Determination of $|V_{cb}|$ using $\overline{B}^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\barν_\ell$ decays with Belle II

Abstract: We determine the CKM matrix-element magnitude $|V_{cb}|$ using $\overline{B}^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\barν_\ell$ decays reconstructed in $189 \, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of collision data collected by the Belle II experiment, located at the SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. Partial decay rates are reported as functions of the recoil parameter $w$ and three decay angles separately for electron and muon final states.… ▽ More We determine the CKM matrix-element magnitude $|V_{cb}|$ using $\overline{B}^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\barν_\ell$ decays reconstructed in $189 \, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of collision data collected by the Belle II experiment, located at the SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We obtain $|V_{cb}|$ using the Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed and Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert parametrizations, and find $|V_{cb}|_\mathrm{BGL}=(40.57\pm 0.31 \pm 0.95\pm 0.58)\times 10^{-3}$ and $|V_{cb}|_\mathrm{CLN}=(40.13 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.93\pm 0.58 )\times 10^{-3}$ with the uncertainties denoting statistical components, systematic components, and components from the lattice QCD input, respectively. The branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(\overline{B}^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\barν_\ell)=(4.922 \pm 0.023 \pm 0.220)\%$. The ratio of branching fractions for electron and muon final states is found to be $0.998 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.020$. In addition, we determine the forward-backward angular asymmetry and the $D^{*+}$ longitudinal polarization fractions. All results are compatible with lepton-flavor universality in the Standard Model. △ Less

Search for charged-lepton flavor violation in $Υ(2S) \to \ell^\mpτ^\pm$ ($\ell=e,μ$) decays at Belle

Abstract: We report a search for the charged-lepton flavor violation in $Υ(2S) \to \ell^\mpτ^\pm$ ($\ell=e,μ$) decays using a $25~\fbi$ $Υ(2S)$ sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}$$e^-$ asymmetric-energy collider. We find no evidence for a signal and set upper limits on the branching fractions ($\mathcal{B}$) at 90\% confidence level. We obtain $R_1/R_2 = 9.7\pm 2.3 \pm 1.1$, $6.8 \pm 2.1 \pm 0.8$, $10.2 \pm 3.3 \pm 2.5$, and $3.4 \pm 2.1 \pm 0.5$ for the $D_s^+ D_{s1}(2536)^-$, $D_s^{*+} D_{s1}(2536)^-$, $D_s^+ D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^{-}$, and $D_s^{*+} D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^{-}$ final states in the $D_{sJ}^-\to K^{-} \bar{D}^{(*)0}$ modes, respectively. Therefore, the strong decay is expected to dominate in the $Υ(2S)\to D_{s}^{(*)+}D_{sJ}^-$ processes. We also measure the ratios of branching fractions ${\cal B}(D_{s1}(2536)^-\to K_S^0 D^{*}(2010)^{-})/{\cal B}(D_{s1}(2536)^-\to K^{-} D^{*}(2007)^0) = 0.48 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.02$ and ${\cal B}(D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^- \to K_S^0 D^-)/{\cal B}(D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^- \to K^{-}D^0) = 0.49 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.02$, which are consistent with isospin symmetry. Measurement of branching-fraction ratios and $CP$ asymmetries in $B^{\pm} \to D_{CP\pm}K^{\pm}$ decays at Belle and Belle II

Abstract: We report results from a study of $B^\pm \rightarrow DK^\pm$ decays followed by $D$ decaying to $CP$~eigenstates, where $D$ indicates a $D^0$ or $\bar{D}^{0}$ meson. These decays are sensitive to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity-triangle angle $φ_{3}$. The results are based on a combined analysis of the final data set of $772 \times 10^6~B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and… ▽ More We report results from a study of $B^\pm \rightarrow DK^\pm$ decays followed by $D$ decaying to $CP$~eigenstates, where $D$ indicates a $D^0$ or $\bar{D}^{0}$ meson. These decays are sensitive to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity-triangle angle $φ_{3}$. The results are based on a combined analysis of the final data set of $772 \times 10^6~B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and a data set of $198 \times 10^6~B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle~II experiment, both in electron-positron collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. We measure the $CP$ asymmetries to be $\mathcal{ A}_{CP +} =~(+12.5 \pm 5.8 \pm 1.4)\% $ and $\mathcal{ A}_{CP -} =~(-16.7 \pm 5.7 \pm 0.6)\%$, and the ratios of branching fractions to be $\mathcal{ R}_{CP+}=~1.164 \pm 0.081 \pm 0.036 $ and $\mathcal{ R}_{CP-} =~1.151 \pm 0.074 \pm 0.019$. The first contribution to the uncertainties is statistical, and the second is systematic. The asymmetries $\mathcal{A}_{CP +}$ and $\mathcal{A}_{CP -}$ have similar magnitudes and opposite signs; their difference corresponds to 3.5~standard deviations. From these values we calculate 68.3\% confidence intervals of ($8.5^{\circ}<φ_{3}<16.5^{\circ}$) or ($84.5^{\circ}<φ_{3}<95.5^{\circ}$) or ($163.3^{\circ}<φ_{3}<171.5^{\circ}$) and $0.321<r_{B}<0.465$. △ Less

