The properties of satellite galaxies are closely related to their host galaxies in galaxy groups. In cluster environments, on the other hand, the interaction between close neighbors is known to be limited. Our goal is to examine the relationships between host and satellite galaxies in the harsh environment of a galaxy cluster. To achieve this goal, we study a galaxy cluster WHL J085910.0+294957 at z = 0.30 using deep images obtained with CQUEAN CCD camera mounted on the 2.1-m Otto Struve telescope. After member selection based on the scaling relations of photometric and structural parameters, we investigate the relationship between bright (M_i < -18) galaxies and their faint (-18 < M_i < -15) companions. The weighted mean color of faint companion galaxies shows no significant dependence (< 1 sigma to Bootstrap uncertainties) on cluster-centric distance and local luminosity density as well as the luminosity and concentration of an adjacent bright galaxy. However, the weighted mean color shows marginal dependence (~ 2.2 sigma) on the color of an adjacent bright galaxy, when the sample is limited to bright galaxies with at least 2 faint companions. By using a permutation test, we confirm that the correlation in color between bright galaxies and their faint companions in this cluster is statistically significant with a confidence level of 98.7%. The statistical significance increases if we additionally remove non-members using the SDSS photometric redshift information (~ 2.6 sigma and 99.3%). Our results suggest three possible scenarios: (1) vestiges of infallen groups, (2) dwarf capturing, and (3) tidal tearing of bright galaxies.

With a total data exposure of 24,324.3kg$\cdot$days,we search for WIMP interaction signals produced by nuclei recoiling from WIMP-nuclear elastic scattering with visible energies between 2 and 4keV. The observed energy distribution of candidate events is consistent with null signals, and upper limits of the WIMP-proton spin-independent interaction are set with a 90% confidence level. The observed limit rejects most of the low mass region of parameter space favored by the DAMA annual modulation signal.

Analytical solutions of the Coulomb impurity problem of graphene in the absence of a magnetic field show that when the dimensionless strength of the Coulomb potential $g$ reaches a critical value the solutions become supercritical with imaginary eigenenergies. Application of a magnetic field is a singular perturbation, and no analytical solutions are known except at a denumerably infinite set of magnetic fields. We find solutions of this problem by numerical diagonalization of large Hamiltonian matrices. Solutions are qualitatively different from those of zero magnetic field. All energies are discrete and no complex energies allowed. We have computed the finite-size scaling function of the probability density containing s-wave component of Dirac wavefunctions. This function depends on the coupling constant, regularization parameter, and the gap. In the limit of vanishing regularization parameter our findings are consistent with the expected values exponent $ν$ which determines of the asymptotic behavior of the wavefunction near $r=0$.

Using deep archival images from the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we have identified a sample of RR Lyrae candidates in both dTrans galaxies [219 RRab (RR0) and 13 RRc (RR1) variables in ESO294-G010; 225 RRab and 44 RRc stars in ESO410-G005]. The metallicities of the individual RRab stars are calculated via the period-amplitude-[Fe/H] relation derived by Alcock et al. This yields mean metallicities of <[Fe/H]>_{ESO294} = -1.77 +/- 0.03 and <[Fe/H]>_{ESO410} = -1.64 +/- 0.03. The RRL metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) are investigated further via simple chemical evolution models; these reveal the relics of the early chemical enrichment processes for these two dTrans galaxies. In the case of both galaxies, the shapes of the RRL MDFs are well-described by pre-enrichment models. This suggests two possible channels for the early chemical evolution for these Sculptor group dTrans galaxies: 1) The ancient stellar populations of our target dwarf galaxies might have formed from the star forming gas which was already enriched through "prompt initial enrichment" or an "initial nucleosynthetic spike" from the very first massive stars, or 2) this pre-enrichment state might have been achieved by the end products from more evolved systems of their nearest neighbor, NGC 55.

Their radial velocities derived from the spectra range from $-61.2 \pm 20.4$ km s$^{-1}$ (for C1) to $-115.34 \pm 57.9$ km s$^{-1}$ (for C4) and, unlike the intermediate age carbon stars, they do not display any sign of systematic rotation around NGC 6822. The ages and metallicities derived using the Lick indices show that the ESCs are old ($\geq 8$ Gyr) and metal poor ([Fe/H]$\lesssim -1.5$). NGC 6822 is found to have both metal poor ([Fe/H]$\approx -2.0$) and metal rich ([Fe/H]$\approx -0.9$) star clusters within 15 arcmin (2 kpc) from the center, while only metal poor clusters are observed in the outer halo with $r \geq 20$ arcmin (2.6 kpc). The kinematics, old ages, and low metallicities of ESCs suggest that ESCs may have accreted into the halo of NGC 6822. Based on the velocity distribution of ESCs, we have determined the total mass and the mass-to-light ratio of NGC 6822: $M_{N6822} = 7.5^{+4.5}_{-0.1} \times 10^{9} M_{\odot}$ and $(M/L)_{N6822} = 75^{+45}_{-1} (M/L)_{\odot}$. It shows that NGC 6822 is one of the most dark matter dominated dwarf galaxies in the Local Group.

