We examine the proposal by Grabowska and Kaplan (GK) to use the infinite gradient flow in the domain-wall formulation of chiral lattice gauge theories. We consider the case of Abelian theories in detail, for which Lüscher's exact gauge-invariant formulation is known, and we relate GK's formulation to Lüscher's one. The gradient flow can be formulated for the admissible U(1) link fields so that it preserves their topological charges. GK's effective action turns out to be equal to the sum of Lüscher's gauge-invariant effective actions for the target Weyl fermions and the mirror "fluffy" fermions, plus the so-called measureterm integrated along the infinite gradient flow. The measure-term current is originally a local(analytic) and gauge-invariant functional of the admissible link field, given as a solution to the local cohomology problem. However, with the infinite gradient flow, it gives rise to non-local(non-analytic) vertex functions which are not suppressed exponentially at large distance. The "fluffy" fermions remain as a source of non-local contribution, which couple yet to the Wilson-line and magnetic-flux degrees of freedom of the dynamical link field.

We consider the lattice formulation of SO(10) chiral gauge theory with left-handed Weyl fermions in the sixteen dimensional spinor representation ($\underline{16}$) within the framework of the Overlap fermion/the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. We define a manifestly gauge-invariant path-integral measure for the left-handed Weyl field using all the components of the Dirac field, but the right-handed part of which is just saturated completely by inserting a suitable product of the SO(10)-invariant 't Hooft vertices in terms of the right-handed field. The definition of the measure applies to all possible topological sectors. The measure possesses all required transformation properties under lattice symmetries and the induced effective action is CP invariant. The global U(1) symmetry of the left-handed field is anomalous due to the non-trivial transformation of the measure, while that of the right-handed field is explicitly broken by the 't Hooft vertices. There remains the issue of locality in the gauge-field dependence of the Weyl fermion measure, but the question can be addressed in the weak gauge-coupling expansion at least using Monte Carlo methods without encountering the sign problem. We also discuss the relations of our formulation to other approaches/proposals to decouple the species-doubling/mirror degrees of freedom. Those include Eichten-Preskill model, Ginsparg-Wilson Mirror-fermion model, Domain wall fermion model with the boundary Eichten-Preskill term, 4D Topological Insulator/Superconductor with gapped boundary phase, and the recent studies on the PMS phase/"Mass without symmetry breaking". We clarify the similarity and the difference in technical detail and show that our proposal is a well-defined testing ground for that basic question.

In the mirror fermion approach with Ginsparg-Wilson fermions, it has been argued that the mirror fermions do not decouple: in the 345 model with Dirac- and Majorana-Yukawa couplings to XY-spin field, the two-point vertex function of the (external) gauge field in the mirror sector shows a singular non-local behavior in the PMS phase. We re-examine why the attempt seems a "Mission: Impossible" in the 345 model. We point out that the effective operators to break the fermion number symmetries ('t Hooft operators plus others) in the mirror sector do not have sufficiently strong couplings even in the limit of large Majorana-Yukawa couplings. We observe also that the type of Majorana mass term considered there is singular in the large limit due to the nature of the chiral projection of the Ginsparg-Wilson fermions, but a slight modification without such singularity is allowed by virtue of the very nature. We then consider a simpler four-flavor axial gauge model, the 1$^4$(-1)$^4$ model, in which the U(1)$_A$ gauge and Spin(6)(SU(4)) global symmetries prohibit the bilinear terms, but allow the quartic terms to break all the other continuous mirror-fermion symmetries. In the strong-coupling limit of the quartic operators, the model is well-behaved and simplified. Through Monte-Carlo simulations in the weak gauge coupling limit, we show a numerical evidence that the two-point vertex function of the gauge field in the mirror sector shows a regular local behavior, and we still argue that all you need is killing the continuous mirror-fermion symmetries with would-be gauge anomalies non-matched. Finally, by gauging a U(1) subgroup of the U(1)$_A$$\times$ Spin(6)(SU(4)) of the previous model, we formulate the $2 1 (-1)^3$ chiral gauge model and argue that the induced fermion measure term satisfies the required locality property and provides a solution to the reconstruction theorem.

