Tail diameter upper bounds for polytopes and polyhedra
Abstract: In 1992, Kalai and Kleitman proved a quasipolynomial upper bound on the diameters of convex polyhedra. Todd and Sukegawa-Kitahara proved tail-quasipolynomial bounds on the diameters of polyhedra. These tail bounds apply when the number of facets is greater than a certain function of the dimension. We prove tail-quasipolynomial bounds on the diameters of polytopes and normal simplicial complexes. W… ▽ More

An improved upper bound on the diameters of subset partition graphs
Abstract: In 1992, Kalai and Kleitman proved the first subexponential upper bound for the diameters of convex polyhedra. Eisenbrand et al. proved this bound holds for connected layer families, a novel approach to analyzing polytope diameters. Very recently, Todd improved the Kalai-Kleitman bound for polyhedra to $(n-d)^{1+\log_2d}$. In this note, we prove an analogous upper bound on the diameters of subset… ▽ More

Superlinear subset partition graphs with dimension reduction, strong adjacency, and endpoint count
Abstract: We construct a sequence of subset partition graphs satisfying the dimension reduction, adjacency, strong adjacency, and endpoint count properties whose diameter has a superlinear asymptotic lower bound. These abstractions of polytope graphs give further evidence against the Linear Hirsch Conjecture.

Combinatorics and Geometry of Transportation Polytopes: An Update
Abstract: A transportation polytope consists of all multidimensional arrays or tables of non-negative real numbers that satisfy certain sum conditions on subsets of the entries. They arise naturally in optimization and statistics, and also have interest for discrete mathematics because permutation matrices, latin squares, and magic squares appear naturally as lattice points of these polytopes. In this pap… ▽ More

Coupling an electron spin in a semiconductor quantum dot to an optical nano-cavity
Abstract: We propose a scheme to efficiently couple a single quantum dot electron spin to an optical nano-cavity, which enables us to simultaneously benefit from a cavity as an efficient photonic interface, as well as to perform high fidelity (nearly 100%) spin initialization and manipulation achievable in bulk semiconductors. Moreover, the presence of the cavity speeds up the spin initialization process be… ▽ More

A note on the diameter of transportation polytopes with prescribed source degrees
Abstract: Brightwell, van den Heuvel and Stougie proved that the diameter of an $m \times n$ transportation polytope is at most $8(m+n-2)$, a factor of eight away from the Hirsch Conjecture. This bound was improved to $3(m+n-1)$ by Hurkens. We investigate diameters for certain classes of transportation polytopes. Note: After the completion of this note, we discovered that the class of transportation polyt… ▽ More

The effect of photo-generated carriers on the spectral diffusion of a quantum dot coupled to a photonic crystal cavity
Abstract: We experimentally observe the effect of photo-generated carriers on the spectral diffusion of a quantum dot (QD) coupled to a photonic crystal (PC) cavity. In this system, spectral diffusion arises in part from charge fluctuations on the etched surfaces of the PC. We find that these fluctuations may be suppressed by photo-generated carriers, leading to a reduction of the measured QD linewidth by a… ▽ More

Polyhedral graph abstractions and an approach to the Linear Hirsch Conjecture
Abstract: We introduce a new combinatorial abstraction for the graphs of polyhedra. The new abstraction is a flexible framework defined by combinatorial properties, with each collection of properties taken providing a variant for studying the diameters of polyhedral graphs. One particular variant has a diameter which satisfies the best known upper bound on the diameters of polyhedra. Another variant has sup… ▽ More

Coherent Optical Spectroscopy of a Single Quantum Dot Via an Off-Resonant Cavity
Abstract: In recent experiments on coupled quantum dot (QD) optical cavity systems a pronounced interaction between the dot and the cavity has been observed even for detunings of many cavity linewidths. This interaction has been attributed to an incoherent phonon-mediated scattering process and is absent in atomic systems. Here, we demonstrate that despite its incoherent nature, this process preserves the s… ▽ More

Phonon Mediated Off-Resonant Quantum Dot-Cavity Coupling
Abstract: A theoretical model for the phonon-mediated off-resonant coupling between a quantum dot and a cavity, under resonant excitation of the quantum dot, is presented. We show that the coupling is caused by electron-phonon interaction in the quantum dot and is enhanced by the cavity. We analyze recently observed resonant quantum dot spectroscopic data by our theoretical model.

Geometric Combinatorics of Transportation Polytopes and the Behavior of the Simplex Method
Abstract: This dissertation investigates the geometric combinatorics of convex polytopes and connections to the behavior of the simplex method for linear programming. We focus our attention on transportation polytopes, which are sets of all tables of non-negative real numbers satisfying certain summation conditions. Transportation problems are, in many ways, the simplest kind of linear programs and thus hav… ▽ More

Fast spin rotations by optically controlled geometric phases in a quantum dot
Abstract: We demonstrate optical control of the geometric phase acquired by one of the spin states of an electron confined in a charge-tunable InAs quantum dot via cyclic 2pi excitations of an optical transition in the dot. An update on the Hirsch conjecture
Abstract: The Hirsch conjecture was posed in 1957 in a letter from Warren M. Hirsch to George Dantzig. It states that the graph of a d-dimensional polytope with n facets cannot have diameter greater than n - d. Despite being one of the most fundamental, basic and old problems in polytope theory, what we know is quite scarce. Most notably, no polynomial upper bound is known for the diameters that are con… ▽ More

A Single Charged Quantum Dot in a Strong Optical Field: Absorption, Gain, and the AC Stark Effect
Abstract: We investigate a singly-charged quantum dot under a strong optical driving field by probing the system with a weak optical field. When the driving field is detuned from the trion transition, the probe absorption spectrum is shifted from the trion resonance as a consequence of the dynamic Stark effect. Simultaneously, a gain sideband is created, resulting from the coherent energy transfer between… ▽ More
