Abstract:
We report on the quantum criticality of Pr$_3$Ru$_4$Sn$_{13}$ revealed by our new material research. Pr$_3$Ru$_4$Sn$_{13}$ has been synthesized by flux growth and characterized by single X-ray, powder X-ray, and powder neutron diffraction measurements. The compound adopts a Yb$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$-type structure with a cubic Pm$\bar{3}$n. From the magnetization at 1 T, the effective magnetic moment…

From the magnetization at 1 T, the effective magnetic moment was estimated to be 3.58 $μ_B$ per Pr$^{3+}$, suggesting that the magnetism is mainly contributed by Pr$^{3+}$ ions. The specific heat and magnetization show an anomaly at $T_{N} = 7.5$ ~ K owing to the phase transition. The muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) time spectra exhibit clear oscillations below $T_N$. This suggests that the phase is magnetically ordered. The volume fraction of the magnetic phase estimated from the initial asymmetry is around ten percent. In addition, spin fluctuations were observed at low temperatures. These results provide microscopic evidence that the material is closest to the antiferromagnetically quantum critical point with a partial order among Pr$_3$$T_4$Sn$_{13}$ ($T= $ Co, Ru, Rh).

We have performed soft-X-ray angle resolved photoemission for metallic V$_2$O$_3$. We have performed soft-X-ray angle resolved photoemission for metallic V$_2$O$_3$. Combining a micro focus beam (40 x 65 $μ$m$^2$) and micro positioning techniques with a long working distance microscope, we have succeeded in observing band dispersions from tiny cleavage surfaces with typical size of the several tens of $μ$m. The photoemission spectra show a clear position dependence reflecting the morphology of the cleaved sample surface. By selecting high quality flat regions on the sample surface, we have succeeded in band map** using both photon-energy and polar-angle dependences, opening the door to three-dimensional ARPES for typical three dimensional correlated materials where large cleavage planes are rarely obtained.

The microscopic magnetic properties of high-quality GdN thin films have been investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements. Detailed temperature dependence ESR measurements have shown the existence of two ferromagnetic components at lower temperatures which was not clear from the previous magnetization measurements. The temperature, where the resonance shift occurs for the major ferromagnetic component, seems to be consistent with the Curie temperature obtained from the previous magnetization measurement. On the other hand, the divergence of line width is observed around 57 K for the minor ferromagnetic component. The magnetic anisotropies of GdN thin films have been obtained by the analysis of FMR angular dependence observed at 4.2 K. Combining the X-ray diffraction results, the correlation between the magnetic anisotropies and the lattice constants is discussed.

We show that the strongly correlated 4f-orbital symmetry of the ground state is revealed by linear dichroism in core-level photoemission spectra as we have discovered for YbRh2Si2 and YbCu2Si2. Theoretical analysis tells us that the linear dichroism reflects the anisotropic charge distributions resulting from crystalline electric field. We have successfully determined the ground-state 4f symmetry for both compounds from the polarization-dependent angle-resolved core-level spectra at a low temperature well below the first excitation energy. The excited-state symmetry is also probed by temperature dependence of the linear dichroism where the high measuring temperatures are of the order of the crystal-field-splitting energies.