Statistical sampling with the complex Langevin (CL) equation is applied to (0+1)-dimensional Thirring model, and its uniform-field variant, at finite fermion chemical potential $μ$. The CL simulation reproduces a crossover behavior which is similar to but actually deviating from the exact solution in the transition region, where we confirm that the CL simulation becomes susceptible to the drift singularities, i.e., zeros of the fermion determinant. In order to simulate the transition region with the CL method correctly, we examine two approaches, a reweighting method and a model deformation, in both of which a single thimble with an attractive fixed point practically covers the integration domain and the CL sampling avoids the determinant zeros. It turns out that these methods can reproduce the correct crossover behavior of the original model with using reference ensembles in the complexified space. However, they need evaluation of the reweighting factor, which scales with the system size exponentially. We discuss feasibility of applying these methods to the Thirring model and to more realistic theories.

We firstly locate the critical points (saddle points) of the gradient flows within the subspace of time-independent (complex) link field, and study the thiemble structure and the Stokes phenomenon to identify the thimbles which contribute to the path-integral. Then, we perform HMC simulations on the single dominant thimble and compare the results to the exact solution. The numerical results are in agreement with the exact ones in small and large chemical potential regions, while they show some deviation in the crossover region in the chemical potential. We also comment on the necessity of the contributions from multiple thimbles in the crossover region.

We consider the one-dimensional massive Thirring model formulated on the lattice with staggered fermions and an auxiliary compact vector (link) field, which is exactly solvable and shows a phase transition with increasing the chemical potential of fermion number: the crossover at a finite temperature and the first order transition at zero temperature. We complexify its path-integration on Lefschetz thimbles and examine its phase transition by hybrid Monte Carlo simulations on the single dominant thimble. We observe a discrepancy between the numerical and exact results in the crossover region for small inverse coupling $β$ and/or large lattice size $L$, while they are in good agreement at the lower and higher density regions. We also observe that the discrepancy persists in the continuum limit kee** the temperature finite and it becomes more significant toward the low-temperature limit. This numerical result is consistent with our analytical study of the model's thimble structure. And these results imply that the contributions of subdominant thimbles should be summed up in order to reproduce the first order transition in the low-temperature limit.

We investigate Lefschetz thimble structure of the complexified path-integration in the one-dimensional lattice massive Thirring model with finite chemical potential. The lattice model is formulated with staggered fermions and a compact auxiliary vector boson (a link field), and the whole set of the critical points (the complex saddle points) are sorted out, where each critical point turns out to be in a one-to-one correspondence with a singular point of the effective action (or a zero point of the fermion determinant). For a subset of critical point solutions in the uniform-field subspace, we examine the upward and downward cycles and the Stokes phenomenon with varying the chemical potential, and we identify the intersection numbers to determine the thimbles contributing to the path-integration of the partition function. We show that the original integration path becomes equivalent to a single Lefschetz thimble at small and large chemical potentials, while in the crossover region multi thimbles must contribute to the path integration. Finally, reducing the model to a uniform field space, we study the relative importance of multiple thimble contributions and their behavior toward continuum and low-temperature limits quantitatively, and see how the rapid crossover behavior is recovered by adding the multi thimble contributions at low temperatures. Those findings will be useful for performing Monte-Carlo simulations on the Lefschetz thimbles.

We consider a hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm which is applicable to lattice theories defined on Lefschetz thimbles. In the algorithm, any point (field configuration) on a thimble is parametrized uniquely by the flow-direction and the flow-time defined at a certain asymptotic region close to the critical point, and it is generated by solving the gradient flow equation downward. The associated complete set of tangent vectors is also generated in the same manner. Molecular dynamics is then formulated as a constrained dynamical system, where the equations of motion with Lagrange multipliers are solved by the second-order constraint-preserving symmetric integrator. The algorithm is tested in the lambda phi^4 model at finite density, by choosing the thimbles associated with the classical vacua for subcritical and supercritical values of chemical potential. For the lattice size L=4, we find that the residual sign factors average to not less than 0.99 and are safely included by reweighting and that the results of the number density are consistent with those obtained by the complex Langevin simulations.

