The fifth Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-V) Local Volume Mapper (LVM) is a wide-field integral field unit (IFU) survey that uses an array of four 160 mm fixed telescopes with siderostats to minimize the number of moving parts. Individual telescope observes the science field or calibration field independently and is synchronized with the science exposure. We developed the LVM Acquisition and Guiding Package (LVMAGP) optimized telescope control software program for LVM observations, which can simultaneously control four focusers, three K-mirrors, one fiber selector, four mounts (siderostats), and seven guide cameras. This software is built on a hierarchical architecture and the SDSS framework and provides three key sequences: autofocus, field acquisition, and autoguide. We designed and fabricated a proto-model siderostat to test the telescope pointing model and LVMAGP software. The mirrors of the proto-model were designed as an isogrid open-back type, which reduced the weight by 46% and enabled reaching thermal equilibrium quickly. Additionally, deflection due to bolting torque, self-gravity, and thermal deformation was simulated, and the maximum scatter of the pointing model induced by the tilt of optomechanics was predicted to be $4'.4$, which can be compensated for by the field acquisition sequence. We performed a real sky test of LVMAGP with the proto-model siderostat and obtained field acquisition and autoguide accuracies of $0''.38$ and $1''.5$, respectively. It met all requirements except for the autoguide specification, which will be resolved by more precise alignment among the hardware components at Las Campanas Observatory.

The design of a CubeSat telescope for academic research purposes must balance complicated optical and structural designs with cost to maximize performance in extreme environments. Increasing the CubeSat size (eg. 6U to 12U) will increase the potential optical performance, but the cost will increase in kind. Recent developments in diamond-turning have increased the accessibility of aspheric aluminum mirrors, enabling a cost-effective regime of well-corrected nanosatellite telescopes. We present an all-aluminum versatile CubeSat telescope (VCT) platform that optimizes performance, cost, and schedule at a relatively large 95 mm aperture and 0.4 degree diffraction limited full field of view stablized by MEMS fine-steering modules. This study features a new design tool that permits easy characterization of performance degradation as a function of spacecraft thermal and structural disturbances. We will present details including the trade between on- and off-axis implementations of the VCT, thermal stability requirements and finite-element analysis, and launch survival considerations. The VCT is suitable for a range of CubeSat borne applications, which provides an affordable platform for astronomy, Earth-imaging, and optical communications.

This study investigates the relationship of the equity home bias with 1) the country-level behavioral unfamiliarity, and 2) the home-foreign return correlation. We set the hypotheses that 1) unfamiliarity about foreign equities plays a role in the portfolio set up and 2) the correlation of return on home and foreign equities affects the equity home bias when there is a lack of information about foreign equities. For the empirical analysis, the proportion of respondents to the question "How much do you trust? - People you meet for the first time" is used as a proxy measure for country-specific unfamiliarity. Based on the eleven developed countries for which such data are available, we implement a feasible generalized linear squares (FGLS) method. Empirical results suggest that country-specific unfamiliarity has a significant and positive correlation with the equity home bias. When it comes to the correlation of return between home and foreign equities, we identify that there is a negative correlation with the equity home bias, which is against our hypothesis. Moreover, an excess return on home equities compared to foreign ones is found to have a positive correlation with the equity home bias, which is consistent with the comparative statics only if foreign investors have a sufficiently higher risk aversion than domestic investors. We check the robustness of our empirical analysis by fitting alternative specifications and use a log-transformed measure of the equity home bias, resulting in consistent results with ones with the original measure.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate the Transformable Reflective Telescope (TRT) Kit for educational purposes and for performing various optical tests with a single kit. The TRT Kit is a portable optical bench setup suitable for interferometry, spectroscopy, measuring stray light, and develo** adaptive optics, among other uses. Supplementary modules may be integrated easily thanks to the modular design of the TRT Kit. The Kit consists of five units; a primary mirror module, a secondary mirror module, a mounting base module, a baffle module, and an alignment module. Precise alignment and focusing are achieved using a precision optical rail on the alignment module. The TRT Kit transforms into three telescope configurations: Newtonian, Cassegrain, and Gregorian. Students change telescope configurations by exchanging the secondary mirror. The portable design and the aluminum primary mirror of the TRT Kit enable students to perform experiments in various environments. The minimized baffle design utilizes commercial telescope tubes, allowing users to look directly into the optical system while suppressing stray light down to $\sim$10$^{-8}$ point source transmittance (PST). The TRT Kit was tested using a point source and field images. Point source measurement of the Newtonian telescope configuration resulted in an 80\% encircled energy diameter (EED) of 23.8 $μ$m.

