Abstract: The Spin Physics Detector collaboration proposes to install a universal detector in the second interaction point of the NICA collider under construction (JINR, Dubna) to study the spin structure of the proton and deuteron and other spin-related phenomena using a unique possibility to operate with polarized proton and deuteron beams at a collision energy up to 27 GeV and a luminosity up to… ▽ More The Spin Physics Detector collaboration proposes to install a universal detector in the second interaction point of the NICA collider under construction (JINR, Dubna) to study the spin structure of the proton and deuteron and other spin-related phenomena using a unique possibility to operate with polarized proton and deuteron beams at a collision energy up to 27 GeV and a luminosity up to $10^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. As the main goal, the experiment aims to provide access to the gluon TMD PDFs in the proton and deuteron, as well as the gluon transversity distribution and tensor PDFs in the deuteron, via the measurement of specific single and double spin asymmetries using different complementary probes such as charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. Other polarized and unpolarized physics is possible, especially at the first stage of NICA operation with reduced luminosity and collision energy of the proton and ion beams. Is it possible to simulate the cosmological stage of the nucleon mass generation?

Resonant behavior of the $pp \to \{pp\}_s π^0$ reaction at the energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.65 GeV

Abstract: We report on measurements of the differential cross section $dσ/dΩ$ in the energy region of $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.5-2.9 GeV of the reaction $pp \to \{pp\}_s π^0$ where $\{pp\}_s$ is a $^1\!S_0$ proton pair. The experiment has been performed with the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Jülich. The data reveal a peak in the energy dependence of the forward $\{pp\}_s$ differential cross section at the energy… ▽ More We report on measurements of the differential cross section $dσ/dΩ$ in the energy region of $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.5-2.9 GeV of the reaction $pp \to \{pp\}_s π^0$ where $\{pp\}_s$ is a $^1\!S_0$ proton pair. Total and differential cross sections of the $\boldsymbol{dp\to {}^3}\textrm{He}\,\boldsymbolη$ reaction at excess energies between 1 and 15 MeV

Abstract: New high precision total and differential cross sections are reported for the $dp\to {}^3\textrm{He}\,η$ reaction close to threshold. The measurements were performed using the magnetic spectrometer ANKE, which is an internal fixed target facility at the COSY cooler synchrotron. The data were taken for deuteron beam momenta between $3.14641~\textrm{GeV}/c$ and $3.20416~\textrm{GeV}/c$, which corres… ▽ More New high precision total and differential cross sections are reported for the $dp\to {}^3\textrm{He}\,η$ reaction close to threshold. The measurements were performed using the magnetic spectrometer ANKE, which is an internal fixed target facility at the COSY cooler synchrotron. The data were taken for deuteron beam momenta between $3.14641~\textrm{GeV}/c$ and $3.20416~\textrm{GeV}/c$, which corresponds to the range in excess energy $Q$ for this reaction between $1.14~\textrm{MeV}$ and $15.01~\textrm{MeV}$. The normalization was established through the measurement in parallel of deuteron-proton elastic scattering and this was checked through the study of the $dp\to {}^3\textrm{He}\,π^0$ reaction. The previously indicated possible change of sign of the slope of the differential cross sections near the production threshold, which could be explained by a rapid variation of the $s$- and $p$-wave interference term, is not confirmed by the new data. The energy dependence of the total cross section and the $90^{\circ}$ slope parameter are well explained by describing the final state interaction in terms of a complex Jost function and the results are significant in the discussion of $η$-mesic nuclei. In combination with recently published WASA-at-COSY data [P. Adlarson $et\, al.$, Phys. Lett. B 782, 297 (2018)], a smooth variation of the slope parameter is achieved up to an excess energy of $80.9~\textrm{MeV}$. △ Less

Resonance-like coherent production of a pion pair in the reaction $pd \rightarrow pdππ$ in the GeV region

