For a continuous state branching process with two types of individuals which are subject to selection and density dependent competition, we characterize the joint evolution of population size, type configurations and genealogies as the unique strong solution of a system of SDE's. Our construction is achieved in the lookdown framework and provides a synthesis as well as a generalization of cases considered separately in two seminal papers by Donnelly and Kurtz (1999), namely fluctuating population sizes under neutrality, and selection with constant population size. As a conceptual core in our approach we introduce the selective lookdown space which is obtained from its neutral counterpart through a state-dependent thinning of ``potential'' selection/competition events whose rates interact with the evolution of the type densities. The updates of the genealogical distance matrix at the ``active'' selection/competition events are obtained through an appropriate sampling from the selective lookdown space. The solution of the above mentioned system of SDE's is then mapped into the joint evolution of population size and symmetrized type configurations and genealogies, i.e. marked distance matrix distributions. By means of Kurtz' Markov map** theorem, we characterize the latter process as the unique solution of a martingale problem. For the sake of transparency we restrict the main part of our presentation to a prototypical example with two types, which contains the essential features. In the final section we outline an extension to processes with multiple types including mutation.

We consider the one-dimensional KPP-equation driven by space-time white noise. We show that for all parameters above the critical value for survival, there exist stochastic wavelike solutions which travel with a deterministic positive linear speed. We further give a sufficient condition on the initial condition of a solution to attain this speed. Our approach is in the spirit of corresponding results for the nearest-neighbor contact process respectively oriented percolation. Here, the main difficulty arises from the moderate size of the parameter and the long range interaction. Stop** times and averaging techniques are used to overcome this difficulty.

We propose a type-dependent branching model with mutation and competition for modeling phylogenies of a virus population. The competition kernel depends for any two virus particles on the particles' types, the total mass of the population as well as genetic information available through the number of nucleotide substitutions separating the virus particles. We consider the evolving phylogenies of this individual based model in the huge population, short reproduction time and frequent mutation regime, and show tightness in the state space of marked metric measure spaces. Due to heterogeneity in the natural branching rates, the phylogenies are in general not ultra-metric. We therefore develop new techniques for verifying a compact containment condition. Finally, we characterize the limit as a solution of a martingale problem.

We give criteria on the existence of a so-called mark function in the context of marked metric measure spaces (mmm-spaces). We give criteria on the existence of a so-called mark function in the context of marked metric measure spaces (mmm-spaces). If an mmm-space admits a mark function, we call it functionally-marked metric measure space (fmm-space). This is not a closed property in the usual marked Gromov-weak topology, and thus we put particular emphasis on the question under which conditions it carries over to a limit. We obtain criteria for deterministic mmm-spaces as well as random mmm-spaces and mmm-space-valued processes. As an example, our criteria are applied to prove that the tree-valued Fleming-Viot dynamics with mutation and selection from [Depperschmidt, Greven, Pfaffelhuber, Ann. Appl. Probab. '12] admits a mark function at all times, almost surely. Thereby, we fill a gap in a former proof of this fact, which used a wrong criterion.
Furthermore, the subspace of fmm-spaces, which is dense and not closed, is investigated in detail. We show that there exists a metric that induces the marked Gromov-weak topology on this subspace and is complete. Therefore, the space of fmm-spaces is a Polish space. We also construct a decomposition into closed sets which are related to the case of uniformly equicontinuous mark functions.

We consider an approximating sequence of interacting population models with branching, mutation and competition. Each individual is characterized by its trait and the traits of its ancestors. Birth- and death-events happen at exponential times. Traits are hereditarily transmitted unless mutation occurs. The present model is an extension of the model used in [Méléard and Tran, EJP, 2012], where for large populations with small individual biomasses and under additional assumptions, the diffusive limit is shown to converge to a nonlinear historical superprocess. The main goal of the present article is to verify a compact containment condition in the more general setup of Polish trait-spaces and general mutation kernels that allow for a dependence on the parent's trait. As a by-product, a result on the paths of individuals is obtained. An application to evolving genealogies on marked metric measure spaces is mentioned where genealogical distance, counted in terms of the number of births without mutation, can be regarded as a trait. Because of the use of exponential times in the modeling of birth- and death-events the analysis of the modulus of continuity of the trait-history of a particle plays a major role in obtaining appropriate bounds.

Recently, the scaling limit of cluster sizes for critical inhomogeneous random graphs of rank-1 type having finite variance but infinite third moment degrees was obtained (see previous work by Bhamidi, van der Hofstad and van Leeuwaarden). It was proved that when the degrees obey a power law with exponent in the interval (3,4), the sequence of clusters ordered in decreasing size and scaled appropriately converges as n goes to infinity to a sequence of decreasing non-degenerate random variables.
Here, we study the tails of the limit of the rescaled largest cluster, i.e., the probability that the scaling limit of the largest cluster takes a large value u, as a function of u. This extends a related result of Pittel for the Erdős-Rényi random graph to the setting of rank-1 inhomogeneous random graphs with infinite third moment degrees. We make use of delicate large deviations and weak convergence arguments.

This paper deals with the large deviations behavior of a stochastic process called thinned Levy process. This process appeared recently as a stochastic-process limit in the context of critical inhomogeneous random graphs. The process has a strong negative drift, while we are interested in the rare event of the process being positive at large times. To characterize this rare event, we identify a tilted measure. This presents some challenges inherent to the power-law nature of the thinned Levy process. General principles prescribe that the tilt should follow from a variational problem, but in the case of the thinned Levy process this involves a Riemann sum that is hard to control. We choose to approximate the Riemann sum by its limiting integral, derive the first-order correction term, and prove that the tilt that follows from the corresponding approximate variational problem is sufficient to establish the large deviations results.

The present paper brings a new class of interacting jump processes into focus. We start from a single-colony $C^Λ$-process, which arises as the continuum-mass limit of a $Λ$-Cannings individual-based population model, where $Λ$ is a finite non-negative measure that describes the offspring mechanism. After that we introduce a system of hierarchically interacting $C^Λ$-processes, where the interaction comes from migration and reshuffling-resampling based on measures $(Λ_k)_{k}$ both acting in $k$-blocks of the hierarchical group. We refer to this system as the $C_N^{c,Λ}$-process. The dual process of the $C_N^{c,Λ}$-process is a spatial coalescent with multi-level block coalescence.
For the above system we carry out a full renormalisation analysis in the hierarchical mean-field limit $N\to\infty$. Our main result is that, in the limit as $N\to\infty$, on each scale $k\in\mathbb{N}_0$ the $k$-block averages of the $C_N^{c,Λ}$-process converge to a random process that is a superposition of a $C^{Λ_k}$-process and a Fleming-Viot process, the latter with a volatility $d_k$ and with a drift of strength $c_k$ towards the limiting $(k+1)$-block average. It turns out that $d_k$ is a function of $c_l$ and $Λ_l$ for all $0\leq l<k$. Thus, it is through the volatility that the renormalisation manifests itself.
We discuss the implications of the scaling of $d_k$ for the behaviour on large space-time scales of the $C_N^{c,Λ}$-process. We compare the outcome with what is known from the renormalisation analysis of hierarchically interacting Fleming-Viot diffusions, pointing out several new features. We obtain a new classification for when the process exhibits clustering, respectively, exhibits local coexistence. Finally, we show that for finite $N$ the same dichotomy between clustering and local coexistence holds as for $N\to\infty$.
