We report the complex dielectric function of the quasi-one-dimensional chalcogenide Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, which exhibits a structural phase transition that has been attributed to exciton condensation below $T_c = 326$ K, and of the isostructural Ta$_2$NiS$_5$ which does not exhibit such a transition. Using spectroscopic ellipsometry, we have detected exciton doublets with pronounced Fano lineshapes in both the compounds. The exciton Fano resonances in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ display an order of magnitude higher intensity than those in Ta$_2$NiS$_5$. In conjunction with prior theoretical work by E. Rashba, we attribute this observation to the giant oscillator strength of spatially extended exciton-phonon bound states in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. The formation of exciton-phonon complexes in Ta$_2$NiS$_5$ and Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ is confirmed by the pronounced temperature dependence of sharp interband transitions in the optical spectra, whose peak energies and widths scale with the thermal population of optical phonon modes. The description of the optically excited states in terms of strongly overlap** exciton complexes is in good agreement with the hypothesis of an EI ground state.

We investigate the interplay between the magnetic and the superconducting degrees of freedom in unconventional multi-band superconductors such as iron pnictides. For this purpose a dynamical mode-mode coupling theory is developed based on the coupled Bethe-Salpeter equations. In order to investigate the region of the phase diagram not too far from the tetracritical point where the magnetic spin density wave, (SDW) and superconducting (SC) transition temperatures coincide, we also construct a Ginzburg - Landau functional including both SC and SDW fluctuations in a critical region above the transition temperatures. The fluctuation corrections tend to suppress the magnetic transition, but in the superconducting channel the intraband and interband contribution of the fluctuations nearly compensate each other.

We investigate electron shuttling in three-terminal nanoelectromechanocal device built on a movable metallic rod oscillating between two drains. The device shows a double-well shaped electromechanical potential tunable by a source-drain bias voltage. Four stationary regimes controllable by the bias are found for this device: (i) single stable fixed point, (ii) two stable fixed points, (iii) two limiting cycles, and (iv) single limiting cycle. In the presence of perpendicular magnetic field the Lorentz force makes possible switching from one electromechanical state to another. The mechanism of tunable transitions between various stable regimes based on the interplay between voltage controlled electromechanical instability and magnetically controlled switching is suggested. The switching phenomenon is implemented for achieving both a reliable \emph{active} current switch and sensoring of small variations of magnetic field.

A single-electron tunneling (SET) device with a nanoscale central island that can move with respect to the bulk source- and drain electrodes allows for a nanoelectromechanical (NEM) coupling between the electrical current through the device and mechanical vibrations of the island. Although an electromechanical "shuttle" instability and the associated phenomenon of single-electron shuttling were predicted more than 15 years ago, both theoretical and experimental studies of NEM-SET structures are still carried out. New functionalities based on quantum coherence, Coulomb correlations and coherent electron-spin dynamics are of particular current interest. In this article we present a short review of recent activities in this area.

Specifying to a system of ultra cold $^{22}$Na Fermi gas and a trapped $^{197}$Au impurity, the mechanism of exchange interaction between the Na and Au atoms is elucidated and the exchange constant is found to be antiferromagnetic. The corresponding exchange Hamiltonian is derived, and the Kondo temperature is estimated at the order of $ 1 μ$K.
Within a weak-coupling renormalization group scheme, it is shown that the coupling renormalizes to the non-Fermi liquid fixed point.

We investigate instability and dynamical properties of nanoelectromechanical systems represented by a single-electron device containing movable quantum dot attached to a vibrating cantilever via asymmetric tunnel contact. The Kondo resonance in electron tunneling between source and shuttle facilitates self-sustained oscillations originated from strong coupling of mechanical and electronic/spin degrees of freedom. We analyze stability diagram for two-channel Kondo shuttling regime due to limitations given by the electromotive force acting on a moving shuttle and find that the saturation amplitude of oscillation is associated with the retardation effect of Kondo-cloud. The results shed light on possible ways of experimental realization of dynamical probe for the Kondo-cloud by using high tunability of mechanical dissipation as well as supersensitive detection of mechanical displacement.