Abstract: We present a measurement of time-dependent rate asymmetries in $B^0\to φK^0_S$ decays to search for non-standard-model physics in $b\to q \overline{q}s$ transitions. The data sample is collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider in 2019-2022 and contains $(387\pm 6)\times 10^6$ bottom-antibottom mesons from $Υ(4S)$ resonance decays. The measured direct and mixing-induced $CP$ asymmetries are $A=0.31\pm0.20\pm0.05$ and $S=0.54\pm0.26^{+0.06}_{-0.08}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. Abstract: We report the first search for a non-standard-model resonance decaying into $τ$ pairs in $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-} τ^+τ^-$ events in the 3.6-10 GeV/$c^{2}$ mass range. We use a 62.8 fb$^{-1}$ sample of $e^+e^-$ collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. Origin of superionic state in Earth's inner core

Abstract: Earth's inner core (IC) serves as a reservoir for volatile elements, which significantly affects its behavior and properties. Recent studies suggest that superionicity can be observed in ice and iron hydrides under high-pressure and temperature conditions, providing an alternative understanding of the planet's interior. In this study, we demonstrated that electride formation drives the superionic… ▽ More Earth's inner core (IC) serves as a reservoir for volatile elements, which significantly affects its behavior and properties. Recent studies suggest that superionicity can be observed in ice and iron hydrides under high-pressure and temperature conditions, providing an alternative understanding of the planet's interior. In this study, we demonstrated that electride formation drives the superionic state in iron hydride under IC pressure conditions. The electride stabilizes the iron lattice and provides a pathway for volatile diffusion. The coupling between lattice stability and superionicity is triggered near 100 GPa and enhanced at higher pressures. The electride-driven superionicity can also be generalized for volatiles in other rocky planetary cores. These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms of core formation and evolution of rocky planets. △ Less

Precise measurement of the $D^+_s$ lifetime at Belle II

Abstract: We measure the lifetime of the $D_s^+$ meson using a data sample of 207 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle II experiment running at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The lifetime is determined by fitting the decay-time distribution of a sample of $116\times 10^3$ $D_s^+\rightarrowφπ^+$ decays. Abstract: We search for the $B^0\to p\barΣ^0π^-$ decay with $\barΣ^0 \to \barΛγ$, where the $γ$ is not measured, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 $\rm{fb^{-1}}$ which contains 772 $\times$ $10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs, collected around the $Υ$(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. Search for the double-charmonium state with $η_c J/ψ$ at Belle

Abstract: We measure the cross section of $e^+e^-\rightarrowη_c J/ψ$ at the $Υ(nS) (n=1$ -- $5)$ on-resonance and 10.52 GeV off-resonance energy points using the full data sample collected by the Belle detector with an integrated luminosity of $955~\rm fb^{-1}$. We also search for double charmonium production in $e^+e^-\rightarrowη_c J/ψ$ via initial state radiation near the $η_c J/ψ$ threshold. These results are the first such measurements and are all consistent with zero. They include the first measurement for a $D^+_s$ singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay, and the first measurement for a $D$ meson doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay. We also measure $a^{T\text{-odd}}_{C\!P}$ in different subregions of phase space, where the decays are dominated by different intermediate resonance states such as $D^+\toφρ^+$, $\bar{K}^{*0}K^{*+}$, and $\bar{K}^{*0}ρ^+$; and $D_s^+\to K^{*+}ρ^{0}$, $K^{*0}ρ^{+}$, $φρ^+$, and $\bar{K}^{*0}K^{*+}$. These results include the first observation of $\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0$, $B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0$, and $\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of $\text{B}(B^-\to D^0K^-K_S^0)$ compared to previous measurements. △ Less

