly spin frustrated with f = |Theta|/TN around 8 and exhibits a two-dimensional magnetic character in a broad temperature range above TN.

Two porous carbon-based samples doped with Au and Co are investigated. The neutron diffraction study reveals an amorphous structure of both samples. The Co-doped sample exhibits a long-range ferromagnetic (FM) ordering at 2.6 K. The NMR investigations demonstrate, that the samples are obtained with a partial carbonization of initial aromatic compounds and do not reach a state of glassy carbon. The magnetization, longitudinal nonlinear response to a weak ac field and electron magnetic resonance data give evidences for presence of FM clusters in the samples well above 300 K. A short-range character of the FM ordering in the Au-doped sample transforms below T$_C \approx$ 210 K into another inhomogeneous FM state. Besides the FM clusters, this state contains a subsystem with a long-range FM ordering (matrix) formed by paramagnetic centers, existing outside the clusters. The nonlinear response data suggest a percolative character of the long-range FM matrix, which is connected probably with a porous sample structure. The magnetization data give evidence for the formation of an inhomogeneous state in the Co-doped sample, similar to that in the Au-doped one. However, this state is formed at higher temperatures, lying well above 350 K, and exhibits a more homogeneous arrangement of the FM nanoparticles and the FM matrix. Temperature dependence of the magnetization in the Au-doped sample is attributable to changes of the domain formation regime in the FM matrix on cooling, connected with the inhomogeneous character of its FM state. Such peculiarity is absent in the Co-doped sample below 350 K, which is in agreement with formation of the FM state in this sample at much higher temperatures. Further cooling below T ~ 3(10) K leads to a steep increase of the magnetization in both samples. This is attributable to the domain rearrangement in the inhomogeneous FM state at low temperatures.

The NaNO$_{2}$ nanocomposite ferroelectric material in porous glass was studied by neutron diffraction. For the first time the details of the crystal structure including positions and anisotropic thermal parameters were determined for the solid material, embedded in a porous matrix, in ferro- and paraelectric phases. It is demonstrated that in the ferroelectric phase the structure is consistent with bulk data but above transition temperature the giant growth of amplitudes of thermal vibrations is observed, resulting in the formation of a "premelted state". Such a conclusion is in a good agreement with the results of dielectric measurements published earlier.
