In the paper we deal with ballistic heat transport in a graphene lattice subjected to a point heat source. It is assumed that a graphene sheet is suspended under tension in a viscous gas. We use the model of a harmonic polyatomic (more exactly diatomic) lattice performing out-of-plane motions. The dynamics of the lattice is described by an infinite system of stochastic ordinary differential equations with white noise in the right-hand side, which models the point heat source. On the base of the previous analytical unsteady analysis an analytical formula in continuum approximation is suggested, which allows one to describe a steady-state kinetic temperature distribution in the graphene lattice in continuum approximation. The obtained solution is in a good agreement with numerical results obtained for the discrete system everywhere excepting a neighbourhood of six singular rays with the origin at the heat source location. The continuum solution becomes singular at these rays, unlike the discrete one, which appears to be localized in a certain sense along the rays. The factors, which cause such a directional localization and the mismatch between the continuum and discrete solutions are discussed. We expect that the suggested formula is applicable for various damped polyatomic lattices where all particles have equal masses in the case of universal for all particles external viscosity.

This study considers modern surgical navigation systems based on augmented reality technologies. Augmented reality glasses are used to construct holograms of the patient's organs from MRI and CT data, subsequently transmitted to the glasses. This, in addition to seeing the actual patient, the surgeon gains visualization inside the patient's body (bones, soft tissues, blood vessels, etc.). The solutions developed at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University allow reducing the invasiveness of the procedure and preserving healthy tissues. This also improves the navigation process, making it easier to estimate the location and size of the tumor to be removed. We describe the application of developed systems to different types of surgical operations (removal of a malignant brain tumor, removal of a cyst of the cervical spine). We consider the specifics of novel navigation systems designed for anesthesia, for endoscopic operations. Furthermore, we discuss the construction of novel visualization systems for ultrasound machines. Our findings indicate that the technologies proposed show potential for telemedicine.

The equilibration of sinusoidally modulated distribution of the kinetic temperature is analyzed in the $β$-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chain with different degrees of nonlinearity and for different wavelengths of temperature modulation. Two different types of initial conditions are used to show that either one gives the same result as the number of realizations increases and that the initial conditions that are closer to the state of thermal equilibrium give faster convergence. The kinetics of temperature equilibration is monitored and compared to the analytical solution available for the linear chain in the continuum limit. The transition from ballistic to diffusive thermal conductivity with an increase in the degree of anharmonicity is shown. In the ballistic case, the energy equilibration has an oscillatory character with an amplitude decreasing in time, and in the diffusive case, it is monotonous in time. For smaller wavelength of temperature modulation, the oscillatory character of temperature equilibration remains for a larger degree of anharmonicity. For a given wavelength of temperature modulation, there is such a value of the anharmonicity parameter at which the temperature equilibration occurs most rapidly.

We study conversion of thermal energy to mechanical energy and vice versa in $α$-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou~(FPUT) chain with spatially sinusoidal profile of initial temperature. We show analytically that coupling between macroscopic dynamics and quasiballistic heat transport gives rise to mechanical vibrations with growing amplitude. This new phenomenon is referred to as "ballistic resonance". At large times, these mechanical vibrations decay monotonically, and therefore the well-known FPUT recurrence paradox occurring at zero temperature is eliminated at finite temperatures.

An adiabatic transition between two equilibrium states corresponding to different stiffnesses in an infinite chain of particles is studied. Initially, the chain particles have random displacements and random velocities corresponding to a uniform initial temperature. An instant change of parameters of chain initiates a transient process. Analytical expressions for the chain temperature as a function of time are obtained from the statistical analysis of the dynamics equations. It is shown that the transition process is oscillatory and it converges non-monotonically to a new equilibrium state. Such behavior is usually unexpected for thermal processes. The analytical results are supplemented by numerical simulations.

