Abstract:
The entire magnetization process of TlCuCl$_3$ has been experimentally investigated up to 100 T employing the single-turn technique. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ is observed to be 86.1 T at 2 K. A convex slope of the $M$-$H$ curve between the lower and upper critical fields ($H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$) is clearly observed, which indicates that a particle-hole symmetry is broken in TlCuCl$_3$. By quantum Monte Carlo simulation and the bond-operator theory method, we find that the particle-hole symmetry breaking results from strong inter-dimer interactions.

An osmium chloride with the chemical formula of OsxCl3 (x = 0.81) was synthesized and its crystal structure and thermodynamic properties were investigated. OsxCl3 crystallizes in a layered CdCl2-type structure with the triangular lattice partially occupied by Os ions on average. However, on microscopic length scales, the triangular lattice is composed of nano-domains with a honeycomb arrangement of Os ions, as observed by electron microscopy and Raman scattering experiments. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements revealed an absence of magnetic long-range order down to 0.08 K, while a broad peak in heat capacity at 0.15 K may indicate a short-range order in the local honeycomb lattice. OsxCl3 may exhibit certain aspects of the Kitaev spin liquid that are expected for a perfect honeycomb lattice of osmium trichloride.

In zeolite low-silica X (LSX), beta-cages with the inside diameter of approx 7 AA{} are arrayed in a diamond structure. Among them, supercages with the inside diameter of approx 13 AA{} are formed and arrayed in a diamond structure by the sharing of windows with the inside diameter of approx 8 AA{}. The chemical formula of zeolite LSX used in the present study is given by Na$_{x}$K$_{12-x}$Al$_{12}$Si$_{12}$O$_{48}$ per supercage (or beta-cage), where Na$_{x}$K$_{12-x}$ and Al$_{12}$Si$_{12}$O$_{48}$ are the exchangeable cations of zeolite LSX and the aluminosilicate framework, respectively. Na-K alloy clusters are incorporated in these cages by the loading of guest K metal at $n$K atoms per supercage (or beta-cage). A N'eel's N-type ferrimagnetism has been observed at $n = 7.8$ for $x = 4$. In the present paper, optical, magnetic and electrical properties are studied in detail mainly for $x = 4$. Ferrimagnetic properties are observed at $6.5 < n < 8.5$. At the same time, the Curie constant suddenly increases. An optical reflection band of beta-cage clusters at 2.8 eV is observed at $n > 6.5$ in accordance with the sudden increase in the Curie constant. An electrical resistivity indicates metallic values at $n$ gtrapprox 6, because a metallic state is realized in the energy band of supercage clusters. The ferrimagnetism is explained by the antiferromagnetic interaction between the magnetic sublattice of itinerant electron ferromagnetism at supercage clusters and that of localized moments at beta-cage clusters. The electrical resistivity in ferrimagnetic samples at $n = 8.2$ for $x = 4$ increases extraordinarily at very low temperatures, such as approx $10^6$ times larger than the value at higher temperatures. Observed anomalies in the electrical resistivity resembles the Kondo insulator, but itinerant electrons of narrow energy band of supercage clusters are ferromagnetic.

We discuss the implications that new magnetocaloric, thermal expansion and magnetostriction data in $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ single crystals have on its temperature-field phase diagram and uncover the magnetic-field dependence of an apparent energy gap structure $Δ(H)$ that evolves when the low temperature antiferromagnetic order is suppressed. We show that, depending on how the thermal expansion data is modeled, $Δ(H)$ can show a cubic field dependence and remain finite at zero field, consistent with the pure Kitaev model hosting itinerant Majorana fermions and localized $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ fluxes. Our magnetocaloric effect data provides, below $1\,\mathrm{K}$, unambiguous evidence for dissipative phenomena at $H_{\mathrm{c}}$, smoking gun for a first order phase transition. Our results, on the other hand, show little support for a phase transition from a QSL to a polarized paramagnetic state above $H_{\mathrm{c}}$.

Combined experimental and modeling studies of the magnetocaloric effect, ultrasound, and magnetostriction were performed on single-crystal samples of the spin-dimer system Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ in large magnetic fields, to probe the spin-correlated regime in the proximity of the field-induced XY-type antiferromagnetic order also referred to as a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons. The magnetocaloric effect, measured under adiabatic conditions, reveals details of the field-temperature ($H,T$) phase diagram, a dome characterized by critical magnetic fields $H_{c1}$ = 30.4 T, $H_{c2}$ = 62 T, and a single maximum ordering temperature $T_{\rm max}(45~$T$)\simeq$8 K. The sample temperature was observed to drop significantly as the magnetic field is increased, even for initial temperatures above $T_{\rm max}$, indicating a significant magnetic entropy associated to the field-induced closure of the spin gap. The ultrasound and magnetostriction experiments probe the coupling between the lattice degrees of freedom and the magnetism in Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$. Our experimental results are qualitatively reproduced by a minimalistic phenomenological model of the exchange-striction by which sound waves renormalize the effective exchange couplings.

