A narrow-linewidth, dual-wavelength laser system is vital for the creation of ultracold ground state molecules via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) from a weakly bound Feshbach state. Here we describe how a relatively simple apparatus consisting of a single fixed-length optical cavity can be used to narrow the linewidth of the two different wavelength lasers required for STIRAP simultaneously. The frequency of each of these lasers is referenced to the cavity and is continuously tunable away from the cavity modes through the use of non-resonant electrooptic modulators. Self-heterodyne measurements suggest the laser linewidths are reduced to several hundred Hz. In the context of 87Rb133Cs molecules produced via magnetoassociation on a Feshbach resonance, we demonstrate the performance of the laser system through one- and two-photon molecular spectroscopy. Finally, we demonstrate transfer of the molecules to the rovibrational ground state using STIRAP.

We investigate magnetoassociation of ultracold Feshbach molecules from a Bose- Einstein condensate of Cs atoms and explore the spectrum of weakly bound molecular states close to the atomic threshold. By exploiting the variation of magnetic field experienced by a molecular cloud falling in the presence of a magnetic field gradient, we demonstrate the repeated output coupling of molecules from a single atomic cloud using a Feshbach resonance at 19.89 G. Using this method we are able to produce up to 24 separate pulses of molecules from a single atomic condensate, with a molecular pulse created every 7.2 ms. Furthermore, by careful control of the magnetic bias field and gradient we are able to utilise an avoided crossing in the bound state spectrum at 13.3G to demonstrate exquisite control over the dynamics of the molecular clouds.

We report the creation of a sample of over 1000 ultracold $^{87}$RbCs molecules in the lowest rovibrational ground state, from an atomic mixture of $^{87}$Rb and Cs, by magnetoassociation on an interspecies Feshbach resonance followed by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP). Stark spectroscopy of the rovibrational ground state yields an electric dipole moment of 1.225(3)(8) D, where the values in parentheses are the statistical and systematic uncertainties, respectively. We demonstrate that a space-fixed dipole moment of 0.355(2)(4) D is accessible in RbCs, which is substantially higher than in previous work.

We have measured the magnetic moment of the Feshbach molecules in a magnetic bias field range between 181 and 185\,G to demonstrate the ability to control the character of the molecular state. In addition we have performed Feshbach spectroscopy in a field range from 0 to 1200\,G and located three previously unobserved resonances at high magnetic fields.

Abstract:
We present 17 experimentally confirmed Feshbach resonances in optically trapped 85Rb. Seven of the resonances are in the ground-state channel (f,m_f) = (2,+2)+(2,+2), and nine are in the excited-state channel (2,-2)+(2,-2). We find a wide resonance at high field in each of the two channels, offering new possibilities for the formation of larger 85Rb condensates and studies of few-body physics. A d…

A detailed coupled-channels analysis is presented to characterize the resonances, and also provides an understanding of the inelastic losses observed in the excited-state channel. In addition we have confirmed the existence of one narrow resonance in a (2,+2)+(3,+3) spin mixture.

We measure 14 interspecies features in the lowest spin channels for a magnetic field range from 0 to 700 G and show that they are in good agreement with coupled-channel calculations. The interspecies background scattering length is close to zero over a large range of magnetic fields, permitting the sensitive detection of Feshbach resonances through interspecies thermalisation. Our results confirm the quality of the Rb-Cs potential curves and offer promising starting points for the production of ultracold polar molecules.

We report the production of a high phase-space density mixture of $^{87}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs atoms in a levitated crossed optical dipole trap as the first step towards the creation of ultracold RbCs molecules via magneto-association. We present a simple and robust experimental setup designed for the sympathetic cooling of $^{133}$Cs via interspecies elastic collisions with $^{87}$Rb. Working with the $|F=1, m_F=+1 >$ and the $|3, +3 >$ states of $^{87}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs respectively, we measure a high interspecies three-body inelastic collision rate $\sim 10^{-25}-10^{-26} \rm{cm}^{6}\rm{s}^{-1}$ which hinders the sympathetic cooling. Nevertheless by careful tailoring of the evaporation we can produce phase-space densities near quantum degeneracy for both species simultaneously. In addition we report the observation of an interspecies Feshbach resonance at 181.7(5) G and demonstrate the creation of Cs$_{2}$ molecules via magneto-association on the 4g(4) resonance at 19.8 G. These results represent important steps towards the creation of ultracold RbCs molecules in our apparatus.

We report an apparatus and method capable of producing Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of ~1x10^6 87Rb atoms, and ultimately designed for sympathetic cooling of 133Cs and the creation of ultracold RbCs molecules. The method combines several elements: i) the large recapture of a magnetic quadrupole trap from a magneto-optical trap, ii) efficient forced RF evaporation in such a magnetic trap, iii) the gain in phase-space density obtained when loading the magnetically trapped atoms into a far red-detuned optical dipole trap and iv) efficient evaporation to BEC within the dipole trap. We demonstrate that the system is capable of sympathetically cooling the |F=1,m_F=-1> and |1,0> sublevels with |1,+1> atoms. Finally we discuss the applicability of the method to sympathetic cooling of 133Cs with 87Rb.

Our method exploits the efficient sympathetic cooling of $^{133}$Cs via elastic collisions with $^{87}$Rb, initially in a magnetic quadrupole trap and subsequently in a levitated optical trap. The two condensates each contain up to $2\times10^{4}$ atoms and exhibit a striking phase separation, revealing the mixture to be immiscible due to strong repulsive interspecies interactions. Sacrificing all the $^{87}$Rb during the cooling, we create single species $^{133}$Cs condensates of up to $6\times10^{4}$ atoms.