We show that the generic Hamiltonians being non-linear in terms of the SU(2) group generators become linear in the SU(3) basis. If the diabatic states of the SU(3) Landau - Zener Hamiltonian form a triangle, the interference between two paths results in formation of "beats" and "steps" pattern in the time-dependent transition probability. The characteristic time scales describing the "beats" and "steps" depend on a dwell time through the triangle. These scales are related to the geometric size of the interferometer. We formulate the SU(3) Landau - Zener problem in terms of Bloch dynamics of a unit vector and find a solution of eight-dimensional Bloch equations in the limit of a non-adiabatic transition. Possible experiments in triangular and linearly arranged triple quantum dots where Landau - Zener interferometry can be used for finding manifestations of SU(3) symmetry are discussed.

As-vacancies (V_As) in La-1111-systems, which are nominally non-magnetic defects, are shown to create in their vicinity by symmetry ferromagnetically oriented local magnetic moments due to the strong, covalent bonds with neighboring Fe atoms that they break. From microscopic theory in terms of an appropriately modified Anderson-Wolff model, we find that the moment formation results in a substantially enhanced paramagnetic susceptibility in both the normal and superconducting (SC) state. Despite the V_As act as magnetic scatterers, they do not deteriorate SC properties which can even be improved by V_As by suppressing a competing or coexisting commensurate spin density wave or its remnant fluctuations. Due to the induced local magnetic moments an s_++-scenario in related systems is unlikely.

A scenario for the formation of symmetry protected non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) Kondo effect (KE) with spin variable enumerating Kondo channels is suggested and worked out. In doubly occupied symmetric triple quantum dot within parallel geometry, the NFL low-energy regime arises provided the device possesses both source-drain and left-right parity. Kondo screening follows a multistage renormalization group mechanism: reduction of the energy scale is accompanied by the change of the relevant symmetry group from SO(8) to SO(5). At low energy, three phases compete: 1) under-screening spin triplet (conventional) KE; 2) spin singlet potential scattering; 3) NFL phase where the roles of spin and orbital degrees of freedom are swapped.

We show that the resonance Kondo tunneling of electrons amplify exponentially the strength of nanoelectromechanical (NEM) coupling in such device and makes the latter to be insensitive to mesoscopic fluctuations of electronic levels in a nano-dot. It is also shown that the study of Kondo-NEM phenomenon provides an additional (as compared with a standard conductance measurements in a non-mechanical device) information on retardation effects in formation of many-particle cloud accompanied the Kondo tunneling. A possibility for superhigh tunability of mechanical dissipation as well as supersensitive detection of mechanical displacement is demonstrated.

The concept of dynamical symmetries is used for formulation of the renormalization group approach to the Kondo effect in the Anderson model with repulsive and attractive interaction $U$. It is shown that the generic local symmetry of the Anderson Hamiltonian is determined by the SU(4) Lie group. The Anderson Hamiltonian is rewritten in terms of the Gell-Mann matrices of the 4-th rank, which form the set of group generators and the basis for construction of irreducible vector operators describing the excitation spectra in the charge and spin sectors. The multistage Kondo sceening is described in terms of the local SU(4) dynamical symmetry. It is shown that the similarity between the conventional Kondo cotunneling effect for spin 1/2 in the positive $U$ model and the Kondo resonance for pair tunneling in the negative $U$ model is a direct manifestation of implicit SU(4) symmetry of the Anderson/Kondo model.

We report magnetization measurements of As-deficient LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_1-delta (delta about 0.06) samples with improved superconducting properties as compared with As-stoichiometric optimally doped La-1111 samples. In this As-deficient system with almost homogeneously distributed As-vacancies (AV), as suggested by the (75)As-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements,we observe a strong enhancement of the spin-susceptibility by a factor of 3-7. This observation is attributed to the presence of an electronically localized state around each AV, carrying a magnetic moment of about 3.2 mu_Bohr per AV or 0.8 mu_Bohr/Fe atom. From theoretical considerations we find that the formation of a local moment on neighboring iron sites of an AV sets in when the local Coulomb interaction exceeds a critical value of about 1.0 eV in the dilute limit. Its estimated value amounts to ~ 2.5 eV and implies an upper bound of ~ 2 eV for the Coulomb repulsion at Fe sites beyond the first neighbor-shell of an AV. Electronic correlations are thus moderate/weak in doped La-1111. The strongly enhanced spin susceptibility is responsible for the Pauli limiting behavior of the superconductivity that we observe in As-deficient LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_1-delta. In contrast, no Pauli limiting behavior is found for the optimally doped, As-stoichiometric LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs superconductor in accord with its low spin susceptibility.