We demonstrate that the cluster-glass state emerges as ferromagnetic quantum criticality is avoided in itinerant ferromagnet Sr1-x(La0.5K0.5)xRuO3. In this compound, the ferromagnetic order is suppressed by increasing x, and then disappears at the critical concentration: x=0.5. In this x range, the present study reveals that no prominent feature is ascribed to the quantum critical fluctuations in specific heat. Instead, ac magnetic susceptibility exhibits a broad peak due to spontaneous spin freezing, and the peak temperature depends significantly on the frequency of the applied ac magnetic field. Furthermore, specific heat is enhanced within a wide temperature range, whereas specific heat shows no salient anomaly associated with spin freezing. These features are characteristics of the formation of cluster-glass; in particular, the observed frequency variations in ac magnetic susceptibility are well described by the Vogel-Fulcher law. We compare the features concerning the suppression of the ferromagnetic order in this doped compound with those in isostructural Ca- and La-doped SrRuO3, and suggest that a local correlated disorder effect and the very small coherence of itinerant Ru 4d electrons are responsible for the cluster-glass formation instead of the quantum phase transition in Sr1-x(La0.5K0.5)xRuO3.

We propose a data-driven technique to estimate the spin Hamiltonian, including uncertainty, from multiple physical quantities. Using our technique, an effective model of KCu$_4$P$_3$O$_{12}$ is determined from the experimentally observed magnetic susceptibility and magnetization curves with various temperatures under high magnetic fields. An effective model, which is the quantum Heisenberg model on a zigzag chain with eight spins having $J_1= -8.54 \pm 0.51 \{\rm meV}$, $J_2 = -2.67 \pm 1.13 \{\rm meV}$, $J_3 = -3.90 \pm 0.15 \{\rm meV}$, and $J_4 = 6.24 \pm 0.95 \{\rm meV}$, describes these measured results well. These uncertainties are successfully determined by the noise estimation. The relations among the estimated magnetic interactions or physical quantities are also discussed. The obtained effective model is useful to predict hard-to-measure properties such as spin gap, spin configuration at the ground state, magnetic specific heat, and magnetic entropy.

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of FeSe under the in-plane magnetic fields using torque magnetometry, specific heat, magnetocaloric measurements. Below the upper critical field Hc2, we observed the field-induced anomalies at H1 ~ 15 T and H2 ~ 22 T near H//ab and below a characteristic temperature T* ~ 2 K. The transition magnetic fields H1 and H2 exhibit negligible dependence on both temperature and field orientation. This contrasts with the strong temperature and angle dependence of Hc2, suggesting that these anomalies are attributed to the field-induced phase transitions, originating from the inherent spin-density-wave instability of quasiparticles near the superconducting gap minima or possible Flude-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in the highly spin-polarized Fermi surfaces. Our observations imply that FeSe, an atypical multiband superconductor with extremely small Fermi energies, represents a unique model system for stabilizing unusual superconducting orders beyond the Pauli limit.

We investigated the thermodynamic property of the heavy fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ in pulsed high magnetic fields. The superconducting transition in zero field was observed at $T_{\rm c}$=1.65 K as a sharp heat capacity jump. Magnetocaloric effect measurements in pulsed-magnetic fields obviously detected a thermodynamic anomaly accompanied by a first-order metamagnetic transition at $μ$$_{0}$$H_{\rm m}$=36.0 T when the fields are applied nearly along the hard-magnetization $b$-axis. From the results of heat capacity measurements in magnetic fields, we found a drastic diverging electronic heat capacity coefficient of the normal state $γ$$_{\rm N}$ with approaching $H_{\rm m}$. Comparing with the previous works via the magnetic Clausius-Clapeyron relation, we unveil the thermodynamic details of the metamagnetic transition. The enhancement of the effective mass observed as the development of $γ_{\rm N}$ indicates that quantum fluctuation strongly evolves around $H_{\rm m}$; it assists the superconductivity emerging even in extremely high fields.

