Magnetic properties and magnetostructural phase transitions in Ni2+xMn1-xGa shape memory alloys
Abstract: A systematic study of magnetic properties of Ni2+xMn1-xGa (0 \le x \le 0.19) Heusler alloys undergoing structural martensite-austenite transformations while in ferromagnetic state has been performed. From measurements of spontaneous magnetization, Ms(T), jumps ΔM at structural phase transitions were determined. Virtual Curie temperatures of the martensite were estimated from the comparison of ma… ▽ More

Aging-induced complex transformation behavior of martensite in Ni57.5Mn17.5Ga25 shape memory alloy
Abstract: Ni57.5Mn17.5Ga25 shape memory alloy exhibits a complex transformation behavior, appearing after aging. Aging in the austenitic state resulted in an ordinary decrease of the martensitic transformation temperature. Contrary to this, aging in the martensitic state brought about unusual features of the martensitic transformation observed so far only in Ni-Ti alloys.

Influence of intermartensitic transitions on transport properties of Ni2.16Mn0.84Ga alloy
Abstract: Magnetic, transport, and x-ray diffraction measurements of ferromagnetic shape memory alloy Ni$_{2.16}$Mn$_{0.84}$Ga revealed that this alloy undergoes an intermartensitic transition upon cooling, whereas no such a transition is observed upon subsequent heating. The difference in the modulation of the martensite forming upon cooling from the high-temperature austenitic state [5-layered (5M) mart… ▽ More

Influence of Fe and Co on Phase Transitions in Ni-Mn-Ga Alloys
Abstract: Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and magnetic measurements were performed to study the influence of ferromagnetic 3-d transition elements Fe and Co on structural and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Ni2MnGa. Addition of Fe or Co on the Ni sites decreases the temperature of martensitic phase transition Tm, whereas addition of Co on the Mn sites results in a consider… ▽ More

Shape memory ferromagnets
Abstract: In ferromagnetic alloys with shape memory large reversible strains can be obtained by rearranging the martensitic domain structure by a magnetic field. Magnetization through displacement of domain walls is possible in the presence of high magnetocrystalline anisotropy, when martensitic structure rearrangement is energetically favorable compared to the reorientation of magnetic moments. In ferrom… ▽ More

An efficient control of Curie temperature $T_C$ in Ni-Mn-Ga alloys
Abstract: We have studied the influence of alloying with a fourth element on the temperature of ferromagnetic ordering $T_C$ in Ni-Mn-Ga Heusler alloys. It is found that $T_C$ increases or decreases, depending on the substitution. The increase of $T_C$ is observed when Ni is substituted by either Fe or Co. On the contrary, the substitution of Mn for V or Ga for In strongly reduces $T_C$.

Detection of weak-order phase transitions in ferromagnets by ac resistometry
Abstract: It is shown that ac resistometry can serve as an effective tool for the detection of phase transitions, such as spin reorientation or premartensitic phase transitions, which generally are not disclosed by dc resistivity measurement. Measurement of temperature dependence of impedance, $Z(T)$, allows one to unmask the anomaly, corresponding to a weak-order phase transition. The appearance of such… ▽ More

Training of the Ni-Mn-Fe-Ga ferromagnetic shape-memory alloys by cycling in a high magnetic field
Abstract: The temperature and magnetic field dependencies of Ni-Mn-Ga polycrystals deformation are investigated. Ingots were prepared by arc-melting in argon atmosphere and further annealing. A training procedure (cycling across the martensitic transition point) for the two-way shape-memory effect was performed with Ni$_{2.16}$Fe$_{0.04}$Mn$_{0.80}$Ga samples. Changes in sample deformations were noticed w… ▽ More

The magnetic field influence on magnetostructural phase transition in Ni2.19Mn0.81Ga
Abstract: Magnetic properties of a polycrystalline alloy Ni$_{2.19}$Mn$_{0.81}$Ga, which undergoes a first-order magnetostructural phase transition from cubic paramagnetic to tetragonal ferromagnetic phase, are studied. Hysteretic behavior of isothermal magnetization $M(H)$ has been observed in a temperature interval of the magnetostructural transition in magnetic fields from 20 to 100 kOe. Temperature de… ▽ More

Entropy change at the martensitic transformation in ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Ni_{2+x}Mn_{1-x}Ga
Abstract: The entropy change $ΔS$ between the high-temperature cubic phase and the low-temperature tetragonally-based martensitic phase of Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga ($x = 0 - 0.20$) alloys was studied. The experimental results obtained indicate that $ΔS$ in the Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga alloys increases with the Ni excess $x$. The increase of $ΔS$ is presumably accounted for by an increase of magnetic contribut… ▽ More

Magnetic properties of Ni2.18Mn0.82Ga Heusler alloys with a coupled magnetostructural transition
Abstract: Polycrystalline Ni2.18Mn0.82Ga Heusler alloys with a coupled magnetostructural transition are studied by differential scanning calorimetry, magnetic and resistivity measurements. Coupling of the magnetic and structural subsystems results in unusual magnetic features of the alloy. These uncommon magnetic properties of Ni2.18Mn0.82Ga are attributed to the first-order structural transition from a t… ▽ More

Abstract: Order-disorder phase transition in Ni$_{2+x}Mn_{1-x}$Ga Heusler alloys has been studied. It was found that the $L2_1 \to B2^{\prime}$ phase transition in Ni2+xMn1-xGa (x = 0.16 - 0.20) Heusler alloys is of second order and the temperature of this transition decreases with Ni excess.

Abstract: A study of polycrystalline and single crystalline Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga alloys by means of dilatometric and strain gage techniques shows that large strain can be induced in the temperature range of the martensitic transformation by application of an external magnetic field. The biggest strain induced by magnetic field was observed in the samples of chemical compositions where the structural and… ▽ More
