Extensive elastic scattering data measured at energies around 10 to 20 MeV/nucleon for some identical systems, like 12C+12C and 16O+16O, exhibit the nuclear rainbow pattern of broad Airy oscillations of the cross section at medium and large angles. Due to the identity of the scattered projectile and recoiled target, the rainbow pattern at angles around and beyond $θ_{\rm c.m.}\approx 90^\circ$ is strongly deteriorated by the boson exchange. The nuclear rainbow features in the identical-particles elastic scattering discussed so far are based on the nearside-farside (NF) decomposition of the scattering amplitude given by an optical model calculation neglecting the projectile-target exchange symmetry. Moreover, the NF decomposition method was developed in the 70s by Fuller for nonidentical systems only, and the details of how the exchange symmetry of an identical system affects the evolution of nuclear rainbow remain unexplored. Therefore, the Fuller method is generalized in this work for the elastic scattering of two identical (spin-zero) nuclei, with the projectile-target exchange symmetry taken explicitly into account. The results obtained for elastic 12C+12C and 16O+16O scattering at low energies show the exchange symmetry results in a symmetric interchange of the nearside and farside patterns at angles passing $θ_{\rm c.m.}=90^\circ$, which requires a more subtle interpretation of nuclear rainbow. We also found that a similar NF interchange occurs in a nonidentical nucleus-nucleus system with the core-core symmetry, where the elastic cross section at backward angles is due mainly to the elastic transfer of cluster or nucleon between two identical cores. This interesting effect is illustrated in the elastic 16O+12C scattering at low energies where the elastic $α$ transfer between two 12C cores has been proven to enhance the elastic cross section at backward angles.

Equation of states (EOS) of the spin-polarized nuclear matter (NM) is studied within the Hartree-Fock (HF) formalism using the realistic density dependent nucleon-nucleon interaction. With a nonzero fraction $Δ$ of spin-polarized baryons in NM, the spin- and spin-isospin dependent parts of the HF energy density give rise to the \emph{spin symmetry} energy that behaves in about the same manner as the \emph{isospin symmetry} energy, widely discussed in literature as the nuclear symmetry energy. The present HF study shows a strong correlation between the spin symmetry energy and nuclear symmetry energy over the whole range of baryon densities. The important contribution of the spin symmetry energy to the EOS of the spin-polarized NM is found to be comparable with that of the nuclear symmetry energy to the EOS of the isospin-polarized or asymmetric (neutron-rich) NM. Based on the HF energy density, the EOS of the spin-polarized ($β$-stable) np$eμ$ matter is obtained for the determination of the macroscopic properties of neutron star (NS). A realistic density dependence of the spin-polarized fraction $Δ$ have been suggested to explore the impact of the spin symmetry energy to the gravitational mass $M$ and radius $R$, as well as the tidal deformability of NS. Given the empirical constrains inferred from a coherent Bayesian analysis of gravitational wave signals of the NS merger GW170817 and the observed masses of the heaviest pulsars, the strong impacts of the spin symmetry energy $W$, nuclear symmetry energy $S$, and nuclear incompressibility $K$ to the EOS of nucleonic matter in magnetar were revealed.

The elastic scattering cross section measured at energies $E\lesssim 10$ MeV/nucleon for some light heavy-ion systems having two identical cores like $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C exhibits an enhanced oscillatory pattern at the backward angles. Such a pattern is known to be due to the transfer of the valence nucleon or cluster between the two identical cores. In particular, the elastic $α$ transfer has been shown to originate directly from the core-exchange symmetry in the elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering. Given the strong transition strength of the $2^+_1$ state of $^{12}$C and its large overlap with the $^{16}$O ground state, it is natural to expect a similar $α$ transfer process (or inelastic $α$ transfer) to take place in the inelastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering. The present work provides a realistic coupled channel description of the $α$ transfer in the inelastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering at low energies. Based on the results of the 4 coupled reaction-channels calculation, we show a significant contribution of the $α$ transfer to the inelastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering cross section at the backward angles. These results suggest that the explicit coupling to the $α$ transfer channels is crucial in the studies of the elastic and inelastic scattering of a nucleus-nucleus system with the core-exchange symmetry.

Neutron star (NS) is a unique astronomical compact object where the four fundamental interactions have been revealed from the observation and studied in different ways. While the macroscopic properties of NS like mass and radius can be determined within the General Relativity using a realistic equation of state (EOS) of NS matter, such an EOS is usually generated by a nuclear structure model like, e.g., the nuclear mean-field approach to asymmetric nuclear matter. Given the radius of NS extended to above 10 km and its mass up to twice the solar mass, NS is expected to be tidally deformed when it is embedded in a strong tidal field. Such a tidal effect was confirmed unambiguously in the gravitation wave signals detected recently by the LIGO and Virgo laser interferometers from GW170817, the first ever direct observation of a binary NS merger. A nonrelativistic mean-field study is carried out in the present work within the Hartree-Fock formalism to construct the EOS of NS matter, which is then used to determine the tidal deformability, gravitational mass, and radius of NS. The mean-field results are compared with the constraints imposed for these quantities by the global analysis of the observed GW170817 data, and a strong impact by the incompressibility of nuclear matter on the hydrostatic configuration of NS is shown.