High-resolution time-of-flight powder neutron diffraction and high-field magnetization were measured to investigate the magnetic structure and existence of a field-induced magnetic phase transition in the distorted kagome antiferromagnet Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. Upon cooling from room temperature, the compound undergoes a structural phase transition at $T_\textrm{t}=185$ K from the rhombohedral space group $R\bar{3}m$ with the perfect kagome spin network to the monoclinic space group $P2_1/n$ with the distorted kagome planes. The distortion results in three inequivalent exchange interactions among the $S=1/2$ Cu$^{2+}$ spins that magnetically order below $T_\textrm{N}=20.2$ K. Magnetization measured with a magnetic field applied within the kagome plane reveals small in-plane ferromagnetism resulting from spin canting. On the other hand, the out-of-plane magnetization does not show a clear hysteresis loop of the ferromagnetic component nor a prominent anomaly up to 170 T, with the exception of the subtle knee-like bend around 90 T, which could indicate the 1/3 magnetization plateau. The combined analysis using the irreducible representations of the magnetic space groups and magnetic structure refinement on the neutron powder diffraction data suggests that the magnetic moments order in the magnetic space group $P2_1'/n'$ with the all-in-all-out spin structure, which by symmetry allows for the in-plane canting, consistent with the in-plane ferromagnetism observed in the magnetization.

However, the exchange interaction $J/k_{\mathrm{B}}\simeq19$ K is much greater than that observed in the tungsten system. At zero magnetic field, Ba$_2$La$_2$NiTe$_2$O$_{12}$ undergoes successive magnetic phase transitions at $T_{\mathrm{N}1}=9.8$ K and $T_{\mathrm{N}2}=8.9$ K. The ground state is accompanied by a weak ferromagnetic moment. These results indicate that the ground-state spin structure is a triangular structure in a plane perpendicular to the triangular lattice owing to the small easy-axis-type anisotropy. The magnetization curve exhibits the one-third plateau characteristic of a two-dimensional triangular-lattice Heisenberg-like antiferromagnet. Exchange constants are also evaluated using density functional theory (DFT). The DFT results demonstrate the large difference in the exchange constants between tellurium and tungsten systems and the good two-dimensionality of the tellurium system.

Search for a new quantum state of matter emerging in a crystal is one of recent trends in condensed matter physics. For magnetic materials, geometrical frustration and high magnetic field are two key ingredients to realize it: a conventional magnetic order is possibly destroyed by competing interactions (frustration) and is replaced by an exotic state that is characterized in terms of quasiparticles, that are magnons, and the magnetic field can control the density and chemical potential of the magnons. Here we show that a synthetic copper mineral, Cd-kapellasite, comprising a kagome lattice made of corner-sharing triangles of Cu2+ ions carrying spin-1/2 exhibits an unprecedented series of fractional magnetization plateaux in ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 160 T, which may be interpreted as crystallizations of emergent magnons localized on the hexagon of the kagome lattice. Our observation reveals a novel type of particle physics realized in a highly frustrated magnet.

The magnetic and dielectric properties of the multiferroic triangular lattice magnet compound alpha-NaFeO2 were studied by magnetization, specific heat, dielectric permittivity, and pyroelectric current measurements and by neutron diffraction experiments using single crystals grown by a hydrothermal synthesis method. This work produced magnetic field (in the monoclinic ab-plane, B_ab, and along the c*-axis, B_c) versus temperature magnetic phase diagrams, including five and six magnetically ordered phases in B_ab and along B_c, respectively. Comparing the polarization direction to the magnetic structures in the different ferroelectric phases, we conclude that the extended inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya mechanism expressed by the orthogonal components p1 ~ rij x (Si x Sj ) and p2 ~ Si x Sj can explain the polarization directions. Based on calculations incorporating exchange interactions up to fourth-nearest-neighbor (NN) couplings, we infer that competition among antiferromagnetic second NN interactions in the triangular lattice plane, as well as weak interplane antiferromagnetic interactions, are responsible for the rich phase diagrams of alpha-NaFeO2.

Magnetization, specific heat, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements are carried out to clarify the low-energy excitations for the S = 1/2 polyhedral clusters {Mo$_{72}$V$_{30}$} and {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$}. The clusters provide unique model systems of Kagomé network on a quasi-sphere. The linear field variation of magnetization at low temperatures indicates that the ground state is singlet for both clusters. The temperature and the magnetic field dependence of specific heat shows a distinct difference between two clusters with differing structural symmetries. In {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$} with I$_h$ symmetry, the existence of the several tens of low-energy singlet excited states below the lowest triplet excited state is revealed. The specific heat of the slightly distorted {Mo$_{72}$V$_{30}$} with D$_{5h}$ symmetry leads to a drastic decrease of the singlet contribution, which is consistent with the partial lifting of the frustration and the decrease of degenerated low-energy states. The singlet excitation existence is confirmed further by the temperature dependence of the ESR spectra. Comprehensive experimental studies have demonstrated unique low-energy excitations of the spherical Kagomé networks and their sensitivity to the cluster symmetry.

