An Isoperimetric Inequality and Pursuit-Evasion Games on Triangular Grid Graphs
Abstract: In this paper, we prove an isoperimetric inequality for the triangular grid graph which was conjectured by Adams, Gibson, and Pfaffinger, using the compression technique of Bollobás and Leader. Moreover, we apply the isoperimetric inequality to the Zero-Visibility Search game and Lions and Contamination game in order to obtain lower bounds for the inspection number and lion number respectively. We… ▽ More

Union vertex-distinguishing edge colorings
Abstract: The union vertex-distinguishing chromatic index $χ'_\cup(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest natural number $k$ such that the edges of $G$ can be assigned nonempty subsets of $[k]$ so that the union of the subsets assigned to the edges incident to each vertex is different. We prove that… ▽ More

Multithreshold multipartite graphs with small parts
Abstract: A graph is a $k$-threshold graph with thresholds $θ_1, θ_2, \dots, θ_k$ if we can assign a real number $r_v$ to each vertex $v$ such that for any two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$, $uv$ is an edge if and only if the number of thresholds not exceeding $r_u+r_v$ is odd. The threshold number of a graph is the smallest $k$ for which it is a $k$-threshold graph. Multithreshold graphs were introduced by… ▽ More

Monochromatic Edges in Complete Multipartite Hypergraphs
Abstract: Consider the following problem. In a school with three classes containing $n$ students each, given that their genders are unknown, find the minimum possible number of triples of same-gender students not all of which are from the same class. Muaengwaeng asked this question and conjectured that the minimum scenario occurs when the classes are all boy, all girl and half-and-half. In this paper, we so… ▽ More

On the Existence of Zero-Sum Perfect Matchings of Complete Graphs
Abstract: In this paper, we prove that given a 2-edge-coloured complete graph $K_{4n}$ that has the same number of edges of each colour, we can always find a perfect matching with an equal number of edges of each colour. This solves a problem posed by Caro, Hansberg, Lauri, and Zarb. The problem is also independently solved by Ehard, Mohr, and Rautenbach.

The graph grabbing game on blow-ups of trees and cycles
Abstract: The graph grabbing game is played on a non-negatively weighted connected graph by Alice and Bob who alternately claim a non-cut vertex from the remaining graph, where Alice plays first, to maximize the weights on their respective claimed vertices at the end of the game when all vertices have been claimed. Seacrest and Seacrest conjectured that Alice can secure at least half of the weight of every… ▽ More

A strategy for Isolator in the Toucher-Isolator game on trees
Abstract: In the Toucher-Isolator game, introduced recently by Dowden, Kang, Mikalački and Stojaković, Toucher and Isolator alternately claim an edge from a graph such that Toucher aims to touch as many vertices as possible, while Isolator aims to isolate as many vertices as possible, where Toucher plays first. Among trees with $n$ vertices, they showed that the star is the best choice for Isolator and they… ▽ More

Long cycles in Hamiltonian graphs
Abstract: We prove that if an $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $3$ contains a Hamiltonian cycle, then it contains another cycle of length $n-o(n)$; this implies, in particular, that a well-known conjecture of Sheehan from 1975 holds asymptotically. Our methods, which combine constructive, poset-based techniques and non-constructive, parity-based arguments, may be of independent interest.

Partite Saturation of Complete Graphs
Abstract: We study the problem of determining $sat(n,k,r)$, the minimum number of edges in a $k$-partite graph $G$ with $n$ vertices in each part such that $G$ is $K_r$-free but the addition of an edge joining any two non-adjacent vertices from different parts creates a $K_r$. Improving recent results of Ferrara, Jacobson, Pfender and Wenger, and generalizing a recent result of Roberts, we define a function… ▽ More

Generalised Majority Colourings of Digraphs
Abstract: The purpose of this note is to draw attention to problems related to a concept called majority colouring recently studied by Kreutzer, Oum, Seymour, van der Zypen and Wood. They raised a problem of determining, for a natural number $k$, the smallest number $m=m(k)$ such that every digraph can be coloured with $m$ colours where each vertex has the same colour as at most $1/k$ proportion of its out-… ▽ More

Frustrated Triangles
Abstract: A triple of vertices in a graph is a \emph{frustrated triangle} if it induces an odd number of edges. We study the set $F_n\subset[0,\binom{n}{3}]$ of possible number of frustrated triangles $f(G)$ in a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices. We prove that about two thirds of the numbers in $[0,n^{3/2}]$ cannot appear in $F_n$, and we characterise the graphs $G$ with $f(G)\in[0,n^{3/2}]$. More precisely, our m… ▽ More

Disjoint induced subgraphs of the same order and size
Abstract: For a graph $G$, let $f(G)$ be the largest integer $k$ for which there exist two vertex-disjoint induced subgraphs of $G$ each on $k$ vertices, both inducing the same number of edges. We prove that $f(G) \ge n/2 - o(n)$ for every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices. This answers a question of Caro and Yuster.

Separating path systems
Abstract: We study separating systems of the edges of a graph where each member of the separating system is a path. We conjecture that every $n$-vertex graph admits a separating path system of size $O(n)$ and prove this in certain interesting special cases. In particular, we establish this conjecture for random graphs and graphs with linear minimum degree. We also obtain tight bounds on the size of a minima… ▽ More

Approximations to $m$-coloured complete infinite hypergraphs
Abstract: Given an edge colouring of a graph with a set of $m$ colours, we say that the graph is (exactly) $m$-coloured if each of the colours is used. In 1999, Stacey and Weidl, partially resolving a conjecture of Erickson from 1994, showed that for a fixed natural number $m>2$ and for all sufficiently large $k$, there is a $k$-colouring of the complete graph on $\mathbb{N}$ such that no complete infinite… ▽ More

A canonical Ramsey theorem for exactly $m$-coloured complete subgraphs
Abstract: Given an edge colouring of a graph with a set of $m$ colours, we say that the graph is (exactly) $m$-coloured if each of the colours is used. We consider edge colourings of the complete graph on $\mathbb{N}$ with infinitely many colours and show that either one can find an $m$-coloured complete subgraph for every natural number $m$ or there exists an infinite subset $X \subset \mathbb{N}$ coloured… ▽ More