The nuclear rainbow observed in the elastic $α$-nucleus and light heavy-ion scattering is proven to be due to the refraction of the scattering wave by a deep, attractive real optical potential. The nuclear rainbow pattern, established as a broad oscillation of the Airy minima in the elastic cross section, originates from an interference of the refracted far-side scattering amplitudes. It is natural to expect a similar rainbow pattern also in the inelastic scattering of a nucleus-nucleus system that exhibits a pronounced rainbow pattern in the elastic channel. Although some feature of the nuclear rainbow in the inelastic nucleus-nucleus scattering was observed in experiment, the measured inelastic cross sections exhibit much weaker rainbow pattern, where the Airy oscillation is suppressed and smeared out. To investigate this effect, a novel method of the near-far decomposition of the inelastic scattering amplitude is proposed to explicitly reveal the coupled partial-wave contributions to the inelastic cross section. Using the new decomposition method, our coupled channel analysis of the elastic and inelastic $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C and $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering at the refractive energies shows unambiguously that the suppression of the nuclear rainbow pattern in the inelastic scattering cross section is caused by a destructive interference of the partial waves of different multipoles. However, the inelastic scattering remains strongly refractive in these cases, where the far-side scattering is dominant at medium and large angles like that observed in the elastic scattering.

Elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering is known to exhibit the nuclear rainbow pattern at incident energies $E_\text{lab}\gtrsim 200$ MeV, with the Airy structure of the far-side scattering cross section clearly seen at medium and large angles. Such a rainbow pattern is well described by the deep real optical potential (OP) given by the double-folding model (DFM). At lower energies, the extensive elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering data show consistently that the nuclear rainbow pattern at backward angles is deteriorated by an oscillating enhancement of elastic cross section that is difficult to describe in the conventional optical model (OM). Given a significant $α$ spectroscopic factor predicted for the dissociation $^{16}$O$\toα+^{12}$C by the shell model and $α$-cluster models, the contribution of the elastic $α$ transfer (or the core-core exchange) to the elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering should not be negligible and is expected to account for the enhanced elastic cross section at backward angles. To reveal the impact of the elastic $α$ transfer, a systematic coupled reaction channels analysis of the elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering has been performed, with the coupling between the elastic scattering and elastic $α$ transfer channels treated explicitly, using the real OP given by the DFM. We found that the elastic $α$ transfer enhances the near-side scattering significantly at backward angles, giving rise to an oscillating distortion of the smooth Airy structure. The dynamic polarization of the OP by the coupling between the elastic scattering and elastic $α$ transfer channels can be effectively taken into account in the OM calculation by an angular-momentum (or parity) dependent potential added to the imaginary OP, as suggested by Frahn and Hussein 40 years ago.

Magnetic field of rotating pulsar might be so strong that the equation of state (EOS) of neutron star (NS) matter is significantly affected by the spin polarization of baryons. In the present work, the EOS of the spin-polarized nuclear matter is investigated in the nonrelativistic Hartree-Fock formalism, using a realistic density dependent nucleon-nucleon interaction with its spin and spin-isospin dependence accurately adjusted to the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results for the spin-polarized nuclear matter. The nuclear symmetry energy and proton fraction are found to increase significantly with the increasing spin polarization of baryons, leading to a larger probability of the direct Urca process in the cooling of magnetar. The EOS of the $β$-stable np$eμ$ matter obtained at different spin polarizations of baryons is used as the input for the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations to determine the hydrostatic configuration of NS. Based on the GW170817 constraint on the radius $R_{1.4}$ of NS with $M\approx 1.4_\odot$, our mean-field results show that up to $60~\%$ of baryons in the NS merger might be spin-polarized. This result supports the magnetar origin of the blue kilonova ejecta of GW170817 suggested by Metzger et al., and the spin polarization of baryons needs, therefore, to be properly treated in the many-body calculation of the EOS of NS matter before comparing the calculated NS mass and radius with those constrained by the multi-messenger GW170817 observation.