By using overlap Majorana fermions, the ${\cal N}=1$ chiral multiple can be formulated so that the supersymmetry is manifest and the vacuum energy is cancelled in the free limit, thanks to the bilinear nature of the free action. It is pointed out, however, that in this formulation the reflection positivity is violated in the bosonic part of the action, although it is satisfied in the fermionic part. It is found that the positivity of the spectral density of the bosonic two-point correlation function is ensured only for the spacial momenta $a | p_k | \lesssim 1.72$ $(k=1,2,3)$. It is then argued that in formulating ${\cal N}=1$ Wess-Zumino model with the overlap Majorana fermion, one may adopt a simpler nearest-neighbor bosonic action, discarding the free limit manifest supersymmetry. The model still preserves the would-be U(1)$_R$ symmetry and satisfies the reflection positivity.

We study this conjecture by a lattice simulation, extracting the weight from the finite volume scaling of the susceptibility of the scalar component in Phi. We adopt a lattice model with the overlap fermion, which possesses a Nicolai map and a discrete R-symmetry. We set a(lambda)=0.3 and generate the scalar field configurations by solving the Nicolai map on L times L lattices in the range L=18 - 32. To solve the map, we use the Newton-Raphson algorithm with various initial configurations. The result is 1-h-bar{h}=0.660 \pm0.011, which is consistent with the conjecture within the statistical error, while a systematic error is estimated as less than 0.5 %.

In models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking due to strongly coupled fourth-family quarks and leptons, their low-energy effective descriptions may involve multiple composite Higgs fields, leading to a possibility that the electroweak phase transition at finite temperature is first order due to the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. We examine the behavior of the electroweak phase transition based on the effective renormalizable Yukawa theory which consists of the fourth-family quarks and two SU(2)-doublet Higgs fields corresponding to the bilinear operators of the fourth-family quarks with/without imposing the compositeness condition. The strength of the first-order phase transition is estimated by using the finite-temperature effective potential at one-loop with the ring-improvement. In the Yukawa theory without the compositeness condition, it is found that there is a parameter region where the first-order phase transition is strong enough for the electroweak baryogenesis with the experimentally acceptable Higgs boson and fourth-family quark masses. On the other hand, when the compositeness condition is imposed, the phase transition turns out to be weakly first order, or possibly second order, although the result is rather sensitive to the details of the compositeness condition. Combining with the result of the Yukawa theory without the compositeness condition, it is argued that with the fourth-family quark masses in the range of 330-480 GeV, corresponding to the compositeness scale in the range of 1.0-2.3 TeV, the four-fermion interaction among the fourth-family quarks does not lead to the strongly first-order electroweak phase transition.

In infinite volume, it provides a gauge-invariant regularization of the electroweak theory to all orders of perturbation theory. First we formulate the reconstruction theorem which asserts that if there exists a set of local currents satisfying cetain properties, it is possible to reconstruct the fermion measure which depends smoothly on the gauge fields and fulfills the fundamental requirements such as locality, gauge-invariance and lattice symmetries. This type of chiral symmetry with a large Nf may appear in the Higgs sector if one considers models such as walking technicolor theories. We examine the first-order restoration of the chiral symmetry from the point of view of the electroweak phase transition. The strength of the transition is estimated in SU(2) x U(1) gauged linear sigma model by means of the finite temperature effective potential at one-loop with the ring improvement. Even if the mass of the neutral scalar boson corresponding to the Higgs boson is larger than 114 GeV, the first-order transition can be strong enough for the electroweak baryogenesis, as long as the extra massive scalar bosons (required for the linear realization) are kept heavier than the neutral scalar boson. Explicit symmetry breaking terms reduce the strength of the first-order transition, but the transition can remain strongly first-order even when the masses of pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons become as large as the current lower bound of direct search experiments.

