In this paper we discuss an approach to calculate knot polynomials on a photonic processor. Calculations of knot polynomials is a computationally difficult problem and therefore it is interesting to use new advanced calculation methods to find them. Here we present a proof of concept by calculating the simplest knot polynomial of the trefoil knot in fundamental representation. This approach, however, can easily be generalized to more complex knots and representations. Same operators can also be realized on a quantum computer with the same effect.

Integration of 2D semiconductors with photonic crystal slabs provides an attractive approach to achieve strong light--matter coupling and exciton-polariton formation in a planar chip-compatible geometry. However, for the development of practical devices, it is crucial that the polariton excitations in the structure are easily tunable and exhibit strong nonlinear response. Here we study neutral and charged exciton-polaritons in an electrostatically gated planar photonic crystal slab with an embedded monolayer semiconductor MoSe$_2$ and experimentally demonstrate strong polariton nonlinearity, which can be tuned via gate voltage. We find that modulation of dielectric environment within the photonic crystal results in the formation of two distinct resonances with significantly different nonlinear response, which enables optical switching with ultrashort laser pulses. Our results open new avenues towards development of active polaritonic devices in a compact chip-compatible implementation.

We demonstrate successful error mitigation of indistinguishability-related noise in a quantum photonic processor. We apply zero-noise extrapolation (ZNE) technique to a variational quantum eigensolver (VQE). The observable values measured at two-different error levels allow us to extrapolate it towards noise-free regime. We study influence of the partial distinguishability of photons in a two-qubit processor which implements the VQE for a Schwinger Hamiltonian. The results evidence the improvement of the Hamiltonian eigenvalue estimation using the ZNE procedure. Lastly, we analyze potential applicability of this error mitigation method to other linear optical processors with externally controlled polarization.

The interferometer has been fabricated with femtosecond laser writing and it is the largest programmable interferometer of this kind to date. We have demonstrated its advantageous error tolerance by showing an operation in a broad wavelength range from $920$ to $980$ nm, which is particularly relevant for quantum photonics due to efficient photon sources. Interaction of plasma flow with a magnetic obstacle is a frequent process in many laser-plasma experiments in the laboratory, and is an important event in many astrophysical objects such as X-ray pulsars, AGN, GRB etc. As a result of plasma penetration through the magnetic wall we could expect a formation of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) shock waves, as well as of electromagnetic (EM) ones. To study these processes we need equations following from hydrodynamic and Maxwell equations, which in the limiting situations describe MHD and EM waves, and are valid for the general case, when both phenomena are present. Here we derive a set of equations following from hydrodynamic and Maxwell equations, without neglecting a displacement current, needed for a formation of EM waves. We find a dispersion equation describing a propagation of a weak linear wave in a magnetized plasma along the $x$ axis, perpendicular to the magnetic field $H_y(x)$, which contains MHD, hydrodynamic and EM waves in the limiting cases, and some new types of behaviour in a general situation. We consider a plasma with zero viscosity and heat conductivity, but with a finite electric conductivity with a scalar coefficient.

Guided 2D exciton-polaritons, resulting from the strong coupling of excitons in semiconductors with non-radiating waveguide modes, provide an attractive approach towards develo** novel on-chip optical devices. These quasiparticles are characterized by long propagation distances and efficient nonlinear interaction but cannot be directly accessed from the free space. Here we demonstrate a powerful approach for probing and manipulating guided polaritons in a Ta2O5 slab integrated with a WS2 monolayer using evanescent coupling through a high-index solid immersion lens. Tuning the nanoscale lens-sample gap allows for extracting all the intrinsic parameters of the system. We also demonstrate the transition from weak to strong coupling accompanied by the onset of the motional narrowing effect: with the increase of exciton-photon coupling strength, the inhomogeneous contribution to polariton linewidth, inherited from the exciton resonance, becomes fully lifted. Our results enable the development of integrated optics employing room-temperature exciton-polaritons in 2D semiconductor-based structures.

