The molecular dynamics of regioregulated poly(3-hexylthiophene) P3HT is investigated using muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR). The response of the $μ$SR spectra to a longitudinal magnetic field ($B_{\rm LF}$, parallel to the initial muon spin direction) indicates that the implanted muons form both muonated radicals localized on the thiophene ring and diamagnetic states with comparable yields. Moreover, the unpaired electron in the radical undergoes hyperfine interactions with muon bound to thiophene and with neighboring protons, whose fluctuations can serve as a measure for the molecular dynamics. The $B_{\rm LF}$ dependence of the longitudinal muon spin relaxation rate ($1/T_{1μ}$) measured in detail at several temperatures is found to be well reproduced by the spectral density function $J(ω)$ derived from the local susceptibility that incorporates the Havriliak-Negami (H-N) function used in the analysis of dielectric relaxation, $χ(ω)\propto1/[1-i(ω/\tildeν)^δ]^γ$ (where $\tildeν$ is the mean fluctuation rate, and $0<γ, δ\le1$). The magnitude of $\tildeν$ and its temperature dependence deduced from the analysis of $1/T_{1μ}$ are found to be consistent with the motion of hexyl chains and thiophene rings suggested by $^{13}$C-NMR. The present result marks a methodological milestone in the application of $μ$SR to the dynamics of complex systems with coexisting fluctuations over a wide range of time scales, such as polymers.

In zero applied field (ZF), muon depolarization due to the distribution of nuclear dipole fields was observed in the temperature range from 4 K to 270 K. Interestingly, $μ^+$SR time spectra in ZF maintained a Gaussian-like feature over the entire range, while the depolarization rate exhibited a monotonic decrease with increasing temperature. This behavior may be attributed to the thermally activated diffusion of muons between a few adjacent sites within a confined space of the angstrom scale, where the motionally averaged local field that each muon experiences can remain non-zero and result in maintaining the Gaussian-like line shape. The spatial distribution of electrostatic potential at lattice interstices evaluated via density functional theory calculations suggests that such a restriction of muon diffusion paths can be caused by the random distribution of cations with different nominal valences in the mixed perovskite lattice.

The magnetic ground state of single crystalline RuO$_2$ was investigated by the muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) experiment. The spin precession signal due to the spontaneous internal magnetic field $B_{\rm loc}$, which is expected in the magnetically ordered phase, was not observed in the temperature range 5--400~K. Muon sites were evaluated by first-principles calculations using dilute hydrogen simulating muon as pseudo-hydrogen, and $B_{\rm loc}$ was simulated for the antiferromagnetic (AFM) structures with a Ru magnetic moment $|{\bf m}_{\rm Ru}|\approx0.05μ_\mathrm{B}$ suggested from diffraction experiments. As a result, the possibility was ruled out that muons are localized at sites where $B_{\rm loc}$ accidentally cancels. Conversely, assuming that the slow relaxation observed in $μ$SR spectra was part of the precession signal, the upper limit for the magnitude of $|{\bf m}_{\rm Ru}|$ was estimated to be $4.8(2)\times10^{-4}μ_{\rm B}$, which is significantly less than $0.05μ_\mathrm{B}$. These results indicate that the AFM order, as reported, is unlikely to exist in the bulk crystal.

The electronic and magnetic states of $β$-MnO$_{2}$ in terms of hydrogen impurities have been investigated by muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) technique combined with density-functional theory (DFT) calculations for muon as pseudo-hydrogen. We found that 85% of implanted muons are localized in the oxygen channels of the rutile structure and behave as interstitial protons (Mu$^{+})$ except those (7.6%) forming a charge-neutral state (Mu$^{0})$ at 2.3 K, which indicates that interstitial hydrogen acts as a shallow donor within less than 0.1 meV of ionization energy. The residual 15% of muons are attributed to those related to lattice imperfection as Mn vacancies. Detailed analyses combined with DFT approach suggested that the muon is localized at the center of the oxygen channel due to its large zero-point vibration energy.

The compound adopts a Yb$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$-type structure with a cubic Pm$\bar{3}$n. From the magnetization at 1 T, the effective magnetic moment was estimated to be 3.58 $μ_B$ per Pr$^{3+}$, suggesting that the magnetism is mainly contributed by Pr$^{3+}$ ions. The specific heat and magnetization show an anomaly at $T_{N} = 7.5$ ~ K owing to the phase transition. The muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) time spectra exhibit clear oscillations below $T_N$. This suggests that the phase is magnetically ordered. The volume fraction of the magnetic phase estimated from the initial asymmetry is around ten percent. In addition, spin fluctuations were observed at low temperatures. These results provide microscopic evidence that the material is closest to the antiferromagnetically quantum critical point with a partial order among Pr$_3$$T_4$Sn$_{13}$ ($T= $ Co, Ru, Rh).

In order to expand the applicability of muon spin rotation, relaxation, and resonance ($μ$SR) experiments with pulsed muons and to make effective use of the high-flux beam, we have developed a new experimental method ``transient $μ$SR''. In this method, $μ$SR data for each muon pulse are tagged with external parameters such as temperature and magnetic field in real time, allowing the sample environment to be changed without interrupting data collection. As a result, continuous $μ$SR measurements under sample conditions that vary on a time scale longer than the beam pulse interval (40 ms) are realized, and efficient beam utilization is achieved by eliminating the lag time associated with moving between discrete measurement points. The transient $μ$SR method was applied to the study of the magnetic properties of cupric oxide (CuO) and the observation of level-crossing resonance relaxation in copper, and the method was successfully established by confirming that the results reproduce those in the previous reports.