In continuum field theory, it has been discussed that chiral gauge theories with Weyl fermions in anomalous gauge representations (anomalous gauge theories) can consistently be quantized, provided that some of gauge bosons are permitted to acquire mass. Such theories in four dimensions are inevitablly non-renormalizable and must be regarded as a low-energy effective theory with a finite ultraviolet (UV) cutoff. In this paper, we present a lattice framework which enables one to study such theories in a non-perturbative level. By introducing bare mass terms of gauge bosons that impose ``smoothness'' on the link field, we explicitly construct a consistent fermion integration measure in a lattice formulation based on the Ginsparg-Wilson (GW) relation. This framework may be used to determine in a non-perturbative level an upper bound on the UV cutoff in low-energy effective theories with anomalous fermion content. By further introducing the Stückelberg or Wess-Zumino (WZ) scalar field, this framework provides also a lattice definition of a non-linear sigma model with the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term.

We discuss a possibility that the Neutron Electric Dipole Moment (NEDM) can be calculated in lattice QCD simulations in the presence of the CP violating $θ$ term. In this paper we measure the energy difference between spin-up and spin-down states of the neutron in the presence of an uniform and static external electric field. We first test this method in quenched QCD with the RG improved gauge action on a $16^3\times 32$ lattice at $a^{-1}\simeq$ 2 GeV, employing two different lattice fermion formulations, the domain-wall fermion and the clover fermion for quarks, at relatively heavy quark mass $(m_{PS}/m_V \simeq 0.85)$. We obtain non-zero values of NEDM from calculations with both fermion formulations. We next consider some systematic uncertainties of our method for NEDM, using $24^3\times 32$ lattice at the same lattice spacing only with the clover fermion. We finally investigate the quark mass dependence of NEDM and observe a non-vanishing behavior of NEDM toward the chiral limit. We interpret this behavior as a manifestation of the pathology in the quenched approximation.

We carry out a feasibility study toward a lattice QCD calculation of the neutron electric dipole moment (NEDM) in the presence of the $θ$ term using two different approaches. In the first method, we calculate the CP-odd electromagnetic form factor $F_3$, which becomes the NEDM in the zero momentum transfer limit. At the first order in $θ$, we derive a formula connecting the lattice three-point function to the CP-odd electromagnetic form factor. In the second method we directly extract the NEDM from the energy difference between spin-up and spin-down neutron states in the presence of a constant electric field, without expanding a small but non-zero $θ$. We test both approaches numerically, employing the domain-wall quark action with the RG improved gauge action in quenched QCD at $a^{-1}\simeq 2$ GeV on a $16^3\times 32\times 16$ lattice, and further applying the second method to the clover quark action at a similar lattice spacing and nucleon mass. We obtain good signals from both approaches. In particular the second method works well with both fermion formulations.

We carry out a feasibility study for the lattice QCD calculation of the neutron electric dipole moment (NEDM) in the presence of the $θ$ term. We develop the strategy to obtain the nucleon EDM from the CP-odd electromagnetic form factor $F_3$ at small $θ$, in which NEDM is given by $\lim_{q^2\to 0}θF_3(q^2)/(2m_N)$ where $q$ is the momentum transfer and $m_N$ is the nucleon mass. We first derive a formula which relates $F_3$, a matrix element of the electromagnetic current between nucleon states, with vacuum expectation values of nucleons and/or the current. In the expansion of $θ$, the parity-odd part of the nucleon-current-nucleon three-point function contains contributions not only from the parity-odd form factors but also from the parity-even form factors multiplied by the parity-odd part of the nucleon two-point function, and therefore the latter contribution must be subtracted to extract $F_3$. We then perform an explicit lattice calculation employing the domain-wall quark action with the RG improved gauge action in quenched QCD at $a^{-1}\simeq 2$ GeV on a $16^3\times 32\times 16$ lattice. At the quark mass $m_f a =0.03$, corresponding to $m_π/m_ρ\simeq 0.63$, we accumulate 730 configurations, which allow us to extract the parity-odd part in both two- and three-point functions. Employing two different Dirac $γ$ matrix projections, we show that a consistent value for $F_3$ cannot be obtained without the subtraction described above. We obtain $F_3(q^2\simeq 0.58 \textrm{GeV}^2)/(2m_N) =$ $-$0.024(5) $e\cdot$fm for the neutron and $F_3(q^2\simeq 0.58 \textrm{GeV}^2)/(2m_N) =$ 0.021(6) $e\cdot$fm for the proton.

