The magnetic vortex lattice (VL) of polycrystalline MgB2 has been investigated by transverse-field muon-spin-relaxation (TF-MuSR). The evolution of TF-MuSR depolarization rate, sigma, that is proportional to the second moment of the field distribution of the VL has been studied as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. The low temperature value s exhibits a pronounced peak near Hext = 75 mT. This behavior is characteristic of strong pinning induced distortions of the VL which put into question the interpretation of the low-field TF-MuSR data in terms of the magnetic penetration depth lambda(T). An approximately constant value of sigma, such as expected for an ideal VL in the London-limit, is observed at higher fields of Hext > 0.4 T. The TF-MuSR data at Hext = 0.6 T are analyzed in terms of a two-gap model. We obtain values for the gap size of D1 = 6.0 meV (2D1/kBTc = 3.6), D2 = 2.6 meV (2D2/kBTc = 1.6), a comparable spectral weight of the two bands and a zero temperature value for the magnetic penetration depth of lambda = 100 nm. In addition, we performed MuSR-measurements in zero external field (ZF-MuSR). We obtain evidence that the muon site (at low temperature) is located on a ring surrounding the center of the boron hexagon. Muon diffusion sets in already at rather low temperature of T > 10 K. The nuclear magnetic moments can account for the observed relaxation rate and no evidence for electronic magnetic moments has been obtained.

Grüneisen parameters of the harmonic mode frequencies are reported for the high-frequency zone-center $E_{2g}$ and $B_{1g}$ and the zone-boundary $E_{2u}$ and $B_{2u}$ modes at $A$. Anharmonic effects of phonon frequencies and the implications of the calculated phonon frequency shifts for the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature of MgB$_2$ are discussed. Also reported are Raman and optical reflectance spectra of MgB$_2$ measured at high pressures. The experimental observations in combination with calculated results indicate that broad spectral features we observed in the Raman spectra at frequencies between 500 and 900 cm$^{-1}$ cannot be attributed to first-order scattering by zone-center modes, but originate in part from a chemical species other than MgB$_2$ at the sample surface and in part from a maximum in the MgB$_2$ phonon density of states. Low-temperature Raman spectra taken at ambient pressure showed increased scattering intensity in the region below 300 cm$^{-1}$.

We first show that the ground state of an isolated colloid is naturally overcharged by simple electrostatic arguments illustrated by the Gillespie rule. We furthermore demonstrate that in the strong Coulomb coupling this mechanism leads to ionized states and thus to long range attractions between like-charged spheres. We use molecular dynamics simulations to study in detail the counterion distribution for one and two highly charged colloids for the ground state as well as for finite temperatures. We compare our results in terms of a simple version of a Wigner crystal theory and find excellent qualitative and quantitative agreement.

Instead of considering a central bare charge, as it is traditionally done, we distribute \textit{discrete} charges randomly on the sphere. We use molecular dynamics simulations to study this effect on various properties such as overcharging, counterion distribution and diffusion. In the vicinity of the colloid surface the electrostatic potential may considerably differ from the one obtained with a central charge. In the strong Coulomb coupling, we showed that the colloidal charge discretization qualitatively influences the counterion distribution and leads to a strong colloidal charge-counterion pair association. However, we found that \textit{charge inversion} still persists even if strong pair association is observed.

In this letter, we study the ground state of two spherical macroions of identical radius, but asymmetric bare charge ((Q_{A}>Q_{B})). Electroneutrality of the system is insured by the presence of the surrounding divalent counterions. Using Molecular Dynamics simulations within the framework of the primitive model, we show that the ground state of such a system consists of an overcharged and an undercharged colloid. For a given macroion separation the stability of these ionized-like states is a function of the difference ((\sqrt{N_{A}}-\sqrt{N_{B}})) of neutralizing counterions (N_{A}) and (N_{B}). Furthermore the degree of ionization, or equivalently, the degree of overcharging, is also governed by the distance separation of the macroions. The natural analogy with ionic bonding is briefly discussed.

We report a mechanism which can lead to long range attractions between like-charged spherical macroions, stemming from the existence of metastable ionized states. We show that the ground state of a single highly charged colloid plus a few excess counterions is overcharged. For the case of two highly charged macroions in their neutralizing divalent counterion solution we demonstrate that, in the regime of strong Coulomb coupling, the counterion clouds are very likely to be unevenly distributed, leading to one overcharged and one undercharged macroion. This long-living metastable configuration in turn leads to a long range Coulomb attraction.