This is a prototype of an off-axis telescope that enables very wide field of view (FoV) infrared satellites that can observe Paschen-$α$ emission, zodiacal light, integrated star light, and other infrared sources. It has the entrance pupil diameter of 150 mm, the focal length of 500 mm, and the FoV of 5.5$^\circ$ $\times$ 4.1$^\circ$. LAF-TMS is an obscuration-free off-axis system with minimal out-of-field baffling and no optical support structure diffraction. This optical design is analytically optimized to remove linear astigmatism and to reduce high-order aberrations. Sensitivity analysis and Monte-Carlo simulation reveal that tilt errors are the most sensitive alignment parameters that allow $\sim$1$^\prime$. Optomechanical structure accurately mounts aluminum mirrors, and withstands satellite-level vibration environments. LAF-TMS shows optical performance with 37 $μ$m FWHM of the point source image satisfying Nyquist sampling requirements for typical 18 $μ$m pixel Infrared array detectors. The surface figure errors of mirrors and scattered light from the tertiary mirror with 4.9 nm surface micro roughness may affect the measured point spread function (PSF). Optical tests successfully demonstrate constant optical performance over wide FoV, indicating that LAF-TMS suppresses linear astigmatism and high-order aberrations.

Sensing and manipulating targets hidden under scattering media are universal problems that take place in applications ranging from deep-tissue optical imaging to laser surgery. A major issue in these applications is the shallow light penetration caused by multiple scattering that reflects most of incident light. Although advances have been made to eliminate image distortion by a scattering medium, dealing with the light reflection has remained unchallenged. Here we present a method to minimize reflected intensity by finding and coupling light into the anti-reflection modes of a scattering medium. In doing so, we achieved more than a factor of 3 increase in light penetration. Our method of controlling reflected waves makes it readily applicable to in vivo applications in which detector sensors can only be positioned at the same side of illumination and will therefore lay the foundation of advancing the working depth of many existing optical imaging and treatment technologies.

We develop a proto-model of an off-axis reflective telescope for infrared wide-field observations based on the design of Schwarzschild-Chang type telescope. With only two mirrors, this design achieves an entrance pupil diameter of 50 mm and an effective focal length of 100 mm. We can apply this design to a mid-infrared telescope with a field of view of 8 deg X 8 deg. In spite of the substantial advantages of off-axis telescopes in the infrared compared to refractive or on-axis reflective telescopes, it is known to be difficult to align the mirrors in off-axis systems because of their asymmetric structures. Off-axis mirrors of our telescope are manufactured at the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI). We analyze the fabricated mirror surfaces by fitting polynomial functions to the measured data. We accomplish alignment of this two-mirror off-axis system using a ray tracing method. A simple imaging test is performed to compare a pinhole image with a simulated prediction.

A one - dimensional iterative map with two control parameters, i.e. the Kim - Kong map, is proposed. Our purpose is to investigate the characteristic properties of this map, and to discuss numerically the multifractal behavior of the normalized first passage time. Especially, based on the Monte Carlo simulation, the normalized first passage time to arrive at the absorbing barrier after starting from an arbitrary site is mainly obtained in the presence of both absorption and reflection on a two - dimensional Sierpinski gasket. We also discuss the multifractal spectra of the normalized first passage time, and the numerical result of the Kim - Kong model presented will be compared with that of the Sinai and logistic models.

Lett. 77, 135 (1996)]. To provide further understanding of this structure, we have performed low-temperature measurements of a novel design of 1D channel with overlaying finger gates to study the 0.7 structure as a function of lateral confinement strength and potential profile. We found that the structure persists when the lateral confinement strength is changed by a factor of 2. We have also shown that the 0.7 structure present in two 1D channels in series behaves like a single 1D channel which shows the 0.7 structure, demonstrating that the 0.7 structure is not a transmission effect through a ballistic channel at zero in-plane magnetic field.

We have measured the low-temperature transport properties of an open quantum dot formed in a clean one-dimensional channel. For the first time, at zero magnetic field, continuous and periodic oscillations superimposed upon ballistic conductance steps are observed when the conductance through the dot $G$ exceeds $2e^2/h$. We ascribe the observed conductance oscillations to evidence for Coulomb charging effects in an open dot. This is supported by the evolution of the oscillating features for $G>2e^2/h$ as a function of both temperature and barrier transparency. Our results strongly suggest that at zero magnetic field, current theoretical and experimental understanding of Coulomb charging effects overlooks charging in the presence of fully transmitted 1D channels.