The proton-deuteron pairs emerging with high momenta, 0.6-1.8 GeV/$c$, were detected at small angles with respect to the proton beam. On the possibility of revealing the transition of a baryon pair state to a six-quark confinement state

Coherent pion production in proton-deuteron collisions

Abstract: Values of the proton analysing power in the $pd\to{}^{3}\textrm{He}\,π^0/^{3}\textrm{H}\,π^+$ reactions at 350-360~MeV per nucleon were obtained by using a polarised proton beam incident on a deuterium cluster-jet target and with a polarised deuteron beam incident on a target cell filled with polarised hydrogen. These results have a much larger angular coverage than existing data. First measuremen… ▽ More Values of the proton analysing power in the $pd\to{}^{3}\textrm{He}\,π^0/^{3}\textrm{H}\,π^+$ reactions at 350-360~MeV per nucleon were obtained by using a polarised proton beam incident on a deuterium cluster-jet target and with a polarised deuteron beam incident on a target cell filled with polarised hydrogen. These results have a much larger angular coverage than existing data. First measurements are also presented of the deuteron vector analysing power and the deuteron-proton spin correlations. Data were also obtained on the deuteron-proton spin correlation and proton analysing power at small angles at 600~MeV per nucleon, though the angular coverage at this energy was much more restricted even when using a deuteron beam. Suppression of thermal conduction in a mirror-unstable plasma

Abstract: The ICM plasma is subject to firehose and mirror instabilities at scales of order the ion Larmor radius. The mirror instability generates fluctuations of magnetic-field strength $δB / B \sim 1$. These fluctuations act as magnetic traps for the heat-conducting electrons, suppressing their transport. We calculate the effective parallel thermal conductivity in the ICM in the presence of the mirror fl… ▽ More The ICM plasma is subject to firehose and mirror instabilities at scales of order the ion Larmor radius. The mirror instability generates fluctuations of magnetic-field strength $δB / B \sim 1$. These fluctuations act as magnetic traps for the heat-conducting electrons, suppressing their transport. We calculate the effective parallel thermal conductivity in the ICM in the presence of the mirror fluctuations for different stages of the evolution of the instability. The mirror fluctuations are limited in amplitude by the maximum and minimum values of the field strength, with no large deviations from the mean value. This key property leads to a finite suppression of thermal conduction at large scales. We find suppression down to $\approx 0.2$ of the Spitzer value for the secular phase of the perturbations' growth, and $\approx 0.3$ for their saturated phase. The effect operates in addition to other suppression mechanisms and independently of them. Globally, fluctuations $δB / B \sim 1$ can be present on much larger scales, of the order of the scale of turbulent motions. However, we do not expect large suppression of thermal conduction by these, because their scale is considerably larger than the collisional mean free path of the ICM electrons. The obtained suppression of thermal conduction by a factor of $\sim 5$ appears to be characteristic and potentially universal for a weakly collisional mirror-unstable plasma. △ Less

Abstract: The charge exchange of vector polarised deuterons on a polarised hydrogen target has been studied in a high statistics experiment at the COSY-ANKE facility at a deuteron beam energy of Td = 726 MeV. An impulse approximation calculation, which takes into account corrections due to the angular distribution in the diproton, describes reasonably the dependence of the data on both E_{pp} and the momentum transfer. Values of the differential cross section and two deuteron tensor analysing powers, A_{xx} and A_{yy}, have been extracted in terms of the momentum transfer to the diproton or the invariant mass Mx of the unobserved system X. The unpolarised cross section in the high Mx region is well described in a model that includes only direct excitation of the Delta isobar through undistorted one pion exchange. However, the cross section is grossly underestimated for low Mx, even when Delta excitation in the projectile deuteron is included in the calculation. Furthermore, direct Delta production through one pion exchange only reproduces the angular dependence of the difference between the two tensor analysing powers. △ Less