The thermodynamic properties of electron gas under the extreme conditions of high temperature, high matter density, and/or a strong magnetic field largely determine the behaviour of matter in upper layers of neutron stars and accretion columns of magnetized neutron stars in binary systems. A strong magnetic field in these objects makes the motion of electrons across the field essentially quantum. The possible electron degeneracy and relativism of electrons are also important. When studying accretion onto a magnetar in a binary system, the intensive generation of electron-positron pairs in the quantizing magnetic field should also be taken into account. We consider in detail the thermodynamic properties of a gas of free electrons in strong magnetic fields, taking into account their relativism and degeneracy, as well as the equilibrium creation of electron-positron pairs in a high-temperature plasma in the presence of a quantizing magnetic field.

Determination of a magnetic field structure on a neutron star (NS) surface is an important problem of a modern astrophysics. In a presence of strong magnetic fields a thermal conductivity of a degenerate matter is anisotropic. In this paper we present 3D anisotropic heat transfer simulations in outer layers of magnetized NSs, and construct synthetic thermal light curves. We have used a different from previous works tensorial thermal conductivity coefficient of electrons, derived from the analytical solution of the Boltzmann equation by the Chapman-Enskog method. We have obtained a NS surface temperature distribution in presence of dipole-plus-quadrupole magnetic fields. We consider a case, in which magnetic axes of a dipole and quadrupole components of the magnetic field are not aligned. To examine observational manifestations of such fields we have generated thermal light curves for the obtained temperature distributions using a composite black-body model. It is shown, that the simplest (only zero-order spherical function in quadrupole component) non-coaxial dipole-plus-quadrupole magnetic field distribution can significantly affect the thermal light curves, making pulse profiles non-symmetric and amplifying pulsations in comparison to the pure-dipolar field.

Periodic changes in a thermal soft X-ray flux of a rotating neutron star indicate a non-uniform distribution of the surface temperature. A possible cause of this phenomenon is a suppression of the heat flux across the magnetic field lines in a crust and an envelope of magnetized neutron stars. In this paper we study three-dimensional effects, associated with non-axisymmetric magnetic fields in neutron stars. We calculate the surface temperature distribution by solving numerically a three dimensional heat transfer equation in a magnetized neutron star crust. We adopt an anisotropic (tensorial) electron thermal conductivity coefficient, which is derived as an analytical solution of the Boltzmann equation with a Chapman-Enskog method. To calculate the surface temperature distribution, we construct a local one-dimensional plane-parallel model ("Ts-Tb"-relationship) of a magnetized neutron star envelope. We then use it as an outer boundary condition for the three-dimensional problem in the crust to find the self-consistent solution. To study possible observational manifestations from anisotropic temperature distributions we calculate light curves with a composite black-body model. Our calculations show, that a non-axisymmetric magnetic field distribution can lead to the irregular non-sinusoidal shape of a pulse profile as well as in some cases a significant amplification of pulsations of the thermal flux in comparison to the pure-dipolar magnetic field configurations.

The decomposition of large unitary matrices into smaller ones is important, because it provides ways to realization of classical and quantum information processing schemes. Today, most of the methods use planar meshes of tunable two-channel blocks, however, the schemes turn out to be sensitive to fabrication errors. We study a novel decomposition method based on multi-channel blocks. We have shown that the scheme is universal even when the block`s transfer matrices are chosen at random, making it virtually insensitive to errors. Moreover, the placement of the variable elements can be arbitrary, so that the scheme is not bound to specific topologies. Our method can be beneficial for large-scale implementations of unitary transformations by techniques, which are not of wide proliferation today or yet to be developed.

Integrated optical devices are becoming a common tool in modern optical science and engineering. This devices should be designed to allow for precise control and manipulation of light. The femtosecond laser written (FSLW) photonic chips have proven to cope with the most current demands of integrated photonics. However, up to date the polarization degree of freedom has rarely been exploited in experiments performed on the FSLW integrated platform. The main obstacle is an intrinsically low anisotropy of laser written waveguides, preventing the design of polarizing integrated devices with small footprint. In this Letter we demonstrate the approach based on stress-induced anisotropy allowing us to decrease the size of polarizing directional couplers fabricated with the FSLW technology by almost an order of magnitude. We provide an accurate account for the effects emerging in waveguides written in a close proximity to each over.