With the exchange part of the nucleon folded OP treated exactly in the Hartree-Fock manner, a compact nonlocal version of the folding model is suggested in the present work to determine explicitly the isospin-dependent, nonlocal central term of the nucleon OP. To solve the optical model (OM) equation with a complex nonlocal OP, the calculable $R$-matrix method is used to analyse the elastic neutron and proton scattering on $^{40,48}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr, and $^{208}$Pb targets at low energies. The inclusion of the RT into the folding model calculation of the nonlocal nucleon OP was shown to be essential for the overall good OM description of elastic nucleon scattering. Background: A recent coupled reaction channel (CRC) study shows that the enhanced oscillation of the elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C cross section at backward angles is due mainly to the elastic $α$ transfer or the core exchange. Such a process gives rise to a parity-dependent term in the total elastic $S$-matrix, an indication of the parity dependence of the $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C optical potential (OP).
Purpose: To explicitly determine the core exchange potential (CEP) induced by the symmetric exchange of the two $^{12}$C cores in the elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering at $E_{\rm lab}= 132$ and 300 MeV, and explore its parity dependence.
Method: $S$-matrix generated by CRC description of the elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering is used as the input for the inversion calculation to obtain the effective local OP that contains both the Wigner and Majorana terms.
Results: The high-precision inversion results show a strong contribution by the complex Majorana term in the total OP of the $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C system, and thus provide for the first time a direct estimation of the parity-dependent CEP.
Conclusions: The elastic $α$ transfer or exchange of the two $^{12}$C cores in the $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C system gives rise to a complex parity dependence of the total OP. This should be a general feature of the OP for the light heavy-ion systems that contain two identical cores.

The nuclear mean-field potential built up by the $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C interaction at energies relevant for the carbon burning process is calculated in the double-folding model (DFM) using the realistic ground-state density of $^{12}$C and the CDM3Y3 density dependent nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction, with the rearrangement term properly included. To validate the use of a density dependent NN interaction in the DFM calculation in the low-energy regime, an adiabatic approximation is suggested for the nucleus-nucleus overlap density. The reliability of the nuclear mean-field potential predicted by this low-energy version of the DFM is tested in a detailed optical model analysis of the elastic $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C scattering data at energies below 10 MeV/nucleon. The folded mean-field potential is then used to study the astrophysical $S$ factor of the $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C fusion in the barrier penetration model. The extensive elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering data measured at low energies show consistently an oscillating enhancement of the elastic cross section at backward angles that is difficult to describe within the conventional optical model. Given the significant $α$ spectroscopic factors predicted for the dissociation $^{16}$O$\toα+^{12}$C by the shell model (SM) and $α$-cluster model calculations, the contribution of the $α$ transfer channels to the elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering should not be negligible, and is expected to account for the enhanced oscillation of the elastic cross section at backward angles. To reveal the impact of the $α$ transfer, a systematic coupled reaction channels (CRC) analysis of the elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering has been performed where the multistep couplings between the elastic and inelastic scattering channels, the direct and indirect $α$ transfer channels were treated explicitly, using the real optical potentials and inelastic scattering form factors determined by the double-folding model. The momentum distribution of $^{11}$Be fragments produced by the breakup of $^{12}$Be interacting with a proton target at 700.5 MeV/$u$ energy has been measured at GSI Darmstadt. To obtain the structure information on the anomaly of the $N=8$ neutron shell, the momentum distribution of $^{11}$Be fragments from the one-neutron knockout $^{12}$Be(p,pn) reaction, measured in inverse kinematics, has been analysed in the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) based on a quasi-free scattering scenario. The DWIA analysis shows a surprisingly strong contribution of the neutron $0d_{5/2}$ orbital in $^{12}$Be to the transverse momentum distribution of the $^{11}$Be fragments. The single-neutron $0d_{5/2}$ spectroscopic factor deduced from the present knock-out data is 1.39(10), which is significantly larger than that deduced recently from data of $^{12}$Be breakup on a carbon target. Realistic density dependent CDM3Yn versions of the M3Y interaction have been used in an extended Hartree-Fock (HF) calculation of nuclear matter (NM), with the nucleon single-particle potential determined from the total NM energy based on the Hugenholtz-van Hove theorem that gives rise naturally to a rearrangement term (RT). Using the RT of the single-nucleon potential obtained exactly at different NM densities, the density- and energy dependence of the CDM3Yn interactions was modified to account properly for both the RT and observed energy dependence of the nucleon optical potential. Based on a local density approximation, the double-folding model of the nucleus-nucleus optical potential has been extended to take into account consistently the rearrangement effect and energy dependence of the nuclear mean-field potential, using the modified CDM3Yn interactions. The extended double-folding model was applied to study the elastic $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C and $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering at the refractive energies, where the Airy structure of the nuclear rainbow has been well established. The nuclear mean-field potential arising from the $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C interaction at the low energies relevant for the astrophysical carbon burning process has been constructed within the double-folding model, using the realistic nuclear ground-state density of the $^{12}$C nucleus and the effective M3Y nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction constructed from the G-matrix of the Paris (free) NN potential. To explore the nuclear medium effect, both the original density independent M3Y-Paris interaction and its density dependent CDM3Y6 version have been used in the folding model calculation of the $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C potential. The folded potentials at the different energies were used in the optical model description of the elastic $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C scattering at the energies around and below the Coulomb barrier, as well as in the barrier penetration model to estimate the fusion cross section and astrophysical $S$ factor of the $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C reactions at the low energies. The obtained results are in good agreement with experimental data over a wide range of energies.

