We prove the hydrodynamic limit for a one-dimensional harmonic chain of interacting atoms with a random flip of the momentum sign. The system is open: at the left boundary it is attached to a heat bath at temperature $T_-$, while at the right endpoint it is subject to an action of a force which reads as $\bar F + \frac 1{\sqrt n} \widetilde{\mathcal F} (n^2 t)$, where $\bar F \ge0$ and $\widetilde{\mathcal F}(t)$ is a periodic function. Here $n$ is the size of the microscopic system. Under a diffusive scaling of space-time, we prove that the empirical profiles of the two locally conserved quantities - the volume stretch and the energy - converge, as $n\to+\infty$, to the solution of a non-linear diffusive system of conservative partial differential equations with a Dirichlet type and Neumann boundary conditions on the left and the right endpoints, respectively.

We study the problem of homogenization of a family of Lévy type processes $(X_t^{\varepsilon,x;ω})_{t\ge0}$, $\varepsilon\in(0,1]$, starting at $x\in\mathbb{R}^d$ and whose random Fourier symbols equal $q_\varepsilon(x,ξ;ω)=\frac{1}{\varepsilon^α}q\Big(\frac{x}{\varepsilon},\varepsilonξ;ω\Big)$, where $$q(x,ξ;ω)=-ib(x;ω)\cdotξ+ξ\cdot a(x;ω)ξ+\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}(1-e^{i y\cdotξ}+i y \cdot \xi1_{\{|y|\le1\}})n(x,dy;ω),$$ for $(x,ξ,ω)\in \mathbb{R}^{2d}\timesΩ$. Here, $α\in(0,2]$ and the Lévy triplet $(b(x;ω), a(x;ω), n(x,\cdot;ω))_{x\in \mathbb{R}^d}$ is a stationary ergodic random field over some probability space $(Ω,μ)$. Our main assumptions are that: 1) for any $ω$, the operator $-q(\cdot,D;ω)$, defined on $C^2_c(\mathbb{R}^d)$, is closable in the space of continuous functions vanishing at infinity and its closure generates a Feller semigroup, 2) there exist constants $c_Q,C_Q>0$ independent of $(x,ξ,ω)$, such that Re $q(x,ξ;ω) \ge c_Q|ξ|^α$ for $ξ\in\mathbb{R}^d$ and $|q(x,ξ;ω)| \le C_Q|ξ|^α$ for $|ξ|\le 1$, and 3) $q_\varepsilon(0,ξ;ω)\approx q_L(ξ;ω)$, as $\varepsilon\to 0$, in $μ$-probability, where $q_L(ξ;ω)$ is the Fourier symbol of some Lévy process for each $ω$. Under some technical assumptions, we show the weak convergence of the laws of $(X_t^{\varepsilon,x;\cdot})_{t\ge0}$ in the Skorokhod space, as $\varepsilon\to0$, to a Lévy process whose Fourier symbol $\bar q(ξ)$ is given by $\int_Ω q_L(ξ)Φ_*dμ$, where $Φ_*$ is a strictly positive density w.r.t. $μ$. Our result has an analytic interpretation in terms of the convergence of the solutions of random integro-differential equations $\partial_tu_\varepsilon(t,x;ω)=-q_\varepsilon(x,D;ω) u_\varepsilon(t,x;ω)$.

For the KPZ equation on a torus with a $1+1$ spacetime white noise, it was shown in \cite{GK21,ADYGTK22} that the height function satisfies a central limit theorem, and the variance can be written as the expectation of an exponential functional of Brownian bridges. In this paper, we consider another physically relevant quantity, the winding number of the directed polymer on a cylinder, or equivalently, the displacement of the directed polymer endpoint in a spatially periodic random environment. It was shown in \cite{YGTK22} that the polymer endpoint satisfies a central limit theorem on diffusive scales. The main result of this paper is an explicit expression of the effective diffusivity, in terms of the expectation of another exponential functional of Brownian bridges. Our argument is based on a combination of tools from Malliavin calculus, homogenization, and diffusion in distribution-valued random environments.

