In this study, we construct an evolutionary model of a population of DNA sequences interacting with the surrounding environment on the topological monoid A* of strings on the alphabet A = { a, c, g, t }. A partial differential equation governing the evolution of the DNA population is derived as a kind of diffusion equation on A*. Analyzing the constructed model in a theoretical manner, we present conditions for sympatric speciation, the possibility of which continues to be discussed. It is shown that under other same conditions one condition determines whether sympatric speciation occurs or the DNA population continues to move around randomly in a subset of A*. We next demonstrate that the population maintains a kind of equlibrium state under certain conditions. In this situation, the population remains nearly unchanged and does not differentiate even if it can differentiate into others. Furthermore, we calculate the probability of sympatric speciation and the time expected to elapse before it.

We report detections of new exoplanets from a radial velocity (RV) survey of metal-rich FGK stars by using three telescopes. By optimizing our RV analysis method to long time-baseline observations, we have succeeded in detecting five new Jovian-planets around three metal-rich stars HD 1605, HD 1666, and HD 67087 with the masses of $1.3 M_{\odot}$, $1.5 M_{\odot}$, and $1.4 M_{\odot}$, respectively. A K1 subgiant star HD 1605 hosts two planetary companions with the minimum masses of $ M_p \sin i = 0.96 M_{\mathrm{JUP}}$ and $3.5 M_{\mathrm{JUP}}$ in circular orbits with the planets' periods $P = 577.9$ days and $2111$ days, respectively. HD 1605 shows a significant linear trend in RVs. Such a system consisting of Jovian planets in circular orbits has rarely been found and thus HD 1605 should be an important example of a multi-planetary system that is likely unperturbed by planet-planet interactions. HD 1666 is a F7 main sequence star which hosts an eccentric and massive planet of $ M_p \sin i = 6.4 M_{\mathrm{JUP}}$ in the orbit with $a_{\rm p} = 0.94$ AU and an eccentricity $e=0.63$. Such an eccentric and massive planet can be explained as a result of planet-planet interactions among Jovian planets. While we have found the large residuals of $\mathrm{rms} = 35.6\ \mathrm{m\ s^{-1}}$, the periodogram analysis does not support any additional periodicities. Finally, HD 67087 hosts two planets of $ M_p \sin i = 3.1 M_{\mathrm{JUP}}$ and $4.9 M_{\mathrm{JUP}}$ in orbits with $P=352.2$ days and $2374$ days, and $e=0.17$ and $0.76$, respectively. Although the current RVs do not lead to accurate determinations of its orbit and mass, HD 67087 c can be one of the most eccentric planets ever discovered in multiple systems.

In this study, we address the problem of clustering string data in an unsupervised manner by develo** a theory of a mixture model and an EM algorithm for string data based on probability theory on a topological monoid of strings developed in our previous studies. We first construct a parametric distribution on a set of strings in the motif of the Laplace distribution on a set of real numbers and reveal its basic properties. This Laplace-like distribution has two parameters: a string that represents the location of the distribution and a positive real number that represents the dispersion. It is difficult to explicitly write maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters because their log likelihood function is a complex function, the variables of which include a string; however, we construct estimators that almost surely converge to the maximum likelihood estimators as the number of observed strings increases and demonstrate that the estimators strongly consistently estimate the parameters. Next, we develop an iteration algorithm for estimating the parameters of the mixture model of the Laplace-like distributions and demonstrate that the algorithm almost surely converges to the EM algorithm for the Laplace-like mixture and strongly consistently estimates its parameters as the numbers of observed strings and iterations increase. Finally, we derive a procedure for unsupervised string clustering from the Laplace-like mixture that is asymptotically optimal in the sense that the posterior probability of making correct classifications is maximized.

With an aim to examine how much information of solar rotation can be obtained purely spectroscopically by observing the sun-as-a-star during the 2012 May 21 eclipse at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, we studied the variation of radial velocities (V_r), which were derived by using the iodine-cell technique based on a set of 184 high-dispersion spectra consecutively obtained over the time span of ~4 hours. The resulting V_r(t) was confirmed to show the characteristic variation (Rossiter-McLaughlin effect) caused by time-varying visibility of the solar disk. By comparing the observed V_r(t) curve with the theoretical ones, which were simulated with the latitude (psi) dependent solar rotation law omega(psi) = A + B sin^2(psi) (deg/day), we found that the relation B = -5.5 A + 77 gives the best fit, though separate determinations of A and B were not possible. Since this relationship is consistent with the real values known for the sun (A = 14.5, B = -2.8), we may state that our analysis yielded satisfactory results. This consequence may provide a prospect of getting useful information on stellar rotation of eclipsing binaries from radial-velocity studies during eclipse, if many spectra of sufficiently high time-resolution are available.