In the quest to find quantum spin liquids, layered cobalt oxides Na2Co2TeO6 and Na3Co2SbO6 have been proposed as promising candidates for approximating the Kitaev honeycomb model. Yet, their suitability has been thrown into question due to observed long-range magnetic order at low temperatures and indications of easy-plane, rather than Kitaev-type, spin anisotropy. Here we use muon spin relaxation to reveal an unexpected picture: contrary to the anticipated static nature of the long-range order, the systems show prevalent spin dynamics with spatially uneven distribution and varied correlation times. This underlines that the magnetic ground states cannot be solely described by the long-range order, suggesting a significant role of quantum fluctuations. Our findings not only shed new light on the complex physics of these systems but also underscore the need for a refined approach in the search for realizable quantum spin liquids.

Using muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on formamidinium lead iodide [FAPbI$_3$, where FA denotes HC(NH$_2)_2$] we show that, among the five structurally distinct phases of FAPbI$_3$ exhibited through two different temperature hysteresis, the reorientation motion of FA molecules is quasi-static below $\approx50$ K over the time scale of 10$^{-6}$ s in the low-temperature (LT) hexagonal (Hex-LT, $<160$ K) phase which has relatively longer photo-excited charge carrier lifetime ($τ_{\rm c}\sim$10$^{-6}$ s). In contrast, a sharp increase in the FA molecular motion was found above $\approx50$ K in the Hex-LT phase, LT-tetragonal phase (Tet-LT, $<140$ K), the high-temperature (HT) hexagonal phase (Hex-HT, 160-380 K), and the HT-tetragonal phase (Tet-HT, 140-280 K) where $τ_{\rm c}$ decreases with increasing temperature. More interestingly, the reorientation motion is further promoted in the cubic phase at higher temperatures ($>380/280$ K), while $τ_{\rm c}$ is recovered to comparable or larger than that of the LT phases. These results indicate that there are two factors that determine $τ_{\rm c}$, one related to the local reorientation of cationic molecules that is not unencumbered by phonons, and the other to the high symmetry of the bulk crystal structure.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the oxygen (O) $K$-edge were performed to investigate the magnetic polarization of ligand O atoms in the weak ferromagnetic (WFM) phase of the Ir perovskite compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. With the onset of the WFM phase below $T_{\rm N}\simeq240$ K, XMCD signals corresponding to XAS peaks respectively identified as originating from the magnetic moments of apical and planar oxygen (O$_{\rm A}$ and O$_{\rm P}$) in the IrO$_6$ octahedra were observed. The observation of magnetic moments at O$_{\rm A}$ sites is consistent (except for the relative orientation) with that suggested by prior muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) experiment in the non-collinear antiferromagnetic (NC-AFM) phase below $T_{\rm M}\approx100$ K. Assuming that the O$_{\rm A}$ magnetic moment observed by $μ$SR is also responsible for the corresponding XMCD signal, the magnetic moment of O$_{\rm P}$ is estimated to be consistent with the previous $μ$SR result. Since the O$_{\rm A}$ XMCD signal is mainly contributed by Ir 5$d$ $zx$ and $yz$ orbitals which also hybridize with O$_{\rm P}$, it is inferred that the relatively large O$_{\rm P}$ magnetic moment is induced by Ir 5$d$ $xy$ orbitals. Moreover, the inversion of O$_{\rm A}$ moments relative to Ir moments between the two magnetic phases revealed by XMCD suggests the presence of competing magnetic interactions for O$_{\rm A}$, with which the ordering of O$_{\rm A}$ moments in the NC-AFM phase may be suppressed to $T_{\rm M}$.

The local electronic structure of muons (Mu) as dilute pseudo-hydrogen in single-crystalline $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ has been studied by the muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR). High-precision measurements over a long time range of $\sim$25 $μ$s have clearly identified two distinct Mu states: a quasi-static Mu (Mu$_1$) and fast-moving Mu (Mu$_2$). By comparing this result with predictions from the recently established ambipolarity model, these two states are respectively attributed to the relaxed-excited states associated with the donor ($E^{+/0}$) and acceptor ($E^{-/0}$) levels predicted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the interstitial H. Furthermore, the local electronic structure of Mu$_1$ is found to be an OMu-bonded state with three-coordinated oxygen. The structure is almost identical with the thermal equilibrium state of H, and it is found to function as an electron donor. The other Mu$_2$ is considered to be in the hydride state (Mu$^-$) from the ambipolarity model, suggesting that it is in fast diffusion motion through the short-lived neutral state due to the charge exchange reaction with conduction electrons (Mu$^0+e^-\rightleftarrows$Mu$^-$).

This study investigates Na-ion dynamics in the quasi-1D (Q1D) diffusion channels created by the honeycomb-like arrangement of CrO$_6$ octahedra, in the presence of defects introduced by Ca do**. With increasing Ca content, the size of the diffusion channels is enlarged, however, this effect does not enhance the Na ion mobility. Instead the overall diffusivity is hampered by the local defects and the Na hop** probability is lowered. The diffusion mechanism in Na$_{\rm x}$Ca$_{1- \rm x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$ was found to be interstitial and the activation energy as well as diffusion coefficient were determined for all the members of the solid solution.