We derive a macroscopic heat equation for the temperature of a pinned harmonic chain subject to a periodic force at its right side and in contact with a heat bath at its left side.
The microscopic dynamics in the bulk is given by the Hamiltonian equation of motion plus a reversal of the velocity of a particle occurring independently for each particle at exponential times, with rate $γ$. The latter produces a finite heat conductivity. Starting with an initial probability distribution for a chain of $n$ particles we compute the local temperature given by the expected value of the local energy and current. Scaling space and time diffusively yields, in the $n\to+\infty$ limit, the heat equation for the macroscopic temperature profile $T(t,u),$ $t>0$, $u \in [0,1]$. It is to be solved for initial conditions $T(0,u)$ and specified $T(t,0)=T_-$, the temperature of the left heat reservoir and a fixed heat flux $J$, entering the system at $u=1$. $J$ is the work done by the periodic force which is computed explicitly for each $n$.

The particles also undergo a random velocity reversal action, which results in a finite heat conductivity of the system. We prove the approach of the system to a time periodic state and compute the heat current, equal to the time averaged work done on the system, in that state. This work approaches a finite positive value as the length of the chain increases. Rescaling space, the strength and/or the period of the force leads to a macroscopic temperature profile corresponding to the stationary solution of a continuum heat equation with Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions.

Moreover, the particle interacts with an interface in such a way that it can randomly be reflected, transmitted, or killed, and the corresponding probabilities depend on whether the particle arrives at the interface from the left, or right. We prove that the limit process is a minimal Brownian motion, if the probability of killing is positive. In the case of no killing, the limit is a skew Brownian motion.

In this paper, we study the free energy of the directed polymer on a cylinder of radius $L$ with the inverse temperature $β$. Assuming the random environment is given by a Gaussian process that is white in time and smooth in space, with an arbitrary compactly supported spatial covariance function, we obtain precise scaling behaviors of the limiting free energy for high temperatures $β\ll1$, followed by large $L\gg1$, in all dimensions. Our approach is based on a perturbative expansion of the PDE hierarchy satisfied by the multipoint correlation function of the polymer endpoint distribution. For the random environment given by the $1+1$ spacetime white noise, we derive an explicit expression of the limiting free energy, confirming the result obtained through the replica method in [12].

In the paper we prove a generalization of the Hopf lemma for weak subsolutions of the equation: $-Au+cu=0$ in $D$, for a wide class of Lévy type integro-differential operators $A$, bounded and measurable function $c:D\to[0,+\infty)$ and domain $D\subset \BR^d$. More precisely, we prove that if {\em the strong maximum principle} (SMP) holds for $A$, then there exists a Borel function $ψ:D\to(0,+\infty)$, depending only on the coefficients of the operator $A$, $c$ and $D$ such that for any subsolution $u(\cdot)$ one can find a constant $a>0$ (that in general depends on $u$), for which $\sup_{y\in {\rm cl}D\cup {\cal S}(D)}u(y)-u(x)\ge aψ(x)$, $x\in D$. Here ${\rm cl}D$ is the closure of $D$. The set ${\cal S}(D)$ - called the range of non-locality of $A$ over $D$ - is determined by the support of the Levy jump measure associated with $A$. This type of a result we call the {\em generalized Hopf lemma}. It turns out that the irreducibility property of the resolvent of $A$ implies the SMP. The converse also holds, provided we assume some additional (rather weak) assumption on the resolvent. For some classes of operators we can admit the constant $a$ to be equal to $ \sup_{y\in {\rm cl}D\cup {\cal S}(D)}u(y)$. We call this type of a result a {\em quantitative version} of the Hopf lemma. Finally, we formulate a necessary and sufficient condition on $A$ - expressed in terms of ergodic properties of its resolvent - which ensures that the lower bound $ψ\in {\rm span}(\varphi_D)$, where $\varphi_D$ is a non-negative eigenfunction of $A$ in $D$. We show that the aforementioned ergodic property is implied by the intrinsic ultracontractivity of the semigroup associated with $A$.