To investigate the validity of the assumption that quiescent galaxies and active galaxies follow the same black hole mass - stellar velocity dispersion relation, as required for the calibration of M_BH estimators for broad line AGNs, we determine and compare the M-sigma relations, respectively, for quiescent and active galaxies. For the quiescent galaxy sample, composed of 72 dynamical M_BH measurements, we update sigma for 28 galaxies using homogeneous H-band measurements that are corrected for galaxy rotation. For active galaxies, we collect 25 reverberation-mapped AGNs and improve sigma measurement for two objects . Combining the two samples, we determine the virial factor $f$, first by scaling the active galaxy sample to the M-sigma relation of quiescent galaxies, and second by simultaneously fitting the quiescent and active galaxy samples, as f=5.1_{-1.1}^{+1.5} and f=5.9_{-1.5}^{+2.1}, respectively. The M-sigma relation of active galaxies appears to be shallower than that of quiescent galaxies. However, the discrepancy is caused by a difference in the accessible M_BH distribution at given sigma, primarily due to the difficulty of measuring reliable stellar velocity dispersion for the host galaxies of luminous AGNs. Accounting for the selection effects, we find that active and quiescent galaxies are consistent with following intrinsically the same M-sigma relation.

To calibrate stellar velocity dispersion measurements from optical and near-IR stellar lines, and to improve the black hole mass (MBH)- stellar velocity dispersion (sigma) relation, we measure stellar velocity dispersions based on high quality H-band spectra for a sample of 31 nearby galaxies, for which dynamical MBH is available in the literature. By comparing velocity dispersions measured from stellar lines in the H-band with those measured from optical stellar lines, we find no significant difference, suggesting that optical and near-IR stellar lines represent the same kinematics and that dust effect is negligible for early-type galaxies. Based on the spatially-resolved rotation and velocity dispersion measurements along the major axis of each galaxy, we find that a rotating stellar disk is present for 80% of galaxies in the sample. For galaxies with a rotation component, velocity dispersions measured from a single aperture spectrum can vary by up to ~20%, depending on the size of the adopted extraction aperture. To correct for the rotational broadening, we derive luminosity-weighted velocity dispersion within the effective radius of each galaxy, providing uniformly measured velocity dispersions to improve the MBH-sigma relation.

We present wide-field multiband photometry of globular cluster (GC) systems in NGC 1399, NGC 1404, and NGC 1387 located at the central region of the Fornax galaxy cluster. Observation was carried out through U, B, V, and I bands, which marks one of the widest and deepest U-band studies on extragalactic GC systems. The present U-band photometry enables us to significantly reduce the contamination by a factor of two for faint sources (Vo~23.5). The main results based on some 2000 GC candidates around NGC 1399, NGC 1404, and NGC 1387 are as follows: (1) the GC system in each galaxy exhibits bimodal color distributions in all colors examined, but the shape of color histograms varies systematically depending on colors; (2) NGC 1399 shows that the mean colors of both blue and red GCs become bluer with increasing galactocentric radius; (3) NGC 1399 shows overabundance of GCs in the directions of NGC 1404 and NGC 1387, indicating their ongoing interactions; and (4) NGC 1399 also exhibits a ~0.5' offset between the center of the inner GC distribution and the galaxy's optical center, suggesting that NGC 1399 is not yet dynamically relaxed and may be undergoing merger events.

By utilizing the flux ratio of UV emission lines (i.e., NV /CIV, (SiIV+OIV])/CIV, and NV/HeII) as metallicity indicators, we compare broad-line region (BLR) gas metallicity with AGN properties, i.e., black hole mass, luminosity, and Eddington ratio. We find that BLR metallicity correlates with Eddington ratio while the dependency on black hole mass is much weaker. Although these trends of low-z AGNs appear to be different from those of high-z QSOs, the difference between low-z and high-z samples is partly caused by the limited dynamical range of the samples. We find that metal enrichment at the center of galaxies is closely connected to the accretion activity of black holes and that the scatter of metallicity correlations with black hole mass increases over cosmic time.

The sizes of galaxies are known to be closely related with their masses, luminosities, redshifts and morphologies. However, when we fix these quantities and morphology, we still find large dispersions in the galaxy size distribution. We investigate the origin of these dispersions for red early-type galaxies, using two SDSS-based catalogs. We find that the sizes of faint galaxies (log(M_dyn/M_sun) < 10.3 or M_r > -19.5, where M_r is the r-band absolute magnitude, k-corrected to z = 0.1) are affected more significantly by luminosity, while the sizes of bright galaxies (log(M_dyn/M_sun) > 11.4 or M_r < -21.4) are by dynamical mass. At fixed mass and luminosity, the sizes of low-mass galaxies (log(M_dyn/M_sun) ~ 10.45 and M_r ~ -19.8) are relatively less sensitive to their colors, color gradients and axis ratios. On the other hand, the sizes of intermediate-mass (log(M_dyn/M_sun) ~ 10.85 and M_r ~ -20.4) and high-mass (log(M_dyn/M_sun) ~ 11.25 and M_r ~ -21.0) galaxies significantly depend on those parameters, in the sense that larger red early-type galaxies have bluer colors, more negative color gradients (bluer outskirts) and smaller axis ratios. These results indicate that the sizes of intermediate- and high-mass red early-type galaxies are significantly affected by their recent minor mergers or rotations, whereas the sizes of low-mass red early-type galaxies are affected by some other mechanisms. Major dry mergers also seem to have influenced on the size growth of high-mass red early-type galaxies.

