We construct a time-asymptotic expansion with pointwise remainder estimates for solutions to 1D compressible Navier--Stokes equations. The leading-order term is the well-known diffusion wave and the higher-order terms are newly introduced family of waves which we call \textit{higher-order diffusion waves}. In particular, these provide accurate description of the power-law asymptotics of the solution around the origin $x=0$ where the diffusion wave decays exponentially. The expansion is valid locally and also globally in the $L^p(\mathbb{R})$-norm for all $1\leq p\leq \infty$. The proof is based on pointwise estimates of Green's function.

This result extends author's previous works on the long-time behavior of a \textit{single} point particle. New difficulties arise in the derivation of pointwise estimates of Green's functions due to infinite reflections of waves in-between the point particles. In particular, the differential equation technique used in previous works alone does not suffice. We overcome this by carefully analyzing the structure of Green's functions in the Laplace variable, especially their asymptotic and analyticity properties.

Refined pointwise estimates for solutions to the 1D barotropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations: An application to the long-time behavior of a point mass

This result was obtained as a corollary to pointwise estimates of solutions to a free boundary problem of barotropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations. In this paper, we give a simple necessary and sufficient condition on the initial data for the decay estimate $V(t)=O(t^{-3/2})$ to be optimal. This is achieved by refining the pointwise estimates previously obtained: we make use of \textit{inter-diffusion waves} that, together with the classical \textit{diffusion waves}, give an improved approximation of the fluid behavior around the point mass; this then leads to a sharper understanding of the long-time behavior of the point mass.

We consider the motion of a point mass in a one-dimensional viscous compressible barotropic fluid. The fluid--point mass system is governed by the barotropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations and Newton's equation of motion. Our main result concerns the long-time behavior of the fluid and the point mass, and it gives pointwise convergence estimates of the volume ratio and the velocity of the fluid to their equilibrium values. As a corollary, it is shown that the velocity $V(t)$ of the point mass satisfies a decay estimate $|V(t)|=O(t^{-3/2})$ --- a faster decay compared to $t^{-1/2}$ known for the motion of a point mass in the viscous Burgers fluid~[J.~L.~V{á}zquez and E.~Zuazua, Comm. Partial Differential Equations \textbf{28} (2003), 1705--1738]. The rate $-3/2$ is essentially related to the compressibility and the nonlinearity. As a consequence, it follows that the point mass is convected only a finite distance as opposed to the viscous Burgers case. The main tool used in the proof is the pointwise estimates of Green's function. It turns out that the understanding of the time-decay properties of the transmitted and reflected waves at the point mass is essential for the proof.

We have investigated microwave transmission through the edge of quantum Hall systems by employing a coplanar waveguide (CPW) fabricated on the surface of a GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) wafer. An edge is introduced to the slot region of the CPW by applying a negative bias $V_\mathrm{g}$ to the central electrode (CE) and depleting the 2DEG below the CE. We observe peaks attributable to the excitation of edge magnetoplasmons (EMP) at a fundamental frequency $f_0$ and at its harmonics $i f_0$ ($i$ = 2, 3,...). The frequency $f_0$ increases with decreasing $V_\mathrm{g}$, indicating that EMP propagates with higher velocity for more negative $V_\mathrm{g}$. The dependence of $f_0$ on $V_\mathrm{g}$ is interpreted in terms of the variation in the distance between the edge state and the CE, which alters the velocity by varying the capacitive coupling between them. The peaks are observed to continue, albeit with less clarity, up to the regions of $V_\mathrm{g}$ where 2DEG still remains below the CE.

The gas model is a special Lorentz gas consisting of gas molecules and background obstacles, which was introduced in~(Tsuji and Aoki: J. Stat. Phys. \textbf{146}, 620--645, 2012). The specular boundary condition is imposed on the resulting kinetic equation. This study complements the numerical study by Tsuji and Aoki cited above --- although the setting in this paper is slightly different from theirs, qualitatively the same asymptotic behavior is proved: The velocity $V(t)$ of the rigid body decays exponentially if the obstacles undergo thermal motion; if the obstacles are motionless, then the velocity $V(t)$ decays algebraically with a rate $t^{-5}$ independent of the spatial dimension. This demonstrates the idea that interaction of the molecules with the background obstacles destroy the memory effect due to recollision.