The dynamical problem is solved for the ensemble of two-level systems (TLS) with fluctuating well depths having the discrete Z_2 symmetry. The spin and charge excitation spectra are found in the limits of small and large longitudinal hop** $t_\|$ compared to the on-rung hop** rate $t_\perp$ and exchange coupling $I_\perp$. At small $t_\|$ the system with ferromagnetic on-rung exchange demonstrates instability against dimerization. Coherent propagation of charge transfer excitons is possible in this limit. At large $t_\|$ CL behaves like two-orbital Hubbard chain, but the gap opens in the charge excitation spectrum thus reducing the symmetry from SU(4) to SU(2). The spin excitations are always gapless and their dispersion changes from quadratic magnon-like for ferromagnetic on-rung exchange to linear spinon-like for antiferromagnetic on-rung exchange in weak longitudinal hop** limit.

Recent advancement in fabrication technologies enable the construction of nano-objects with rather rich internal structures such as double or triple quantum dots, which can then be regarded as artificial molecules. The main new ingredient in the study of the Kondo effect in such artificial (and also in natural) molecules is the internal symmetry of the nano-object, which proves to play a crucial role in the construction of the effective exchange Hamiltonian. This internal symmetry combines continuous spin symmetry SU(2) and discrete point symmetry (such as mirror reflections for double dots or discrete $C_{3v}$ rotation for equilateral triangular dots. When these artificial molecules are attached to metallic leads, the set of dot operators appearing in the effective exchange Hamiltonian generate a group which is refereed to as the dynamical symmetry group of the system dot-leads [mostly SO(n) or SU(n)], and the pertinent group parameters (such as the value of $n$) can be controlled by experiment. In this short review we clarify and expand these concepts and discuss some specific examples. In particular we concentrate on the difference between the chain geometry and the ring geometry. When a perpendicular magnetic field is applied in the ring geometry, its gauge symmetry U(1) is involved in the interplay with the spin and orbital dynamics of the dot.

Magnetic properties of polycrystalline Sm0.1Ca0.84Sr0.06MnO3 in pristine and metastable states have been investigated in wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. It was found that below Curie temperature TC = 105 K the pristine state exhibits phase separation comprising ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. The metastable states with reduced magnetization were obtained by successive number of quick coolings of the sample placed in container with kerosene-oil mixture. By an increasing number of quick coolings (> 6) the long time relaxation appeared at 10 K and the magnetization reversed its sign and became strongly negative in wide temperature range, even under an applied magnetic field of 15 kOe. The observed field and temperature dependences of the magnetization in this state are reversed in comparison with the ordinary ferromagnetic ones. Above TC, the observed diamagnetic susceptibility of the reversed magnetization state at T = 120 K is ~ - 0.9 x 10-4 emu g-1 Oe-1. Only after some storage time at room temperature, the abnormal magnetic state is erasable. It is suggested that the negative magnetization observed results from a specific coupling of the nano/micro-size ferromagnetic regions with a surrounding diamagnetic matrix formed, in a puzzled way, by the repeating training (quick cooling) cycles.

We extend the model of ferromagnetic superexchange in dilute magnetic semiconductors to the ferromagnetically ordered highly insulating compounds (dilute magnetic dielectrics). The intrinsic ferromagnetism without free carriers is observed in oxygen-deficient films of anatase TiO_2 doped with transition metal impurities in cation sublattice. We suppose that ferromagnetic order arises due to superexchange between complexes [oxygen vacancies + magnetic impurities], which are stabilized by charge transfer from vacancies to impurities. The Hund rule controls the superexchange via empty vacancy related levels so that it becomes possible only for the parallel orientation of impurity magnetic moments. The percolation threshold for magnetic ordering is determined by the radius of vacancy levels, but the exchange mechanism does not require free carriers. The crucial role of the non-stoichiometry in formation of the ferromagnetism makes the Curie temperatures extremely sensitive to the methods of sample preparation.

We describe the mechanism of charge-spin transformation in a double quantum dot (DQD) with even occupation, where a time dependent gate voltage v(t) is applied to one of its two valleys, whereas the other one is coupled to the source and drain electrodes. The Kondo tunneling regime under strong Coulomb blockade may be realized when the spin spectrum of the DQD is formed by the ground state spin triplet and two singlet excitations. Charge fluctuations induced by v(t) result in transitions within the spin multiplet characterized by the SO(5) dynamical symmetry group. In a weakly non-adiabatic regime the decoherence, dephasing and relaxation processes affect Kondo tunneling. Each of these processes is caused by a special type of dynamical gauge fluctuations, so that one may discriminate between the decoherence in the ground state of a DQD and dephasing at finite temperatures.

