We study spherically symmetric static solutions of the most general sixth-derivative gravity using series expansions. Specifically, we prove that the only solutions of the complete theory (i.e., with generic coupling constants) that possess a Frobenius expansion around the origin, $r=0$, are necessarily regular. When restricted to specific branches of theories (i.e., imposing particular constraints on the coupling constants), families of potentially singular solutions emerge. By expanding around $r=r_0 \neq 0$, we identify solutions with black-hole horizons. Finally, we argue that, unlike in fourth-derivative gravity, the conditions $R=0$ and $g_{tt}g_{rr}=-1$ are too restrictive for sixth-derivative gravity solutions.

In this paper, we obtain a complete list of stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes, generated from a Minkowski spacetime using the Ernst technique. We do so by operating on the associated seed potentials with a composition of Ehlers and Harrison transformations. In particular, assigning an additional ``electric'' or ``magnetic'' tag to the transformations, we investigate the new spacetimes obtained either via a composition of magnetic Ehlers and Harrison transformations (first part) or via a magnetic-electric combination (second part). In the first part, the resulting type D spacetime, dubbed electromagnetic swirling universe, features key properties, separately found in swirling and (Bonnor--)Melvin spacetimes, the latter recovered in appropriate limits. A detailed analysis of the geometry is included, and subtle issues are addressed. A detailed proof that the spacetime belongs to the Kundt family, is included, and a notable relation to the planar-Reissner-Nordström-NUT black hole is also meticulously worked out. This relation is further exploited to reverse-engineer the form of the solution in the presence of a nontrivial cosmological constant. A Schwarzschild black hole embedded into the new background is also discussed. In the second part, we present four novel stationary and axisymmetric asymptotically nonflat type I spacetimes, which are naively expected to be extensions of the Melvin or swirling solution including a NUT parameter or electromagnetic charges. We actually find that they are, under conditions, free of curvature and topological singularities, with the physical meaning of the electric transformation parameters in these backgrounds requiring further investigation.

We show that the seemingly different methods used to derive non-Lorentzian (Galilean and Carrollian) gravitational theories from Lorentzian ones are equivalent. Specifically, the pre-nonrelativistic and the pre-ultralocal parametrizations can be constructed from the gauging of the Galilei and Carroll algebras, respectively. Also, the pre-ultralocal approach of taking the Carrollian limit is equivalent to performing the ADM decomposition and then setting the signature of the Lorentzian manifold to zero. We use this uniqueness to write a generic expansion for the curvature tensors and construct Galilean and Carrollian limits of all metric theories of gravity of finite order ranging from the $f(R)$ gravity to a completely generic higher derivative theory, the $f(g_{μν},R_{μνσρ},\nabla_μ)$ gravity. We present an algorithm for calculation of the $n$-th order of the Galilean and Carrollian expansions that transforms this problem into a constrained optimization problem. We also derive the condition under which a gravitational theory becomes a modification of general relativity in both limits simultaneously.

We find exact solutions of topologically massive gravity (TMG) and new massive gravity (NMG) in ${2+1}$ dimensions (3D) with an arbitrary cosmological constant, pure radiation, and gyratons, i.e., with possibly non-zero $T_{uu}$ and $T_{ux}$ in canonical coordinates. Since any `reasonable' geometry in 3D (i.e., admitting a null geodesic congruence) is either expanding Robinson-Trautman ($Θ\neq 0$) or Kundt (${Θ=0}$), we focus on these two classes. Assuming expansions ${Θ=1/r}$ (`GR-like' Robinson-Trautman) or ${Θ=0}$ (general Kundt), we systematically integrate the field equations of TMG and NMG and identify new classes of exact solutions. The case of NMG contains an additional assumption of $g_{ux}$ being quadratic in $r$, which is automatically enforced in TMG as well as in 3D GR. In each case, we reduce the field equations as much as possible and identify new classes of solutions. We also discuss various special subclasses and study some explicit solutions.

We study the Carrollian limit of the (general) quadratic gravity in four dimensions. We find that in order for the Carrollian theory to be a modification of the Carrollian limit of general relativity, the parameters in the action must depend on the speed of light in a specific way. By focusing on the leading and the next-to-leading orders in the Carrollian expansion, we show that there are four such non equivalent Carrollian theories. Imposing conditions to remove tachyons (from the linearized theory), we end up with a classification of Carrollian theories according to the leading-order and next-to-leading-order actions. All modify the Carrollian limit of general relativity with quartic terms of the extrinsic curvature. To the leading order, we show that two theories are equivalent to general relativity, one to $R+R^2$ theory, and one to the general quadratic gravity. To the next-to-leading order, two are equivalent to $R+R^2$ while the other two to the general quadratic gravity. We study the two theories that are equivalent to $R+R^2$ to the leading order and write their magnetic limit actions.