We show that the velocity $V(t)$ of the body approaches its terminal velocity $V_{\infty}$ according to a power law $V_{\infty}-V(t)\approx Ct^{-(d-1)}$ by carefully analyzing the pre-collisions due to the presence of the wall. The exponent $d-1$ is smaller than $d+2$ for the case without the wall found in the classical work by Caprino, Marchioro and Pulvirenti~[Comm. Math. Phys., \textbf{264} (2006), pp. 167--189] and thus slower convergence rate results from the presence of the wall.

The ceramic pellets of the nominal compositions Bi$_{0.7}$Ba$_{0.3}$Fe$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$O$_3$ (x = 0.00-0.20) were prepared initially by standard solid state reaction technique. The pellets were then ground into micrometer-sized powders and mixed with isopropanol in an ultrasonic bath to prepare nanoparticles. The X-ray diffraction patterns demonstrate the presence of a significant number of impurity phases in bulk powder materials. Interestingly, these secondary phases were completely removed due to the sonication of these bulk powder materials for 60 minutes. The field and temperature dependent magnetization measurements exhibited significant difference between the magnetic properties of the bulk materials and their corresponding nanoparticles. We anticipate that the large difference in the magnetic behavior may be associated with the presence and absence of secondary impurity phases in the bulk materials and their corresponding nanoparticles, respectively. The leakage current density of the bulk materials was also found to suppress in the ultrasonically prepared nanoparticles compared to that of bulk counterparts.

The line profile exhibited a dramatic change several weeks after the burst; the component on the higher-velocity side of the systemic velocity disappeared two weeks after the burst, and a new persistent component appeared on the lower-velocity side later. These observations indicate that the SiO emitting regions are wiped out in a time scale of two weeks by the nova shock, but a part of the masing region is quickly replenished by cool molecular gases expelled by the mira pulsation.

To study this motion in a much larger scale in the Galaxy, we newly surveyed 134 evolved stars off the Galactic plane by SiO maser lines, obtaining accurate radial velocities of 84 detected stars. Together with the past data of SiO maser sources, we analyzed the radial velocity data of a large sample of sources distributing in a distance range of about 0.3 -- 6 kpc in the first Galactic quadrant. At the Galactic longitudes between 20 and 40 deg, we found a group of stars with large negative radial velocities, which deviate by more than 100 km s^{-1} from the Galactic rotation. We show that these deviant motions of maser stars are created by periodic gravitational perturbation of the Bulge bar, and that the effect appears most strongly at radii between corotation and outer Lindblad resonances. The resonance effect can explain the displacement of positions from the Galactic plane as well.

We also detected 6 SiO emitting objects associated with the other star clusters. In addition, map** observations in the CO J=1--0 line toward these clusters revealed that an appreciable amount of molecular gas still remains around Stephenson's #2 cluster in contrast to the prototypical red-supergiant cluster, Bica et al.'s #122. It indicates that a time scale of gas expulsion differs considerably in individual clusters.

We argue that it is a part of giant radio relics associated with a nearby cluster of galaxies with cz~2400$ km s^{-1} centered on the spiral galaxy NGC 2377. The angular separation of these objects from the clustering center is consistent with the separation of distant relics to the cluster center if scaled by distance. This fact implies that the concentrations of meter-wave luminous objects can be used as a tracer of the structure of the Local Supercluster and it's vicinity.