We report on the experimental results of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electron spin resonance (ESR), and high-field magnetization measurements on a polycrystalline sample of the spin-$1/2$ distorted honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnet Cu$_2$(pymca)$_3$(ClO$_4$). Magnetic susceptibility shows a broad peak at about 25~K, which is typical of a low dimensional antiferromagnet, and no long range magnetic order is observed down to 0.6~K in the specific heat measurements. Magnetization curve up to 70~T at 1.4~K shows triple stepwise jumps. Assuming three different exchange bonds $J_{\rm A}$, $J_{\rm B}$ and $J_{\rm C}$ from the structure, the calculated magnetization curve reproduces the observed one when $J_{\rm A}/k_{\rm B} = 43.7~{\rm K}$, $J_{\rm B}/J_{\rm A} = 1$ and $J_{\rm C}/J_{\rm A} = 0.2$ except the magnetization near 70~T, where the observed magnetization indicates another step while the calculated magnetization becomes saturated. The relationship between magnetization plateaus and exchange bonds is discussed based on the numerical calculations.

We report our combined experimental and theoretical study of magnetoelectric properties of an antiferromagnet Sr(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$, in comparison with the isostructurals Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ and Pb(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. The family of compounds commonly possesses a low-symmetric magnetic unit called the square cupola, which is a source of magnetoelectric responses associated with the magnetic multipoles activated under simultaneous breaking of spatial inversion and time reversal symmetries. Measuring the full magnetization curves and the magnetic-field profiles of dielectric constant for Sr(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ and comparing them with the theoretical analyses by the cluster mean-field theory, we find that the effective $S=1/2$ spin model, which was used for the previous studies for Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ and Pb(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$, well explains the experimental results by tuning the model parameters. Furthermore, elaborating the phase diagram of the model, we find that the square cupolas could host a variety of magnetic multipoles, i.e., monopole, toroidal moment, and quadrupole tensor, depending on the parameters that could be modulated by deformations of the magnetic square cupolas. Our results not only provide a microscopic understanding of the series of the square cupola compounds, but also stimulate further exploration of the magnetoelectric behavior arising from cluster multipoles harboring in low-symmetric magnetic units.

Topological insulators and semimetals as well as unconventional iron-based superconductors have attracted major recent attention in condensed matter physics. Previously, however, little overlap has been identified between these two vibrant fields, even though the principal combination of topological bands and superconductivity promises exotic unprecedented avenues of superconducting states and Majorana bound states (MBSs), the central building block for topological quantum computation. Along with progressing laser-based spin-resolved and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) towards high energy and momentum resolution, we have resolved topological insulator (TI) and topological Dirac semimetal (TDS) bands near the Fermi level ($E_{\text{F}}$) in the iron-based superconductors Li(Fe,Co)As and Fe(Te,Se), respectively. The TI and TDS bands can be individually tuned to locate close to $E_{\text{F}}$ by carrier do**, allowing to potentially access a plethora of different superconducting topological states in the same material. Our results reveal the generic coexistence of superconductivity and multiple topological states in iron-based superconductors, rendering these materials a promising platform for high-$T_{\text{c}}$ topological superconductivity.

We present a novel hydrated layered manganate MgMn$_3$O$_7$$\cdot$3H$_2$O as a maple-leaf-lattice (MLL) antiferromagnet candidate. The MLL is obtained by regularly depleting 1/7 of the lattice points from a triangular lattice so that the magnetic connectivity $z = 5$ and is thus intermediately frustrated between the triangular ($z = 6$) and kagomé ($z = 4$) lattices. In MgMn$_3$O$_7$$\cdot$3H$_2$O, the Mn$^{4+}$ ions, carrying Heisenberg spin 3/2, form a regular MLL lattice in the quasi-two-dimensional structure. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements using a hydrothermally-prepared powder sample reveal successive antiferromagnetic transitions at 5 and 15 K. A high-field magnetization curve up to 60 T at 1.3 K exhibits a multi-step plateau-like anomaly. We discuss the unique frustration of the MLL antiferromagnet in which the chiraldegree of freedom may play an important role.

We perform a combined experimental and theoretical study of a magnetic-field ($B$) induced evolution of magnetic and ferroelectric properties in an antiferromagnetic material Pb(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$, whose structure is characterized by a staggered array of Cu$_4$O$_{12}$ magnetic units with convex geometry known as square cupola. Our experiments show a $B$-induced phase transition from a previously reported low-$B$ linear magnetoelectric phase to a new high-$B$ magnetoelectric phase, which accompanies a 90$^\circ$ flop of electric polarization and gigantic magnetodielectric effect. Moreover, we observe a $B$-induced sign reversal of ferroelectric polarization in the high-$B$ phase. Our model and first-principles calculations reveal that the observed complex magnetoelectric behavior is well explained in terms of a $B$-dependent electric polarization generated in each Cu$_4$O$_{12}$ unit by the so-called exchange striction mechanism. The present study demonstrates that the materials design based on the magnetic structural unit with convex geometry deserves to be explored for develo** strong magnetoelectric couplings.

