Recently, brown dwarfs have emerged as a new topic for the astrophysical studies. These objects are intermediate between solar-type stars and giant gaseous planets. In this article, the analogies between brown dwarfs and the planet Jupiter are considered with a focus on the surrounding plasma. I consider the magnetohydrodynamic version of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (or so called ``interchange instability'') as a minimal model of the expansion of the plasma disc surrounding Jupiter. By comparing the theoretical prediction for the radial expansion rate of the disc with the observations I quantitatively confirm the existing qualitative result, which predicts that the Rayleigh-Taylor instability provides too quick expansion. Therefore, in the realistic plasma disc yet another mechanism must operate which slows down the expansion. I suggest that similar mechanisms take place in the observed radiation belts of brown dwarfs.

Earlier, it was a standard assumption that the entire core of neutron stars is superconducting. However, the matter contents in the inner core has been unknown even qualitatively, because the density of matter in that region is expected to be higher than the nuclear saturation density 0.16 $\mathrm{fm}^{-3}$. As a consequence, no reliable model exists that would describe the neutron star matter in the inner core of neutron stars. Thus, a possibility of presence of normal, nonsuperconducting, plasma in the inner core cannot be excluded as of today. This point is supported by the numerical calculations performed in [1]. The calculations are based on the equation of state and the proton Cooper pairing gap energy derived from the chiral effective field theory. The numerical results show that the superconducting gap goes to zero beyond the depth about 1 km below the crust-core boundary. Given that the stellar radius is of the order of 12 km, therefore the superconducting proton matter is expected to exist only in a thin layer at the tip of the outer core. Recently it has been realized that the symmetry of superconductor is anisotropic in the lasagna region of the pasta phases located at the bottom of the crust. However the question of whether this symmetry is continuous or discreet was unsolved. The numerical calculations performed in [1] have shown that the tunneling rate between the adjacent slabs in the entire range of the corresponding densities is negligibly small. Thus, a discreet model is necessary for the description of the lasagna region. Uncertainties and future directions of the research are discussed.

Solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations based on the unified Barcelona-Catania-Paris-Madrid equation of state (BCPM EoS) and on the pairing gap calculations by Lim and Holt [1], I find that roughly 500 meters of the liquid core (with isotropic and continuous symmetry) and roughly 100-150 meters of the core-crust interface (with anisotropic symmetry) are superconducting, while the rest of the star is normal. To specify whether the superconducting symmetry is discreet in the pasta phase, I study the coexistence of the saturated nuclear and the pure neutron matter using EoS based on the chiral effective field theory (ChEFT). I find that the maximum pressure at coexistence is $P_{*}\simeq0.5\;{\rm MeV\,fm^{-3}}$. To verify the precision of the coexistence calculations I evaluate the surface and the Coulomb corrections using the compressible liquid drop model. I calculate the proton tunneling rate in the perfectly ordered slab region of the pasta phase and conclude that for the chosen EoS, the proton supercurrent tunneling between the adjacent slabs is negligible and the slab region should be described as a discreet symmetry system of quasi two-dimensional layers.

By calculating the current-current response, I find that $\mathbf{v}_p\neq\mathbf{u}_e$ for $l^{-1}<q\llλ^{-1}$ ($l$ is the electron mean free path). I show that at typical realistic parameters the electric field induced by a moving (relative to the electrons) flux tube is not screened by the electron currents. The implication is that the existing picture of the momentum exchange between the electrons and the flux tubes must be reassessed.

In this paper, an effective field theory for proton superconductor (SC) interacting with neutron superfluid (SF), both with scalar order parameters, is developed and applied to the surface energy (SE) of a magnetized SC body in neutron stars (NS). Essentially, the SE studied here differs from the nuclear SE: here, the proton SF density decays to zero while the total proton density is constant across the surface. Interactions between the condensates are parameterized phenomenologically and their effects determined from calculations of a planar SE as the ranges of parameters are varied. The critical Ginzburg-Landau (GL) parameter $κ_c$ which renders the SE equal to zero is found analytically by noting that in a system with vanishing SE the thermodynamic critical MF is equivalent to the upper critical MF. In the case of weak coupling, $κ_c$ is shown to be a linear function of SF-SF density-density coupling, in agreement with the earlier results based on asymptotic intervortex interactions. Numerical simulations corroborate our analytical predictions. Coupling due to the mixed term arising from a scalar product of gradients of the SF densities, which had been considered in the earlier literature, is seen to have practically no effect on the superconductivity type. However, this coupling does produce a frozen wave packet of the SF neutron density localized at the surface. It is shown that the leading contribution from the gradient coupling arises from a novel mixed quantum pressure term, but still does not affect the planar SE. The present calculations provide an initial map of superconductivity types in the phenomenological effective field theory and will serve as a landmark for future studies, which require microscopic calculations of the coupling parameters introduced here phenomenologically.

We consider the elastic constants of phases with nonspherical nuclei, so-called pasta phases, predicted to occur in the inner crust of a neutron star. First, we treat perfectly ordered phases and give numerical estimates for lasagna and spaghetti when the pasta elements are spatially uniform: the results are in order-of-magnitude agreement with the numerical simulations of Caplan, Schneider, and Horowitz, Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 132701 (2018). We then turn to pasta phases without long-range order and calculate upper (Voigt) and lower (Reuss) bounds on the effective shear modulus and find that the lower bound is zero, but the upper bound is nonzero. To obtain better estimates, we then apply the self-consistent formalism and find that this predicts that the shear modulus of the phases without long-range order is zero if the pasta elements are spatially uniform. In numerical simulations, the pasta elements are found to be modulated spatially and we show that this modulation is crucial to obtaining a nonzero elastic moduli for pasta phases without long-range order. In the self-consistent formalism we find that, for lasagna, the effective shear modulus is linear in the elastic constants that do not vanish when the pasta elements are spatially uniform while, for spaghetti, it varies as the square root of these elastic constants. We also consider the behavior of the elastic constant associated with a homologous strain (hydrostatic compression) of the structure of the pasta phases without long-range order.