The effect of discrete breathers (DBs) on macroscopic properties of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain with symmetric and asymmetric potentials is investigated. The total to kinetic energy ratio (related to specific heat), stress (related to thermal expansion), and Young's modulus are monitored during the development of modulational instability of the zone boundary mode. The instability results in the formation of chaotic DBs followed by the transition to thermal equilibrium when DBs disappear due to energy radiation in the form of small-amplitude phonons. It is found that DBs reduce the specific heat for all the considered chain parameters. They increase the thermal expansion when the potential is asymmetric and, as expected, thermal expansion is not observed in the case of symmetric potential. The Young's modulus in the presence of DBs is smaller than in thermal equilibrium for the symmetric potential and for the potential with a small asymmetry, but it is larger than in thermal equilibrium for the potential with greater asymmetry. Our results can be useful for setting experiments on the identification of DBs in crystals by measuring their macroscopic properties.

The features for the unsteady process of thermal equilibration ("the fast motions") in a one-dimensional harmonic crystal lying in a viscous environment (e.g., a gas) are under investigation. It is assumed that initially the displacements of all the particles are zero and the particle velocities are random quantities with zero mean and a constant variance, thus, the system is far away from the thermal equilibrium. It is known that in the framework of the corresponding conservative problem the kinetic and potential energies oscillate and approach the equilibrium value that equals a half of the initial value of the kinetic energy. We show that the presence of the external dam** qualitatively changes the features of this process. The unsteady process generally has two stages. At the first stage oscillations of kinetic and potential energies with decreasing amplitude, subjected to exponential decay, can be observed (this stage exists only in the underdamped case). At the second stage (which always exists), the oscillations vanish, and the energies are subjected to a power decay. The large-time asymptotics for the energy is proportional to $t^{-3/2}$ in the case of the potential energy and to $t^{-5/2}$ in the case the kinetic energy. Hence, at large values of time the total energy of the crystal is mostly the potential energy. The obtained analytic results are verified by independent numerical calculations.

We consider heat transfer in an infinite two-dimensional square harmonic scalar lattice lying in a viscous environment and subjected to a heat source. The basic equations for the particles of the lattice are stated in the form of a system of stochastic ordinary differential equations. We perform a continualization procedure and derive an infinite system of linear partial differential equations for covariance variables. The most important results of the paper are the deterministic differential-difference equation describing non-stationary heat propagation in the lattice and the analytical formula in the integral form for its steady-state solution describing kinetic temperature distribution caused by a point heat source of a constant intensity. The comparison between numerical solution of stochastic equations and obtained analytical solution demonstrates a very good agreement everywhere except for the main diagonals of the lattice (with respect to the point source position), where the analytical solution is singular.

This work presents the thermodynamical analysis of the ballistic heat equation from the viewpoint of two approaches: Classical Irreversible Thermodynamics (CIT) and Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics (EIT). A formula for calculation of the entropy within the framework of EIT for the ballistic heat equation is derived in this work. Entropy is calculated for a sinusoidal initial temperature perturbation by using both approaches. The results obtained from CIT show that the entropy is a non-monotonic function and the entropy production can be negative. The results obtained with EIT show that the entropy is a monotonic function and the entropy production is nonnegative. An approximative formula for the asymptotic behavior of the entropy for the ballistic heat equation is obtained. A comparison with the ordinary Fourier-based heat equation and hyperbolic heat equation is made. A crucial difference in asymptotic behaviour of the entropy for ballistic and classical heat conduction equation is shown. It is shown that mathematical time reversibility of partial differential ballistic heat equation is not consistent with its physical irreversibility. The processes described by the ballistic heat equation are irreversible because of the entropy increase.

An instant homogeneous thermal perturbation in the finite harmonic one-dimensional crystal is studied. Previously it was shown that for the same problem in the infinite crystal the kinetic temperature oscillates with decreasing amplitude described by the Bessel function of the first kind. In the present paper it is shown that in the finite crystal this behavior is observed only until a certain period of time when a sharp increase of the oscillations amplitude is realized. This phenomenon, further refereed to as the thermal echo, is realized periodically, with the period proportional to the crystal size. The amplitude for each subsequent echo is lower than for the previous one. It is obtained analytically that the time-dependance of the kinetic temperature can be described by an infinite sum of the Bessel functions with multiple indexes. It is also shown that the thermal echo in the thermodynamic limit is described by the Airy function.