A concept for the fabrication of highly symmetric quantum dots that are coherently embedded in a single crystalline matrix is demonstrated. In this approach, the formation of the quantum dots is induced by a transformation of an epitaxial 2D quantum well into an array of isolated precipitates with dimensions of about 25 nm. The formation process is driven by the immiscibility of the constituent materials resulting from their different lattice structures. The investigated PbTe/CdTe heterosystem combines two different cubic lattices with almost identical lattice constants. Therefore, the precipitated quantum dots are almost strain free and near thermodynamic equilibrium they exhibit the shape of small-rhombo-cubo-octahedrons. The PbTe/CdTe quantum dots, grown on GaAs substrates, display intense room temperature luminescence at wavelength around 3.2 micrometer, which makes them auspicious for applications in mid-infrared photonic devices.

We investigate the problem of elementarity in taking into account of the simplest model of the charge structure known as the rishon model, where the charge units are known as 1/3 ($T$) and 0 ($V$). In order to approach to sub-structure together with the problem of simplicity of charge structure, possible rearrangements of rishons are investigated on the basis of color and hypercolor confinement condition. Further, possible existence of the simplest electroweak sub-structure is discussed. Our model predicts possible proton decay mode, in which $X$ and $Y$ bosons are not concerned.

Here $Δ$ is the fundamental representation of $Pin(N)$ and $V$ is the natural (vector) representation of the orthogonal group O(N). We consider the centralizer algebra $\mathbf{CP_k} = Pin(N)(Δ\textstyle{\bigotimes \bigotimes^k V})$ for $Pin(N)$, the double covering group of O(N) and define two kinds of linear basis in $\mathbf{CP_k}$ (one comes from invariant theory and the other from representation theory), both of which are parameterized by the 'generalized Brauer diagrams'. We develop analogous argument to the original Brauer centralizer algebra for O(N) and determine the transformation matrices between the above two basis and give the multiplication rules of those basis. Finally we define the subspaces in $Δ\textstyle{\bigotimes \bigotimes^k V}$, on which the symmetric group $\frak{S}_k$ and $Pin(N)$ or $Spin(N)$ act as a dual pair.

Possible forsterite nanoparticle model of the Extended Red Emission(ERE) is proposed on the basis of photo-luminescence of forsterite after gamma-ray and neutron irradiation. Forsterite exhibits interesting thermoluminescence spectrum similar to ERE of Red Rectangle after irradiation in low temperature. It is shown that the forsterite after thermoluminescence is over exhibits photo-luminescence(PL) when Ultraviolet ray is irradiated. The structure of PL spectrum is almost similar to that of thermoluminescence. In order to explain small variations of the peak position of wavelength of ERE spectrum, possible nanoparticle model of forsterite is investigated. Our model is consistent to the ISO observation data in near and middle infrared region, which suggest the existence of forsterite.

Algebraicity of some Weil Hodge classes
Authors:

Abstract:
We show the dominance of a certain Prym map. By the Scoens result, this implies the algebraicity of Weil Hodge classes of Abelian 6-folds for the Gauss number field with the discriminant 1.

A Schematic Model of Leptons and Quarks Based on Majorana Partners
Authors:
K. Koike
Abstract:
The possible extension of generation structure is investigated on the basis of a composite model, in which leptons and quarks are composed of rishons $T$ with charge 1/3 and purely neutral $V$. In this sub-system, we regard $V$ as the origin of Majorana particles. The seesaw mechanism implies the possible existence of heavy $V$, denoted as $V_B$ in addition to ordinary $V$, denoted as $V_s$. If…

Abstract:
Interstellar matter is known to be strongly irradiated by radiation and several types of cosmic ray particles. Simulated interstellar matter, such as forsterite $\rm Mg_{2}SiO_{4}$, enstatite $\rm MgSiO_{3}$ and magnesite $\rm MgCO_{3}$ has been irradiated with the $\rm ^{60}Co$ gamma-rays in liquid nitrogen, and also irradiated with fast neutrons at 10 K and 70 K by making use of the low-temper…

Maximum fast neutron dose is $10^{17}n_f{\rm /cm^{2}}$).
After irradiation, samples are stored in liquid nitrogen for several months to allow the decay of induced radioactivity. We measured the luminescence spectra of the gamma ray irradiated samples during warming to 370K using a spectrophotometer. For the forsterite and magnesite, the spectra exhibit a rather intense peak at about 645 -- 655 nm and 660 nm respectively, whereas luminescence scarcely appeared in olivine sample. The spectra of forsterite is very similar to the ERE of the Red Rectangle.