The metamagnetic transition between the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic state in UIrGe has been studied at various temperatures by magnetization, heat capacity and magnetocaloric-effect measurements on a single crystal in static and pulsed magnetic fields applied along the orthorhombic b-axis. A first-order transition is observed at temperatures below 13 K and a second-order one at higher temperatures up to the Néel temperature (TN = 16.5 K). The first-order transition is accompanied by a dramatic increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient. Magnetization measurements extended to the paramagnetic range revealed an anomalous S-shape (inflection point at a magnetic field Hm) in magnetization isotherms at temperatures above 13 K and a temperature dependence of susceptibility with a maximum at Tmax well above TN. The lines representing the temperature-induced evolution of Hm and field-induced evolution of Tmax, respectively, are bound for the point in the magnetic phase diagram at which the order of metamagnetic transition changes. A tentative scenario explaining these anomalies by antiferromagnetic correlations or short-range order in the paramagnetic state is discussed.

We have successfully synthesized the novel antiferromagnets with Ir$^{4+}$ honeycomb lattice ZnIrO$_3$ and MgIrO$_3$ and investigated their magnetic and thermodynamic properties. The two iridates are isomorphic but exhibit qualitatively different magnetic properties. ZnIrO$_3$ shows antiferromagnetic ordering below 46.6 K, whereas MgIrO$_3$ displays weak ferromagnetic behavior below 31.8 K owing to formation of a canted antiferromagnetic ordering. The measurement of magnetic susceptibility with using an oriented powder sample revealed the presence of an XY-like magnetic anisotropy and a tilting magnetic structure which is possibly stabilized by the Kitaev interaction. Moreover, magnetization curves of MgIrO3 and ZnIrO3 up to 60 T show different behaviors, demonstrating that each magnetic ground state is different with each other. We discuss the difference in the ground state between MgIrO$_3$ and ZnIrO$_3$ from the viewpoint a magnetic model consisting of the Kitaev and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions with the spin frustration effect on the honeycomb lattice.

We report on magnetization, sound velocity, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements of the Ising-like spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain system BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ as a function of temperature down to 1.3 K and applied transverse magnetic field up to 60 T. While across the Néel temperature of $T_N\sim5$ K anomalies in magnetization and sound velocity confirm the antiferromagnetic ordering transition, at the lowest temperature the field-dependent measurements reveal a sharp softening of sound velocity $v(B)$ and a clear minimum of temperature $T(B)$ at $B^{c,3D}_\perp=21.4$ T, indicating the suppression of the antiferromagnetic order. At higher fields, the $T(B)$ curve shows a broad minimum at $B^c_\perp = 40$ T, accompanied by a broad minimum in the sound velocity and a saturation-like magnetization. These features signal a quantum phase transition which is further characterized by the divergent behavior of the Grüneisen parameter $Γ_B \propto (B-B^{c}_\perp)^{-1}$. By contrast, around the critical field, the Grüneisen parameter converges as temperature decreases, pointing to a quantum critical point of the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model.

Here, we report on the magnetism in powder CsO2 and high-magnetic field magnetization measurements in pulsed-magnetic fields of up to 60 T. We obtained the low temperature phase diagram around the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN = 9.6 K under the magnetic field. At 1.3 K, remarkable up-turn curvature in the magnetization around a saturation field of ~ 60 T is found, which corresponds to the spin-1/2. We will compare it with the theoretical calculation.

Topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) exhibit bulk Dirac cones protected by time reversal and crystal symmetry, as well as surface states originating from non-trivial topology. While there is a manifold possible onset of superconducting order in such systems, few observations of intrinsic superconductivity have so far been reported for TDSs. We observe evidence for a TDS phase in FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ ($x$ = 0.45), one of the high transition temperature ($T_c$) iron-based superconductors. In angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and transport experiments, we find spin-polarized states overlap** with the bulk states on the (001) surface, and linear magnetoresistance (MR) starting from 6 T. Combined, this strongly suggests the existence of a TDS phase, which is confirmed by theoretical calculations. In total, the topological electronic states in Fe(Te,Se) provide a promising high $T_c$ platform to realize multiple topological superconducting phases.