The recent synthesis of the chromium selenide compound LiCrSe$_2$ constitutes a valuable addition to the ensemble of two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnets (2D-TLA). In this work we present the very first comprehensive study of the combined low temperature nuclear and magnetic structure established in this material. Details on the connection between Li-ion dynamics and structural changes are also presented along with a direct link between atomic structure and spin order via a strong magnetoelastic coupling. LiCrSe$_2$ was found to undergo a first order structural transition from a trigonal crystal system with space group $P\bar{3}m1$ to a monoclinic one with space group $C2/m$ at $T_{\rm s}=30$~K. Such restructuring of the lattice is accompanied by a magnetic transition at $T_{\rm N}=30$~K, with the formation of a complex spin arrangement for the Cr$^{3+}$ moments. Refinement of the magnetic structure with neutron diffraction data and complementary muon spin rotation analysis reveal the presence of two incommensurate magnetic domains with a up-up-down-down arrangement of the spins with ferromagnetic (FM) double chains coupled antiferromagnetically (AFM). In addition to this unusual arrangement, the spin axial vector is modulated both in direction and modulus, resulting in a spin density wave-like order with periodic suppression of the Cr moment along the chains. This behavior is believed to appear as a result of strong competition between direct exchange AFM and superexchange FM couplings established between both nearest neighbor and next nearest neighbor Cr$^{3+}$ ions. We finally conjecture that the resulting magnetic order is stabilized via subtle vacancy/charge order within the Li layers, potentially causing a mix of two different magnetic phases within the sample.

Magnesium hydride has great potential as a solid hydrogen (H) storage material because of its high H storage capacity of 7.6 wt%. However, its slow hydrogenation and dehydrogenation kinetics and the high temperature of 300 $^\circ$C required for decomposition are major obstacles to small-scale applications such as automobiles. The local electronic structure of interstitial H in MgH$_2$ is an important fundamental knowledge in solving this problem, which has been studied mainly based on density functional theory (DFT). However, few experimental studies have been performed to assess the results of DFT calculations. We have therefore introduced muon (Mu) as pseudo-H into MgH$_2$ and investigated the corresponding interstitial H states by analyzing their electronic and dynamical properties in detail. As a result, we observed multiple Mu states similar to those observed in wide-gap oxides, and found that their electronic states can be attributed to relaxed-excited states associated with donor/acceptor levels predicted by the recently proposed "ambipolarity model". This provides an indirect support for the DFT calculations on which the model is based via the donor/acceptor levels. An important implication of the muon results for improved hydrogen kinetics is that dehydrogenation, serving as a $reduction$ for hydrides, stabilizes the interstitial H$^-$ state.

The magnetic ground state of oxynitride pyrochlore Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_{5-y}$N$_2$, a candidate compound for the quantum spin liquid ($S=1/2$, Mo$^{5+}$), was studied by muon spin rotation/relaxation experiment. In contrast to Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ ($S=1$, Mo$^{4+}$) which exhibits the spin-glass behavior with a freezing temperature $T_g\simeq16$ K, no such spin freezing or long range magnetic order was observed down to 0.3 K. Moreover, two separate magnetic domains were detected below $\sim$13 K, which were characterized by differences in spin dynamics. The first is the "sporadic" spin fluctuation seen in frustrated antiferromagnets, where the amplitude of the hyperfine fields suggests that the excitation comprises a local cluster of unpaired spins. The other is rapid paramagnetic fluctuation, which is only weakly suppressed at low temperatures. In place of the paramagnetic fluctuation, the volume fraction for the sporadic fluctuation steadily increases with decreasing temperature, indicating the formation of an excitation gap with a broad distribution of the gap energy involving null gap.

Here, by using muon spin relaxation technique that probes the fluctuation of local magnetic fields, we show that the muon depolarization rate ($Δ$) of a prototype HOIP methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI$_3$) shows a sharp decrease with increasing temperature in two steps above 120 K and 190 K across the structural transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal structure at 162 K. Our analysis shows that the reduction of $Δ$ is quantitatively in agreement with the expected behavior due to the rapid development of MA jum** rotation around the $C_3$ and $C_4$ symmetry axes. Our results provide direct evidence for the intimate relation between the rotation of the electric dipoles of MA molecules and the charge carrier lifetime in HOIPs.

Semimetallic osmium pyrochlore oxide Cd2Os2O7 undergoes a magnetic transition to an all-in-all-out (AIAO)-type order at 227 K, followed by a crossover to an AIAO insulator at around 210 K. Here, we studied the isostructural and isoelectronic compound Hg2Os2O7 through thermodynamic measurements, muSR spectroscopy and neutron diffraction experiments. A similar magnetic transition, probably to an AIAO-type order, was observed at 88 K, while the resistivity showed a decrease at the transition and remained metallic down to 2 K. Thus, the ground state of Hg2Os2O7 is most likely an AIAO semimetal, which is analogous to the intermediate-temperature state of Cd2Os2O7. Hg2Os2O7 exists on the verge of the metal-insulator boundary on the metal side and provides an excellent platform for studying the electronic instability of 5d electrons with moderate electron correlations and strong spin-orbit interactions.

The study on the electronic state of muon as pseudo-hydrogen (represented by the elemental symbol Mu) has long been appreciated as one of the few methods to experimentally access the electronic state of dilute hydrogen (H) in semiconductors and dielectrics. Meanwhile, theoretical predictions on the electronic state of H in these materials by first-principles calculations using density functional theory (DFT) do not always agree with the observed states of Mu, standing as an obstacle to integrating the findings of both Mu and H. In this paper, we provide resolution to this problem by a semi-quantitative model that enables systematic understanding of the electronic states of Mu in most oxides.

Dimensionality is a critical factor in determining the properties of solids and is an apparent built-in character of the crystal structure. However, it can be an emergent and tunable property in geometrically frustrated spin systems. Here, we study the spin dynamics of the tetrahedral cluster antiferromagnet, pharmacosiderite, via muon spin resonance and neutron scattering. We find that the spin correlation exhibits a two-dimensional characteristic despite the isotropic connectivity of tetrahedral clusters made of spin 5/2 Fe3+ ions in the three-dimensional cubic crystal, which we ascribe to two-dimensionalisation by geometrical frustration based on spin wave calculations. Moreover, we suggest that even one-dimensionalisation occurs in the decoupled layers, generating low-energy and one-dimensional excitation modes, causing large spin fluctuation in the classical spin system. Pharmacosiderite facilitates studying the emergence of low-dimensionality and manipulating anisotropic responses arising from the dimensionality using an external magnetic field.