A Model of Hot-Sector Generations
Authors:
Kazuo Koike
Abstract:
Possible existence of "hot-sector generations" above the well known 3 generation bound is investigated on the basis of a model of leptons and quarks, which is based on the Harari and Shupe's one. Our model predicts the existence of {\bf3 + 1} generations above the ordinary "cold-sector" 3 generations. Majorana neutrinos are introduced to realize the heavy neutrino masses in hot-sector generation…

Our model exhibits the hierarcy structure after sea-saw mechanism provived that possible existence of realistic right-handed neutrinos are taken into account. Then, in the GUTs model based on our scheme, possible inter-generation properties are examined together with the classification of gauge bosons. It is shown that if our scheme is realized, the proton decay exhibits different mode from ordinary one.

Abstract:
In this article we study the inverse of the period map for the family $\mathcal{F}$ of complex algebraic curves of genus 6 equipped with an automorphism of order 5. This is a family with 2 parameters, and is fibred over a certain type of Del Pezzo surace. The period satisfies the hypergeometric differential equation for Appell's $F_1({3/5},{3/5},{2/5},{6/5})$ of two variables after a certain normalization of the variable parameter. This differential equation and the family $\mathcal{F}$ are studied by G. Shimura (1964), T. Terada (1983, 1985), P. Deligne - G.D. Mostow (1986) and T. Yamazaki- M. Yoshida(1984). Recently M. Yoshida presented a new approch using the concept of configration space. Based on their results we show the representation of the inverse of the period map in terms of Riemann theta constants. This is the first variant of the work of H. Shiga (1981) and K. Matsumoto (1989, 2000) to the co-compact case.

Let us consider the rank 14 lattice $P=D_4^3\oplus < -2> \oplus < 2>$. We define a K3 surface S of type P with the property that $P\subset {\rm Pic}(S) $, where ${\rm Pic}(S) $ indicates the Picard lattice of S. In this article we study the family of K3 surfaces of type P with a certain fixed multipolarization. We note the orthogonal complement of P in the K3 lattice takes the form $$ U(2)\oplus U(2)\oplus (-2I_4). $$ We show the following results: \item{(1)}
A K3 surface of type P has a representation as a double cover over ${\bf P}^1\times {\bf P}^1$ as the following affine form in (s,t,w) space: $$ S=S(x): w^2=\prod_{k=1}^4 (x_{1}^{(k)}st+x_{2}^{(k)}s+x_{3}^{(k)}t+x_{4}^{(k)}), \ x_k=\pmatrix{x_{1}^{(k)}&x_{2}^{(k)}\cr x_{3}^{(k)}&x_{4}^{(k)}} \in M(2,{\bf C}). $$ We make explicit description of the Picard lattice and the transcendental lattice of S(x). \item{(2)}
We describe the period domain for our family of marked K3 surfaces and determine the modular group. \par \noindent \item{(3)}
We describe the differential equation for the period integral of S(x) as a function of $x\in (GL(2,{\bf C}))^4$. That bocomes to be a certain kind of hypergeometric one. We determine the rank, the singular locus and the monodromy group for it. \par \noindent \item{(4)} It appears a family of 8 dimensional abelian varieties as the family of Kuga-Satake varieties for our K3 surfaces. The abelian variety is characterized by the property that the endomorphism algebra contains the Hamilton quarternion field over ${\bf Q}$.

See-saw Mechanism and Possible Generation Structure
Authors:

Abstract:
On the basis of see-saw mechanism, possible generation structure is investigated. Assuming that right-handed neutrinos are realistic particles below GUTs mass, it is shown that there is a choice of new scheme of generation,where the combination of leptons and quarks is different from the ordinary one. Our scheme predict a new proton decay mode.
