We revisit the modal analysis of small perturbations in Keplerian ideal gas flows leading to magneto-rotational instability (MRI) using the non-local approach. We consider the case of constant vertical background magnetic field, as well as the case of radially dependent background Alfvén velocity. In the case of constant Alfvén velocity, MRI modes are described by a Schrödinger-like differential equation with some effective potential including 'repulsive' ($1/r^2$) and 'attractive' ($-1/r^3$) terms. Taking into account the radial dependence of the background Alfvén speed leads to a qualitative change in the shape of the effective potential. It is shown that there are no stationary energy levels corresponding to unstable modes $ω^2 < 0$ in ``shallow'' potentials. In thin accretion disks, the wavelength of the disturbance $λ=2π/k_z$ is smaller than the half-thickness $h$ of the disk only in ``deep'' potentials. The limiting value of the background Alfvén speed $(c_A)_\mathrm{cr}$, above which the magnetorotational instability does not occur, is found. In thin accretion disks with low background Alfvén speed $c_A\ll (c_A)_\mathrm{cr}$, the increment of the magnetorotational instability $ω\approx -\sqrt{3}\mathrm{i}c_Ak_z$ is suppressed compared to the value obtained in the local perturbation analysis.

Her X-1/HZ Her is one of the best studied accreting X-ray pulsars. In addition to the pulsating and orbital periods, the X-ray and optical light curves of the source exhibit an almost periodic 35-day variability caused by a precessing accretion disk. The nature of the observed long-term stability of the 35-day cycle has been debatable. The X-ray pulse frequency of Her X-1 measured by the Fermi/GBM demonstrates periodical variations with X-ray flux at the Main-on state of the source. We explain the observed periodic sub-microsecond pulse frequency changes by the free precession of a triaxial neutron star with parameters previously inferred from an independent analysis of the X-ray pulse evolution over the 35-day cycle. In the Fermi/GBM data, we identified several time intervals with a duration of half a year or longer where the neutron star precession period describing the pulse frequency variations does not change. We found that the NS precession period varies within one per cent in different intervals. Such variations in the free precession period on a year time scale can be explained by <1% changes in the fractional difference between the triaxial neutron star's moments of inertia due to the accreted mass readjustment or variable internal coupling of the neutron star crust with the core.

We present a model of a viscously evolving accretion disc around a magnetized neutron star. The model features the varying outer radius of the hot ionized part of the disc due to cooling and the varying inner radius of the disc due to interaction with the magnetosphere. It also includes hindering of accretion on the neutron star because of the centrifugal barrier and irradiation of the outer disc and companion star by X-rays from the neutron star and disc. When setting inner boundary conditions, we take into account that processes at the inner disc occur on a time scale much less than the viscous time scale of the whole disc. We consider three types of outflow from the disc inner edge: zero outflow, one based on MHD calculations, and a very efficient propeller mechanism. The light curves of an X-ray transient after the outburst peak can be calculated by a corresponding, publicly available code. We compare observed light curves of the 2013 burst of Aql X-1 in X-ray and optical bands with modeled ones. We find that the fast drop of the $0.3-10$ keV flux can be solely explained by a radial shrinking of the hot disc. At the same time, models with the neutron star magnetic field $>10^8$ G have better fits because the accretion efficiency behaviour emphasizes the 'knee' on the light curve. We also find that a plato emission can be produced by a disc-reservoir with stalled accretion.

eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) instrument onboard the Russian-German `Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma' (SRG) mission observed the Her X-1/HZ Her binary system in multiple scans over the source during the first and second SRG all-sky surveys. Both observations occurred during a low state of the X-ray source when the outer parts of the accretion disk blocked the neutron star from view. The orbital modulation of the X-ray flux was detected during the low states. We argue that the detected X-ray radiation results from scattering of the emission of the central source by three distinct regions: (a) an optically thin hot corona with temperature $\sim (2-4) \times 10^6$ K above the irradiated hemisphere of the optical star; (b) an optically thin hot halo above the accretion disk; and (c) the optically thick cold atmosphere of the optical star. The latter region effectively scatters photons with energies above $5-6$ keV.