We present a comprehensive photometric study of the old open cluster, NGC 6819 using 1x1 degree field VI MOSAIC CCD imaging taken with the WIYN 0.9m telescope. The resultant color-magnitude diagram (CMD) shows a well developed main sequence (MS) extending from V~14.5 mag down to our photometric limit of V~21 mag. Fitting theoretical isochrones with adopted values of the reddening and metallicity (E(B-V)=0.14, [Fe/H]=+0.09 dex) to the observed CMD yields a distance modulus of (m-M)_{0}=11.93+/-0.10 and an age of ~2.6 Gyr for NGC 6819. Our wide-field imaging reveals that NGC 6819 is larger in areal extent (R=13') than previously thought. The wide-field also benefits our estimate of the degree of field star contamination, and ultimately yields improved measurements of the structural parameters (r_c=2.80', r_t=38.2', and r_h=7') and tidal mass of the cluster (M_{tid}=3542.4 M(sun)). The flattened luminosity and mass functions indicate that NGC 6819 has experienced mass segregation as a result of its dynamical evolution. Our variability study of the cluster blue straggler star (BSS) population using the Welch-Stetson variability index (I_{WS}) has revealed a number of variable BSS candidates.

We report on several new basic properties of a parabolic dot in the presence of a magnetic field. The ratio between the potential strength and the Landau level (LL) energy spacing serves as the coupling constant of this problem. In the weak coupling limit the energy spectrum in each Hilbert subspace of an angular momentum consists of discrete LLs of graphene. In the intermediate coupling regime non-resonant states form a closely spaced energy spectrum. We find, counter-intuitively, that resonant quasi-boundstates of both positive and negative energies exist in the spectrum. The presence of resonant quasi-boundstates of negative energies are a unique property of massless Dirac fermions. As the strong coupling limit is approached resonant and non-resonant states transform into anomalous states, whose probability densities develop a narrow peak inside the well and another broad peak under the potential barrier. These properties may investigated experimentally by measuring optical transition energies that can be described by a scaling function of the coupling constant.

We present a spectroscopic analysis of the metallicities, ages, and alpha-elements of the globular clusters (GCs) in the giant elliptical galaxy (gE) NGC 4636 in the Virgo cluster. Line indices of the GCs are measured from the integrated spectra obtained with Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) on the Subaru 8.2 m telescope. We derive [Fe/H] values of 59 GCs based on the Brodie & Huchra method, and [Z/H], age, and [a/Fe] values of 33 GCs from the comparison of the Lick line indices with single stellar population models. The metallicity distribution of NGC 4636 GCs shows a hint of a bimodality with two peaks at [Fe/H]=-1.23 (sigma=0.32) and -0.35 (sigma=0.19). The age spread is large from 2 Gyr to 15 Gyr and the fraction of young GCs with age < 5 Gyr is about 27%. The [a/Fe] of the GCs shows a broad distribution with a mean value [a/Fe]~0.14 dex. The dependence of these chemical properties on the galactocentric radius is weak. We also derive the metallicities, ages, and [a/Fe] values for the GCs in other nearby gEs (M87, M49, M60, NGC 5128, NGC 1399, and NGC 1407) from the line index data in the literature using the same methods as used for NGC 4636 GCs. The metallicity distribution of GCs in the combined sample of seven gEs including NGC 4636 is found to be bimodal, supported by the KMM test with a significance level of >99.9%. All these gEs harbor some young GCs with ages less than 5 Gyr. The mean age of the metal-rich GCs ([Fe/H] > -0.9) is about 3 Gyr younger than that of the metal-poor GCs. The mean value of [a/Fe] of the gE GCs is smaller than that of the Milky Way GCs. We discuss these results in the context of GC formation in gEs.

We investigate the relationship between the emission-line properties, the black hole accretion rate, and the radio properties using a sample of 34 low-redshift (z < 0.4) YRGs. We classify YRGs as high-excitation galaxies (HEGs) and low-excitation galaxies (LEGs) based on the flux ratio of high-ionization to low-ionization emission lines. Using the Hα luminosities as a proxy of accretion rate, we find that HEGs in YRGs have \sim1 dex higher Eddington ratios than LEGs in YRGs, suggesting that HEGs have higher mass accretion rate or higher radiative efficiency than LEGs. In agreement with previous studies, we find that the luminosities of emission lines, in particular Hα, are correlated with radio core luminosity, suggesting that accretion and young radio activities are fundamentally connected.