The algorithm exploits the correlation between the flavor of a reconstructed neutral $D$ meson (signal $D$ meson) and the electric charges of particles reconstructed in the rest of the $e^+e^-\to c \bar{c}$ event. These include those originating from the decay of the other c… ▽ More We propose a new algorithm for the identification of the production flavor of neutral $D$ mesons in the Belle II experiment. The algorithm exploits the correlation between the flavor of a reconstructed neutral $D$ meson (signal $D$ meson) and the electric charges of particles reconstructed in the rest of the $e^+e^-\to c \bar{c}$ event. These include those originating from the decay of the other charm hadron produced in the event, as well as those possibly produced in association with the signal $D$ meson. We develop the algorithm using simulation and calibrate it in data using decay modes that identify the flavor of the decaying neutral $D$ meson. We use a data sample of $e^+e^-$ collisions, corresponding to $362\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, collected by Belle II at center-of-mass energies near the $Υ(4S)$ mass. The effective tagging efficiency in data is $(47.91 \pm 0.07 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.51 \mathrm{(syst)})\%$, independent of the neutral-$D$-meson decay mode. This charm flavor tagger will approximately double the effective sample size of many $CP$-violation and charm-mixing measurements that so far have exclusively relied on neutral $D$ mesons originating from $D^{*\pm}$ decays. First Simultaneous Determination of Inclusive and Exclusive $\left|V_{ub}\right|$

We separate exclusive $B \to π\, \ell\, \bar ν_{\ell}$ decays from other inclusive $B \to X_u \, \ell\, \bar ν_{\ell}$ and backgrounds with a two-dimensional fit, that utilizes the number of charged pions in the $X_u$ system and the four-momentum transfer $q^2$ between the $B$ and $X_u$ system. Combining our measurement with information from lattice QCD and QCD calculations of the inclusive partial rate as well as external experimental information on the shape of the $B \to π\, \ell\, \bar ν_{\ell}$ form factor, we determine $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}} \right| = (3.78 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.14)\times 10^{-3}$ and $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{incl.}} \right| = (3.88 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-3}$, respectively, with the uncertainties being the statistical error, systematic errors, and theory errors. We study the main sources of the background that can imitate the signal decay, such as kaon and pion decays-in-flight and charged particle scattering on the detector material. Highly efficient methods of their suppression are developed and applied to select 165 signal-candidate events. We obtain $ξ^\prime=0.22\pm0.94\pm0.42$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, and the second one is systematic. Opening long-time investigation window of living matter by nonbleaching phase intensity nanoscope: PINE

However, light-induced degradation of fluorophores, photobleaching, is a significant problem in extended live cell imaging in life science, and excellent prior arts of ST… ▽ More Fundamental to all living organisms and living soft matter are emergent processes in which the reorganization of individual constituents at the nanoscale drives group-level movements and shape changes at the macroscale over time. However, light-induced degradation of fluorophores, photobleaching, is a significant problem in extended live cell imaging in life science, and excellent prior arts of STED, MINSTED, or MINFLUX intentionally apply photobleaching optics for super-resolution, yet lack extended live-cell imaging capability as fluorophores reach an irreversible photobleaching limit. Here, we report an innovative way of opening a long-time investigation window of living matter by a nonbleaching phase intensity nanoscope: PINE. We accomplish phase-intensity separation to obtain phase differences between electric field components, such that nanoprobes within a diffraction limited region are distinguished from one another by an integrated phase-intensity multilayer thin film (polyvinyl alcohol/liquid crystal). We obtain distributional patterns of precisely localized nanoprobes to overcome a physical limit to resolve sub-10 nm cellular architectures, and achieve the first dynamic imaging of nanoscopic reorganization over 250 hours using nonbleaching PINE. Since PINE allows a long-time investigation window, we discover nanoscopic rearrangements synchronized with the emergence of group-level movements and shape changes at the macroscale according to a set of interaction rules. We believe that PINE and its application presented here provide a mechanistic understanding of emergent dynamics important in cellular and soft matter reorganization, self-organization, and pattern formation. △ Less

