Maximal Mumford Curves from Planar Graphs
Abstract: A curve of genus g is maximal Mumford (MM) if it has g+1 ovals and g tropical cycles. We construct full-dimensional families of MM curves in the Hilbert scheme of canonical curves. This rests on first-order deformations of graph curves whose graph is planar.

Three results related to the half-plane property of matroids
Abstract: We settle three problems from the literature on stable and real zero polynomials and their connection to matroid theory. We disprove the weak real zero amalgamation conjecture by Schweighofer and the second author. We disprove a conjecture by Brändén and D'León by finding a relaxation of a matroid with the weak half-plane property that does not have the weak half-plane property itself. Finally, we… ▽ More

Secant varieties of curves, Ulrich bundles and the arithmetic writhe
Abstract: We establish a connection between the theory of Ulrich sheaves and $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory. For instance, we prove that the $\mathbb{A}^1$-degree of a morphism between projective varieties, that is relatively oriented by an Ulrich sheaf, is constant on the target even when it is not $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected. Some thoughts and experiments on Bergman's compact amalgamation problem
Abstract: We study the question whether copies of $S^1$ in $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ can be amalgamated in a compact group. This is the simplest instance of a fundamental open problem in the theory of compact groups raised by George Bergman in 1987. Considerable computational experiments suggest that the answer is positive in this case. We obtain a positive answer for a relaxed problem using theoretical consideratio… ▽ More

Kolmogorov complexity and instance complexity of recursively enumerable sets
Abstract: We study in which way Kolmogorov complexity and instance complexity affect properties of r.e. sets. We show that the well-known 2log n upper bound on the Kolmogorov complexity of initial segments of r.e.\ sets is optimal and characterize the T-degrees of r.e. sets which attain this bound. The main part of the paper is concerned with instance complexity of r.e. sets. We construct a nonrecursive r… ▽ More