A consistent Hartree-Fock study of the equation of state (EOS) of asymmetric nuclear matter at finite temperature has been performed using realistic choices of the effective, density dependent nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction, which were successfully used in different nuclear structure and reaction studies. Given the importance of the nuclear symmetry energy in the neutron star formation, EOS's associated with different behaviors of the symmetry energy were used to study hot asymmetric nuclear matter. The slope of the symmetry energy and nucleon effective mass with increasing baryon density was found to affect the thermal properties of nuclear matter significantly. Different density dependent NN interactions were further used to study the EOS of hot protoneutron star (PNS) matter of the $npeμν$ composition in $β$-equilibrium. The hydrostatic configurations of PNS in terms of the maximal gravitational mass $M_{\rm max}$ and radius, central density, pressure and temperature at the total entropy per baryon $S/A= 1,2$ and 4 have been determined in both the neutrino-free and neutrino-trapped scenarios. The obtained results show consistently a strong impact of the symmetry energy and nucleon effective mass on thermal properties and composition of hot PNS matter. $M_{\rm max}$ values obtained for the (neutrino-free) $β$-stable PNS at $S/A=4$ were used to assess time $t_{\rm BH}$ of the collapse of 40 $M_\odot$ protoneutron progenitor to black hole, based on a correlation between $t_{\rm BH}$ and $M_{\rm max}$ found from the hydrodynamic simulation by Hempel {\it et al.}.

The Glauber model analysis of the elastic $^{6,8}$He+$p$ scattering data at energies around 700 MeV/nucleon, measured in two separate experiments at GSI-Darmstadt, has been done using several phenomenological parametrizations of the nuclear matter density. By taking into account the new data points measured at the high momentum transfer, the nuclear matter radii of $^{6,8}$He were accurately determined from the Glauber model analysis of the data, with the spin-orbital interaction explicitly taken into account. The well-known geometry for the core and dineutron halo has been used with the new parametrizations of the $^{6}$He density to extract the detailed information on the structure of $^{6}$He in terms of the core and dineutron halo radii. An enhanced sensitivity of the data measured at the high momentum transfer to the core part of the $^{6,8}$He densities has been found.

The nucleon mean-field potential has been thoroughly investigated in an extended Hartree-Fock (HF) calculation of nuclear matter (NM) using the CDM3Y3 and CDM3Y6 density dependent versions of the M3Y interaction. The single-particle (s/p) energies of nucleons in NM are determined according to the Hugenholtz-van Hove theorem, which gives rise naturally to a rearrangement term (RT) of the s/p potential at the Fermi momentum. Using the RT obtained exactly at the different NM densities and neutron-proton asymmetries, a consistent method is suggested to take into account effectively the momentum dependence of the RT of the s/p potential within the standard HF scheme. To obtain a realistic momentum dependence of the nucleon optical potential (OP), the high-momentum part of the s/p potential was accurately readjusted to reproduce the observed energy dependence of the nucleon OP over a wide range of energies. The impact of the RT and momentum dependence of the s/p potential on the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy and nucleon effective mass has been studied in details. The high-momentum tail of the s/p potential was found to have a sizable effect on the slope of the symmetry energy and the neutron-proton effective mass splitting at supranuclear densities of the NM. Based on a local density approximation, the folding model of the nucleon OP of finite nuclei has been extended to take into account consistently the RT and momentum dependence of the nucleon OP in the same mean-field manner, and successfully applied to study the elastic neutron scattering on the lead target at the energies around the Fermi energy.

The folding model analysis of the elastic $α+ α$ scattering at the incident energies below the reaction threshold of 34.7 MeV (in the lab system) has been done using the well-tested density dependent versions of the M3Y interaction and realistic choices for the $^4$He density. Because the absorption is negligible at the energies below the reaction threshold, we were able to probe the $α+ α$ optical potential at low energies quite unambiguously and found that the $α+ α$ overlap density used to construct the density dependence of the M3Y interaction is strongly distorted by the Pauli blocking. This result gives possible explanation of a long-standing inconsistency of the double-folding model in its study of the elastic $α+ α$ and $α$-nucleus scattering at low energies using the same realistic density dependent M3Y interaction.

The charge-exchange (3He,t) scattering to the isobaric analog state (IAS) of the target can be considered as "elastic" scattering of 3He by the isovector term of the optical potential (OP) that flips the projectile isospin. Therefore, the accurately measured charge-exchange scattering cross- section for the IAS can be a good probe of the isospin dependence of the OP, which is determined exclusively within the folding model by the difference between the neutron and proton densities and isospin dependence of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. Given the neutron skin of the target is related directly to the same density difference, it can be well probed in the analysis of the charge- exchange (3He,t) reactions at medium energies when the two-step processes can be neglected and the t-matrix interaction can be used in the folding calculation. For this purpose, the data of the (3He,t) scattering to the IAS of 90Zr and 208Pb targets at Elab = 420 MeV have been analyzed in the distorted wave Born approximation using the double-folded charge-exchange form factor. The neutron skin deduced for these two nuclei turned out to be in a good agreement with the existing database.