The magnetic susceptibility chi and specific heat C versus temperature T of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic alternating-exchange (J1 and J2) Heisenberg chain are studied for the entire range 0 \leq alpha \leq 1 of the alternation parameter alpha = J2/J1. For the uniform chain (alpha = 1), detailed comparisons of the high-accuracy chi(T) and C(T) Bethe ansatz data of Kluemper and Johnston are made with the asymptotically exact low-T field theory predictions of Lukyanov. QMC simulations and TMRG calculations of chi(alpha,T) are presented. From the low-T TMRG data, the spin gap Delta(alpha)/J1 is extracted for 0.8 \leq alpha \leq 0.995. High accuracy fits to all of the above numerical data are obtained. We examine in detail the theoretical predictions of Bulaevskii for chi(alpha,T) and compare them with our results. Our experimental chi(T) and C(T) data for NaV2O5 single crystals are modeled in detail. The chi(T) data above the spin dimerization temperature Tc = 34 K are not in agreement with the prediction for the uniform Heisenberg chain, but can be explained if there is a moderate ferromagnetic interchain coupling and/or if J changes with T. By fitting the chi(T) data, we obtain Delta(T = 0) = 103(2) K, alternation parameter delta(0) = (1 - alpha)/(1 + alpha) = 0.034(6) and average exchange constant J(0) = 640(80) K. The delta(T) and Delta(T) are derived from the data. A spin pseudogap with a large magnitude \approx 0.4 Delta(0) is consistently found just above Tc, which decreases with increasing T. Analysis of our C(T) data indicates that at Tc, at least 77% of the entropy change due to the transition at Tc and associated order parameter fluctuations arise from the lattice and/or charge degrees of freedom and less than 23% from the spin degrees of freedom.

No appreciable shifts of peaks were found s in the valence state of individual V atoms at the phase transition is very small. A remarkable inflection of this temperature dependence at the phase transition at 34 K indicates that charge ordering is associated with the low temperature phase.

Previously we demonstrated the importance of trapped entanglements in determining the elastic and relaxational properties of networks. Here we present new results for the stress versus strain for both dry and swollen networks. Models which limit the fluctuations of the network strands like the tube model are shown to describe the stress for both elongation and compression. For swollen networks, the total modulus is found to decrease like (V_0/V)^{2/3} and goes to the phantom model result only for short strand networks.

We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the swelling of randomly end-cross-linked polymer networks in good solvent conditions. The internal structure of the network strands in the swollen state is characterized by a new exponent nu=0.72. Our findings are in contradiction to de Gennes' c*-theorem, which predicts Q_eq proportional N_s**(4/5) and nu=0.588. We present a simple Flory argument for a self-similar structure of mutually interpenetrating network strands, which yields nu=7/10 and otherwise recovers the classical Flory-Rehner theory. In particular, Q_eq = N_e**(3/5), if N_e is used as effective strand length.

The predicitions of the entanglement length N_e from G_N and from the mean square displacements of the chains segments disagree by a factor of about 2.2(2), indicating an error in the prefactor in the standard formula for G_N. We present a set of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of strongly charged, flexible polyelectrolyte chains under poor solvent conditions in a salt free solution. Structural properties of the chains and of the solutions are reported. By varying the polymer density and the electrostatic interaction strength we study the crossover from a dominating electrostatic interaction to the regime of strong screening, where the hydrophobic interactions dominate. During the crossover a multitude of structures is observed. In the limit of low polymer density strongly stretched, necklace like conformations are found. In the opposite limit of high polymer density which is equivalent to strongly screened electrostatic interactions, we find that the chains are extremely collapsed, however we observe no agglomeration or phase separation. The investigations show that the density of free charges is one of the relevant parameters which rules the behavior of the system and hence should be used as a parameter to explain experimental results.

For diblocks of length N=40 (1.1 N_e) and $100 (3N_e)$, where $N_e$ is the entanglement length of a homopolymer melt at the same density, $D_\parallel$ is nearly independent of $χ$, while $D_\perp$ is strongly suppressed as $χ$ is increased. These results are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on the Rouse model. The isotropic diffusion constant of quenched disordered systems is approximated fairly well by $(2D_\parallel+D_\perp)/3$ of the corresponding lamellar system.

We study the statistical mechanics of double-stranded semi-flexible polymers using both analytical techniques and simulation. We find a transition at some finite temperature, from a type of short range order to a fundamentally different sort of short range order. In the high temperature regime, the 2-point correlation functions of the object are identical to worm-like chains, while in the low temperature regime they are different due to a twist structure. In the low temperature phase, the polymers develop a kink-rod structure which could clarify some recent puzzling experiments on actin.