Intermetallic silicide compounds, LaScSi and Y$_5$Si$_3$, known for being hydrogen (H) storage materials, are drawing attention as candidates for electrides in which anions are substituted by unbound electrons. It is inferred from a muon spin rotation experiment that the local field at the muon site (which is the same site as that for H) in these compounds exhibits a large negative shift under an external magnetic field, which is mostly independent of temperature. Such anomalous diamagnetism signals a unique property of electride electrons associated with transition metals. Moreover, the diamagnetic shift decreases with increasing H content, suggesting that the electride electrons existing coherently in the hollow interstitial positions are adsorbed by H to form hydride ions (H$^-$)

We performed muon spin rotation/relaxation measurements to investigate the magnetic behavior of $T^{\prime}$-type Eu$_2$CuO$_4$ (ECO), which is the parent compound of electron-doped cuprate superconductors, and the effects of oxygen-reduction annealing on its magnetism. In as-sintered (AS) ECO, we clarified the development of magnetic correlations upon cooling below $T_\mathrm{N1}$ (= 265 K) as well as the coexistence of a dominant fluctuating spin state and partially ordered spin state in the temperature range between $\sim$150 K and $T_\mathrm{N1}$. Upon further cooling, uniform long-range magnetic order was observed below $T_\mathrm{N2} = 110$ K, which is close to the ordering temperature of 115 K in $T^{\prime}$-type La$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCO) [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 82}, 180508(R) (2010)]. For oxygen-reduction-annealed ECO, a similar ordering sequence with the same $T_\mathrm{N2}$ was observed but without the partially ordered spin state. Therefore, the fluctuating spin state over a wide temperature range and a $T_\mathrm{N2}$ less than the N{é}el temperature ($T_\mathrm{N2} \approx T_\mathrm{N1}$) in $T$-type LCO are common features of the $T^{\prime}$-type parent $R_2$CuO$_4$ ($R$CO, $R$: rare-earth ion). The origin of the partially ordered spin state in AS ECO is discussed from the viewpoint of chemical defect. Furthermore, we discuss the roles of electron do** and repairing defect in the observed effect of annealing on the magnetism of $T^{\prime}$-type $R$CO.

Here, we report the results of muon spin relaxation and magnetic susceptibility measurements to elucidate the magnetism of $T$*-type La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LESCO) via magnetic Fe- and non-magnetic Zn-substitution. We clarified the inducement of the spin-glass (SG)-like magnetically ordered state in La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$Cu$_y$Fe$_{1-y}$O$_4$ with $x = 0.24 + y$, and the non-magnetic state in La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$Cu$_y$Zn$_{1-y}$O$_4$ with $x$ = 0.24 after the suppression of superconductivity for $y$ $\geq$ 0.025. The SG state lies below $\sim$7 K in a wide Sr concentration range between 0.19 and 0.34 in 5$\%$ Fe-substituted LESCO. The short-range SG state is consistent with that originating from the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction in a metallic state. Thus, the results provide the first evidence for Fermi liquid (FL) state in the pristine $T$*-type LESCO. Taking into account the results of an oxygen $K$-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurement $[$J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 89, 075002 (2020)$]$ reporting the actual hole concentrations in LESCO, our results demonstrate the existence of the FL state in a lower hole-concentration region, compared to that in $T$-type La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. The emergence of the FL state in a lower hole-concentration region is possibly associated with a smaller charge transfer gap energy in the parent material with five oxygen coordination.

We report results of a muon spin relaxation study of slow magnetic fluctuations in the pseudogap phase of underdoped single-crystalline YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$, $y = 6.77$ and 6.83. The dependence of the dynamic muon spin relaxation rate on applied magnetic field yields the rms magnitude~$B\mathrm{_{loc}^{rms}}$ and correlation time~$τ_c$ of fluctuating local fields at muon sites. The observed relaxation rates do not decrease with decreasing temperature~$T$ below the pseudogap onset at $T^\ast$, as would be expected for a conventional magnetic transition; both $B\mathrm{_{loc}^{rms}}$ and $τ_c$ are roughly constant in the pseudogap phase down to the superconducting transition. Corresponding NMR relaxation rates are estimated to be too small to be observable. Our results put strong constraints on theories of the anomalous pseudogap magnetism in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$.

Muon spin rotation and resonant soft X-ray scattering experiments on prototype multiferroics RMn2O5 (R = Y, Sm) are used to demonstrate that the local electric displacements are driven by the spin-current (SC) mechanism. Small local electric displacements were evaluated by observing spin polarization at ligand O ions, for which implanted muons served as an extremely sensitive probe. Our results for YMn2O5 provide evidence that the spin polarization of O ions forming a spin cycloid chain with Mn spins increases in proportion to the vector spin chirality (Si x Sj ) of the Mn ions. This relationship strongly indicates that the charge transfer between O and Mn ions is driven by the SC mechanism, which leads to the ferroelectricity accompanying O spin polarization.

Substituting Te by W, the affected impurity plaquettes have predominantly second-neighbor interactions, thus causing local magnetic frustration. Here we report a study of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ using neutron diffraction and $μ$SR techniques, showing that the Néel order vanishes already at $x = 0.025 \pm 0.005$. We explain this extreme order suppression using a two-dimensional Heisenberg spin model, demonstrating that a W-type impurity induces a deformation of the order parameter that decays with distance as $1/r^2$ at temperature $T=0$. The associated logarithmic singularity leads to loss of order for any $x>0$. Order for small $x>0$ and $T>0$ is induced by weak interplane couplings. In the nonmagnetic phase of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$, the $μ$SR relaxation rate exhibits quantum critical scaling with a large dynamic exponent, $z \approx 3$, consistent with a random-singlet state.

