We present Raman spectroscopy of the polycrystalline Si and Ge films deposited by molecular beam deposition on a dielectric substrate. The Raman study has been made using lasers with different wavelengths. Structural properties of the poly-films have been studied by XRD and TEM. The Raman spectra are characterized by appearance of the additional wide peaks around 500 cm$^{-1}$ and 290 cm$^{-1}$ in the main vibrational bands of TO(c-Si) and TO(c-Ge) phonons, respectively. It is shown that these peaks correspond to scattering in grain boundary area. For the poly-Si films, both a downward shift and an asymmetrical broadening of the vibrational band of TO(c-Si) near 520 cm$^{-1}$ are observed, whereas there is only a symmetric broadening in the spectra of poly-Ge. The Raman line shape has been modeled within the framework of the phonon confinement theory taking into account the sizes of coherent scattering domains obtained using XRD. The model includes a symmetrical band broadening observed in polycrystalline films. It is shown that confinement of phonon propagation might be in the poly-Si films. The phonon dispersion and the density of phonon states have been simulated using density functional theory. It has been found that phonon confinement relates to grain boundaries rather than other extended defects such as twins (multiple twins, twin boundaries), the appearance of which does not lead to significant changes in phonon dispersion and density of phonon states.

The results of RHEED, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy study of silicon and germanium films with the thickness up to 200 nm grown from molecular beams on dielectric Si$_3$N$_4$/SiO$_2$/Si(001) substrates are presented. Noticeable changes of the intensity of the N$-$H and Si$-$N absorption bands have been observed in the IR absorbance spectra as a result of the deposition of the silicon and germanium films. The thicker was the deposited film, the more considerable were the decrease of N$-$H absorption band intensity and the increase in that of the Si$-$N band. This tendency has been observed during the growth of both amorphous and polycrystalline Si or Ge films. The reduction of IR absorption at the band assigned to the N$-$H bond vibration is explained by breaking of these bonds followed by the diffusion of the hydrogen atoms from the Si$_3$N$_4$ layer into the growing film of silicon or germanium. The effect of the deposited film thickness on the diffusion of hydrogen is discussed within a model of the diffusion of hydrogen atoms controlled by the difference in chemical potentials of hydrogen atoms in the dielectric Si$_3$N$_4$ layer and the growing silicon or germanium film. Hydrogen atoms escape from the Si$_3$N$_4$ layer only during the deposition of a Si or Ge film when its thickness gradually grows. The interruption of the film growth stops the migration of hydrogen atoms into the film because of the decline in the chemical potential difference.

Abstract:
New limits on $β^+$EC and ECEC processes in $^{74}$Se have been obtained using a 600 cm$^3$ HPGe detector and an external source consisting of 1600 g of a natural selenium powder. For different $β^+$EC and ECEC transitions (to the ground and excited states) obtained limits are on the level $\sim (0.2-4.8)\times10^{19}$ yr at 90\% C.L. For different $β^+$EC and ECEC transitions (to the ground and excited states) obtained limits are on the level $\sim (0.2-4.8)\times10^{19}$ yr at 90\% C.L. In particular, for the potentially resonant transition into the 1204.2 keV excited state of $^{74}$Ge a lower half-life limit of $1.1\times10^{19}$ yr at 90\% C.L. has been obtained. Possibility to increase the sensitivity of such measurements is discussed.

In this talk we report on the on-going efforts to understand and eventually reject the background at low energy. These efforts have led to the improvement of the neutron shielding and to partial reduction of the background, but still the remaining events are not totally identified. A tritium contamination or muon-induced neutrons are considered as possible sources, simulations and experimental test being still under progress. According to the success of this study we comment the prospects of the experiment as well as those of its future extension, the GEDEON dark matter experiment.

A new exclusion plot has been derived for WIMP-nucleon spin-independent interactions. To obtain this result, 40 days of data from the IGEX detector (energy threshold 4 keV), recently collected, have been analyzed. These data improve the exclusion limits derived from all the other ionization germanium detectors in the mass region from 20 GeV to 200 GeV, where a WIMP supposedly responsible for the annual modulation effect reported by the DAMA experiment would be located. The new IGEX exclusion contour enters, by the first time, the DAMA region by using only raw data, with no background discrimination, and excludes its upper left part. It is also shown that with a moderate improvement of the detector performances, the DAMA region could be fully explored.

A recent upgrade has made it possible to use them in a search for WIMPs. A new exclusion plot has been derived for WIMP-nucleon spin-independent interaction. To obtain this result, 30 days of data from one IGEX detector, which has an energy threshold of ~4 keV, have been considered. These data improve the exclusion limits derived from other germanium diode experiments in the ~50 GeV DAMA region, and show that with a moderate improvement of the background below 10 keV, the DAMA region may be tested with an additional 1 kg-year of exposure.

The measurements of fast neutron flux in the new DULB Laboratory situated at a depth of 4900 m w.e. in the Baksan Neutrino Observatory have been performed. The relative neutron shielding properties of several commonly available natural materials were investigated too. The preliminary results obtained with a high-sensitive fast neutron spectrometer at the level of sensitivity of about 10^(-7) neutron/ (cm^2 sec) are presented and discussed.