On the basis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and magnetization data obtained using polycrystalline samples, these three sulfides are suggested to be breathing pyrochlore magnets with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions on the small and large tetrahedra, respectively. The measured magnetization processes of the three sulfides up to 72 T are significantly different. The magnetization curves of LiInCr4S8 and CuInCr4S8 have large hysteresis loops with different shapes, while there is no hysteresis in that of LiGaCr4S8. Geometrical frustration of the small tetrahedron is likely to give rise to a wide variety of ground states, indicating the rich physics in these antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic breathing pyrochlore magnets.

Strongly correlated iridate pyrochlores with geometrically frustrated spins have been recognized as a potentially interesting group of oxide materials where novel topological phases may appear. A particularly attractive system is the metallic Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, as it is known as a Fermi node semimetal characterized by quadratic band touching at the Brillouin zone center, suggesting that the topology of its electronic states can be tuned by moderate lattice strain. In this work we report the growth of epitaxial Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ thin films grown by solid-state epitaxy. We show that the strained parts of the films give rise to a spontaneous Hall effect that persists up to 50 K without having spontaneous magnetization within our experimental accuracy. This indicates that a macroscopic time reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking appears at a temperature scale that is too high for the magnetism to be due to Pr 4$f$ moments, and must thus be related to magnetic order of the iridium 5$d$ electrons. The magnetotransport and Hall analysis results are consistent with the formation of a Weyl semimetal state that is induced by a combination of TRS breaking and cubic symmetry breaking due to lattice strain.

The Kondo-lattice compound CeRhIn$_5$ displays a field-induced Fermi surface reconstruction at $B^*\approx30$ T, which occurs within the antiferromagnetic state, prior to the quantum critical point at $B_{c0}\approx50$ T. Here, in order to investigate the nature of the Fermi surface change, we measured the magnetostriction, specific heat, and magnetic torque of CeRhIn$_5$ across a wide range of magnetic fields. Our observations uncover the field-induced itineracy of the $4f$ electrons, where above $B_{\rm onset}\approx17$ T there is a significant enhancement of the Sommerfeld coefficient, and spin-dependent effective cyclotron masses determined from quantum oscillations. Upon crossing $B_{\rm onset}$, the temperature dependence of the specific heat also shows distinctly different behavior from that at low fields. Our results indicate that the Kondo coupling is remarkably robust upon increasing the magnetic field. This is ascribed to the delocalization of the $4f$ electrons at the Fermi surface reconstruction at $B^*$.

Rigorous theoretical studies provide an insight into the magnetic state of K$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4$)$_3$: an EST cluster makes a triplet in the ground state and one-dimensional chain of the EST induces a cluster-based Haldane state. We predict that the cluster-based Haldene state emerges whenever the number of tetrahedra in the EST is $even$.

We demonstrate a close connection between observed field-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and quantum critical fluctuation (QCF) in the Zn7%-doped heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5. Magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity at low temperatures all show the presence of new field-induced AFM order under the magnetic field B of 5-10 T, whose order parameter is clearly distinguished from the low-field AFM phase observed for B < 5 T and the superconducting phase for B < 3 T. The 4f electronic specific heat divided by the temperature, C_e/T, exhibits -lnT dependence at B~10 T (= B_0), and furthermore, the C_e/T data for B >= B_0 are well scaled by the logarithmic function of B and T: ln[(B-B_0)/T^{2.7}]. These features are quite similar to the scaling behavior found in pure CeCoIn5, strongly suggesting that the field-induced QCF in pure CeCoIn5 originates from the hidden AFM order parameter equivalent to high-field AFM order in Zn7%-doped CeCoIn5.

A half magnetization plateau is observed above 90 T to 130 T, suggesting that LiInCr4O8 has a strong spin-lattice coupling, similar to conventional chromium spinel oxides. The magnetization of LiGa0.125In0.875Cr4O8, in which the structural and magnetic transitions at low temperatures have been completely suppressed, shows a sudden increase above 13 T, indicating that a spin gap of 2.2 meV exists between a tetramer singlet ground state and an excited state with total spin 1, with the latter being stabilized by the application of a magnetic field. The breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnet is found to be a unique frustrated system with strong spin-lattice coupling and bond alternation.

We consider that the probable spin model for CrVMoO$_7$ is an interacting antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ dimer model. We evaluated the intradimer interaction $J$ to be $25 \pm 1$ K and the effective interdimer interaction $J_{\rm eff}$ to be $8.8 \pm 1$ K. CrVMoO$_7$ is a rare spin dimer compound that shows an antiferromagnetically ordered state at atmospheric pressure and zero magnetic field. The magnitude of ordered moments is $0.73(2) μ_{\rm B}$. It is much smaller than a classical value $\sim 3 μ_{\rm B}$. Longitudinal-mode magnetic excitations may be observable in single crystalline CrVMoO$_7$.

