Femtosecond time-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements were performed at room temperature on a single crystal of LuFe2O4, which has recently attracted attention as an electronic ferroelectric material in which polarization occurs due to the real-space arrangement of Fe2+ and Fe3+. We irradiated the crystal with 800 nm laser pulses, traced the subsequent SHG changes, and observed anisotropic polarization dynamics: immediately after photoexcitation, the in-plane (ab-plane) component of the SHG greatly reduced, while the inter-plane (c-axis) SHG increased. This means that a hidden photoexcited state, in which the in-plane charge ordering is broken but the polarization along c-axis direction enhanced, has been created by photoexcitation, indicating that the electronic ferroelectricity can be controlled on a femtosecond scale.

Abstract:
We performed femtosecond reflection spectroscopy on a series of perovskite-type cobalt oxide $R$BaCo$_2$O$_{6-δ}$ ($R$=Sm, Gd, and Tb) crystals, in which the electronic transfer was controlled by $R$.
The transient reflectivity and the optical conductivity ($σ^{\rm PI}(ω)$) obtained by Kramers-Kronig analysis showed an ultrafast change within a time resolution ($\approx 150$ fs) at room temperat…

The transient reflectivity and the optical conductivity ($σ^{\rm PI}(ω)$) obtained by Kramers-Kronig analysis showed an ultrafast change within a time resolution ($\approx 150$ fs) at room temperature and the appearance of signals of a hidden state different from the high temperature metallic state. The transferred spectral weight in $σ^{\rm PI}(ω)$ upon photoexcitation sensitively depended on the $R$-species, indicating an important role of electronic correlation in the photoexcited state.

Abstract:
Phase evolution in (Ag1-xLix)NbO3 (ALN) solid solution was investigated by X-ray diffraction technique, dielectric and polarization measurements. It is shown that small substitution of Ag with Li gives rise to an orthorhombic-rhombohedral structural transformation in ABO3-perovskite silver niobate at room temperature. Structural refinements indicate that both A- and B-site displacements contribute…

Structural refinements indicate that both A- and B-site displacements contribute to the spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric phase with symmetry R3c. Increasing Li-concentration enhances the ferroelectric rhombohedral distortion, resulting in the increase of the para-ferroelectric phase transition temperature and the polarization of the solid solutions.