One-dimensional chain of pointwise particles harmonically coupled with nearest neighbors and placed in six-order polynomial on-site potentials is considered. Power of the energy source in the form of single ac driven particles is calculated numerically for different amplitudes $A$ and frequencies $ω$ within the linear phonon band. The results for the on-site potentials with hard and soft nonlinearity types are compared. For the hard-type nonlinearity, it is shown that when the driving frequency is close to (far from) the {\em upper} edge of the phonon band, the power of the energy source normalized to $A^2$ increases (decreases) with increasing $A$. In contrast, for the soft-type nonlinearity, the normalized power of the energy source increases (decreases) with increasing $A$ when the driving frequency is close to (far from) the {\em lower} edge of the phonon band. Our further demonstrations indicate that, in the case of hard (soft) anharmonicity, the chain can support movable discrete breathers (DBs) with frequencies above (below) the phonon band. It is the energy source quasi-periodically emitting moving DBs in the regime with driving frequency close to the DBs frequency, that induces the increase of the power. Therefore, our results here support the mechanism that the moving DBs can assist energy transfer from the ac driven particle to the chain.

An approach for analytical description of thermal processes in harmonic lattices is presented. We cover longitudinal and transverse vibrations of chains and out-of-plane vibrations of two-dimensional lattices with interactions of an arbitrary number of neighbors. Motion of each particle is governed by a single scalar equation and therefore the notion "scalar lattice" is used. Evolution of initial temperature field in an infinite lattice is investigated. An exact equation describing the evolution is derived. Continualization of this equation with respect to spatial coordinates is carried out. The resulting continuum equation is solved analytically. The solution shows that the kinetic temperature is represented as the sum of two terms, one describing short time behavior, the other large time behavior. At short times, the temperature performs high-frequency oscillations caused by redistribution of energy among kinetic and potential forms (fast process). Characteristic time of this process is of order of ten periods of atomic vibrations. At large times, changes of the temperature are caused by ballistic heat transfer (slow process). The temperature field is represented as a superposition of waves having the shape of initial temperature distribution and propagating with group velocities dependent on the wave vector. Expressions describing fast and slow processes are invariant with respect to substitution $t$ by $-t$. However examples considered in the paper demonstrate that these processes are irreversible. Numerical simulations show that presented theory describes the evolution of temperature field at short and large time scales with high accuracy.

We consider two high-frequency thermal processes in uniformly heated harmonic crystals relaxing towards equilibrium: (i) equilibration of kinetic and potential energies and (ii) redistribution of energy among spatial directions. Equation describing these processes with deterministic initial conditions is derived. Solution of the equation shows that characteristic time of these processes is of the order of ten periods of atomic vibrations. After that time the system practically reaches the stationary state. It is shown analytically that in harmonic crystals temperature tensor is not isotropic even in the stationary state. As an example, harmonic triangular lattice is considered. Simple formula relating the stationary value of the temperature tensor and initial conditions is derived. The function describing equilibration of kinetic and potential energies is obtained. It is shown that the difference between the energies (Lagrangian) oscillates around zero. Amplitude of these oscillations decays inversely proportional to time. Analytical results are in a good agreement with numerical simulations.

A model (further referred to as the enhanced vector-based model or EVM) for elastic bonds in solids, composed of bonded particles is presented. The model can be applied for a description of elastic deformation of rocks, ceramics, concrete, nanocomposites, aerogels and other materials with structural elements interacting via forces and torques. A material is represented as a set of particles (rigid bodies) connected by elastic bonds. Vectors rigidly connected with particles are used for description of particles orientations. Simple expression for potential energy of a bond is proposed. Corresponding forces and torques are calculated. Parameters of the potential are related to longitudinal, transverse (shear), bending, and torsional stiffnesses of the bond. It is shown that fitting parameters of the potential allows one to satisfy any values of stiffnesses. Therefore, the model is applicable to bonds with arbitrary length/thickness ratio. Bond stiffnesses are expressed in terms of geometrical and elastic properties of the bonds using three models: Bernoulli-Euler beam, Timoshenko beam, and short elastic cylinder. An approach for validation of numerical implementation of the model is presented. Validation is carried out by a comparison of numerical and analytical solutions of four test problems for a pair of bonded particles. Benchmark expressions for forces and torques in the case of pure tension/compression, shear, bending and torsion of a single bond are derived. This approach allows one to minimize the time required for a numerical implementation of the model.