The magnetic-field-temperature phase diagram of solid oxygen is investigated by the adiabatic magnetocaloric effect (MCE) measurement with pulsed magnetic fields. Relatively large temperature decrease with hysteresis is observed at just below the $β$-$γ$ and $α$-$β$ phase transition temperatures owing to the field-induced transitions. The magnetic field dependences of these phase boundaries are obtained as $T_\mathrm{βγ}(H)=43.8-1.55\times10^{-3}H^2$ K and $T_\mathrm{αβ}(H)=23.9-0.73\times10^{-3}H^2$ K. The magnetic Clausius-Clapeyron equation quantitatively explains the $H$ dependence of $T_\mathrm{βγ}$, meanwhile, does not $T_\mathrm{αβ}$. The MCE curve at $T_\mathrm{βγ}$ is of typical first-order, while the curve at $T_\mathrm{αβ}$ seems to have both characteristics of first- and second-order transitions. We discuss the order of the $α$-$β$ phase transition and propose possible reasons for the unusual behavior.

Low-temperature ($T$) thermodynamic properties in magnetic fields ($B$) of the quasi-Kagome antiferromagnet CePdAl ($T_{\rm N}\sim$ 2.7 K) were studied by means of magnetization and specific-heat $C(T,B)$ measurements. The unusual magnetic phase diagram, including three thermodynamic phases I-III, and crossover anomalies, has been obtained. In low-field phase I, the existence of the partial Kondo screening state on the one-third Ce sites is supported from the thermodynamic point of view: (i) an appearance of the paramagnetic moment with one-third of the full moment around 3 T, and (ii) an occurrence of the entropy release $\sim$0.3$R$ln2 around the observed crossover. On the other hand, a strong enhancement of $C/T$ is found around the point, where $T_{\rm N}(B)$ meets the boundary of phase III, indicating the possible presence of a tri-critical point. Furthermore, it is suggested that the three metamagnetic transitions at $B_{{\rm m}i}$ ($i=$1,2,3) come from successive increments of the Ising-type magnetic moment along the $c$-axis. In high-field state above 20 T, the behavior of $f$ electron can be rather described by the crystal-electric-field model.

Magnetoelectric properties are studied by a combined experimental and theoretical study of a quasi-two-dimensional material composed of square cupolas, Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. The magnetization is measured up to above the saturation field, and several anomalies are observed depending on the field directions. We propose a $S$=1/2 spin model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which well reproduces the full magnetization curves. Elaborating the phase diagram of the model, we show that the anomalies are explained by magnetoelectric phase transitions. Our theory also accounts for the scaling of the dielectric anomaly observed in experiments. The results elucidate the crucial role of the in-plane component of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which is induced by the noncoplanar buckling of square cupola. We also predict a `hidden' phase and another magnetoelectric response both of which appear in nonzero magnetic field.

These two subsystems were found to be approximately decoupled. Ba$_2$CoTeO$_6$ undergoes magnetic phase transitions at $T_{\rm N1}\,{=}\,12.0$ K and $T_{\rm N2}\,{=}\,3.0$ K, which can be interpreted as the orderings of subsystems B and A, respectively. Subsystem A exhibits a magnetization plateau at one-third of the saturation magnetization for the magnetic field $H$ perpendicular to the $c$ axis owing to the quantum order-by-disorder, whereas for $H\,{\parallel}\,c$, subsystem B shows three-step metamagnetic transitions with magnetization plateaus at zero, one-third and one-half of the saturation magnetization. The analysis of the magnetization process for subsystem B shows that the classical ground states at these plateaus are infinitely degenerate within the Ising model.

Magnetization measurements of LaCoO$_{3}$ have been carried out up to 133 T generated with a destructive pulse magnet at a wide temperature range from 2 to 120 K. A novel magnetic transition was found at $B>100$ T and $T>T^{*}=32\pm 5$ K which is characterized by its transition field increasing with increasing temperature. At $T<T^{*}$, the previously reported transition at $B\sim65$ T was observed. Based on the obtained $B$-$T$ phase diagram and the Clausius-Clapeyron relation, the entropy of the high-field phase at 80 K is found to be smaller for about $1.5$ J K$^{-1}$ mol$^{-1}$ than that of the low-field phase. We suggest that the observed two high-field phases may originate in different spatial orders of the spin states and possibly other degrees of freedom such as orbitals. An inherent strong correlation of spin states among cobalt sites should have triggered the emergence of the ordered phases in LaCoO$_{3}$ at high magnetic fields.