Red giants are evolved stars which exhibit solar-like oscillations. Although a multitude of stars have been observed with space telescopes, only a handful of red-giant stars were targets of spectroscopic asteroseismic observing projects. We search for solar-like oscillations in the two bright red-giant stars $γ$ Psc and $θ^1$ Tau from time series of ground-based spectroscopy and determine the frequency of the excess of oscillation power $ν_{max}$ and the mean large frequency separation $Δν$ for both stars. The radial velocities of $γ$ Psc and $θ^1$ Tau were monitored for 120 and 190 days, respectively. Nearly 9000 spectra were obtained. To reach the accurate radial velocities, we used simultaneous thorium-argon and iodine-cell calibration of our optical spectra. In addition to the spectroscopy, we acquired VLTI observations of $γ$ Psc for an independent estimate of the radius. Also 22 days of observations of $θ^1$ Tau with the MOST-satellite were analysed. The frequency analysis of the radial velocity data of $γ$ Psc revealed an excess of oscillation power around 32 $μ$Hz and a large frequency separation of 4.1$\pm$0.1$μ$Hz. $θ^1$ Tau exhibits oscillation power around 90 $μ$Hz, with a large frequency separation of 6.9$\pm$0.2$μ$Hz. Scaling relations indicate that $γ$ Psc is a star of about $\sim$1 M$_\odot$ and $\sim$10 R$_\odot$. $θ^1$ Tau appears to be a massive star of about $\sim$2.7 M$_\odot$ and $\sim$11 R$_\odot$. The radial velocities of both stars were found to be modulated on time scales much longer than the oscillation periods. While the mass of $θ^1$ Tau is in agreement with results from dynamical parallaxes, we find a lower mass for $γ$ Psc than what is given in the literature. The long periodic variability agrees with the expected time scales of rotational modulation.

Numbers and numerical vectors account for a large portion of data. However, recently the amount of string data generated has increased dramatically. Consequently, classifying string data is a common problem in many fields. The most widely used approach to this problem is to convert strings into numerical vectors using string kernels and subsequently apply a support vector machine that works in a numerical vector space. However, this non-one-to-one conversion involves a loss of information and makes it impossible to evaluate, using probability theory, the generalization error of a learning machine, considering that the given data to train and test the machine are strings generated according to probability laws. In this study, we approach this classification problem by constructing a classifier that works in a set of strings. To evaluate the generalization error of such a classifier theoretically, probability theory for strings is required. Therefore, we first extend a limit theorem on the asymptotic behavior of a consensus sequence of strings, which is the counterpart of the mean of numerical vectors, as demonstrated in the probability theory on a metric space of strings developed by one of the authors and his colleague in a previous study [18]. Using the obtained result, we then demonstrate that our learning machine classifies strings in an asymptotically optimal manner. Furthermore, we demonstrate the usefulness of our machine in practical data analysis by applying it to predicting protein--protein interactions using amino acid sequences.

Three CCD cameras for simultaneous g'RcIc photometry are to be mounted on each focal plane, covering a wide FOV of about 30" x 30". The limiting magnitude at V is fainter than 18. In addition to these two optical telescopes, a 91-cm IR telescope with a 1 deg x 1 deg field of view is being built at OAO, which performs photometry in YJHK bands. These robotic telescopes can start the observation of counterparts of a GRB within a minute from an alert. We aim to obtain photometric redshifts exceeding 10 with these telescopes. The performance and the current construction status of the telescopes are presented.

By using the high-dispersion spectra of 14 bright planet-harboring stars (along with 4 reference stars) observed with the new coude echelle spectrograph at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, we investigated the abundances of volatile elements (C, N, O, S, Zn; low condensation temperature Tc) in order to examine whether these show any significant difference compared to the abundances of other refractory elements (Si, Ti, V, Fe, Co, Ni; high Tc) which are known to be generally overabundant in those stars with planets, since a Tc-dependence is expected if the cause of such a metal-richness is due to the accretion of solid planetesimals onto the host star. We found, however, that all elements we studied behave themselves quite similarly to Fe (i.e., [X/Fe]~0) even for the case of volatile elements, which may suggest that the enhanced metallicity in those planet-bearing stars is not so much an acquired character (by accretion of rocky material) as rather primordial.