The magnetism of the second antiferromagnetic phase (AF2) arising in the iron-based LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_{x}$ superconductor for $x\gtrsim0.4$ was investigated by muon spin rotation measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to 2.6 GPa. The Néel temperature ($T_{\rm N}$) obtained for a sample with $x=0.51$ exhibits considerably greater sensitivity to pressure than that in the pristine antiferromagnetic phase (AF1, $x\lesssim0.06$). Moreover, while the AF1 phase is always accompanied by the structural transition (from tetragonal to orthorhombic) at a temperature ($T_{\rm s}$) which is slightly higher than $T_{\rm N}$, the AF2 phase prevails at higher pressures above $\sim$1.5 GPa where the structural transition is suppressed ($T_{\rm s}=0$). These features indicate that the microscopic origin of the AF2 phase is distinct from that of AF1, suggesting that electronic correlation plays important role in the former phase. We argue that the orbital-selective Mott transition is a plausible scenario to account for the observed pressure dependence of $T_{\rm N}$ and $T_{\rm s}$ in the AF2 phase.

The layered perovskite PrBaCo2O5.5+x demonstrates a strong negative thermal expansion (NTE) which holds potential for being fabricated into composites with zero thermal expansion. The NTE was found to be intimately associated with the spontaneous magnetic ordering, known as magnetovolume effect (MVE). Here we report with compelling evidences that the continuous-like MVE in PrBaCo2O5.5+x is intrinsically of discontinuous character, originating from an magnetoelectric transition from an antiferromagnetic insulating large-volume (AFILV) phase to a ferromagnetic metallic small-volume (FMSV) phase. Furthermore, the magnetoelectric effect (ME) shows high sensitivity to multiple external stimuli such as temperature, carrier do**, hydrostatic pressure, magnetic field etc. In contrast to the well-known ME such as colossal magnetoresistance and multiferroic effect which involve symmetry breaking of crystal structure, the ME in the cobaltite is purely isostructural. Our discovery provides a new pathway to realizing the ME as well as the NTE, which may find applications in new techniques.

We report on a novel spin-charge fluctuation in the all-in-all-out pyrochlore magnet Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$, where the spin fluctuation is driven by the conduction of thermally excited electrons/holes and associated fluctuation of Os valence. The fluctuation exhibits an activation energy significantly greater than the spin-charge excitation gap and a peculiar frequency range of $10^{6}$--$10^{10}$ s$^{-1}$. These features are attributed to the hop** motion of carriers as small polarons in the insulating phase, where the polaron state is presumably induced by the magnetoelastic coupling via the strong spin-orbit interaction. Such a coupled spin-charge-phonon fluctuation manifests as a part of the metal-insulator transition that is extended over a wide temperature range due to the modest electron correlation comparable with other interactions characteristic for 5$d$-subshell systems.

The hyperfine features and thermal stability of a muonium (Mu)-related paramagnetic center were investigated in the SrTiO$_3$ perovskite titanate via muon spin rotation spectroscopy. The hyperfine coupling tensor of the paramagnetic center was found to have prominent dipolar characteristics, indicating that the electron spin density is dominantly distributed on a Ti site to form a small polaron near an ionized Mu$^+$ donor. Based on a hydrogen-Mu analogy, interstitial hydrogen is also expected to form such a polaronic center in the dilute do** limit. The small activation energy of 30(3) meV found for the thermal dissociation of the Mu$^+$-polaron complex suggests that the strain energy required to distort the lattice is comparable to the electronic energy gained by localizing the electron.

Hidden magnetic order of Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$O$_4$, $x = 0.05$ and 0.1, has been studied using muon spin relaxation spectroscopy. In zero applied field and weak longitudinal fields ($μ_0H_L \lesssim 2$~mT), muon spin relaxation data can be well described by exponentially-damped static Lorentzian Kubo-Toyabe functions, indicating that static and dynamic local fields coexist at each muon site. For $μ_0H_L \gtrsim 2$~mT, the static rate is completely decoupled, and the exponential decay is due to dynamic spin fluctuations. In both zero field and $μ_0H_L = 1$--2~mT, the temperature dependencies of the exponential muon spin relaxation rate exhibit maxima at 215~K for $x = 0.05$ and 175~K for $x = 0.1$, suggesting critical slowing down of electronic spin fluctuations. The field dependencies of the dynamic spin fluctuation rates can be well described by the Redfield relation. The correlation time of this electronic spin fluctuation is in the range of~2--5~ns for Sr$_2$Ir$_{0.9}$Rh$_{0.1}$O$_4$, and shorter than 2~ns for Sr$_2$Ir$_{0.95}$Rh$_{0.05}$O$_4$. The rms fluctuating field is on the order of 1 mT, which is consistent with the polarized neutron diffraction cross-section.

We report on the local electronic structure of interstitial muon (Mu) as pseudo-hydrogen in In-Ga-Zn oxide (IGZO) semiconductor studied by muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) experiment. In polycrystalline (c-) IGZO, it is inferred that Mu is in a diamagnetic state, where the $μ$SR time spectra under zero external field is perfectly described by the Gaussian Kubo-Toyabe relaxation function with the linewidth $Δ$ serving as a sensitive measure for the random local fields from In/Ga nuclear magnetic moments. The magnitude of $Δ$ combined with the density functional theory calculations for H (to mimic Mu) suggests that Mu occupies Zn-O bond-center site (Mu$_{\rm BC}$) similar to the case in crystalline ZnO. This implies that the diamagnetic state in c-IGZO corresponds to Mu$_{\rm BC}^+$, thus serving as an electron donor. In amorphous (a-) IGZO, the local Mu structure in as-deposited films is nearly identical with that in c-IGZO, suggesting Mu$_{\rm BC}^+$ for the electronic state. In contrast, the diamagnetic signal in heavily hydrogenated a-IGZO films exhibits the Lorentzian Kubo-Toyabe relaxation, implying that Mu accompanies more inhomogeneous distribution of the neighboring nuclear spins that may involve Mu$^-$H$^-$-complex state in an oxygen vacancy.