WIFIS offers an unprecedented combination of etendue and spectral resolving power for seeing-limited, integral field observations in the 0.9-1.8 um range and is most sensitive in the 0.9-1.35 um range. Its optical design consists of front-end re-imaging optics, an all-reflective image slicer-type, integral field unit (IFU) called FISICA, and a long-slit grating spectrograph back-end that is coupled with a HAWAII 2RG focal plane array. The full wavelength range is achieved by selecting between two different gratings. By virtue of its re-imaging optics, the spectrograph is quite versatile and can be used at multiple telescopes. The size of its field-of-view is unrivalled by other similar spectrographs, offering a 4.5" x 12" integral field at a 10-meter class telescope (or 20" x 50" at a 2.3-meter telescope). The use of WIFIS will be crucial in astronomical problems which require wide-field, two-dimensional spectroscopy such as the study of merging galaxies at moderate redshift and nearby star/planet-forming regions and supernova remnants. We discuss the final optical design of WIFIS, and its predicted on-sky performance on two reference telescope platforms: the 2.3-m Steward Bok telescope and the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias. We also present the results from our laboratory characterization of FISICA. IFU properties such as magnification, field-map**, and slit width along the entire slit length were measured by our tests. The construction and testing of WIFIS is expected to be completed by early 2013. We plan to commission the instrument at the 2.3-m Steward Bok telescope at Kitt Peak, USA in Spring 2013.

We present an analysis of the papers published in the journals Nature and Science in the years from 2006 to 2010. During this period, a total of 7788 papers were published in the two journals. This includes 544 astronomy papers that comprise 7.0% of the papers in `all' research fields and 18.9% of those in the fields of `physical sciences'. The sub-fields of research of the astronomy papers are distributed, in descending order of number of papers, in Solar System, stellar astronomy, galaxies and the universe, the Milky Way Galaxy, and exoplanets. The observational facilities used for the studies are mainly ground-based telescopes (31.1%), spacecrafts (27.0%), and space telescopes (22.8%), while 16.0% of papers did not use any noticeable facilities and 1.7% used other facilities. Korean scientists have published 86 papers (33 in Nature and 53 in Science), which is 1.10% of all the papers (N=7788) in the two journals. The share of papers by Korean astronomers among the scientific papers by Koreans is 8.14%, slightly higher than the contribution of astronomy papers (7.0%) in both journals.

We report the properties of the interacting S0 galaxy NGC 5195 (M51B), revealed in a pixel analysis using the HST/ACS images in the F435W, F555W and F814W (BVI) bands. We analyze the pixel color-magnitude diagram (pCMD) of NGC 5195, focusing on the properties of its red and blue pixel sequences and the difference from the pCMD of NGC 5194 (M51A; the spiral galaxy interacting with NGC 5195). The red pixel sequence of NGC 5195 is redder than that of NGC 5194, which corresponds to the difference in the dust optical depth of 2<Δτ_V<4 at fixed age and metallicity. The blue pixel sequence of NGC 5195 is very weak and spatially corresponds to the tidal bridge between the two interacting galaxies. This implies that the blue pixel sequence is not an ordinary feature in the pCMD of an early-type galaxy, but that it is a transient feature of star formation caused by the galaxy-galaxy interaction. We also find a difference in the shapes of the red pixel sequences on the pixel color-color diagrams (pCCDs) of NGC 5194 and NGC 5195. We investigate the spatial distributions of the pCCD-based pixel stellar populations. The young population fraction in the tidal bridge area is larger than that in other areas by a factor > 15. Along the tidal bridge, young populations seem to be clumped particularly at the middle point of the bridge. On the other hand, the dusty population shows a relatively wide distribution between the tidal bridge and the NGC 5195 center.

New limits are presented on the cross section for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) nucleon scattering in the KIMS CsI(T) detector array at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory. The exposure used for these results is 24524.3 kg\cdotdays. Nuclei recoiling from WIMP interactions are identified by a pulse shape discrimination method. A low energy background due to alpha emitters on the crystal surfaces is identified and taken into account in the analysis. The detected numbers of nuclear recoils are consistent with zero and 90% confidence level upper limits on the WIMP interaction rates are set for electron equivalent energies from 3 keV to 11 keV. The 90% upper limit of NR event rate for 3.6-5.8 keV corresponding to 2-4 keV in NaI(T) is 0.0098 counts/kg/keV/day which is below the annual modulation amplitude reported by DAMA. This is incompatible with interpretations that enhance the modulation amplitude such as inelastic dark matter models. We establish the most stringent cross section limits on spin-dependent WIMP-proton elastic scattering for the WIMP masses greater than 20 GeV/c2.

We have investigated, using effective mass approach (EMA), magnetic properties of a one-dimensional electron gas in graphene armchair ribbons when the electrons of occupy only the lowest conduction subband. We find that magnetic properties of the one-dimensional electron gas may depend sensitively on the width of the ribbon. For ribbon widths $L_x=3Ma_0$, a critical point separates ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states while for $L_x=(3M+1)a_0$ paramagnetic state is stable ($M$ is an integer and $a_{0}$ is the length of the unit cell). These width-dependent properties are a consequence of eigenstates that have a subtle width-dependent mixture of $\mathbf{K}$ and $\mathbf{K'}$ states, and can be understood by examining the wavefunction overlap that appears in the expression for the many-body exchange self-energy. Ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states may be used for spintronic purposes.