It is shown that the mechanical motion of the central island (a small metallic particle) with the spin results in the time dependent tunneling width which leads to effective increase of the Kondo temperature. The time-dependent oscillating Kondo temperature T_K(t) changes the scaling behavior of the differential conductance resulting in the suppression of transport in a strong coupling- and its enhancement in a weak coupling regimes. Indirect exchange interaction between itinerant electrons and nano-structures with non-trivial geometrical configurations manifests a plethora of unexpected results. These configurations can be realized either in quantum dots with several potential valleys or in real complex molecules with strong correlations. Here we demonstrate that the Kondo effect may be suppressed under certain conditions in triple quantum dots with mirror symmetry at odd electron occupation. First, we show that the indirect exchange has ferromagnetic sign in the ground state of triple quantum dot in a two-terminal cross geometry for electron occupation N=3. Second, we show that for electron occupation N=1 in three-terminal fork geometry the zero-bias anomaly in the tunnel conductance is absent (despite the presence of Kondo screening) due to special symmetry of the dot wave function.

In this work we concentrate on the {\it point symmetry} of triangular triple quantum dot and its interplay with the {\it spin rotation symmetry} in the context of Kondo tunneling through this kind of artificial molecule.
A fully symmetric triangular triple quantum dot is considered, consisting of three identical puddles with the same individual properties (energy levels and Coulomb blockade parameters) and inter-dot coupling (tunnel amplitudes and electrostatic interaction). The underlying Kondo physics is determined by the product of a discrete rotation symmetry group in real space and a continuous rotation symmetry in spin space. These symmetries are reflected in the resulting exchange hamiltonian which naturally involves spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The ensuing poor-man scaling equations are solved and the Kondo temperature is calculated.

Experimentally, such a process corresponds to sharp peaks in the frequency dependence of the differential scattering cross section. The peak frequency strongly depends on the direction of the scattered light. As a result, $1D\to 2D$ crossover can be observed in the scattering spectrum. It manifests itself as a splitting of single lines into multiplets (mostly doublets). The splitting magnitude increases with interaction in QCB crosses, while the peak amplitudes decrease with electron-electron interaction within a QCB constituent.

A microscopic model of indirect exchange interaction between transition metal impurities in dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is proposed. The hybridization of the impurity d-electrons with the heavy hole band states is largely responsible for the transfer of electrons between the impurities, whereas Hund rule for the electron occupation of the impurity d-shells makes the transfer spin selective. The model is applied to such systems as $n-$type GaN:Mn and $p-$type (Ga,Mn)As, $p-$type (Ga,Mn)P. In $n-$type DMS with Mn$^{2+/3+}$ impurities the exchange mechanisms is rather close to the kinematic exchange proposed by Zener for mixed-valence Mn ions. In $p-$type DMS ferromagnetism is governed by the kinematic mechanism involving the kinetic energy gain of heavy hole carriers caused by their hybridization with 3d electrons of Mn$^{2+}$ impurities. Using the molecular field approximation the Curie temperatures $T_C$ are calculated for several systems as functions of the impurity and hole concentrations. Comparison with the available experimental data shows a good agreement.

The concept of dynamical hidden symmetries in the physics of electron tunneling through composite quantum dots (CQD) and quantum ladders (QL) is developed and elucidated. Quite generally, dynamical symmetries are realizable in the space of low energy excited states in a given charge sector of nanoobjects, which involve spin variables and/or electron-hole pairs. While spin multiplets in an individual rung of a QL or in an isolated CQD form a representation space of the usual rotation group, this SU(2) symmetry is broken due to spin transfer (in QL) electron cotunneling through CQD. Dynamical symmetries in the space of spin multiplets are then unravelled in these processes. The corresponding symmetry groups are described by SO(n) or SU(n) depending on the origin of rotation group symmetry breaking. The effective spin Hamiltonians of QL and CQD are derived and expressed in terms of the pertinent group generators. We employ fermionization procedure for analyzing the physical content of these dynamical symmetries, including Kondo tunneling through CQD and Haldane gap formation in QL.