The Fermi transition (ΔL=ΔS=0 and ΔT=1) between the nuclear isobaric analog states (IAS), induced by the charge-exchange (p,n) or (3He,t) reaction, can be considered as "elastic" scattering of proton or 3He by the isovector term of the optical potential (OP) that flips the projectile isospin. The accurately measured (p,n) or (3He,t) scattering cross-section to the IAS can be used, therefore, to probe the isospin dependence of the proton or 3He optical potential. Within the folding model, the isovector part of the OP is determined exclusively by the neutron-proton difference in the nuclear densities and the isospin dependence of the effective nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction. Because the isovector coupling explicitly links the isovector part of the proton or 3He optical potential to the cross section of the charge-exchange (p,n) or (3He,t) scattering to the IAS, the isospin dependence of the effective (in-medium) NN interaction can be well tested in the folding model analysis of these charge-exchange reactions. On the other hand, the same isospin- and density dependent NN interaction can also be used in a Hartree-Fock calculation of asymmetric nuclear matter, to estimate the nuclear matter energy and its asymmetry part (the nuclear symmetry energy). As a result, the fine-tuning of the isospin dependence of the effective NN interaction against the measured (p,n) or (3He,t) cross sections should allow us to make some realistic prediction of the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence.

Analysis of data involving nuclei far from stability often requires optical potential (OP) for neutron scattering. Since neutron data is seldom available, while proton scattering data is more abundant, it is useful to have estimates of the difference of the neutron and proton optical potentials. This information is contained in the isospin dependence of the nucleon OP. Here we attempt to provide it for the nucleon-208Pb system. The goal of this paper is to obtain accurate n+208Pb scattering data, and use it, together with existing p+208Pb and 208Pb(p,n)208$Bi*_{IAS} data, to obtain an accurate estimate of the isospin dependence of the nucleon OP at energies in the 30-60 MeV range. Cross sections for n+208Pb scattering were measured at 30.4 and 40.0 MeV, with a typical relative (normalization) accuracy of 2-4% (3%). An angular range of 15 to 130 degrees was covered using the beam-swinger time of flight system at Michigan State University. These data were analyzed by a consistent optical model study of the neutron data and of elastic p+208Pb scattering at 45 MeV and 54 MeV. These results were combined with a coupled-channel analysis of the 208Pb(p,n) reaction at 45 MeV, exciting the 0^+ isobaric analog state in 208Bi. The new data and analysis give an accurate estimate the isospin impurity of the nucleon-208Pb OP at 30.4 MeV, caused by the Coulomb correction to the proton OP. The corrections to the real proton OP given by the CH89 global systematics was found to be only few percent, while for the imaginary potential it was over 20% at the nuclear surface. Based on the analysis of the measured elastic p+208Pb data at 40 MeV, a Coulomb correction of similar strength and shape was also predicted for the p+208Pb OP at energy around 54 MeV.

The nuclear mean-field potentials obtained in the Hartree-Fock method with different choices of the in-medium nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction have been used to study the equation of state (EOS) of the neutron star (NS) matter. The EOS of the uniform NS core has been calculated for the np$eμ$ composition in the $β$-equilibrium at zero temperature, using version Sly4 of the Skyrme interaction as well as two density-dependent versions of the finite-range M3Y interaction (CDM3Y$n$ and M3Y-P$n$), and versions D1S and D1N of the Gogny interaction. Although the considered effective NN interactions were proven to be quite realistic in numerous nuclear structure and/or reaction studies, they give quite different behaviors of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter at supranuclear densities that lead to the \emph{soft} and \emph{stiff} scenarios discussed recently in the literature. Different EOS's of the NS core and the EOS of the NS crust given by the compressible liquid drop model have been used as input of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations to study how the nuclear symmetry energy affects the model prediction of different NS properties, like the cooling process as well as the gravitational mass, radius, and moment of inertia.

Given the (spin and isospin zero) $α$-particle as a good probe for the nuclear isoscalar excitations, it remains a puzzle why the peak of the $2^+_2$ state could not be clearly identified in the measured \aap spectra. To investigate this effect, we have performed a microscopic folding model analysis of the \ac scattering data at 240 and 386 MeV in both the Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA) and coupled-channel (CC) formalism, using the nuclear transition densities given by the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) approach and a complex CDM3Y6 density dependent interaction. Although AMD predicts a very weak transition strength for the direct $(0^+_1\to 2^+_2)$ excitation, our detailed analysis has shown evidence that a weak \emph{ghost} of the $2^+_2$ state could be identified in the 240 MeV \aap data for the $0^+_3$ state at 10.3 MeV, when the CC effects by the indirect excitation of the $2^+_2$ state are taken into account. Based on the same AMD structure input and preliminary \aap data at 386 MeV, we have estimated relative contributions from the $2^+_2$ and $0^+_3$ states to the excitation of $^{12}$C at $E_{\rm x}\approx 10$ MeV as well as possible contamination by $3^-_1$ state.