Therefore, the ground state in LESCO drastically varies with oxidation annealing and the magnetic phase competitively exists with the superconducting (SC) phase. The magnetic phase in the AS LESCO is quite robust against Sr do**, while the SC phase degrades with increasing $x$. A monotonous decrease of the SC transition temperature from 24.5 K in $x$ = 0.14 to 9.0 K in $x$ = 0.28 suggests the disappearance of the SC phase at $x$ $\sim$ 0.34. Furthermore, we clarified the simultaneous development of (quasi) static magnetism and the electrical resistivity at a low temperature in AS samples, suggesting the inducement of magnetism by the suppression of carrier mobility. The variation in magnetism due to annealing is discussed from a viewpoint of structural defects, which was previously reported from neutron diffraction measurements.

Molecular based spin-1/2 triangular lattice systems such as LiZn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ have attracted research interest. Distortions, defects, and intersite disorder are suppressed in such molecular-based magnets, and intrinsic geometrical frustration gives rise to unconventional and unexpected ground states. Li$_2$$A$Mo$_3$O$_8$ ($A$ = In or Sc) is such a compound where spin-1/2 Mo$_3$O$_{13}$ clusters in place of Mo ions form the uniform triangular lattice. Their ground states are different according to the $A$ site. Li$_2$InMo$_3$O$_8$ undergoes conventional $120^\circ$ long-range magnetic order below $T_\text{N}=12$~K whereas isomorphic Li$_2$ScMo$_3$O$_8$ exhibits no long-range magnetic order down to 0.5~K. Here, we report exotic magnetisms in Li$_2$InMo$_3$O$_8$ and Li$_2$ScMo$_3$O$_8$ investigated by muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopies using polycrystalline samples. Li$_2$InMo$_3$O$_8$ and Li$_2$ScMo$_3$O$_8$ show completely different behaviors observed in both $μ$SR and INS measurements, representing their different ground states. Li$_2$InMo$_3$O$_8$ exhibits spin wave excitation which is quantitatively described by the nearest neighbor anisotropic Heisenberg model based on the $120^\circ$ spin structure. In contrast, Li$_2$ScMo$_3$O$_8$ undergoes short-range magnetic order below 4~K with quantum-spin-liquid-like magnetic fluctuations down to the base temperature. Origin of the different ground states is discussed in terms of anisotropies of crystal structures and magnetic interactions.

The magnetic behavior and effects of oxygen-reduction annealing on the magnetism of T'-structured R2CuO4 (R = Eu and Nd), which is the parent compound of electron-doped cuprate superconductors, have been investigated from muon spin rotation (muSR) measurements. In the muon time spectra of as-sintered R2CuO4, an oscillation component with a small amplitude and a dominant exponential-type decay component were observed for the temperature range between 150 K and TN1 (=250-270 K). This observation suggests an inhomogeneous magnetic phase of a fluctuating spin state and a locally ordered spin state at these temperatures. With decreasing temperature, the small oscillation component disappears, and the exponential one develops below 150 K. Upon further cooling, well-defined oscillation spectra corresponding to uniform long-ranged magnetic order emerge below TN2 = 110 K. Except for the absence of the small oscillation component, similar magnetic behavior is confirmed for the annealed compounds. Therefore, the successive development of magnetism characterized by the fluctuating spin state over a wide temperature range is a common feature for T'-R2CuO4. We discuss a possible picture for the ordering sequence in T'-R2CuO4 and the origin of the small oscillation component in the as-sintered compounds from the viewpoint of local defects.

LiV$_2$O$_4$ spinel is known to exhibit heavy fermion-like behavior below a characteristic temperature $T_K\simeq 20$ K, while it preserves a paramagnetic state down to $T\sim10^{-2}$ K due to geometrical frustration. Here, it is shown that the dynamical spin susceptibility $χ({\bf q},ω)$ in LiV$_2$O$_4$ exhibits anomalous duality which is modeled as a sum of itinerant ($χ_{\rm F}$) and local ($χ_{\rm L}$) components, and that the local spin dynamics inferred from $χ_{\rm L}({\bf q},ω)$ is qualitatively different from that expected from time-averaged bulk properties. The anomaly coexists with the marginal Fermi liquid behavior inferred from the $-\ln T$ dependence of the electronic specific heat over a wide temperature range below $T_K$. We argue that such unusual properties of LiV$_2$O$_4$ can be attributed to the putative metallic spin liquid state emerging near the quantum critical point between spin glass and Fermi liquid states.

The electronic structure of interstitial hydrogen in a compound semiconductor FeS$_2$ (naturally $n$-type) is inferred from a muon study. An implanted muon (Mu, a pseudo-hydrogen) forms electronically different defect centers discerned by the hyperfine parameter ($ω_{\rm hf}$). A body of evidence indicates that one muon is situated at the center of an iron-cornered tetrahedron with nearly isotropic $ω_{\rm hf}$ (Mu$_{\rm p}$), and that the other exists as a diamagnetic state (Mu$_{\rm d}$, $ω_{\rm hf}\simeq 0$). Their response to thermal agitation indicates that the Mu$_{\rm d}$ center accompanies a shallow level (donor or acceptor) understood by effective mass model while the electronic structure of Mu$_{\rm p}$ center is more isolated from host than Mu$_{\rm d}$ to form a deeper donor level. These observations suggest that interstitial hydrogen also serves as an electronically active impurity in FeS$_2$. Based on earlier reports on the hydrogen diffusion in FeS$_2$, possibility of fast diffusion for Mu$_{\rm p}$ leading to formation of a complex defect state (Mu$^*_{\rm d}$, $T\le 100$ K) or to motional narrowing state (Mu$^*_{\rm p}$, $T\ge 150$ K) is also discussed.