We present a new covariant method of construction of the (position space) propagators in the $N$-dimensional (Euclidean) anti-de Sitter background for any gravitational theory with the Lagrangian that is an analytic expression in the metric, curvature, and covariant derivative. We show that the propagators (in Landau gauge) for all such theories can be expressed using the heat kernels for scalars and symmetric transverse-traceless rank-2 tensors on the hyperbolic $N$-space. The latter heat kernels are constructed explicitly and shown to be directly related to the former if an improved bi-scalar representation is used. Our heat kernel approach is first tested on general relativity, where we find equivalent forms of the propagators. Then it is used to obtain explicit expressions for propagators for various higher-derivative as well as infinite-derivative/nonlocal theories of gravity. As a by-product, we also provide a new derivation of the equivalent action (correcting a mistake in the original derivation) and an extension of the quadratic action to arbitrary ${N\geq 3}$ dimensions.

We explicitly demonstrate that the nonlocal ghost-free ultraviolet modification of general relativity (GR) known as the infinite derivative gravity (IDG) resolves nonscalar curvature singularities in exact solutions of the full theory. We analyze exact pp-wave solutions of GR and IDG describing gravitational waves generated by null radiation. Curvature of GR and IDG solutions with the same energy-momentum tensor is compared in parallel-propagated frames along timelike and null geodesics at finite values of the affine parameter. While the GR pp-wave solution contains a physically problematic nonscalar curvature singularity at the location of the source, the curvature of its IDG counterpart is finite.

We present the ghost-free infinite-derivative extensions of the Spherically-Reduced Gravity (SRG) and Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger (CGHS) theories in two space-time dimensions. For the case of SRG, we specify the Schwarzschild-type gauge and diagonalise the quadratic action for field perturbations after taking the background fields to be those of the flat-space solution with a linear dilaton. Using the obtained diagonalisation, we construct ghost-free infinite-derivative modifications of the SRG theory. In the context of this modified SRG theory we derive a non-local modification of the linearised spherically-reduced Schwarzschild solution. For the case of CGHS gravity, we work in the conformal gauge and diagonalise the quadratic action associated with this theory for a general background solution. Using these results, we construct the ghost-free infinite-derivative modifications of the CGHS theory and examine non-local modifications to the linearised CGHS black-hole solution.

To achieve it, we use the theory of generalized functions and the Fourier transform in the space of tempered distributions $\mathcal{S}^\prime$. We show that the non-local operator domain is not defined on the whole functional space but on a subset of it. Moreover, we prove that these functions and their derivatives are bounded in all $\mathbb{R}^3$ and, consequently, the Riemann tensor is regular and the scalar curvature invariants do not present any spacetime singularity. Finally, we explore what conditions we need to satisfy so that the solutions of the linearized equations of motion exist in $\mathcal{S}^\prime$.

We present a new bouncing cosmological solution of the non-local theory known as infinite derivative gravity, which goes beyond the recursive ansatz, ${\Box R = r_1 R +r_2}$. The non-local field equations are evaluated using the spectral decomposition with respect to the eigenfunctions of the wave operator. The energy-momentum tensor computed for this geometry turns out to be much more sensitive to the choice of the non-local form-factor, since it depends on the value of the function on a continuous infinite interval. We show that this stronger dependence on the form-factor allows us to source the geometry by the perfect fluid with the non-negative energy density satisfying the strong energy condition. We show that this bouncing behaviour is not possible in the local theories of gravity such as in general relativity or $R+R^2$ gravity sourced by a fluid which meets the non-negative energy and strong energy conditions.

In particular, we show that the properties of pp-waves of the algebraic type III allow for extreme simplification of the field equations. It turns out that the resulting differential equations are exactly solvable due to partial decoupling and linearity of the equations. We study exact solutions of the infinite derivative gravity with null radiation which belong to the class of almost universal Weyl type III/N Kundt spacetimes. This class is defined by the property that all rank-2 tensors ${B_{ab}}$ constructed from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives have traceless part of type N of the form $\mathcal{B}(\square)S_{ab}$ and the trace part constantly proportional to the metric. Here, $\mathcal{B}(\square)$ is an analytic operator and $S_{ab}$ is the traceless Ricci tensor. We show that the convoluted field equations reduce to a single non-local but linear equation, which contains only the Laplace operator $\triangle$ on 2-dimensional spaces of constant curvature. Such a non-local linear equation is always exactly solvable by eigenfunction expansion or using the heat kernel method for the non-local form-factor $\exp(-\ell^2\triangle)$ (with $\ell$ being the length scale of non-locality) as we demonstrate on several examples. We find the non-local analogues of the Aichelburg--Sexl and the Hotta--Tanaka solutions, which describe gravitational waves generated by null sources propagating in Minkowski, de Sitter, and anti-de Sitter spacetimes. They reduce to the solutions of the local theory far from the sources or in the local limit, ${\ell\to0}$. In the limit ${\ell\to\infty}$, they become conformally flat. We also discuss possible hints suggesting that the non-local solutions are regular at the locations of the sources in contrast to the local solutions; all curvature components in the natural null frame are finite and specifically the Weyl components vanish.