The two recent density-dependent versions of the finite-range M3Y interaction (CDM3Y$n$ and M3Y-P$n$) have been probed against the bulk properties of asymmetric nuclear matter (NM) in the nonrelativistic Hartree Fock (HF) formalism. The same HF study has also been done with the famous Skyrme (SLy4) and Gogny (D1S and D1N) interactions which were well tested in the nuclear structure calculations. Our HF results are compared with those given by other many-body calculations like the Dirac-Brueckner Hartree-Fock approach or ab-initio variational calculation using free nucleon-nucleon interaction, and by both the nonrelativistic and relativistic mean-field studies using different model parameters. Although the two considered density-dependent versions of the M3Y interaction were proven to be quite realistic in the nuclear structure or reaction studies, they give two distinct behaviors of the NM symmetry energy at high densities, like the Asy-soft and Asy-stiff scenarios found earlier with other mean-field interactions. As a consequence, we obtain two different behaviors of the proton fraction in the $β$-equilibrium which in turn can imply two drastically different mechanisms for the neutron star cooling. While some preference of the Asy-stiff scenario was found based on predictions of the latest microscopic many-body calculations or empirical NM pressure and isospin diffusion data deduced from heavy-ion collisions, a consistent mean-field description of nuclear structure database is more often given by some Asy-soft type interaction like the Gogny or M3Y-P$n$ ones. Such a dilemma poses an interesting challenge to the modern mean-field approaches.

A coupled-channel analysis of the $^{18,20,22}$O$(p,p')$ data has been performed to determine the neutron transition strengths of 2$^+_1$ states in Oxygen targets, using the microscopic optical potential and inelastic form factor calculated in the folding model. A complex density- and \emph{isospin} dependent version of the CDM3Y6 interaction was constructed, based on the Brueckner-Hatree-Fock calculation of nuclear matter, for the folding model input. Given an accurate isovector density dependence of the CDM3Y6 interaction, the isoscalar ($δ_0$) and isovector ($δ_1$) deformation lengths of 2$^+_1$ states in $^{18,20,22}$O have been extracted from the folding model analysis of the $(p,p')$ data. A specific $N$-dependence of $δ_0$ and $δ_1$ has been established which can be linked to the neutron shell closure occurring at $N$ approaching 16. The strongest isovector deformation was found for 2$^+_1$ state in $^{20}$O, with $δ_1$ about 2.5 times larger than $δ_0$, which indicates a strong core polarization by the valence neutrons in $^{20}$O. The ratios of the neutron/proton transition matrix elements ($M_n/M_p$) determined for 2$^+_1$ states in $^{18,20}$O have been compared to those deduced from the mirror symmetry, using the measured $B(E2)$ values of 2$^+_1$ states in the proton rich $^{18}$Ne and $^{20}$Mg nuclei, to discuss the isospin impurity in the $2^+_1$ excitation of the $A=18,T=1$ and $A=20,T=2$ isobars.

Analyses of the inelastic $α$+$^{12}$C scattering at medium energies have indicated that the strength of the Hoyle state (the isoscalar 0$^+_2$ excitation at 7.65 MeV in $^{12}$C) seems to exhaust only 7 to 9% of the monopole energy weighted sum rule (EWSR), compared to about 15% of the EWSR extracted from inelastic electron scattering data. The full monopole transition strength predicted by realistic microscopic $α$-cluster models of the Hoyle state can be shown to exhaust up to 22% of the EWSR. To explore the missing monopole strength in the inelastic $α$+$^{12}$C scattering, we have performed a fully microscopic folding model analysis of the inelastic $α$+$^{12}$C scattering at $E_{\rm lab}=104$ to 240 MeV using the 3-$α$ resonating group wave function of the Hoyle state obtained by Kamimura, and a complex density-dependent M3Y interaction newly parametrized based on the Brueckner Hartree Fock results for nuclear matter. Our folding model analysis has shown consistently that the missing monopole strength of the Hoyle state is not associated with the uncertainties in the analysis of the $α$+$^{12}$C scattering, but is most likely due to the short lifetime and weakly bound structure of this state which significantly enhances absorption in the exit $α$+$^{12}$C$^*(0^+_2)$ channel.

Intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions can produce a spin polarization of the projectile-like species. Spin polarization has been observed for both nucleon removal and nucleon pickup processes. Qualitative agreement with measured spin polarization as a function of the momentum of the projectile-like fragment is found in a kinematical model that considers conservation of linear and angular momentum and assumes peripheral interactions between the fast projectile and target. Better quantitative agreement was reached by including more realistic angular distributions, de-orientation caused by gamma-ray emission, and by correcting for the out-of-plane acceptance. The newly introduced corrections were found to apply to both nucleon removal and nucleon pickup processes.