Some of our results may be considered "quantitative" versions of the Hopf lemma, as they provide the lower bound on the outward normal directional derivative at the maximum point of a subsolution %on a boundary of a domain in terms of its value at the point. We shall also show lower bounds on the subsolution around its maximum point by the principal eigenfunction associated with $A$ and the domain. In particular, for some initial data and noises we identify the invariant probability measure for the system and give a sufficient condition under which it is unique and stochastically stable. In the second part of the note, we consider a simple example of a finite-dimensional system of stochastic differential equations driven by a one dimensional Wiener process with a drift, that displays some similarity with the stochastic N.S.E., and investigate its ergodic properties depending on the strength of the drift. If the latter is sufficiently small and lies below a critical threshold, then the system admits a unique invariant probability measure which is Gaussian. If, on the other hand, the strength of the noise drift is larger than the threshold, then in addition to a Gaussian invariant probability measure, there exist another one. We consider the limit of a linear kinetic equation, with reflection-transmission-absorption at an interface, with a degenerate scattering kernel. The equation arise from a microscopic chain of oscillators in contact with a heat bath. In the absence of the interface, the solutions exhibit a superdiffusive behavior in the long time limit. With the interface, the long time limit is the unique solution of a version of the fractional in space heat equation, with reflection-transmission-absorption at the interface. The limit problem corresponds to a certain stable process that is either absorbed, reflected, or transmitted upon crossing the interface.

We consider a one-dimensional chain of coupled oscillators in contact at both ends with heat baths at different temperatures, and subject to an external force at one end. The Hamiltonian dynamics in the bulk is perturbed by random exchanges of the neighbouring momenta such that the energy is locally conserved. We prove that in the stationary state the energy and the volume stretch profiles, in large scale limit, converge to the solutions of a diffusive system with Dirichlet boundary conditions. As a consequence the macroscopic temperature stationary profile presents a maximum inside the chain higher than the thermostats temperatures, as well as the possibility of uphill diffusion (energy current against the temperature gradient). Finally, we are also able to derive the non-stationary macroscopic coupled diffusive equations followed by the energy and volume stretch profiles.

We prove that when the field is Gaussian, locally stationary, quasi-periodic in the $x$ variable and strongly mixing in time the solutions $u_\eps(t,x)$ converge in law, as $\eps\to0$, to $ u_0(x(T;t,x))$, where $\left(x(s;t,x)\right)_{s\ge t}$ is a diffusion satisfying $x(t;t,x)=x$. The averages of $u_\eps(T,x)$ converge then to the solution of the corresponding Kolmogorov backward equation.

In the linear setting, classical results show that the characteristics converge in distribution to a homogenized Brownian motion, hence the point-wise law of the solution is close to a functional of the Brownian motion. Our main result is that the nonlinearity plays the role of a \emph{random diffeomorphism}, and the point-wise limiting distribution is obtained by applying the diffeomorphism to the limit in the linear setting.

We consider the Schrödinger equation with a time-independent weakly random potential of a strength $ε\ll 1$, with Gaussian statistics. We prove that when the initial condition varies on a scale much larger than the correlation length of the potential, the compensated wave function converges to a deterministic limit on the time scale $t\simε^{-2}$. This is shown under the sharp assumption that the correlation function $R(x)$ of the random potential decays slower than $1/|x|^2$, which ensures that the effective potential is finite. When $R(x)$ decays slower than $1/|x|^2$ we establish an anomalous diffusive behavior for the averaged wave function on a time scale shorter than $ε^{-2}$, as long as the initial condition is "sufficiently macroscopic". We also consider the kinetic regime when the initial condition varies on the same scale as the random potential and obtain the limit of the averaged wave function for potentials with the correlation functions decaying faster than $1/|x|^2$. We use random potentials of the Schonberg class which allows us to bypass the oscillatory phase estimates.

The random exchange models the effects of nonlinearities of anharmonic chains and the resulting dynamics have similar macroscopic behaviour. We consider a one dimensional infinite acoustic chain of harmonic oscillators whose dynamics is perturbed by a random exchange of velocities, such that the energy and momentum of the chain are conserved. Consequently, the evolution of the system has only three conserved quantities: volume, momentum and energy. We show the existence of two space--time scales on which the en- ergy of the system evolves. On the hyperbolic scale (t$ε$--1,x$ε$--1) the limits of the conserved quantities satisfy a Euler system of equa- tions, while the thermal part of the energy macroscopic profile re- mains stationary. Thermal energy starts evolving at a longer time scale, corresponding to the superdiffusive scaling (t$ε$--3/2, x$ε$--1) and follows a fractional heat equation. We also prove the diffusive scal- ing limit of the Riemann invariants - the so called normal modes, corresponding to the linear hyperbolic propagation.