We demonstrate the presence of ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations in the superconducting and non-superconducting heavily overdoped regimes of high-temperature superconducting copper oxides, using (Bi,Pb)_2_Sr_2_CuO_6+delta_ (Bi-2201) single crystals. Magnetization curves exhibit a tendency to be saturated in high magnetic fields at low temperatures in the heavily overdoped crystals, which is probably a precursor phenomenon of a FM transition at a lower temperature. Muon spin relaxation detects the enhancement of spin fluctuations at high temperatures below 200 K. Correspondingly, the ab-plane resistivity follows a 4/3 power law in a wide temperature range, which is characteristic of metals with two-dimensional FM fluctuations due to itinerant electrons. As the Wilson ratio evidences the enhancement of spin fluctuations with hole do** in the heavily overdoped regime, it is concluded that two-dimensional FM fluctuations reside in the heavily overdoped Bi-2201 cuprates, which is probably related to the decrease in the superconducting transition temperature in the heavily overdoped cuprates.

Magnetic properties of the electride compound Y$_2$C were investigated by muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility on two samples with different form (poly- and single-crystalline), to examine the theoretically-predicted Stoner ferromagnetism for the electride bands. There was no evidence of static magnetic order in both samples even at temperatures down to 0.024 K. For the poly-crystalline sample, the presence of a paramagnetic moment at Y sites was inferred from the Curie-Weiss behavior of the muon Knight shift and susceptibility, whereas no such tendency was observed in the single-crystalline sample. These observations suggest that the electronic ground state of Y$_2$C is at the limit between weak-to-strong electronic correlation, where onsite Coulomb repulsion is sensitive to a local modulation of the electronic state or a shift in the Fermi level due to the presence of defects/impurities.

We report a muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) study of single-crystalline samples of the $α$-RuCl$_3$ honeycomb magnet, which is presumed to be a model compound for the Kitaev-Heisenberg interaction. It is inferred from magnetic susceptibility and specific-heat measurements that the present samples exhibit successive magnetic transitions at different critical temperatures $T_{\rm N}$ with decreasing temperature, eventually falling into the $T_{\rm N}=7$ K antiferromagnetic (7 K) phase that has been observed in only single-crystalline specimens with the least stacking fault. Via $μ$SR measurements conducted under a zero external field, we show that such behavior originates from a phase separation induced by the honeycomb plane stacking fault, yielding multiple domains with different $T_{\rm N}$'s. We also perform $μ$SR measurements under a transverse field in the paramagnetic phase to identify the muon site from the muon-Ru hyperfine parameters. Based on a comparison of the experimental and calculated internal fields at the muon site for the two possible spin structures inferred from neutron diffraction data, we suggest a modulated zig-zag spin structure for the 7 K phase, with the amplitude of the ordered magnetic moment being significantly reduced from that expected for the orbital quenched spin-1/2 state.

Magnetic properties of a one-dimensional frustrated quantum spin system Rb2Cu2Mo3O12 is investigated by the muon spin relaxation (muSR) technique. Although this system shows an incommensurate spin correlation in neutron scattering, it has not yet been determined whether the ground state reaches to a nonmagnetic spin-singlet state or not. In this study, our zero-field (ZF) muSR result undoubtedly reveals a nonmagnetic ground state, which establishes formation of the nonmagnetic incommensurate spin-singlet state in combination of the previous neutron scattering study. Furthermore, we found that the internal field is slightly enhanced below ~7 K. This temperature dependence resembles that of electric polarization under the magnetic field reported recently, indicating a possibility that a small change occurs even under ZF. In longitudinal-field measurements, a fast fluctuation around a narrowing region is observed. This relaxation is expected to reflect characteristics of formation of the spin-singlet state.

Excited configurations of hydrogen in the oxyhydride BaTiO$_{3-x}$H$_x$ ($x=0.1-0.5$), which are considered to be involved in its hydrogen transport and exchange processes, were investigated by positive muon spin relaxation ($μ^+$SR) spectroscopy using muonium (Mu) as a pseudoisotope of hydrogen. Muons implanted into the BaTiO$_{3-x}$H$_x$ perovskite lattice were mainly found in two qualitatively different metastable states. One was assigned to a highly mobile interstitial protonic state, which is commonly observed in perovskite oxides. The other was found to form an entangled two spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ system with the nuclear spin of an H$^-$ ion at the anion site. The structure of the (H,Mu) complex agrees well with that of a neutralized center containing two H$^-$ ions at a doubly charged oxygen vacancy, which was predicted to form in the SrTiO$_{3-δ}$ perovskite lattice by a computational study [Y. Iwazaki $et$ $al$., APL Materials 2, 012103 (2014)]. Above 100 K, interstitial Mu$^+$ diffusion and retrap** to a deep defect were observed, which could be a rate-limiting step of macroscopic Mu/H transport in the BaTiO$_{3-x}$H$_x$ lattice.

K$_3$Cu$_3$AlO$_2$(SO$_4$)$_4$ is a highly one-dimensional spin-1/2 inequilateral diamond-chain antiferromagnet. Spinon continuum and spin-singlet dimer excitations are observed in the inelastic neutron scattering spectra, which is in excellent agreement with a theoretical prediction: a dimer-monomer composite structure, where the dimer is caused by strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling and the monomer forms an almost isolated quantum AFM chain controlling low-energy excitations. Moreover, muon spin rotation/relaxation spectroscopy shows no long-range ordering down to 90~mK, which is roughly three orders of magnitude lower than the exchange interaction of the quantum AFM chain. K$_3$Cu$_3$AlO$_2$(SO$_4$)$_4$ is, thus, regarded as a compound that exhibits a Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid behavior at low temperatures close to the ground state.