A lattice Wess-Zumino model is formulated on the basis of Ginsparg-Wilson fermions. In perturbation theory, our formulation is equivalent to the formulation by Fujikawa and Ishibashi and by Fujikawa. Our formulation is, however, free from a singular nature of the latter formulation due to an additional auxiliary chiral supermultiplet on a lattice. The model posssesses an exact $\U(1)_R$ symmetry as a supersymmetric counterpart of the Lüscher lattice chiral $\U(1)$ symmetry. A restration of the supersymmetric Ward-Takahashi identity in the continuum limit is analyzed in renormalized perturbation theory. In the one-loop level, a supersymmetric continuum limit is ensured by suitably adjusting a coefficient of a single local term $\tilde F^*\tilde F$. The non-renormalization theorem holds to this order of perturbation theory. In higher orders, on the other hand, coefficents of local terms with dimension $\leq4$ that are consistent with the $\U(1)_R$ symmetry have to be adjusted for a supersymmetric continuum limit. The origin of this complexicity in higher-order loops is clarified on the basis of the Reisz power counting theorem. Therefore, from a view point of supersymmetry, the present formulation is not quite better than a lattice Wess-Zumino model formulated by using Wilson fermions, although a number of coefficients which require adjustment is much less due to the exact $\U(1)_R$ symmetry. We also comment on an exact non-linear fermionic symmetry which corresponds to the one studied by Bonini and Feo; an existence of this exact symmetry itself does not imply a restoration of supersymmetry in the continuum limit without any adjustment of parameters.

We consider a numerical method to solve the local cohomology problem related to the gauge anomaly cancellation in U(1) chiral gauge theories. In the cohomological analysis of the chiral anomaly, it is required to carry out the differentiation and the integration of the anomaly with respect to the continuous parameter for the interpolation of the admissible gauge fields. In our numerical approach, the differentiation is evaluated explicitly through the rational approximation of the overlap Dirac operator with Zolotarev optimization. The integration is performed with a Gaussian Quadrature formula, which turns out to show rather good convergence. The Poincare lemma is reformulated for the finite lattice and is implemented numerically. We compute the current associated with the cohomologically trivial part of the chiral anomaly in two-dimensions and check its locality properties.

The axial anomaly arising from the fermion sector of $\U(N)$ or $\SU(N)$ reduced model is studied under a certain restriction of gauge field configurations (the ``$\U(1)$ embedding'' with $N=L^d$). We use the overlap-Dirac operator and consider how the anomaly changes as a function of a gauge-group representation of the fermion. A simple argument shows that the anomaly vanishes for an irreducible representation expressed by a Young tableau whose number of boxes is a multiple of $L^2$ (such as the adjoint representation) and for a tensor-product of them. We also evaluate the anomaly for general gauge-group representations in the large $N$ limit. The large $N$ limit exhibits expected algebraic properties as the axial anomaly. Nevertheless, when the gauge group is $\SU(N)$, it does not have a structure such as the trace of a product of traceless gauge-group generators which is expected from the corresponding gauge field theory.