The proton analyzing power in this reaction was also deduced from this data set by averaging over the polarization of the deuteron beam. The values of A_y^p were shown to be consistent with a refined analysis of our earlier results obtained with a polarized proton incident on a deuterium target. Taking these data in combination with our earlier measurements of the differential cross sections and analyzing powers in the pol{p} p -> {pp}_s pi^0 reaction, a more robust partial wave decomposition was achieved. Three different acceptable solutions were found and the only way of resolving this ambiguity without further theoretical input would be through a measurement of the mixed spin-correlation parameter A_{x,z}. △ Less

Using deuteron beams with energies 1.2, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.27 GeV, data were obtained for small momentum transfers to a (pp) system with low excitation energy. The results at the three lower energies are consistent with impulse approximation predictions based upon the current knowledge of the neutron-proton amplitudes. However, at 2.27GeV, where these amplitudes are far more uncertain, agreement requires a reduction in the overall double-spin-flip contribution, with an especially significant effect in the longitudinal direction. These conclusions are supported by measurements of the deuteron-proton spin-correlation parameters C_{x,x} and C_{y,y} that were carried out in the pol{d}pol{p} -> (pp)n reaction at 1.2 and 2.27GeV. The values obtained for the proton analysing power also suggest the need for a radical re-evaluation of the neutron-proton elastic scattering amplitudes at the higher energy. It is therefore clear that such measurements can provide a valuable addition to the neutron-proton database in the charge-exchange region. △ Less

Abstract: Properties of the orbitally excited (L=1) $B_s$ states are studied using 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =7$ TeV collected with the LHCb detector. The first observation of the $B_{s2}^*(5840)^0$ meson decaying to $B^{*+} K^-$ is reported, and the corresponding branching fraction measured relative to the $B^+ K^-$ decay mode. The $B_{s1}(5830)^0 \to B^{*+} K^-$ decay is observed as well… ▽ More Properties of the orbitally excited (L=1) $B_s$ states are studied using 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =7$ TeV collected with the LHCb detector. The first observation of the $B_{s2}^*(5840)^0$ meson decaying to $B^{*+} K^-$ is reported, and the corresponding branching fraction measured relative to the $B^+ K^-$ decay mode. The $B_{s1}(5830)^0 \to B^{*+} K^-$ decay is observed as well. The width of the $B_{s2}^*(5840)^0$ state is measured for the first time and the masses of the two states are determined with the highest precision to date. The observation of the $B_{s2}^*(5840)^0 \to B^{*+} K^-$ decay favours the spin-parity assignment $J^P = 2^+$ for the $B_{s2}^*(5840)^0$ meson. In addition, the most precise measurement of the mass difference $m(B^{*+})-m(B^+) = 45.01 \pm 0.30 (stat) \pm 0.23 (syst)$ MeV/$c^2$ is obtained. △ Less

First evidence for the decay Bs -> mu+ mu-

Abstract: A search for the rare decays Bs->mu+mu- and B0->mu+mu- is performed using data collected in 2011 and 2012 with the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The data samples comprise 1.1 fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 8 TeV and 1.0 fb^-1 at sqrt{s}=7 TeV. We observe an excess of Bs -> mu+ mu- candidates with respect to the background expectation. The probability that the backgr… ▽ More A search for the rare decays Bs->mu+mu- and B0->mu+mu- is performed using data collected in 2011 and 2012 with the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The data samples comprise 1.1 fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 8 TeV and 1.0 fb^-1 at sqrt{s}=7 TeV. We observe an excess of Bs -> mu+ mu- candidates with respect to the background expectation. The probability that the background could produce such an excess or larger is 5.3 x 10^-4 corresponding to a signal significance of 3.5 standard deviations. A maximum-likelihood fit gives a branching fraction of BR(Bs -> mu+ mu-) = (3.2^{+1.5}_{-1.2}) x 10^-9, where the statistical uncertainty is 95% of the total uncertainty. This result is in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. The observed number of B0 -> mu+ mu- candidates is consistent with the background expectation, giving an upper limit of BR(B0 -> mu+ mu-) < 9.4 x 10^-10 at 95% confidence level. △ Less