The junction conditions for the infinite derivative gravity theory ${R{+}RF(\Box)R}$ are derived under the assumption that the conditions can be imposed by avoiding the `ill-defined expressions' in the theory of distributions term by term in infinite summations. We find that the junction conditions of such non-local theories are much more restrictive than in local theories, since the conditions comprise an infinite number of equations for the Ricci scalar. These conditions can constrain the geometry far beyond the matching hypersurface. Furthermore, we derive the junction field equations which are satisfied by the energy-momentum on the hypersurface. It turns out that the theory still allows some matter content on the hypersurface (without external flux and external tension), but with a traceless energy-momentum tensor. We also discuss the proper matching condition where no matter is concentrated on the hypersurface. Finally, we explore the possible applications and consequences of our results to the braneworld scenarios and star models. Particularly, we find that the internal tension is given purely by the trace of the energy-momentum tensor of the matter confined to the brane. Consequences of the junction conditions are illustrated on two simple examples of static and collapsing stars. It is demonstrated that even without solving the field equations the geometry on one side of the hypersurface can be determined to a great extent by the geometry on the other side if the Ricci scalar is analytic. We further show that some usual star models in the general relativity are no longer solutions of the infinite derivative gravity.

In the absence of NUTs, the solution reduces to a well known Kerr-(A)dS black hole with several rotations switched off. New geometries inherit the original symmetry of the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS family, namely, they possess the full Killing tower of hidden and explicit symmetries. As expected, for vanishing NUT, twist, and deformation parameters, the symmetry is further enlarged.

Abstract:
We study spacetimes that lead to a separable Klein-Gordon equation in a general dimension. We introduce an ansatz for the metric in higher dimensions motivated by analogical work by Carter in four dimensions and find solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation. For such a metric we solve the Einstein equations and regain the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime as one of our results. Other solutions lead to the Ei…

Other solutions lead to the Einstein-Kähler metric of a Euclidean signature. Next we investigate a warped geometry of two Klein-Gordon separable spaces with a properly chosen warped factor. We show that the resulting metric leads also to a separable Klein--Gordon equation and we find the corresponding solutions. Finally, we solve the Einstein equations for the warped geometry and obtain new solutions.

Abstract:
We formulate several criteria under which the symmetries associated with the Killing and Killing-Yano tensors on the base space can be lifted to the symmetries of the full warped geometry. The procedure is explicitly illustrated on several examples, providing new prototypes of spacetimes admitting such tensors. In particular, we study a warped product of two Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes and show that…

The procedure is explicitly illustrated on several examples, providing new prototypes of spacetimes admitting such tensors. In particular, we study a warped product of two Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes and show that it gives rise to a new class of highly symmetric vacuum (with cosmological constant) black hole solutions that inherit many of the properties of the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS geometry.

We investigate properties of higher-dimensional generally rotating black-hole spacetimes, so called Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes, as well as a family of related spaces which share the same explicit and hidden symmetries. In these spaces, we study a particle motion in the presence of a weak electromagnetic field and compare it with its operator analogies. First, we find general commutativity conditions for classical observables and for their operator counterparts, then we investigate a fulfillment of these conditions in the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS and related spaces. We find the most general form of the weak electromagnetic field compatible with the complete integrability of the particle motion and the comutativity of the field operators. For such a field we solve the charged Hamilton-Jacobi and Klein-Gordon equations by separation of variables.

Abstract:
We first generalize the operation of formal exterior differential in the case of finite dimensional fibered manifolds and then we extend it to certain bundles of smooth maps. In order to characterize the operator order of some morphisms between our bundles of smooth maps, we introduce the concept of fiberwise $(k,r)$-jet. Functorial prolongations of some functional bundles

Abstract:
We discuss two kinds of functorial prolongations of the functional bundle of all smooth maps between the fibers over the same base point of two fibered manifolds over the same base. We study the prolongation of vector fields in both cases and we prove that the bracket is preserved. Our proof is based on several new results concerning the finite dimensional Weil bundles.