We present the ultraviolet (UV) color-color relation of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the nearby universe (0.05 < z < 0.12) to investigate the properties of hot stellar populations responsible for the UV excess (UVX). The initial sample of ETGs is selected by the spectroscopic redshift and the morphology parameter from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7, and then cross-matched with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Far-UV (FUV) and Near-UV (NUV) GR6 data. The cross-matched ETG sample is further classified by their emission line characteristics in the optical spectra into quiescent, star-forming, and AGN categories. Contaminations from early-type spiral galaxies, mergers, and morphologically disturbed galaxies are removed by visual inspection. By drawing the FUV - NUV (as a measure of UV spectral shape) vs. FUV - r (as a measure of UVX strength) diagram for the final sample of ~3700 quiescent ETGs, we find that the "old and dead" ETGs consist of a well-defined sequence in UV colors, the "UV red sequence", so that the stronger UVX galaxies should have a harder UV spectral shape systematically. However, the observed UV spectral slope is too steep to be reproduced by the canonical stellar population models in which the UV flux is mainly controlled by age or metallicity parameters. Moreover, 2 mag of color spreads both in FUV - NUV and FUV - r appear to be ubiquitous among any subsets in distance or luminosity. This implies that the UVX in ETGs could be driven by yet another parameter which might be even more influential than age or metallicity.

We present a photometric estimation of the distance and reddening values to the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1156, which is one of the best targets to study the isolated dwarf galaxies in the nearby universe. We have used the imaging data sets of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) High Resolution Channel (HRC) of the central region of NGC 1156 (26" X 29") available in the HST archive for this study. From the (U-B, B-V) color-color diagram, we first estimate the total (foreground + internal) reddening toward NGC 1156 of E(B-V) =0.35 +/- 0.05 mag, whereas only the foreground reddening was previously known to be E(B-V)=0.16 mag (Burstein & Heiles) or 0.24 mag (Schlegel, Finkbeiner, & Davis). Based on the brightest stars method, selecting the three brightest blue supergiant (BSG) stars with mean B magnitude of <B(3B)> = 21.94 mag and the three brightest red supergiant (RSG) stars with mean V magnitude of <V(3R)> = 22.76 mag, we derive the distance modulus to NGC 1156 to be (m-M)_{0,BSG} = 29.55 mag and (m-M)_{0,RSG} = 29.16 mag. By using weights of 1 and 1.5 for the distance moduli from using the BSGs and the RSGs, respectively, we finally obtain the weighted mean distance modulus to NGC 1156 (m-M)_0 = 29.39 +/- 0.20 mag (d = 7.6 +/- 0.7 Mpc), which is in very good agreement with the previous estimates. Combining the photometry data of this study with those of Karachentsev et al. gives smaller distance to NGC 1156, which is discussed together with the limits of the data.

A pixel analysis is carried out on the interacting face-on spiral galaxy NGC 5194 (M51A), using the HST/ACS images in the F435W, F555W and F814W (BVI) bands. After 4x4 binning of the HST/ACS images to secure a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio for each pixel, we derive several quantities describing the pixel color-magnitude diagram (pCMD) of NGC 5194: blue/red color cut, red pixel sequence parameters, blue pixel sequence parameters and blue-to-red pixel ratio. The red sequence pixels are mostly older than 1 Gyr, while the blue sequence pixels are mostly younger than 1 Gyr, in their luminosity-weighted mean stellar ages. The color variation in the red pixel sequence from V = 20 mag arcsec^(-2) to V = 17 mag arcsec^(-2) corresponds to a metallicity variation of Δ[Fe/H] ~ 2 or an optical depth variation of Δτ_V ~ 4 by dust, but the actual sequence is thought to originate from the combination of those two effects. At V < 20 mag arcsec^(-2), the color variation in the blue pixel sequence corresponds to an age variation from 5 Myr to 300 Myr under the assumption of solar metallicity and τ_V = 1. To investigate the spatial distributions of stellar populations, we divide pixel stellar populations using the pixel color-color diagram and population synthesis models. As a result, we find that the pixel population distributions across the spiral arms agree with a compressing process by spiral density waves: dense dust \rightarrow newly-formed stars. The tidal interaction between NGC 5194 and NGC 5195 appears to enhance the star formation at the tidal bridge connecting the two galaxies. We find that the pixels corresponding to the central active galactic nucleus (AGN) area of NGC 5194 show a tight sequence at the bright-end of the pCMD, which are in the region of R ~ 100 pc and may be a photometric indicator of AGN properties.

We present an analysis of the scientific ("refereed") paper productivity of the current largest (diameter >8 m) ground-based optical(-infrared) telescopes during the ten year period from 2000 to 2009. The telescopes for which we have gathered and analysed the scientific publication data are the two 10 m Keck telescopes, the four 8.2 m Very Large Telescopes (VLT), the two 8.1 m Gemini telescopes, the 8.2 m Subaru telescope, and the 9.2 m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). We have analysed the rate of papers published in various astronomical journals produced by using these telescopes. While the total numbers of papers from these observatories are largest for the VLT followed by Keck, Gemini, Subaru, and HET, the number of papers produced by each component of the telescopes are largest for Keck followed by VLT, Subaru, Gemini, and HET. In 2009, each telescope of the Keck, VLT, Gemini, Subaru, and HET observatories produced 135, 109, 93, 107, and 5 refereed papers, respectively. We have shown that each telescope of the Keck, VLT, Gemini, and Subaru observatories is producing 2.1 +/- 0.9 Nature and Science papers annually and the rate of these papers among all the refereed papers produced by using that telescope is 1.7 +/- 0.8 %. Extending this relation, we propose that this ratio of the number of Nature and Science papers over the number of whole refereed papers that will be produced by future extremely large telescopes (ELTs) will be remained similar. From the comparison of the publication trends of the above telescopes, we suggest that (i) having more than one telescope of the same kind at the same location and (ii) increasing the number of instruments available at the telescope are good ways to maximize the paper productivity.