A new finite-range representation of the JLM effective nucleon-nucleon interaction is suggested based on the CDM3Y density dependent functional and M3Y-Paris interaction. The density dependence has been carefully adjusted at each energy so that the nucleon optical potential (OP) given by the new density dependent interaction in the Hartree-Fock calculation of nuclear matter closely matches the JLM nucleon OP given by the Brueckner-Hatree-Fock calculation. The new interaction has been used in the double-folding model to calculate the OP for the elastic $^{6}$Li,$^{6}$He,$^{12}$C + $^{12}$C scattering at different energies.

The nuclear ground state densities given by the Hartree-Fock-Bogoljubov formalism and the density dependent CDM3Y6 interaction were used as inputs for the folding calculation of the nucleon optical potential and \pn form factor. To have an accurate isospin dependence of the interaction, a complex isovector density dependence of the CDM3Y6 interaction has been carefully calibrated against the microscopic Brueckner-Hatree-Fock calculation by Jeukenne, Lejeune and Mahaux before being used as folding input. Since the isovector coupling was used to explicitly link the isovector part of the nucleon optical potential to the cross section of \pn reaction exciting the 0$^+$ isobaric analog states in $^{48}$Sc, $^{90}$Nb, $^{120}$Sb and $^{208}$Bi, the newly parameterized isovector density dependence could be well tested in the folding model analysis of the \pn reaction. The isospin- and density dependent CDM3Y6 interaction was further used in the Hartree-Fock calculation of asymmetric nuclear matter, and a realistic estimation of the nuclear symmetry energy has been made.

Elastic scattering of alpha-particle and some tightly-bound light nuclei has shown the pattern of rainbow scattering at medium energies, which is due to the refraction of the incident wave by a strongly attractive nucleus-nucleus potential. This review gives an introduction to the physics of the nuclear rainbow based essentially on the optical model description of the elastic scattering. Since the realistic nucleus-nucleus optical potential (OP) is the key to explore this interesting process, an overview of the main methods used to determine the nucleus-nucleus OP is presented. The refractive rainbow-like structures observed in other quasi-elastic scattering reactions have also been discussed. Some evidences for the refractive effect in the elastic scattering of unstable nuclei are presented and perspectives for the future studies are discussed.

A systematic $N$-dependence of $δ_0$ and $δ_1$ has been established which shows a link between $δ_1$ and the neutron-shell closure. Strong isovector deformations were found in several cases, e.g., the 2$^+_1$ state in $^{20}$O where $δ_1$ is nearly three times larger than $δ_0$. These results confirm the relation $δ_1>δ_0$ anticipated from the core polarization by the valence neutrons in the open-shell (neutron rich) nuclei. The effect of neutron shell closure at N=14 or 16 has been discussed based on the folding model analysis of the inelastic $^{22}$O+$p$ scattering data at 46.6 MeV/u measured recently at GANIL.

Large-angle elastic scattering of alpha-particle and strongly-bound light nuclei at a few tens MeV/nucleon has shown the pattern of rainbow scattering. This interesting process was shown to involve a significant overlap of the two colliding nuclei, with the total nuclear density well above the saturation density of normal nuclear matter (NM). For a microscopic calculation of the nucleus-nucleus potential within the folding model, we have developed a density dependent nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction based on the G-matrix interaction M3Y. Our folding analysis of the refractive 4He, 12C, and 16O elastic scattering shows consistently that the NM incompressibility K should be around 250 MeV which implies a rather soft nuclear Equation of State (EOS). To probe the symmetry part of the nuclear EOS, we have used the isovector coupling to link the isospin dependence of the proton optical potential to the cross section of (p,n) charge-exchange reactions exciting the isobaric analog states in nuclei of different mass regions. With the isospin dependence of the NN interaction fine tuned to reproduce the charge exchange data, a realistic estimate of the NM symmetry energy has been made.

Given the known transition strengths of the 2+ and 3- states of 16O well determined from the (e,e') data, the DWBA description of the inelastic data over the whole angular range was possible only if the absorption in the exit channels is significantly increased (especially, for the 16O+16O(2+) exit channel). Although the refractive pattern of the inelastic 16O+16O scattering was found to be less pronounced compared to that observed in the elastic scattering channel, a clear remnant of the main rainbow maximum could still be seen in the inelastic cross section at Elab = 350 - 704 MeV.

We have used the isovector coupling to link the isospin dependence of 6He+p optical potential to the cross section of p(6He,6Li*)n reaction exciting the 0+ isobaric analog state (IAS) at 3.563 MeV in 6Li. Based on these results and the Hartree-Fock calculation of asymmetric nuclear matter using the same isospin-dependent effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, we were able to confirm that the most realistic value of the symmetry energy Esym is around 31 MeV. Our analysis has also shown that the measured charge exchange p(6He,6Li*)n data are quite sensitive to the halo tail of the 6He density used in the folding calculation and the IAS of 6Li is likely to have a halo structure similar to that established for the ground state of 6He.

