In recent years, the supply and demand of electricity has significantly increased. As a result, the interconnecting grid infrastructure has required (and will continue to require) further expansion, while allowing for rapid resolution of unforeseen failures. Energy grid operators strive for networks that satisfy different levels of security requirements. In the case of N-1 security for medium voltage networks, the goal is to ensure the continued provision of electricity in the event of a single-link failure. However, the process of determining if networks are N-1 secure is known to scale polynomially in the network size. This poses restrictions if we increase our demand of the network. In that case, more computationally hard cases will occur in practice and the computation time also increases significantly. In this work, we explore the potential of quantum computers to provide a more scalable solution. In particular, we consider gate-based quantum computing, quantum annealing, and photonic quantum computing.

Abstract:
We study surface defects in three-dimensional topological quantum field theories which separate different theories of Reshetikhin-Turaev type. Based on the new notion of a Frobenius algebra over two commutative Frobenius algebras, we present an explicit and computable construction of such defects. It specialises to the construction in Carqueville et al., arXiv:1710.10214 if all 3-strata are labell…

Based on the new notion of a Frobenius algebra over two commutative Frobenius algebras, we present an explicit and computable construction of such defects. It specialises to the construction in Carqueville et al., arXiv:1710.10214 if all 3-strata are labelled by the same topological field theory. We compare the results to the model-independent analysis in Fuchs et al., arXiv:1203.4568 and find agreement.

Abstract:
We define an exactly solvable model for 2+1D topological phases of matter on a triangulated surface derived from a crossed module of semisimple finite-dimensional Hopf algebras, the `Hopf-algebraic higher Kitaev model'. This model generalizes both the Kitaev quantum double model for a semisimple Hopf algebra and the full higher Kitaev model derived from a 2-group, and can hence be interpreted as a…

We define an exactly solvable model for 2+1D topological phases of matter on a triangulated surface derived from a crossed module of semisimple finite-dimensional Hopf algebras, the `Hopf-algebraic higher Kitaev model'. This model generalizes both the Kitaev quantum double model for a semisimple Hopf algebra and the full higher Kitaev model derived from a 2-group, and can hence be interpreted as a Hopf-algebraic discrete higher gauge theory.
We construct a family of crossed modules of semisimple Hopf algebras, $(\mathscr{F}_{\mathbb{C}}(X) \otimes \mathbb{C}E \xrightarrow{\partial} \mathscr{F}_{\mathbb{C}}(Y) \rtimes \mathbb{C} G, \triangleright)$, that depends on four finite groups, $E,G,X$ and $Y$. We calculate the ground-state spaces of the resulting model on a triangulated surface when $G=E=\{1\}$ and when $Y=\{1\}$, prove that those ground-state spaces are canonically independent of the triangulations, and so depend only on the underlying surface; and moreover we find a 2+1D TQFT whose state spaces on surfaces give the ground-state spaces. These TQFTs are particular cases of Quinn's finite total homotopy TQFT and hence the state spaces assigned to surfaces are free vector spaces on sets of homotopy classes of maps from a surface to homotopy finite spaces, in this case obtained as classifying spaces of finite groupoids and finite crossed modules of groupoids.
We leave it as an open problem whether the ground-state space of the Hopf-algebraic higher Kitaev model on a triangulated surface is independent of the triangulation for general crossed modules of semisimple Hopf algebras, whether a TQFT always exists whose state space on a surface gives the ground-state space of the model, and whether the ground-state space of the model obtained from $E,G,X,Y$ can always be given a homotopical explanation.

We construct a Kitaev model, consisting of a Hamiltonian which is the sum of commuting local projectors, for surfaces with boundaries and defects of dimension 0 and 1. More specifically, we show that one can consider cell decompositions of surfaces whose 2-cells are labeled by semisimple Hopf algebras and 1-cells are labeled by semisimple bicomodule algebras. We introduce an algebra whose representations label the 0-cells and which reduces to the Drinfeld double of a Hopf algebra in the absence of defects. In this way we generalize the algebraic structure underlying the standard Kitaev model without defects or boundaries, where all 1-cells and 2-cells are labeled by a single Hopf algebra and where point defects are labeled by representations of its Drinfeld double. In the standard case, commuting local projectors are constructed using the Haar integral for semisimple Hopf algebras. A central insight we gain in this paper is that in the presence of defects and boundaries, the suitable generalization of the Haar integral is given by the unique symmetric separability idempotent for a semisimple (bi-)comodule algebra.

In this paper we study the isotypic decomposition of the regular module of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. For a semisimple Hopf algebra, the idempotents realizing the isotypic decomposition can be explicitly expressed in terms of characters and the Haar integral. In this paper we investigate Hopf algebras with the Chevalley property, which are not necessarily semisimple. We find explicit expressions for idempotents in terms of Hopf-algebraic data, where the Haar integral is replaced by the regular character of the dual Hopf algebra. For a large class of Hopf algebras, these are shown to form a complete set of orthogonal idempotents. We give an example which illustrates that the Chevalley property is crucial.