We report on the anisotropic properties of Pauli-limited superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AFM) in the solid solutions CeCo(In_{1-x}Zn_x)_5 (x<=0.07). In CeCo(In_{1-x}Zn_x)_5, the SC transition temperature T_c is continuously reduced from 2.3 K (x=0) to ~1.4 K (x=0.07) by do** Zn, and then the AFM order with the transition temperature of T_N~2.2 K develops for x larger than ~0.05. The present thermal, transport and magnetic measurements under magnetic field B reveal that the substitution of Zn for In yields little change of low-temperature upper critical field μ_0H_{c2} for both the tetragonal a and c axes, while it monotonically reduces the SC transition temperature T_c. In particular, the magnitudes of μ_0H_{c2} at the nominal Zn concentration of x = 0.05 (measured Zn amount of ~0.019) are 11.8 T for B||a and 4.8 T for B||c, which are as large as those of pure compound though T_c is reduced to 80% of that for x=0. We consider that this feature originates from a combination of both an enhanced AFM correlation and a reduced SC condensation energy in these alloys. It is also clarified that the AFM order differently responds to the magnetic field, depending on the field directions. For B||c, the clear anomaly due to the AFM transition is observed up to the AFM critical field of ~5 T in the thermodynamic quantities, whereas it is rapidly damped with increasing B for B||a. We discuss this anisotropic response on the basis of a rich variety of the AFM modulations involved in the Ce115 compounds.

The magnetic susceptibility chi(T) of Ba2CuTeO6 is well described by that expected for isolated spin ladders with exchange coupling of J~86 K but shows a deviation from the expected thermally activated behavior at low temperatures below T*~25 K. An anomaly in chi(T), indicative of magnetic ordering, is observed at T_mag=16 K. No clear signature of long-range ordering, however, is captured in NMR, specific heat or neutron diffraction measurements at and below T_mag. The marginal magnetic transition, indicative of strong quantum fluctuations, is evidence that Ba2CuTeO6 is in very close proximity to a quantum critical point between a magnetically ordered phase and a gapped spin liquid controlled by inter-ladder couplings.

We have synthesized high-quality single crystals of volborthite, a seemingly distorted kagome antiferromagnet, and carried out high-field magnetization measurements up to 74 T and 51V NMR measurements up to 30 T. An extremely wide 1/3 magnetization plateau appears above 28 T and continues over 74 T at 1.4 K, which has not been observed in previous study using polycrystalline samples. NMR spectra reveal an incommensurate order (most likely a spin-density wave order) below 22 T and a simple spin structure in the plateau phase. Moreover, a novel intermediate phase is found between 23 and 26 T, where the magnetization varies linearly with magnetic field and the NMR spectra indicate an inhomogeneous distribution of the internal magnetic field. This sequence of phases in volborthite bear a striking similarity to those of frustrated spin chains with a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor coupling J1 competing with an antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling J2.

The in-plane resistivity, Hall resistivity and magnetization of graphite were investigated in pulsed magnetic fields applied along the \textit{c}-axis. The Hall resistivity approaches zero at around 53 T where the in-plane and out-of-plane resistivities steeply decrease. The differential magnetization also shows an anomaly at around this field with a similar amplitude compared to that of de Haas-van Alphen oscillations at lower fields. This transition field appears insensitive to disorder, but reduces with do** holes. These results suggest the realization of the quantum limit states above 53 T. As a plausible explanation for the observed gapped out-of-plane conduction above 53 T, the emergence of the excitonic BCS-like state in graphite is proposed.

The layered compound $α$-RuCl$_3$ is composed of a honeycomb lattice of magnetic Ru$^{3+}$ ions with the $4d^5$ electronic state. We have investigated the magnetic properties of $α$-RuCl$_3$ via magnetization and specific heat measurements using single crystals. It was observed that $α$-RuCl$_3$ undergoes a structural phase transition at $T_{t}\,{\simeq}\,150$ K accompanied by fairly large hysteresis. This structural phase transition is expected to be similar to that observed in closely related CrCl$_3$. The magnetizations and magnetic susceptibilities are strongly anisotropic, which mainly arise from the anisotropic $g$-factors, i.e., $g_{ab}\,{\simeq}\,2.5$ and $g_c\,{\simeq}\,0.4$ for magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the $ab$ plane, respectively. These $g$-factors and the obtained entropy indicate that the effective spin of Ru$^{3+}$ is one-half, which results from the low-spin state. Specific heat data show that magnetic ordering occurs in four steps at zero magnetic field. The successive magnetic phase transitions should be ascribed to the competition among exchange interactions. The magnetic phase diagram for $H\,{\parallel}\,ab$ is obtained. We discuss the strongly anisotropic $g$-factors in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and deduce that the exchange interaction is strongly XY-like. $α$-RuCl$_3$ is magnetically described as a three-dimensionally coupled XY-like frustrated magnet on a honeycomb lattice.