This paper is devoted to a systematic exposure of the Kondo physics in quantum dots for which the low energy spin excitations consist of a few different spin multiplets $|S_{i}M_{i}>$. Under certain conditions (to be explained below) some of the lowest energy levels $E_{S_{i}}$ are nearly degenerate. The dot in its ground state cannot then be regarded as a simple quantum top in the sense that beside its spin operator other dot (vector) operators ${\bf R}_{n}$ are needed (in order to fully determine its quantum states), which have non-zero matrix elements between states of different spin multiplets $<S_{i}M_{i} |{\bf R}_{n}|S_{j}M_{j} > \ne 0$. These "Runge-Lenz" operators do not appear in the isolated dot-Hamiltonian (so in some sense they are "hidden"). Yet, they are exposed when tunneling between dot and leads is switched on. The effective spin Hamiltonian which couples the metallic electron spin ${\bf s}$ with the operators of the dot then contains new exchange terms, $J_{n} {\bf s} \cdot {\bf R}_{n}$ beside the ubiquitous ones $J_{i} {\bf s}\cdot {\bf S}_{i}$. The operators ${\bf S}_{i}$ and ${\bf R}_{n}$ generate a dynamical group (usually SO(n)). Remarkably, the value of $n$ can be controlled by gate voltages, indicating that abstract concepts such as dynamical symmetry groups are experimentally realizable. Moreover, when an external magnetic field is applied then, under favorable circumstances, the exchange interaction involves solely the Runge-Lenz operators ${\bf R}_{n}$ and the corresponding dynamical symmetry group is SU(n). For example, the celebrated group SU(3) is realized in triple quantum dot with four electrons.

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy can be used as an important and effective tool for probing periodic networks of quantum wires or nanotubes (quantum crossbars, QCB) at finite frequencies far from the Luttinger liquid fixed point. Plasmon excitations in QCB may be involved in resonance diffraction of incident electromagnetic waves and in optical absorption in the IR part of the spectrum. Direct absorption of external electric field in QCB strongly depends on the direction of the wave vector ${\bf q}.$ This results in two types of $1D\to 2D$ dimensional crossover with varying angle of an incident wave or its frequency. In the case of QCB interacting with semiconductor substrate, capacitive contact between them does not destroy the Luttinger liquid character of the long wave QCB excitations. However, the dielectric losses on a substrate surface are significantly changed due to appearance of additional Landau dam**. The latter is initiated by diffraction processes on QCB superlattice and manifests itself as strong but narrow absorption peaks lying below the dam** region of an isolated substrate.Submi

The latter are assumed to be ordered in a Neel state, brought about by delicate interactions that are not included in the Kugel-Khomskii Hamiltonian. Within our model calculations, each of the t2g bands is found to acquire a finite, temperature-dependent dispersion, that lifts the orbital degeneracy. The orbital excitations are found to be heavily damped over a rather wide band. Consequently, they do not participate as a separate branch of excitations in the low-temperature thermodynamics.e

Renormalization group equations for the corresponding three exchange constants $J_{l}$, $J_{r}$ and $J_{lr}$ are solved (to third order). Since $J_{lr}$ is relevant, the system is mapped on an anisotropic two-channel Kondo problem. The structure of the conductance as function of temperature and gate voltage implies that in the weak and intermediate coupling regimes, two-channel Kondo physics persists at temperatures as low as several $T_{K}$. At even electron occupation, the number of channels equals twice the spin of the triple dot (hence it is a fully screened impurity).

It is shown that in p -type III-V DMS the indirect exchange between Mn impurities has similarities with the Zener mechanism in transition metal oxides. Here the mobile holes and localized states near the top of the valence band play the role of unoccupied oxygen orbitals which induce ferromagnetism. The Curie temperature estimated from the proposed kinematic exchange agrees with recent experiments on GaAs:Mn. The model is also applicable to the GaP:Mn system.

Abstract:
It is shown that the resonance Kondo tunneling through a double quantum dot (DQD) with even occupation and singlet ground state may arise at a strong bias, which compensates the energy of singlet/triplet excitation. Using the renormalization group technique we derive scaling equations and calculate the differential conductance as a function of an auxiliary dc-bias for parallel DQD.

Abstract:
Kondo tunneling reveals hidden SO(n) dynamical symmetries of evenly occupied quantum dots. As is exemplified for an experimentally realizable triple quantum dot in parallel geometry, the possible values n=3,4,5,7 can be easily tuned by gate voltages. Following construction of the corresponding o(n) algebras, scaling equations are derived and Kondo temperatures are calculated. The symmetry group…

The symmetry group for a magnetic field induced anisotropic Kondo tunneling is SU(2) or SO(4).