Gaussian Quantum Illumination via Monotone Metrics

Abstract: Quantum illumination is to discern the presence or absence of a low reflectivity target, where the error probability decays exponentially in the number of copies used. When the target reflectivity is small so that it is hard to distinguish target presence or absence, the exponential decay constant falls into a class of objects called monotone metrics. We evaluate monotone metrics restricted to Gau… ▽ More Quantum illumination is to discern the presence or absence of a low reflectivity target, where the error probability decays exponentially in the number of copies used. When the target reflectivity is small so that it is hard to distinguish target presence or absence, the exponential decay constant falls into a class of objects called monotone metrics. We evaluate monotone metrics restricted to Gaussian states in terms of first-order moments and covariance matrix. Under the assumption of a low reflectivity target, we explicitly derive analytic formulae for decay constant of an arbitrary Gaussian input state. Especially, in the limit of large background noise and low reflectivity, there is no need of symplectic diagonalization which usually complicates the computation of decay constants. First, we show that two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) states are the optimal probe among pure Gaussian states with fixed signal mean photon number. Second, as an alternative to preparing TMSV states with high mean photon number, we show that preparing a TMSV state with low mean photon number and displacing the signal mode is a more experimentally feasible setup without degrading the performance that much. Third, we show that it is of utmost importance to prepare an efficient idler memory to beat coherent states and provide analytic bounds on the idler memory transmittivity in terms of signal power, background noise, and idler memory noise. Finally, we identify the region of physically possible correlations between the signal and idler modes that can beat coherent states. △ Less

Study of the lineshape of $X(3872)$ using $B$ decays to $D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}K$

Abstract: We present a study of the $X(3872)$ lineshape in the decay $B \to X(3872)K\to D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}K$ using a data sample of $772\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The peak near the threshold in the $D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}$ invariant mass spectrum is fitted using a relativistic Breit-Wigner lineshape. We determine the mass and width parameters to be $m = 3873.71 ^{+0.56}_{-0.50} ({\rm stat}) \pm0.13 ({\rm syst}) ~{\rm MeV}/c^2$ and $Γ_0 = 5.2 ^{+2.2}_{-1.5} ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.4 ({\rm syst})~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The branching fraction is found to be ${\cal B} (B^+\to X(3872)K^+) \times {\cal{B}}(X(3872) \to D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}) = (0.97 ^{+0.21}_{-0.18} ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.10 ({\rm syst})) \times 10^{-4}$. The signal from $B^0$ decays is observed for the first time with $5.2σ$ significance, and the ratio of branching fractions between charged and neutral $B$ decays is measured to be ${\cal B}(B^0\to X(3872)K^0)/{\cal B}(B^+ \to X(3872)K^+) = 1.34^{+0.47}_{-0.40} ({\rm stat}) ^{+0.10}_{-0.12} ({\rm syst})$. The peak is also studied using a Flatté lineshape. We determine the lower limit on the $D\overline{D}{}^{*}$ coupling constant $g$ to be $0.075$ at 95% credibility in the parameter region where the ratio of $g$ to the mass difference from the $D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}$ threshold is equal to $-15.11~{\rm GeV}^{-1}$, as measured by LHCb. △ Less

Search for $B{}^0_s \rightarrow \ell^{\mp} τ^{\pm}$ with the Semi-leptonic Tagging Method at Belle