We consider fermions belonging to the fundamental representation of the gauge group U(N) or SU(N). For vector-like theories, we determine a general form of the axial anomaly or the topological charge within a framework of a U(1) embedding. For chiral gauge theories with the gauge group U(N), a remnant of gauge anomaly emerges as an obstruction to a smooth fermion integration measure. The pure gauge action of gauge-field configurations which cause these non-trivial phenomena always diverges in the 't Hooft $N\to\infty$ limit when d>2.

We then try to incorporate U(1) gauge field, following Lüscher's reconstruction theorem. The global integrability condition is proved for ``gauge loops'' in the space of the U(1) gauge fields with arbitrary SU(2) gauge field fixed in the background. For ``non-gauge loops'', however, the proof is given so far only for the classical SU(2) instanton backgrounds.

The vacuum overlap formalism is extended to describe the supersymmetric multiplet of a Weyl fermion, a complex scalar boson and an auxiliary field in the case without interaction, based on the fact that supersymmetry can be maintained upto quadratic terms by introducing bosonic species doublers. We also obtain a local action which describes the chiral multiplet and discuss its symmetry structure. It is shown that, besides the manifest supersymmetry, the action possesses a chiral symmetry of the type given by Lüscher and analogous bosonic symmetries which may be regarded as independent infinitesimal rotations of complex phases of the scalar and the auxiliary fields. This implies that the $U(1) \times U(1)_R$ symmetry of the chiral multiplet can be exact on the lattice.

Abstract:
A certain truncation of the overlap (domain wall fermions) contains $k$ flavors of Wilson-Dirac fermions. We show that for sufficiently weak lattice gauge fields the effective mass of the lightest Dirac particle is exponentially suppressed in $k$. This suppression is seen to disappear when lattice topology is non-trivial. We check explicitly that the suppression holds to one loop in perturbation…

We show that for sufficiently weak lattice gauge fields the effective mass of the lightest Dirac particle is exponentially suppressed in $k$. This suppression is seen to disappear when lattice topology is non-trivial. We check explicitly that the suppression holds to one loop in perturbation theory. We also provide a new expression for the free fermion propagator with an arbitrary additional mass term.

Gauge Freedom in Chiral Gauge Theory with Vacuum Overlap
Authors:

Abstract:
Dynamical nature of the gauge degrees of freedom and its effect to fermion spectrum are studied at $β=\infty$ for two- and four-dimensional nonabelian chiral gauge theories in the vacuum overlap formalism. It is argued that the disordered gauge degrees of freedom does not contradict to the chiral spectrum of lattice fermion.

Instanton induced fermion number violation is essential for 't Hooft anomaly consistency. The associated 't Hooft vertex can be analytically computed in the continuum, including finite size corrections. This number is reproduced in a dynamical simulation employing the overlap.

In odd dimensions the lattice overlap formalism is simpler than in even dimensions. Dynamical nature of the gauge degree of freedom and its effect to fermion spectrum are studied for four-dimensional nonabelian chiral gauge theory in the vacuum overlap formulation. The covariant gauge fixing term and the Faddeev-Popov determinant are introduced by hand as a weight for the gauge average. At $β=\infty$, as noticed by Hata some time ago, the model is renormalizable at one-loop and the gauge fixing term turns into an asymptotically free self-coupling of the gauge freedom, even in the presence of the gauge symmetry breaking of the complex phase of chiral determinant. The severe infrared divergence occurs in the perturbation expansion and it prevents local order parameters from emerging. The Foerster-Nielsen-Ninomiya mechanism works in this perturbative framework: the small explicit gauge symmetry breaking term does not affect the above infrared structure. Based on these dynamical features, which is quite similar to the two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model, we assume that the global gauge symmetry does not break spontaneously and the gauge freedom acquires mass dynamically. The asymptotic freedom allows us to tame the gauge fluctuation by approaching the critical point of the gauge freedom without spoiling its disordered nature. Then it is argued that the disordered gauge freedom does not necessarily cause the massless chiral state in the (waveguide) boundary correlation function and that the entire fermion spectrum can be chiral.
