The 2D3V Aspherical Particle-in-Cell (APIC) code is developed for modeling of interactions of non-spherical dust grains with plasmas. It simulates the motion of plasma electrons and ions in a self-consistent electric field of plasma-screened charged dust particle. Due to absorption/recombination of plasma particles im**ing on the grain surface, they transfer charge, momentum, angular momentum, as well as kinetic and binding energy, creating currents, forces, torques, and heat fluxes to the grain. The values of such physical parameters determine dust behavior in plasma, including its dynamics and ablation, and can be used in various plasma studies and applications, such as dusty plasmas, fusion devices, laboratory experiments, and astrophysical research. Obtaining these physical values for select non-spherical shapes of conducting dust grains is the main goal of the APIC code simulations.

An impact of neutrals on anomalous edge plasma transport and zonal flow (ZF) is considered. As an example, it is assumed that edge plasma turbulence is driven by the resistive drift wave (RDW) instability. It is found that the actual effect of neutrals is not related to a suppression of the instability \textit{per se}, but due to an impact on the ZF. Particularly, it is shown that, whereas the neutrals make very little impact on the linear growth rate of the RDW instability, they can largely reduce the zonal flow generation in the nonlinear stage, which results in an enhancement of the overall anomalous plasma transport. Even though only RDW instability is considered, it seems that such an impact of neutrals on anomalous edge plasma transport has a very generic feature. It is conceivable that such neutral induced enhancement of anomalous plasma transport is observed experimentally in a detached divertor regime, which is accompanied by a strong increase of neutral density.

The effects of velocity shear on the unstable modes driven by the effective gravity (Rayleigh-Taylor and interchange) and resistive drift wave instabilities for inhomogeneous equilibrium fluid/plasma density are analyzed for the localized eigenmode problems. It is shown that the effect of the velocity shear drastically depends on the type of instability. Whereas the velocity shear can significantly suppress both Rayleigh-Taylor and interchange instabilities, it has only a week impact on the growth rate of the resistive drift wave. This is directly related to the physical nature of these instabilities. For the Rayleigh-Taylor and interchange instabilities, the shear flow tilts the eddies of the stream functions, while for the resistive drift wave instability the shear flow simply shifts the eddies in the radial direction with no tilting. However, for large velocity shear, the eigenmode solutions for resistive drift waves cease to exist.

The dynamics of relativistic electrons in the intense laser radiation and quasi-static electromagnetic fields both along and across to the laser propagating direction are studied in the 3/2 dimensional Hamiltonian framework. It is shown that the unperturbed oscillations of the relativistic electron in these electric fields could exhibit a long tail of harmonics which makes an onset of stochastic electron motion be a primary candidate for electron heating. The Poincaré map**s describing the electron motions in the laser and electric fields only are derived from which the criterions for instability are obtained. It follows that for both transverse and longitudinal electric fields, there exist upper limits of the stochastic electron energy depending on the laser intensity and electric field strength. Specifically, these maximum stochastic energies are enhanced by a strong laser intensity but weak electric field. Such stochastic heating would be reduced by the superluminal phase velocity in both cases. The impacts of the magnetic fields on the electron dynamics are different for these two cases and discussed qualitatively. These analytic results are confirmed by the numerical simulations of solving the 3/2D Hamiltonian equations directly.

The physics governing electron acceleration by a relativistically intense laser are not confined to the critical density surface, they also pervade the sub-critical plasma in front of the target. Here, particles can gain many times the ponderomotive energy from the overlying laser, and strong fields can grow. Experiments using a high contrast laser and a prescribed laser pre-pulse demonstrate that development of the pre-plasma has an unexpectedly strong effect on the most energetic, super-ponderomotive electrons. Presented 2D particle-in-cell simulations reveal how strong, voluminous magnetic structures that evolve in the pre-plasma impact high energy electrons more significantly than low energy ones for longer pulse durations and how the common practice of tilting the target to a modest incidence angle can be enough to initiate strong deflection. The implications are that multiple angular spectral measurements are necessary to prevent misleading conclusions from past and future experiments.

It is shown that in this case electron dynamics can be conveniently described in the framework of 3/2 dimensional Hamiltonian approach. The electron acceleration beyond a standard ponderomotive scaling, caused by the synergistic effects of the laser and static electro-magnetic fields, is due to an onset of stochastic electron motion.

It is shown that the cut-off electron kinetic energy is controllable by the external magnetic field strength and directions. Further studies indicate that for a right-hand circularly polarized laser (RH-CP) of intensity $10^{20}\ \text{W}/\text{cm}^2$ and pre-plasma scale length $10\ μ\text{m}$, the cut-off electron kinetic energy can be as high as $500\ \text{MeV}$, when a homogeneous external magnetic field of exceeding $10000\ \text{T}$ (or $B=ω_{c}/ω_0>1$) is loaded along the laser propagation direction, which is a significant increase compared with that $120\ \text{MeV}$ without external magnetic field. A laser front sharpening mechanism is identified at relativistic laser magnetized-plasmas interactions with $B=ω_{c}/ω_0>1$, which is responsible for these super-high energetic electrons.

As an extension of the previous work [ar** other conditions the same. It is found that in the presence of large scale pre-formed plasmas, super-high energetic electrons can be generated at relativistic CP laser-solid interactions. For laser of intensity $10^{20}\ \text{W}/\text{cm}^2$ and pre-plasma scale-length $10\ μ\text{m}$, the cut-off energy of electron by CP laser is $120\ \text{MeV}$ compared with $100\ \text{MeV}$ in the case of linearly polarized (LP) laser. The unexpected super-high energetic electron acceleration can also be explained by the two-stage acceleration model, {by taking into account the envelop modulation effects of the reflected CP laser pulse.} The underlying physics of this envelop modulation is figured out, and a modified first-stage electron acceleration scaling law in the presence of the modulated-CP laser is also obtained.

The generation of super-high energetic electrons influenced by pre-plasma at relativistic intensity laser-matter interaction is studied in a one-dimensional slab approximation with particle-in-cell simulations. Different pre-plasma scale-lengths of $1\ μ\text{m}$, $5\ μ\text{m}$, $10\ μ\text{m}$ and $15\ μ\text{m}$ are considered, showing an increase in both particle number and cut-off kinetic energy of electrons with the increase of pre-plasma scale-length, and the cut-off kinetic energy greatly exceeding the corresponding laser ponderomotive energy. A two-stage electron acceleration model is proposed to explain the underlying physics. The first stage is attributed to the synergetic acceleration by longitudinal electric field and laser pulse, with its efficiency depending on the pre-plasma scale-length. These electrons pre-accelerated in the first stage could build up an intense electrostatic potential barrier with its maximal value several times as large of the initial electron kinetic energy. Part of energetic electrons could be further accelerated by the reflection off the electrostatic potential barrier, with their finial kinetic energies significantly higher than the values pre-accelerated in the first stage.