We find that a repulsive potential of graphene in the presence of a magnetic field has bound states that are peaked inside the barrier with tails extending over \ell(N + 1), where \ell and N are the magnetic length and Landau level(LL) index. We have investigated how these bound states affect scaling properties of the induced density of filled Landau levels of massless Dirac fermions. For chiral fermions we find, in strong coupling regime, that the density inside the repulsive potential can be greater than the value in the absence of the potential while in the weak coupling regime we find negative induced density. Similar results hold also for non-chiral fermions. As one moves from weak to strong coupling regimes the effective coupling constant between the potential and electrons becomes more repulsive, and then it changes sign and becomes attractive. Different power-laws of induced density are found for chiral and non-chiral fermions.

We present a study on four new star clusters discovered in the halo of the intriguing dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 from a wide field survey covering 3 deg x 3 deg area carried out with MegaCam at Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). The star clusters have extended structures with half-light radii R_h ~ 7.5 -- 14.0 pc, larger than typical Galactic globular clusters and other known globular clusters in NGC 6822. The integrated colors and color magnitude diagrams (CMD) of resolved stars suggest that the new star clusters are 2 -- 10 Gyr old and relatively metal poor with Z=0.0001--0.004 based on the comparison with theoretical models. The projected distance of each star cluster from the galaxy center ranges from 10.7 arcmin (~ 1.5 kpc) to 77 arcmin (~ 11 kpc), far beyond the optical body of the galaxy. Interestingly, the new star clusters are aligned along the elongated old stellar halo of NGC 6822, which is almost perpendicular to the HI gas distribution where young stellar populations exist. We also find that the colors and half-light radii of the new clusters are correlated with the galactocentric distance: clusters farther from the galaxy center are larger and bluer than those closer to the galaxy center. We discuss the stellar structure and evolution of NGC 6822 implied by these new extended star clusters in the halo. We also discuss the current status of observational and theoretical understandings regarding the origin of extended star clusters in NGC 6822 and other galaxies.

We present a study of the optical spectral properties of 115 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) in the southern sky. Using the optical spectra obtained at CTIO 4 m and provided by the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and the 6dF Galaxy Survey, we measure emission line widths and fluxes for spectral classification. We determine the spectral types of ULIRGs with H_alpha measurement using the standard diagnostic diagrams. For ULIRGs without H_alpha measurement, we determine their spectral types using the plane of flux ratio between [OIII]_lambda5007 and H_beta versus [OIII] line width based on our new empirical criterion. This criterion is efficient to distinguish active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from non-AGN galaxies with completeness and reliability of about 90 per cent. The sample of 115 ULIRGs is found to consist of 8 broad-line AGNs, 49 narrow-line AGNs, and 58 non-AGNs. The AGN fraction is on average 50 per cent and increases with infrared luminosity and IRAS 25-60 micron colour, consistent with previous studies. The IRAS 25-60 micron colour distributions are significantly different between AGN and non-AGN ULIRGs, while their IRAS 60-100 micron colour distributions are similar.

We find that the total probability of finding the electron in the barrier can be nearly one while it is almost zero outside the barrier. In addition, for each electron state of a graphene antidot there is a dot state with exactly the same wavefunction but with a different energy. This symmetry is a consequence of Klein tunneling of Dirac electrons. Moreover, in zigzag nanoribbons we find strong coupling between some antidot states and zigzag edge states. Experimental tests of these effects are proposed.

In neutral graphene dots the Fermi level coincides with the Dirac points. We have investigated in the presence of a magnetic field several unusual properties of single electron states near the Fermi level of such a rectangular-shaped graphene dot with two zigzag and two armchair edges. We find that a quasi-degenerate level forms near zero energy and the number of states in this level can be tuned by the magnetic field. The wavefunctions of states in this level are all peaked on the zigzag edges with or without some weight inside the dot. Some of these states are magnetic field-independent surface states while the others are field-dependent. We have found a scaling result from which the number of magnetic field-dependent states of large dots can be inferred from those of smaller dots.

These parameters generally agree well with those obtained from the previous studies on Tr 5 and confirms that this cluster is an old OC with metallicity being metal-poorer than solar abundance, located in the anti-Galactic center region.

For the inner region of r<50 arcsec, three blue straggler candidates are newly found in addition to the objects Kaluzny (1988) already found. The color-color diagrams show that the reddening value toward NGC 1193 is E(B-V) =0.19 +/- 0.04. From the ultraviolet excess measurement, we derived the metallicity to be [Fe/H]=-0.45 +/- 0.12. A distance modulus of (m-M)_0 =13.3 +/- 0.15 is obtained from zero age main sequence fitting with the empirically calibrated Hyades isochrone of Pinsonneault et al. (2004). CMD comparison with the Padova isochrones by Bertelli et al. (1994) gives an age of log t =9.7 +/- 0.1.