However, an isolated negatively charged state (Mu$^-$, an analog of H$^-$) becomes dominant when the compound approaches the state of electride [Ca$_{12}$Al$_{14}$O$_{32}]^{2+}$[$\square_4$2e$^{-}$] as a result of the reduction process. Moreover, the OMu$^-$ state in the pristine specimen exhibits depolarization of paramagnetic origin at low temperatures (below $\sim$30~K), indicating that OMu$^-$ accompanies a loosely bound electron in the cage that can be thermally activated. This suggests that interstitial muons (and hence H) forming a "cage electron-hydroxyl" complex can serve as electron donors in C12A7.

The formation of a short-range magnetic order due to a tiny amount of excess oxygen in the reduced superconducting samples strongly suggest that the Ce-free and Ce-underdoped T'-cuprates are regarded as strongly correlated electron systems.

The hyperfine structure of the interstitial muonium (Mu) in rutile (TiO$_2$, weakly $n$-type) has been identified by means of a muon spin rotation technique. The angle-resolved hyperfine parameters exhibit a tetragonal anisotropy within the $ab$ plane and axial anisotropy with respect to the $\langle 001\rangle$ ($\hat{c}$) axis. This strongly suggests that the Mu is bound to O (forming an OH bond) at an off-center site within a channel along the $\hat{c}$ axis, while the unpaired Mu electron is localized around the neighboring Ti site. The hyperfine parameters are quantitatively explained by a model that considers spin polarization of the unpaired electron at both the Ti and O sites, providing evidence for the formation of Mu as a Ti-O-Mu complex paramagnetic state. The disappearance of the Mu signal above $\sim$10 K suggests that the energy necessary for the promotion of the unpaired electron to the conduction band by thermal activation is of the order of $10^1$ meV. These observations suggest that, while the electronic structure of Mu (and hence H) differs considerably from that of the conventional shallow level donor described by the effective mass model, Mu supplies a loosely bound electron, and thus, serves as a donor in rutile.

We found an intermediate orthorhombic phase between $T_{\rm c2} \sim$~130 K and $T_{\rm c1} \sim$~100 K, whereas a tetragonal phase appears for $T > T_{\rm c2}$ and $T < T_{\rm c1}$. The absence of long-range magnetic order was confirmed by $μ$SR at the reentrant tetragonal phase below $T_{\rm c1}$, where the relative enhancement in the $c$-axis length versus that of the $a$-axis length was observed. However, no clear indication of the lowering of the tetragonal lattice symmetry with superlattice modulation, which is expected in the orbital order state with superstructure of $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals, was observed by SR-XRD below $T_{\rm c1}$. Instead, it was inferred from $μ$SR that a magnetic state developed below $T_{\rm c0} \sim$~10 K, which was characterized by the highly inhomogeneous and fluctuating local magnetic fields down to 30 mK. We argue that the anomalous magnetic ground state below $T_{\rm c0}$ originates from the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations.

Abstract:
In this study, the magnetic ground state of iridium perovskites (Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$, where $n=1$, 2, and $\infty$) was considered using muon spin spectroscopy ($μ$SR). When probed by muons in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ ($n=1,2$), the internal field ($B_{\rm loc}$) showed clear sign of a magnetic order in two stages at transition temperatures $T_{\rm N}\simeq 230$ K and…

In this study, the magnetic ground state of iridium perovskites (Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$, where $n=1$, 2, and $\infty$) was considered using muon spin spectroscopy ($μ$SR). When probed by muons in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ ($n=1,2$), the internal field ($B_{\rm loc}$) showed clear sign of a magnetic order in two stages at transition temperatures $T_{\rm N}\simeq 230$ K and $T_{\rm m}\simeq 90$ K in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and $T_{\rm N}\simeq 280$ K and $T_{\rm m}\simeq 70$ K in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, respectively. In contrast, no long-range magnetic order was observed in orthorhombic SrIrO$_3$ ($n=\infty$). Based on the known magnetic structure in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, we successfully identified muon sites in these compounds from the magnitude of $B_{\rm loc}$ in the first stage ($T_{\rm m}\le T\le T_{\rm N}$). Below $T_{\rm m}$, $B_{\rm loc}$ probed by a fraction of muons occupying sites near the apical oxygen of IrO$_6$ octahedra exhibited a further increase but remained mostly unchanged for sites close to the in-plane oxygen. While such behavior cannot be explained by the alteration of the Ir spin structure, it is consistent with the selective appearance of ordered magnetic moments on the apical oxygen. The oxygen polarization was also in line with the reported magnetization anomalies in these compounds below $\sim T_{\rm m}$. A possible link between the oxygen polarization and ferroelectric (multiferroic) behavior in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ was considered.

The hyperfine structure of the interstitial muonium (Mu) center in rutile (TiO$_2$, weakly $n$-type) has been identified by means of muon spin rotation technique. The angle-resolved hyperfine parameter has a tetragonal anisotropy within the $ab$ plane and axial anisotropy along the $c$ axis, strongly suggesting that Mu simulates the known local structure of interstitial hydrogen (H) located at an off-center position within a channel along $c$ axis, and the electron wave function bound to Mu is highly delocalized (~1.5 nm along $c$ axis, ~0.8 nm for $a$ axis). The ionization energy of Mu ($\rightarrow μ^+ + e^-$) due to thermal activation is deduced to be 1.2(4) meV, as is directly inferred from the disappearance of Mu signal above ~8 K. These observations suggest that electronic level associated with Mu (as well as H) is situated near the bottom of the conduction band, serving as a shallow donor state in rutile.