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the $Q^2$ distribution of $X(3915)$ produced by single-tag two-photon interactions. The decay mode used is $X(3915) \rightarrow J/ψω$. The covered $Q^2$ region is from 1.5 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ to 10.0 (GeV/$c$)$^2$. We observe $7.9\pm 3.1({\rm stat.})\pm 1.5({\rm syst.})$ events, where we expect $4.1\pm 0.7$ events based on the $Q^2=0$ result from the no-tag two-photon… ▽ More We report the first measurement of the $Q^2$ distribution of $X(3915)$ produced by single-tag two-photon interactions. Abstract: We report the results of the first search for the decay $B_s^0\rightarrowπ^0π^0$ using $121.4\ \rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected at the $Υ(5\rm S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We observe no signal and set a 90\% confidence level upper limit of $7.7\times 10^{-6}$ on the $B_s^0\rightarrowπ^0π^0$ decay branching fraction. Abstract: We present a measurement of the differential shapes of exclusive $B\to D^* \ell \barν_\ell$ ($B = B^-, \bar{B}^0 $ and $\ell = e, μ$) decays with hadronic tag-side reconstruction for the full Belle data set of $711\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity. We extract the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert (CLN) and Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed (BGL) form factor parameters and use an external input for the absolute branching fractions to determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element and find $|V_{cb}|_\mathrm{CLN} = (40.1\pm0.9)\times 10^{-3}$ and $|V_{cb}|_\mathrm{BGL} = (40.6\pm 0.9)\times 10^{-3}$ with the zero-recoil lattice QCD point $\mathcal{F}(1) = 0.906 \pm 0.013$. We also perform a study of the impact of preliminary beyond zero-recoil lattice QCD calculations on the $|V_{cb}|$ determinations. Additionally, we present the lepton flavor universality ratio $R_{eμ} = \mathcal{B}(B \to D^* e \barν_e) / \mathcal{B}(B \to D^* μ\barν_μ) = 0.990 \pm 0.021 \pm 0.023$, the electron and muon forward-backward asymmetry and their difference $ΔA_{FB}=0.022\pm0.026\pm 0.007$, and the electron and muon $D^*$ longitudinal polarization fraction and their difference $ΔF_L^{D^*} = 0.034 \pm 0.024 \pm 0.007$. Performance of an ultra-pure NaI(Tl) detector produced by an indigenously-developed purification method and crystal growth for the COSINE-200 experiment

Abstract: The COSINE-100 experiment has been operating with 106 kg of low-background NaI(Tl) detectors to test the results from the DAMA/LIBRA experiment, which claims to have observed dark matter. However, since the background of the NaI(Tl) crystals used in the COSINE-100 experiment is 2-3 times higher than that in the DAMA detectors, no conclusion regarding the claimed observation from the DAMA/LIBRA exp… ▽ More The COSINE-100 experiment has been operating with 106 kg of low-background NaI(Tl) detectors to test the results from the DAMA/LIBRA experiment, which claims to have observed dark matter. However, since the background of the NaI(Tl) crystals used in the COSINE-100 experiment is 2-3 times higher than that in the DAMA detectors, no conclusion regarding the claimed observation from the DAMA/LIBRA experiment could be reached. Therefore, we plan to upgrade the current COSINE-100 experiment to the next phase, COSINE-200, by using ultra-low background NaI(Tl) detectors. The basic principle was already proved with the commercially available Astro-grade NaI powder from Sigma-Aldrich company. However, we have developed a mass production process of ultra-pure NaI powder at the Center for Underground Physics (CUP) of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), Korea, using the direct purification of the raw NaI powder. We plan to produce more than 1,000 kg of ultra-pure powder for the COSINE200 experiment. With our crystal grower installed at CUP, we have successfully grown a low-background crystal using our purification technique for the NaI powder. We have assembled a low-background NaI(Tl) detector. Abstract: Charged-lepton-flavor-violation is predicted in several new physics scenarios. We update the analysis of $τ$ lepton decays into a light charged lepton ($\ell$ = $e^{\pm}$ or $μ^{\pm}$) and a vector meson ($V^0$ = $ρ^0$, $φ$, $ω$, $K^{\ast0}$, or $\overline{K}{}^{\ast0}$) using 980 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. No significant excess of such signal events… ▽ More Charged-lepton-flavor-violation is predicted in several new physics scenarios. The mass difference between $Λ_c(2625)^+$ and $Λ_c^+$ is measured to be… ▽ More Using the entire data sample of $980\,\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy collider, we report the measurement of the mass, width, and the relative branching ratios of the $Λ_c(2625)^+$ charmed baryon. The mass difference between $Λ_c(2625)^+$ and $Λ_c^+$ is measured to be $M(Λ_c(2625)^{+}) - M(Λ_c^{+}) = 341.518 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.049\ \mathrm{MeV}/\mathit{c}^2$. The upper limit on the width is measured to be $Γ(Λ_c(2625)^+) < 0.52\,\mathrm{MeV}/\textit{c}^2$ at 90\% credibility level. Based on a full Dalitz plot fit, branching ratios with respect to the mode $Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Λ_c^+ π^+ π^-$ are measured to be $\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Σ_c^{0} π^{+})} {\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Λ_c^+ π^{+} π^{-})} = (5.19 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.40) \%$ and $\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Σ_c^{++} π^{-})} {\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Λ_c^+ π^{+} π^{-})} = (5.13 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.32) \%$. The search uses electron-positron collisions at $10.58$ GeV center-of-mass energy with an integrated luminosity of $62.8$ fb$^{-1}$, produced by the SuperKEKB collider and collected with the Belle II detector. We search for an excess in the lepton-energy spectrum of the known $τ^-\to e^-\barν_e ν_τ$ and $τ^-\to μ^-\barν_μν_τ$ decays. We report 95\% confidence-level upper limits on the branching-fraction ratio ${\mathcal B}(τ^-\to e^- α) / {\mathcal B}(τ^- \to e^- \barν_e ν_τ)$ in the range $(1.1-9.7) \times 10^{-3}$ and on ${\mathcal B}(τ^-\to μ^- α) / {\mathcal B}(τ^- \to μ^- \barν_μν_τ)$ in the range $(0.7-12.2) \times 10^{-3}$ for $α$ masses between 0 and 1.6 GeV/c$^2$. Abstract: The $L_μ-L_τ$ extension of the standard model predicts the existence of a lepton-flavor-universality-violating $Z^{\prime}$ boson that couples only to the heavier lepton families. We search for such a $Z^\prime$ through its invisible decay in the process $e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- Z^{\prime}$. First Observation of $Λπ^+$ and $Λπ^-$ Signals near the $\bar{K}N (I=1)$ Mass Threshold in $Λ_c^+\rightarrowΛπ^+π^+π^-$ Decay