Elastic $^{6}$He+$^4$He data measured at $E_{\rm c.m.}=11.6,$ 15.9, and 60.3 MeV have been analyzed within the coupled reaction channels (CRC) formalism, with the elastic-scattering and two-neutron ($2n$) transfer amplitudes coherently included. Contributions from the direct (one-step) and sequential (two-step) $2n$-transfers were treated explicitly based on a realistic assumption for the $2n$-transfer form factor. The oscillatory pattern observed in $^4$He($^6$He,$^6$He)$^4$He angular distribution at low energies was found to be due to an interference between the elastic scattering and $2n$-transfer amplitudes. Our CRC analysis shows consistently that the direct $2n$-transfer strongly dominates over the sequential transfer and thus confirms the dominance of 2$n-^4$He configuration over the $n-^5$He one in the $^6$He wave function. This result suggests a strong clusterization of the two valence neutrons and allows, therefore, a reliable estimate for the \emph{di-neutron} spectroscopic amplitude.

Fully quantal calculations of the total reaction cross sections \sigR and interaction cross sections \sigI, induced by stable and unstable He, Li, C and O isotopes on $^{12}$C target at $E_{\rm lab}\approx 0.8$ and 1 GeV/nucleon have been performed, for the first time, in the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) using the microscopic \emph{complex} optical potential and inelastic form factors given by the folding model. Realistic nuclear densities for the projectiles and $^{12}$C target as well as the complex $t$-matrix parameterization of free nucleon-nucleon interaction by Franey and Love were used as inputs of the folding calculation. Our \emph{parameter-free} folding + DWIA approach has been shown to give a very good account (within 1--2%) of the experimental \sigI measured at these energies for the stable, strongly bound isotopes. With the antisymmetrization of the dinuclear system properly taken into account, this microscopic approach is shown to be more accurate than the simple optical limit of Glauber model that was widely used to infer the nuclear radii from the measured \sigI. Therefore, the results obtained for the nuclear radii of neutron-rich isotopes under study can be of interest for further nuclear structure studies.

The value of the alpha spectroscopic factor (S_alpha) of the 6.356 MeV 1/2+ state of 17O is believed to have significant astrophysical implications due to the importance of the 13C(alpha,n)16O reaction as a possible source of neutron production for the s process. To further study this effect, an accurate measurement of the 13C(6Li,d)17O reaction at E_lab = 60 MeV has been performed recently by Kubono et al., who found a new value for the spectroscopic factor of the 6.356 MeV 1/2+ state of 17O based on a distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis of these data. This new value, S_alpha approximately = 0.011, is surprisingly much smaller than those used previously in astrophysical calculations (S_alpha approximately = 0.3-0.7) and thus poses a serious question as to the role of the 13C(alpha,n)16O reaction as a source of neutron production. In this work we perform a detailed analysis of the same 13C(6Li,d)17O data within the DWBA as well as the coupled reaction channel (CRC) formalism. Our analysis yields an S_alpha value of over an order of magnitude larger than that of Kubono et al. for the 6.356 MeV 1/2+ state of 17O.

A compact approach based on the folding model is suggested for the determination of the isoscalar and isovector transition strengths of the low-lying ($ΔS=ΔT=0$) excitations induced by inelastic proton scattering measured with exotic beams. Our analysis of the recently measured inelastic $^{18,20}$O+p scattering data at $E_{\rm lab}=30$ and 43 MeV/nucleon has given for the first time an accurate estimate of the isoscalar $β_0$ and isovector $β_1$ deformation parameters (which cannot be determined from the (p,p') data alone by standard methods) for 2$^+_1$ and $3^-_1$ excited states in $^{18,20}$O. Quite strong isovector mixing was found in the 2$^+_1$ inelastic $^{20}$O+p scattering channel, where the strength of the isovector form factor $F_1$ (prototype of the Lane potential) corresponds to a $β_1$ value almost 3 times larger than $β_0$ and a ratio of nuclear transition matrix elements $M_n/M_p\simeq 4.2$.

The folding formalism for the nucleon-nucleus optical potential and inelastic form factor is applied to study elastic and inelastic proton scattering on 30-40S isotopes. A recently developed realistic density dependent M3Y interaction, well tested in the folding analysis of nucleus-nucleus elastic and inelastic scattering, is used as effective NN interaction. The nuclear ground state and transition densities (for the 2+ excitations in Sulfur isotopes) are obtained in the Hartree-Fock-BCS and QRPA approaches, respectively. The best fit ratios of transition moments Mn/Mp for the lowest 2+ states in Sulfur isotopes are compared to those obtained earlier in the DWBA analysis of the same data using the same structure model and inelastic form factors obtained with the JLM effective interaction. Our folding+DWBA analysis has shown quite a strong isovector mixing in the elastic and inelastic scattering channels for the neutron rich 38,40S nuclei. In particular, the relative strength of the isovector part of the transition potential required by the inelastic p+38S data is significantly stronger than that obtained with the corresponding QRPA transition density.