In the presence of spin-orbit coupling and inversion symmetry of the lateral confinement potential a single electron does not exhibit matrix Berry phases in quasi-two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots. In such a system we investigate whether many-body correlation effects can lead to finite matrix Berry phases. We find that the transformation properties of many-electron wavefunctions under two-dimensional inversion operation do not allow finite matrix Berry phases. This effect is exact and is independent of the form of electron-electron interactions. On the other hand, quasi-two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots with lateral confinement potential without inversion symmetry can have finite matrix Berry phases. We find that many-body quantum fluctuations can change matrix Berry phases significantly in such systems.

We present a photometric study of the globular clusters in the giant elliptical galaxy M60 in the Virgo cluster, based on deep, relatively wide field Washington CT_1 CCD images. The color-magnitude diagram reveals a significant population of globular clusters in M60, and a large number of young luminous clusters in NGC 4647, a small companion spiral galaxy north-west of M60. The color distribution of the globular clusters in M60 is clearly bimodal, with a blue peak at (C-T_1)=1.37, and a red peak at (C-T_1)=1.87. We derive two new transformation relations between the (C-T_1)_0 color and [Fe/H] using the data for the globular clusters in our Galaxy and M49. Using these relations we derive the metallicity distribution of the globular clusters in M60, which is also bimodal: a dominant metal-poor component with center at [Fe/H]=-1.2, and a weaker metal-rich component with center at [Fe/H]=-0.2. The radial number density profile of the globular clusters is more extended than that of the stellar halo, and the radial number density profile of the blue globular clusters is more extended than that of the red globular clusters. The number density maps of the globular clusters show that the spatial distribution of the blue globular clusters is roughly circular, while that of the red globular cluster is elongated similarly to that of the stellar halo. We estimate the total number of the globular clusters in M60 to be 3600+/-500$,and the specific frequency to be S_N=3.8+/-0.4. The mean color of the bright blue globular clusters gets redder as they get brighter in both the inner and outer region of M60. This blue tilt is seen also in the outer region of M49, the brightest Virgo galaxy. Implications of these results are discussed.

We present a kinematic analysis of the globular cluster(GC) system in M31. Using the photometric and spectroscopic database of 504 GCs, we have investigated the kinematics of the M31 GC system. We find that the all GC system shows strong rotation, with rotation amplitude of v_rot~190km/s, and that a weak rotation persists even for the outermost samples at |Y|>5kpc. The rotation-corrected velocity dispersion for the GC system is estimated to be sigma_{p,r}~130km/s, and it increases from sigma_{p,r}~120km/s at |Y|<1kpc to sigma_{p,r}~150km/s at |Y|>5kpc. These results are very similar to those for the metal-poor GCs. This shows that there is a dynamically hot halo in M31 that is rotating but primarily pressure-supported. We have identified 50 "friendless" GCs, and they appear to rotate around the major axis of M31. For the subsamples of metal-poor and metal-rich GCs, we have found that the metal-rich GCs are more centrally concentrated than the metal-poor GCs, and both subsamples show strong rotation. For the subsamples of bright and faint GCs, it is found that the rotation for the faint GCs is stronger than that for the bright GCs. We have identified 56 GCs and GC candidates with X-ray detection. It is found that the majority of X-ray emitting GCs follow the disk rotation, and that the redder, more metal-rich, and brighter GCs are more likely to be detected as X-ray emitting GCs. We have derived a rotation curve of M31 using the GCs at |Y|<0.6kpc. We have estimated the dynamical mass of M31 using `Projected Mass Estimator(PME)' and `Tracer Mass Estimator(TME)'. We finally discuss the implication of these results and compare the kinematics of GCs with that of planetary nebulae in M31.

We present a kinematic analysis of the globular cluster (GC) system in the giant elliptical galaxy (gE) M60 in the Virgo cluster. Using the photometric and spectroscopic database of 121 GCs (83 blue GCs and 38 red GCs), we have investigated the kinematics of the GC system. We have found that the M60 GC system shows a significant overall rotation. The rotation amplitude of the blue GCs is slightly smaller than or similar to that of the red GCs, and their angles of rotation axes are similar. The velocity dispersions about the mean velocity and about the best fit rotation curve for the red GCs are marginally larger than those for the blue GCs. Comparison of observed stellar and GC velocity dispersion profiles with those calculated from the stellar mass profile shows that the mass-to-light ratio should be increased as the galactocentric distance increases, indicating the existence of an extended dark matter halo. The entire sample of GCs in M60 is found to have a tangentially biased velocity ellipsoid unlike the GC systems in other gEs. Two subsamples appear to have different velocity ellipsoids. The blue GC system has a modest tangentially biased velocity ellipsoid, while the red GC system has a modest radially biased or an isotropic velocity ellipsoid. From the comparison of the kinematic properties of the M60 GC system to those of other gEs (M87, M49, NGC 1399, NGC 5128, and NGC 4636), it is found that the velocity dispersion of the blue GC system is similar to or larger than that of the red GC system except for M60, and the rotation of the GC system is not negligible. The entire sample of each GC system shows an isotropic velocity ellipsoid except for M60, while the subsamples show diverse velocity ellipsoids. We discuss the implication of these results for the formation models of the GC system in gEs.