An important difference compared with usual liquid crystals is that the nucleons are superfluid. We develop the hydrodynamic equations for this system and use them to study collective oscillations. Nucleon superfluidity leads to important qualitative differences in the spectra of these oscillations and also increases their frequencies compared with ordinary liquid crystals. We discuss a number of directions for future work.

A mixture of superconducting and superfluid nuclear liquids of protons coupled to the ultrarelativistic electron gas, and neutrons is considered. In the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) approximation, the energy-momentum (stress) tensor is derived, and the entrainment contribution is found in the explicit form. It is shown that this contribution generates a force density, when a superfluid velocity lag and the magnetic field are simultaneously present. This force may be important in the nuclear "pasta" phase in neutron stars, if the proton and neutron Cooper pairing in the pasta phase is taken into account. It is found that if the liquid-crystalline matter of the pasta phase is superfluid and superconducting, then magnitude of the forces acting upon element of matter at typical magnetic field and the superfluid velocity lag, under certain conditions may become large enough to induce a critical stress in the neutron star crust. As an application, the necessary conditions for triggering of a starquake are found in the pasta phase of neutron stars, assuming that the nuclei are flat slabs in parallel magnetic field. The present model includes two independent local parameters: the superfluid velocity lag and the magnetic field. Possible links between the entrainment force and the magnetar starquake triggering mechanism, and some open problems are discussed.

For large nuclear separations $r$ the contributions from nuclear forces to each of these terms are shown to be nonzero. In the static limit they are equal in magnitude but have opposite signs and they cancel exactly. We analyze earlier results on effective interactions in the light of this finding. We consider the properties of long-wavelength collective modes and, in particular, calculate the degree of mixing between the lattice phonons and the phonons in the neutron superfluid. Using microscopic theory, we calculate the net non-Coulombic contribution to the nucleus--nucleus interaction and show that, for large $r$, the leading term is due to exchange of two phonons and varies as $1/r^7$: it is an analog of the Casimir--Polder interaction between neutral atoms.

We consider the hydrodynamics of the outer core of a neutron star under conditions when both neutrons and protons are superfluid. Starting from the equation of motion for the phases of the wave functions of the condensates of neutron pairs and proton pairs we derive the generalization of the Euler equation for a onecomponent fluid. These equations are supplemented by the conditions for conservation of neutron number and proton number. Of particular interest is the effect of entrainment, the fact that the current of one nucleon species depends on the momenta per nucleon of both condensates. We find that the nonlinear terms in the Euler-like equation contain contributions that have not always been taken into account in previous applications of superfluid hydrodynamics. We apply the formalism to determine the frequency of oscillations about a state with stationary condensates and states with a spatially uniform counterflow of neutrons and protons. The velocities of the coupled sound-like modes of neutrons and protons are calculated from properties of uniform neutron star matter evaluated on the basis of chiral effective field theory. We also derive the condition for the two-stream instability to occur.

Matter in compact stars is presumably polycrystalline and, since the elastic properties of single crystals of such matter are very anisotropic, it is necessary to relate elastic properties of the polycrystal to those of a single crystal. We calculate the effective shear modulus of polycrystalline matter with randomly oriented crystallites using a self-consistent theory that has been very successful in applications to terrestrial materials and show that previous calculations overestimate the shear modulus by approximately 28%.

We show that at densities above that for neutron drip ($\sim4\times10^11$) g cm$^{-3}$ or roughly one thousandth of nuclear matter density, the interstitial neutrons give rise to an attractive interaction between nuclei that renders the lattice unstable. We argue that the likely equilibrium structure is similar to that in displacive ferroelectric materials such as BaTiO$_3$. We show that the quantum vortex tangle is qualitatively different from previously considered superfluids, which reveals deep relations between QT and classical turbulence. The present QT may be generated at arbitrarily small Mach numbers, which is a unique property not found in previously studied superfluids. By numerical solution of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations we find that the Kolmogorov scaling law holds for the incompressible kinetic energy. Guided by analytical models, we solve numerically the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations for two-component Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature. We show that, at moderate amplitudes of the driving force, the instability is stabilized due to non-linear modifications of the oscillation frequency. When the amplitude of the driving force is large enough, we observe detachment of droplets from the Bose-Einstein condensates, resulting in generation of quantum vortices (skyrmions). The zero-temperature non-stationary Gross-Pitaevskii equations are solved numerically; analytical models are developed for the key steps in the process. We demonstrate that if the magnetic force is strong enough, then the condensates may swap their places in the trap due to dynamic quantum interpenetration of the nonlinear matter waves. The swap** is accompanied by development of a modulational instability leading to quasi-turbulent excitations. Unlike the multidimensional Rayleigh-Taylor instability in a similar geometry of two-component quantum fluid systems, quantum interpenetration has no classical analogue. A crossover between the Rayleigh-Taylor instability and the quantum interpenetration in a two-dimensional geometry is demonstrated.

Starting from the Gross-Pitaevskii Lagrangian, the dispersion relation for linear waves and instabilities at the interface is derived by means of a variational approach. A number of diverse dynamical effects for different types of the driving force is demonstrated, which includes the Rayleigh-Taylor instability for a constant force, the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability for a pulse force, dynamic stabilization of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability and onset of the parametric instability for an oscillating force. Gaussian Markovian and non-Markovian stochastic forces are also considered. It is found that the Markovian stochastic force does not produce any average effect on the dynamics of the interface, while the non-Markovian force leads to exponential perturbation growth.