We consider an elliptic eigenvalue problem with a fast cellular flow of amplitude $A$, in a two-dimensional domain with $L^2$ cells. For fixed $A$, and $L \to \infty$, the problem homogenizes, and has been well studied. Also well studied is the limit when $L$ is fixed, and $A \to \infty$. In this case the solution equilibrates along stream lines.
In this paper, we show that if \textit{both} $A \to \infty$ and $L \to \infty$, then a transition between the homogenization and averaging regimes occurs at $A \approx L^4$. When $A\gg L^4$, the principal Dirichlet eigenvalue is approximately constant. On the other hand, when $A\ll L^4$, the principal eigenvalue behaves like ${\bar σ(A)}/L^2$, where $\bar σ(A) \approx \sqrt{A} I$ is the effective diffusion matrix. A similar transition is observed for the solution of the exit time problem. The proof in the homogenization regime involves bounds on the second correctors. Miraculously, if the slow profile is quadratic, these estimates can be obtained using drift independent $L^p \to L^\infty$ estimates for elliptic equations with an incompressible drift. This provides effective sub and super-solutions for our problem.

In this paper we consider an additive functional of an observable $V(x)$ of a Markov jump process. We assume that the law of the expected jump time $t(x)$ under the invariant probability measure $π$ of the skeleton chain belongs to the domain of attraction of a subordinator. Then, the scaled limit of the functional is a Mittag-Leffler proces, provided that $Ψ(x):=V(x)t(x)$ is square integrable w.r.t. $π$. When the law of $Ψ(x)$ belongs to a domain of attraction of a stable law the resulting process can be described by a composition of a stable process and the inverse of a subordinator and these processes are not necessarily independent. On the other hand when the singularities of $Ψ(x)$ and $t(x)$ do not overlap with large probability the law of the resulting process has some scaling invariance property. We provide an application of the results to a process that arises in quantum transport theory.

We formulate a criterion for the existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure for a Markov process taking values in a Polish phase space. In addition, weak-$^*$ ergodicity, that is, the weak convergence of the ergodic averages of the laws of the process starting from any initial distribution, is established. The principal assumptions are the existence of a lower bound for the ergodic averages of the transition probability function and its local uniform continuity. The latter is called the e-property. The general result is applied to solutions of some stochastic evolution equations in Hilbert spaces. As an example, we consider an evolution equation whose solution describes the Lagrangian observations of the velocity field in the passive tracer model. The weak-$^*$ mean ergodicity of the corresponding invariant measure is used to derive the law of large numbers for the trajectory of a tracer.

We find sufficient conditions on the probability transition to prove convergence in law of $N^{1/α}\sum_n^N Ψ(X_n)$ to a $α$-stable law. ``Martingale approximation'' approach and ``coupling'' approach give two different sets of conditions. We extend these results to continuous time Markov jump processes $X_t$, whose skeleton chain satisfies our assumptions. If waiting time between jumps has finite expectation, we prove convergence of $N^{-1/α}\int_0^{Nt} V(X_s) ds$ to a stable process. In the case of waiting times with infinite average, we prove convergence to a Mittag-Leffler process.

Abstract:
We consider the movement of a particle advected by a random flow of the form $\vv+δ\bF(\vx)$, with $\vv\in\R^d$ a constant drift, $\bF(\vx)$ -- the fluctuation -- given by a zero mean, stationary random field and $δ\ll 1$ so that the drift dominates over the fluctuation. The two-point correlation matrix $\bR(\vx)$ of the random field decays as $|\vx|^{2α-2}$, as $|\vx|\to+\infty$ with $α<1$. The…

The Kubo formula for the effective diffusion coefficient obtained in \cite{kp79} for rapidly decorrelating fields diverges when $1/2\leα<1$. We show formally that on the time scale $δ^{-1/α}$ the deviation of the trajectory from its mean $\by(t)=\vx(t)-\vv t$ converges to a fractional Brownian motion $B_α(t)$ in this range of the exponent $α$. We also prove rigorously upper and lower bounds which show that $\E[|\by(t)|^2]$ converges to zero for times $t\llδ^{-1/α}$ and to infinity on time scales $t\gg δ^{-1/α}$ as $δ\to 0$ when $α\in(1/2,1)$. On the other hand, when $α<1/2$ non-trivial behavior is observed on the time-scale $O(δ^{-2})$.