Abstract: A measurement of the inclusive $Z \to ττ$ cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV is presented based on a dataset of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb detector. Candidates for $Z \to ττ$ decays are identified through reconstructed final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. The values of the parameters are found to be $x_- = (0.0 \pm 4.3 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-2}$, $y_- = (2.7 \pm 5.2 \pm 0.8 \pm 2.3) \times 10^{-2}$, $x_+ = (-10.3 \pm 4.5 \pm 1.8 \pm 1.4)\times 10^{-2}$ and $y_+ = (-0.9 \pm 3.7 \pm 0.8 \pm 3.0)\times 10^{-2}$. The first, second, and third uncertainties are the statistical, the experimental systematic, and the error associated with the precision of the strong-phase parameters measured at CLEO-c, respectively. These results correspond to $γ= (44^{\,+43}_{\,-38})^\circ$, with a second solution at $γ\to γ+ 180^\circ$, and $r_B = 0.07 \pm 0.04$, where $r_B$ is the ratio between the suppressed and favoured B decay amplitudes. △ Less

Abstract: In order to establish links between p-wave pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions and low energy three-nucleon scattering, an extensive programme of experiments on pion production is currently underway at COSY-ANKE. Evidence for $πK$-atoms with DIRAC

Abstract: We present evidence for the first observation of electromagnetically bound $π^\pm K^\mp$-pairs ($πK$-atoms) with the DIRAC experiment at the CERN-PS. The $πK$-atoms are produced by the 24 GeV/c proton beam in a thin Pt-target and the $π^\pm$ and $K^\mp$-mesons from the atom dissociation are analyzed in a two-arm magnetic spectrometer. The $πK$-atoms are produced by the 24 GeV/c proton beam in a thin Pt-target and the $π^\pm$ and $K^\mp$-mesons from the atom dissociation are analyzed in a two-arm magnetic spectrometer. The observed enhancement at low relative momentum corresponds to the production of 173 $\pm$ 54 $πK$-atoms. The mean life of $πK$-atoms is related to the s-wave $πK$-scattering lengths, the measurement of which is the goal of the experiment. This is equivalent to photodisintegration of a free 1S_0 diproton for photon energies Eγ~ T_p/2. By selecting proton pairs with an excitation energy of less than 3 MeV it is ensured that the final {pp}_s system is in the 1S0 state. In the measured region of theta_{pp}^{cm} < 18 deg, the data reveal a forward dip for T_p =<… ▽ More The pp -> {pp}_s pi0 differential cross section has been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Juelich for seven proton beam energies T_p between 0.5 and 1.97 GeV. By selecting proton pairs with an excitation energy of less than 3 MeV it is ensured that the final {pp}_s system is in the 1S0 state. In the measured region of theta_{pp}^{cm} < 18 deg, the data reveal a forward dip for T_p =< 1.4 GeV whereas a forward peaking is seen at 1.97 GeV. The energy dependence of the forward cross section shows a broad peak in the 0.6-0.8 GeV region, probably associated with Delta(1232) excitation, and a minimum at 1.4 GeV. Some of these features are similar to those observed for the spin-isospin partner reaction, pp -> d pi+. However, the ratio of the forward differential cross sections of the two reactions shows a significant suppression of single pion production associated with a spin--singlet final nucleon pair. △ Less

Nonperturbative equation of state of quark-gluon plasma. Applications

Abstract: The vacuum-driven nonperturbative factors $L_i$ for quark and gluon Green's functions are shown to define the nonperturbative dynamics of QGP in the leading approximation. EoS obtained recently in the framework of this approach is compared in detail with known lattice data for $μ=0$ including $P/T^4$, $ε/T^4$, $\frac{ε-3P}{T^4}$. Resulting curves for $P/T^4$, $ε/T^4$, $\frac{ε-3P}{T^4}$ are in a reasonable agreement with lattice data, the remaining difference points out to an effective attraction among QGP constituents. △ Less
