Anti-Instability of Complex Ghost
Abstract: We argue that Lee-Wick's complex ghost appearing in any higher derivative theory is stable and its asymptotic field exists. It may be more appropriate to call it ``anti-unstable" in the sense that, the more the ghost `decays' into lighter ordinary particles, the larger the probability the ghost remains as itself becomes. This is explicitly shown by analyzing the two-point functions of the ghost He… ▽ More

Unitarity Violation in Field Theories of Lee-Wick's Complex Ghost
Abstract: Theories with fourth-order derivatives, including the Lee-Wick finite QED model and Quadratic Gravity, have a better UV behaviour, but the presence of negative metric ghost modes endanger unitarity. Noticing that the ghost acquires a complex mass by radiative corrections, Lee and Wick, in particular, claimed that such complex ghosts would never be created by collisions of physical particles becaus… ▽ More

Covariant BRST Quantization of Unimodular Gravity II -- Formulation with a vector antighost --
Abstract: In our previous paper, we have presented a covariant BRST quantization of unimodular gravity which may account for the smallness of the cosmological constant, and have shown that the physical degrees of freedom in the theory are the same as general relativity. The formulation has been given by using rank-2 antisymmetric tensor fields for both ghosts and antighosts. Here we give an alternative form… ▽ More

Covariant BRST Quantization of Unimodular Gravity I -- Formulation with antisymmetric tensor ghosts --
Abstract: Unimodular gravity (UG) is an interesting theory that may explain why the cosmological constant is extremely small, in contrast to general relativity (GR). The theory has only the transverse diffeomorphism invariance and this causes lots of debate as to the equivalence of UG to GR in the covariant quantization. We study the covariant BRST quantization of UG by gauge fixing only the transverse diff… ▽ More

BRST Quantization of General Relativity in Unimodular Gauge and Unimodular Gravity
Abstract: Unimodular gravity (UG) is an important theory which may explain the smallness of the cosmological constant. To get insight into the covariant quantization of UG, we discuss the BRST quantization of General Relativity (GR) with a cosmological constant in the unimodular gauge. We develop a novel way to gauge fix the transverse diffeomorphism (TDiff) and then further to fulfill the unimodular gauge.… ▽ More

Necessity and Insufficiency of Scale Invariance for solving Cosmological Constant Problem
Abstract: A scenario based on the scale invariance for explaining the vanishing cosmological constant (CC) is discussed. Abstract: It is recently shown that in 4D $SU(N)$ Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type models, the $SU(N)$ symmetry breaking into its special subgroups is not special but much more common than that into the regular subgroups, where the fermions belong to complex representations of $SU(N)$. Using the BRST formalism and Stückelberg fields, we first clarify how the Boulware-Deser ghost decouples in the massive gravity theory with Fierz-Pauli mass term. Here we find that the crucial point in the proof is that there is no higher (time) derivative for the Stückelberg `scalar' field. We then analyze the nonlinear… ▽ More

Neutrino Mass Texture with Large Mixing
Abstract: We propose a simple texture for the right-handed Majorana mass matrix to give a large $ν_μ-ν_τ$ mixing angle and hierarchical left-handed neutrino mass pattern. Consistently with the Dirac mass texture of the quark sector realizing the CKM mixing, this naturally explains the recent experimental results on both the atmospheric neutrino anomaly observed by the Superkamiokande collaboration and the… ▽ More

The Universal Renormalization Factors Z_1/Z_3 and Color Confinement Condition in Non-Abelian Gauge Theory
Abstract: The ratio Z_1/Z_3 of vertex and wave-function renormalization factors, which is universal (i.e., matter-independent), is shown to equal 1+u which gives the residue of the scalar pole $\propto p_μp_ν/p^2$ of 2-point function < D_μc D_ν\bar c >. This relation is interesting since 1+u=0 has been known to give a sufficient condition for color confinement. We also give an argument that, when 1+u=0 ho… ▽ More

Nontriviality of Gauge-Higgs-Yukawa System and Renormalizability of Gauged NJL Model
Abstract: In the leading order of a modified 1/Nc expansion, we show that a class of gauge-Higgs-Yukawa systems in four dimensions give non-trivial and well-defined theories in the continuum limit. The renormalized Yukawa coupling y and the quartic scalar coupling λhave to lie on a certain line in the (y,λ) plane and the line terminates at an upper bound. The gauged Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in the… ▽ More

Defining the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model by Higher Derivative Kinetic Term
Abstract: Usual treatment of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model using loop momentum cutoff suffers from ambiguities in choosing the loop momenta to be cut off and violation of (external) gauge invariance. We define the NJL model from the starting Lagrangian level by using a higher derivative fermion kinetic term with a cutoff parameter $Λ$. This definition is free from such ambiguities and manifestly kee… ▽ More

Dynamical Symmetry Breaking in an E_6 GUT Model
Abstract: Dynamical symmetry breaking is studied in an E_6 GUT model of a single generation of fermions with strong 4-fermi interactions. The effective potential is analyzed analytically by the help of Michel's conjecture and the result is confirmed numerically. We find that the E_6 symmetry is spontaneously broken either to F_4 or to Sp(8) or G_2 or SU(3), depending on which of the 4-fermi coupling const… ▽ More

External Gauge Invariance and Anomaly in BS Vertices and Boundstates
Abstract: A systematic method is given for obtaining consistent approximations to the Schwinger-Dyson(SD) and Bethe-Salpeter(BS) equations which maintain the external gauge invariance. We show that for any order of approximation to the SD equation there is a corresponding approximation to the BS equations such that the solutions to those equations satisfy the Ward-Takahashi identities of the external gaug… ▽ More

Isgur-Wise Function from Bethe-Salpeter Amplitude
Abstract: We develop the improved ladder approximation to QCD in order to apply it to the heavy quark mesons. The resulting Bethe-Salpeter equation is expanded in powers of the inverse heavy quark mass 1/M, and is shown to be consistent with the heavy quark spin symmetry. We calculate numerically the universal leading order BS amplitude for heavy pseudoscalar and vector mesons, and use this to evaluate th… ▽ More

Low Energy Theorems of Hidden Local Symmetries
Abstract: We prove to all orders of the loop expansion the low energy theorems of hidden local symmetries in four-dimensional nonlinear sigma models based on the coset space $G/H$, with $G$ and $H$ being arbitrary compact groups. Although the models are non-renormalizable, the proof is done in an analogous manner to the renormalization proof of gauge theories and two-dimensional nonlinear sigma models by… ▽ More

Improving the Effective Potential:Multi-Mass-Scale Case
Abstract: Previously proposed procedure for improving the effective potential by using renormalization group equation (RGE) is generalized so as to be applicable to any system containing several different mass scales. If one knows L-loop effective potential and (L+1)-loop RGE coefficient functions, this procedure gives an improved potential which satisfies the RGE and contains all of the leading, next-to-… ▽ More

Improving the Effective Potential
Abstract: A general procedure is presented how to improve the effective potential by using the renormalization group equation (RGE) in MS bar scheme. If one knows the L-loop effective potential and the RGE coefficient functions up to (L+1)-loop level, this procedure gives an improved potential which satisfies the RGE and contains all of the leading, next-to-leading,... , and L-th-to-leading log terms.