We argue that the observed features of the 35-day optical variability of HZ Her can be explained by free precession of the neutron star with a period close to that of the forced disk. The model parameters include a) the X-ray luminosity of the neutron star; b) the optical flux from the accretion disk; c) the tilt of the inner and outer edges of the accretion disk. A possible synchronization mechanism based on the coupling between the neutron star free precession and the dynamical action of non-stationary gas streams is discussed.

For the finite temperatures in the variable-range hop** transport regime the interpretation of numerical results leads to the appearance of local minima and maxima of the resistance near the energies of the localized states. Rotating proto-neutron stars can be important sources of gravitational waves to be searched for by present-day and future interferometric detectors. It was demonstrated by Imshennik that in extreme cases the rapid rotation of a collapsing stellar core may lead to fission and formation of a binary proto-neutron star which subsequently merges due to gravitational wave emission. In the present paper, we show that such dynamically unstable collapsing stellar cores may be the product of a former merger process of two stellar cores in a common envelope. We applied population synthesis calculations to assess the expected fraction of such rapidly rotating stellar cores which may lead to fission and formation of a pair of proto-neutron stars. We have used the BSE population synthesis code supplemented with a new treatment of stellar core rotation during the evolution via effective core-envelope coupling, characterized by the coupling time, $τ_c$. The validity of this approach is checked by direct MESA calculations of the evolution of a rotating 15 $M_\odot$ star. From comparison of the calculated spin distribution of young neutron stars with the observed one, reported by Popov and Turolla, we infer the value $τ_c \simeq 5 \times 10^5$ years. We show that merging of stellar cores in common envelopes can lead to collapses with dynamically unstable proto-neutron stars, with their formation rate being $\sim 0.1-1\%$ of the total core collapses, depending on the common envelope efficiency.

The electron-phonon interaction is taken into account in the framework of the Hubbard-Holstein model with the use of the Lang-Firsov unitary transformation scheme. The electron transmission function, the thermopower and the thermoelectric figure of merit are calculated. We have found that the electron-phonon interaction causes a decrease in the peak values of the thermoelectric figure of merit and the shift of the peak positions closer to the center of the bandgap. The effects are more pronounced for the secondary peaks that appear in the structures with periodic antidot.

The influence of periodic edge vacancies and antidot arrays on the thermoelectric properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons is investigated. Using the Green's function method, the tight-binding approximation for the electron Hamiltonian and the 4th nearest neighbor approximation for the phonon dynamical matrix, we calculate the Seebeck coefficient and the thermoelectric figure of merit. It is found that, at a certain periodic arrangement of vacancies on both edges of zigzag nanoribbon, a finite band gap opens and almost twofold degenerate energy levels appear. As a result, a marked increase in the Seebeck coefficient takes place. It is shown that an additional enhancement of the thermoelectric figure of merit can be achieved by a combination of periodic edge defects with an antidot array.

Due to popularity surge social networks became lucrative targets for spammers and guerilla marketers, who are trying to game ranking systems and broadcast their messages at little to none cost. Ranking systems, for example Twitter's Trends, can be gamed by scripted users also called bots, who are automatically or semi-automatically twitting essentially the same message. Judging by the prices and abundance of supply from PR firms this is an easy to implement and widely used tactic, at least in Russian blogosphere. Aggregative analysis of social networks should at best mark those messages as spam or at least correctly downplay their importance as they represent opinions only of a few, if dedicated, users. Hence bot detection plays a crucial role in social network mining and analysis. In this paper we propose technique called RepRank which could be viewed as Markov chain based model for reputation propagation on graphs utilizing simultaneous trust and anti-trust propagation and provide effective numerical approach for its computation. Comparison with another models such as TrustRank and some of its modifications on sample of 320000 Russian speaking Twitter users is presented. The dataset is presented as well.

The low-energy electronic structure of icosahedral fullerenes is studied within the field-theory model. In the field model, the pentagonal rings in the fullerene are simulated by two kinds of gauge fields. The first one, non-abelian field, follows from so-called K spin rotation invariance for the spinor field while the second one describes the elastic flow due to pentagonal apical disclinations. For fullerene molecule, these fluxes are taken into account by introducing an effective field due to magnetic monopole placed at the center of a sphere. Additionally, the spherical geometry of the fullerene is incorporated via the spin connection term. The exact analytical solution of the problem (both for the eigenfunctions and the energy spectrum) is found.