Target globular cluster candidates were selected using the Washington photometry based on the deep $16\arcmin \times 16\arcmin$ images taken at the KPNO 4m and using the $VI$ photometry derived from the HST/WFPC2 archive images. The spectra of the target objects were obtained using the Multi-Object Spectrograph (MOS) at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). We have measured the radial velocity for 111 objects in the field of M60: 93 globular clusters (72 blue globular clusters with $1.0\le(C-T_1)<1.7$ and 21 red globular clusters with $1.7\le(C-T_1)<2.4$), 11 foreground stars, 6 small galaxies, and the nucleus of M60. The measured velocities of the 93 globular clusters range from $\sim 500$ km s$^{-1}$ to $\sim 1600$ km s$^{-1}$, with a mean value of $1070_{-25}^{+27}$ km s$^{-1}$, which is in good agreement with the velocity of the nucleus of M60 ($v_{\rm gal}=1056$ km s$^{-1}$). Combining our results with data in the literature, we present a master catalog of radial velocities for 121 globular clusters in M60. The velocity dispersion of the globular clusters in the master catalog is found to be $234_{-14}^{+13}$ km s$^{-1}$ for the entire sample, $223_{-16}^{+13}$ km s$^{-1}$ for 83 blue globular clusters, and $258_{-31}^{+21}$ km s$^{-1}$ for 38 red globular clusters.

Color-magnitude diagrams of the Sextans dSph show well-defined red giant branch (RGB), blue horizontal branch (BHB), prominent red horizontal branch (RHB), asymptotic giant branch (AGB), about 120 variable star candidates including RR Lyraes and anomalous Cepheids, about 230 blue stragglers (BSs), and main sequence (MS) stars. The distance to the galaxy is derived using the $I$-band magnitude of the tip of the RGB at I(TRGB)=15.95+/-0.04: (m-M)_0=19.90+/-0.06 for an adopted reddening of E(B-V)=0.01. The mean metallicity of the RGB is estimated from the (V-I) color: [Fe/H]=-2.1+/-0.1(statistical error) +/-0.2(standard calibration error) dex, with a dispersion of sigma[Fe/H]=0.2 dex. The age of the MSTO of the main old population is estimated to be similar to that of M92, and there are seen some stellar populations with younger age. There is found to be one RGB bump at V=19.95+/-0.05 mag (M_V=0.03 mag), and a weak brighter bump at V=19.35+/-0.05 mag(Mv=-0.58 mag) which is probably an AGB bump. The V-band luminosity function of the RGB and MS stars is in general similar to that of M92, with a slight excess of stars in the magnitude range brighter than the MSTO with respect to that of M92. The bright BSs are more centrally concentrated than the faint BSs. Significant radial gradients are seen for several kinds of populations: the RHB, the red RGB, the red subgiant branch (SGB), and the bright BSs are more centrally concentrated toward the center of the galaxy, compared with the BHB, the blue RGB, the blue SGB, and the faint BSs, respectively.

Abstract:
We present a study of the old open cluster Trumpler 5 (Tr 5), based on the CDS archival data. From the color-magnitude diagrams of Tr 5, we have found the positions of main-sequence turn-off (MSTO) and red giant clump (RGC) stars. Using the mean magnitude of the RGC stars, we have estimated the reddening toward Tr 5, E(B-V) = 0.60 +/- 0.10. Using the stars common in two data sets and the theoret…

Using the stars common in two data sets and the theoretical isochrones of Padova group, we have estimated the distance modulus V_0-M_V=12.64 +/- 0.20 (d = 3.4 +/- 0.3 kpc), the metallicity [Fe/H] = -0.30 +/- 0.10, and the age of 2.4 +/- 0.2 Gyr (log t=9.38). These metallicity and distance values are consistent with the relation between the metallicity and the Galactocentric distance of other old open clusters, for which we obtain the slope of Delta_[Fe/H]/R_gc= -0.064 +/- 0.010 dex/kpc.

We present UBVI CCD photometry of the stellar contents and globular cluster(GC) candidates in the spiral galaxy NGC 300 in the Sculptor group. Color-magnitude diagrams for 18 OB associations having more than 30 member stars are presented. The slope of the initial mass function for the bright stars in NGC 300 is estimated to be Gamma = -2.6 +/- 0.3. Assuming the distance to NGC 300 of (m-M)_0 = 26.53 +/- 0.07, the mean absolute magnitude of three brightest blue stars is obtained to be <M_V^{BSG}(3)> = -8.95 mag. We have performed search for GCs in NGC 300 and have found 17 GC candidates in this galaxy. Some characteristics of these GC candidates are discussed.

Abstract:
We have studied the response of Tl-doped and Na-doped CsI crystals to nuclear recoils and $γ$'s below 10 keV. The response of CsI crystals to nuclear recoil was studied with mono-energetic neutrons produced by the $^3$H(p,n)$^3$He reaction. This was compared to the response to Compton electrons scattered by 662 keV $γ$-ray. Pulse shape discrimination between the response to these $γ$'s and nucle…

The response of CsI crystals to nuclear recoil was studied with mono-energetic neutrons produced by the $^3$H(p,n)$^3$He reaction. This was compared to the response to Compton electrons scattered by 662 keV $γ$-ray. Pulse shape discrimination between the response to these $γ$'s and nuclear recoils was studied, and quality factors were estimated. The quenching factors for nuclear recoils were derived for both CsI(Na) and CsI(Tl) crystals.