Abstract: Using the data sample of 980 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we present the results of an investigation of the $Λπ^+$ and $Λπ^-$ invariant mass distributions looking for substructure in the decay $Λ_c^+\rightarrowΛπ^+π^+π^-$. When interpreted as resonances, we find for the $Λπ^+$ ($Λπ^-$) combination a mass of $1434.3 \pm 0.6 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.9(\mathrm{syst})$ MeV/$c^2$ [$1438.5 \pm 0.9 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 2.5(\mathrm{syst})$ MeV/$c^2$], an intrinsic width of $11.5 \pm 2.8 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 5.3(\mathrm{syst})$ MeV/$c^2$ [$33.0 \pm 7.5 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 23.6(\mathrm{syst})$ MeV/$c^2$] with a significance of 7.5$σ$ (6.2$σ$). As these two signals are very close to the $\bar{K}N$ threshold, we also investigate the possibility of a $\bar{K}N$ cusp, and find that \ we cannot discriminate between these two interpretations due to the limited size of the data sample. △ Less

High-energy betatron source driven by a 4-PW laser with applications to non-destructive imaging

Abstract: Petawatt-class lasers can produce multi-GeV electron beams through laser wakefield electron acceleration. As a by-product, the accelerated electron beams can generate broad synchrotron-like radiation known as betatron radiation. In the present work, we measure the properties of the radiation produced from 2 GeV, 215 pC electron beams, which shows a broad radiation spectrum with a critical energy o… ▽ More Petawatt-class lasers can produce multi-GeV electron beams through laser wakefield electron acceleration. As a by-product, the accelerated electron beams can generate broad synchrotron-like radiation known as betatron radiation. In the present work, we measure the properties of the radiation produced from 2 GeV, 215 pC electron beams, which shows a broad radiation spectrum with a critical energy of 515 keV, extending up to MeV photon energies and 10 mrad divergence. Due to its high energy and flux, such radiation is an ideal candidate for gamma-ray radiography of dense objects. We employed a compact betatron radiation setup operated at relatively high-repetition rates (0.1 Hz) and used it to scan cm-sized objects: a DRAM circuit, BNC and SMA connectors, a padlock and a gas jet nozzle. GEANT4 simulations were carried out to reproduce the radiograph of the gas jet. The setup and the radiation source can reveal the interior structure of the objects at the sub-mm level, proving that it can further be applied to diagnose cracks or holes in various components. The radiation source presented here is a valuable tool for non-destructive inspection and for applications in high-energy-density physics such as nuclear fusion. △ Less
