Random Problems in Mathematical Physics
Abstract: This PhD thesis deals with a number of different problems in mathematical physics with the common thread that they have probabilistic aspects. The problems all stem from mathematical studies of lattice systems in statistical and quantum physics; however beyond that, the selection of the concrete problems is to a certain extent arbitrary. This thesis consists of an introduction and seven papers.

Decoherence is an echo of Anderson localization in open quantum systems
Abstract: We study the time evolution of single-particle quantum states described by a Lindblad master equation with local terms. By means of a geometric resolvent equation derived for Lindblad generators, we establish a finite-volume-type criterion for the decay of the off-diagonal matrix elements in the position basis of the time-evolved or steady states. This criterion is shown to yield exponential decay… ▽ More

Going Beyond Gadgets: The Importance of Scalability for Analogue Quantum Simulators
Abstract: We propose a theoretical framework for analogue quantum simulation to capture the full scope of experimentally realisable simulators, motivated by a set of fundamental criteria first introduced by Cirac and Zoller. Our framework is consistent with Hamiltonian encodings used in complexity theory, is stable under noise, and encompasses a range of possibilities for experiment, such as the simulation… ▽ More

The Uniform Even Subgraph and Its Connection to Phase Transitions of Graphical Representations of the Ising Model
Abstract: The uniform even subgraph is intimately related to the Ising model, the random-cluster model, the random current model and the loop $\mathrm{O}$(1) model. In this paper, we first prove that the uniform even subgraph of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ percolates for $d \geq 2$ using its characterisation as the Haar measure on the group of even graphs. We then tighten the result by showing that the loop… ▽ More

Stochastic cellular automaton model of culture formation
Abstract: We introduce a stochastic cellular automaton as a model for culture and border formation. The model can be conceptualized as a game where the expansion rate of cultures is quantified in terms of their area and perimeter in such a way that approximately geometrically round cultures get a competitive advantage. We first analyse the model with periodic boundary conditions, where we study how the mode… ▽ More

Spectra of generators of Markovian evolution in the thermodynamic limit: From non-Hermitian to full evolution via tridiagonal Laurent matrices
Abstract: We determine spectra of single-particle translation-invariant Lindblad operators on the infinite line. In the case where the Hamiltonian is given by the discrete Laplacian and the Lindblad operators are rank $r$, finite range and translates of each other, we obtain a representation of the Lindbladian as a direct integral of finite range bi-infinite Laurent matrices with rank-$r$-perturbations. By… ▽ More

Strict monotonicity, continuity and bounds on the Kertész line for the random-cluster model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$
Abstract: Ising and Potts models can be studied using the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation through the Edwards-Sokal coupling. This adapts to the setting where the models are exposed to an external field of strength $h>0$. In this representation, which is also known as the random-cluster model, the Kertész line separates the two regions of parameter space according to the existence of an infinite cluster… ▽ More

Mass scaling of the near-critical 2D Ising model using random currents
Abstract: We examine the Ising model at its critical temperature with an external magnetic field $h a^{\frac{15}{8}}$ on $a\mathbb{Z}^2$ for $a,h >0$. A new proof of exponential decay of the truncated two-point correlation functions is presented. It is proven that the mass (inverse correlation length) is of the order of $h^\frac{8}{15}$ in the limit $h \to 0$. This was previously proven with CLE-methods in… ▽ More

On monotonicity and couplings of random currents and the loop-$\mathrm{O}(1)$-model
Abstract: Using recent couplings we provide counterexamples to monotonicity properties of percolation models related to graphical representations of the Ising model. We further prove a new coupling of the double random current model to the loop-$\mathrm{O}(1)$-model.

Combinatorial classification of quantum lens spaces
Abstract: We answer the question of how large the dimension of a quantum lens space must be, compared to the primary parameter $r$, for the isomorphism class to depend on the secondary parameters. Since classification results in C*-algebra theory reduces this question to one concerning a certain kind of $SL$-equivalence of integer matrices of a special form, our approach is entirely combinatorial and based… ▽ More

On a Conjecture on the Representation of Positive Integers as the Sum of Three Terms of the Sequence $\left\lfloor \frac{n^2}{a} \right\rfloor$
Abstract: We prove some cases of a conjecture by Farhi on the representation of every positive integer as the sum of three terms of the sequence $ \left\lfloor\frac{n^2}{a}\right\rfloor$. This is done by generalizing a method used by Farhi in his original paper.
