The Internet of Things (IoT) and massive IoT systems are key to sixth-generation (6G) networks due to dense connectivity, ultra-reliability, low latency, and high throughput. Artificial intelligence, including deep learning and machine learning, offers solutions for optimizing and deploying cutting-edge technologies for future radio communications. However, these techniques are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, leading to degraded performance and erroneous predictions, outcomes unacceptable for ubiquitous networks. This survey extensively addresses adversarial attacks and defense methods in 6G network-assisted IoT systems. The theoretical background and up-to-date research on adversarial attacks and defenses are discussed. Furthermore, we provide Monte Carlo simulations to validate the effectiveness of adversarial attacks compared to jamming attacks. Additionally, we examine the vulnerability of 6G IoT systems by demonstrating attack strategies applicable to key technologies, including reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)/cell-free massive MIMO, satellites, the metaverse, and semantic communications. Finally, we outline the challenges and future developments associated with adversarial attacks and defenses in 6G IoT systems.

Wireless communication highly depends on the cellular ground base station (GBS). A failure of the cellular GBS, fully or partially, during natural or man-made disasters creates a communication gap in the disaster-affected areas. In such situations, public safety communication (PSC) can significantly save the national infrastructure, property, and lives. Throughout emergencies, the PSC can provide mission-critical communication and video transmission services in the affected area. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as flying base stations (UAV-BSs) are particularly suitable for PSC services as they are flexible, mobile, and easily deployable. This manuscript considers a multi-UAV-assisted PSC network with an observational UAV receiving videos from the affected area's ground users (AGUs) and transmitting them to the nearby GBS via a relay UAV. The objective of the proposed study is to maximize the average utility of the video streams generated by the AGUs upon reaching the GBS. This is achieved by optimizing the positions of the observational and relay UAVs, as well as the distribution of communication resources, such as bandwidth, and transmit power, while satisfying the system-designed constraints, such as transmission rate, rate outage probability, transmit power budget, and available bandwidth. To this end, a joint UAVs placement and resource allocation problem is mathematically formulated. The proposed problem poses a significant challenge for a solution. Considering the block coordinate descent and successive convex approximation techniques, an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed. Finally, simulation results are provided which show that our proposed approach outperforms the existing methods.

As sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication networks evolve, privacy concerns are expected due to the transmission of vast amounts of security-sensitive private information. In this context, a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) emerges as a promising technology capable of enhancing transmission efficiency and strengthening information security. This study demonstrates how RISs can play a crucial role in making 6G networks more secure against eavesdrop** attacks. We discuss the fundamentals, and standardization aspects of RISs, along with an in-depth analysis of physical-layer security (PLS). Our discussion centers on PLS design using RIS, highlighting aspects like beamforming, resource allocation, artificial noise, and cooperative communications. We also identify the research issues, propose potential solutions, and explore future perspectives. Finally, numerical results are provided to support our discussions and demonstrate the enhanced security enabled by RIS.

Sixth-generation (6G) networks pose substantial security risks because confidential information is transmitted over wireless channels with a broadcast nature, and various attack vectors emerge. Physical layer security (PLS) exploits the dynamic characteristics of wireless environments to provide secure communications, while reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can facilitate PLS by controlling wireless transmissions. With RIS-aided PLS, a lightweight security solution can be designed for low-end Internet of Things (IoT) devices, depending on the design scenario and communication objective. This article discusses RIS-aided PLS designs for 6G-IoT networks against eavesdrop** and jamming attacks. The theoretical background and literature review of RIS-aided PLS are discussed, and design solutions related to resource allocation, beamforming, artificial noise, and cooperative communication are presented. We provide simulation results to show the effectiveness of RIS in terms of PLS. In addition, we examine the research issues and possible solutions for RIS modeling, channel modeling and estimation, optimization, and machine learning. Finally, we discuss recent advances, including STAR-RIS and malicious RIS.

Blinding eye diseases are often correlated with altered retinal morphology, which can be clinically identified by segmenting retinal structures in fundus images. However, current methodologies often fall short in accurately segmenting delicate vessels. Although deep learning has shown promise in medical image segmentation, its reliance on repeated convolution and pooling operations can hinder the representation of edge information, ultimately limiting overall segmentation accuracy. In this paper, we propose a lightweight pixel-level CNN named LMBiS-Net for the segmentation of retinal vessels with an exceptionally low number of learnable parameters \textbf{(only 0.172 M)}. The network used multipath feature extraction blocks and incorporates bidirectional skip connections for the information flow between the encoder and decoder. Additionally, we have optimized the efficiency of the model by carefully selecting the number of filters to avoid filter overlap. This optimization significantly reduces training time and enhances computational efficiency. To assess the robustness and generalizability of LMBiS-Net, we performed comprehensive evaluations on various aspects of retinal images. Specifically, the model was subjected to rigorous tests to accurately segment retinal vessels, which play a vital role in ophthalmological diagnosis and treatment. By focusing on the retinal blood vessels, we were able to thoroughly analyze the performance and effectiveness of the LMBiS-Net model. The results of our tests demonstrate that LMBiS-Net is not only robust and generalizable but also capable of maintaining high levels of segmentation accuracy. These characteristics highlight the potential of LMBiS-Net as an efficient tool for high-speed and accurate segmentation of retinal images in various clinical applications.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently gained significant interest as an emerging technology for future wireless networks thanks to its potential for improving the coverage probability in challenging propagation environments. This paper studies an RIS-assisted propagation environment, where a source transmits data to a destination in the presence of a weak direct link. We analyze and compare RIS designs based on long-term and short-term channel statistics in terms of coverage probability and ergodic rate. For the considered optimization designs, we derive closed-form expressions for the coverage probability and ergodic rate, which explicitly unveil the impact of both the propagation environment and the RIS on the system performance. Besides the optimization of the RIS phase profile, we formulate an RIS placement optimization problem with the aim of maximizing the coverage probability by relying only on partial channel state information. An efficient algorithm is proposed based on the gradient ascent method. Simulation results are illustrated in order to corroborate the analytical framework and findings. The proposed RIS phase profile is shown to outperform several heuristic benchmarks in terms of outage probability and ergodic rate. In addition, the proposed RIS placement strategy provides an extra degree of freedom that remarkably improves system performance.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been considered as a promising technology for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks that can control wireless channels in a desirable way and significantly enhance the network performance. Simultaneous transmitting and reflecting-RISs (STAR-RISs) can overcome limitation of reflecting-only RISs by leveraging the higher design flexibility and full-space coverage. Despite the benefits, the modeling and analysis of STAR-RISs are complicated because of various control parameters for both transmission and reflection links. In this article, a general framework to facilitate the design and implementation of STAR-RISs in 6G scenarios and network topologies is presented. We provide a systematic introduction to the STAR-RIS operating protocols for different communication modes and discuss recent efforts to identify the research progress and combination solutions. Finally, we provide the design concepts, research challenges, potential solutions, and future directions related to the channel modeling, channel estimation, hardware implementations, modeling and limitations, and optimization.

Silicon sensors are the go-to technology for high-precision sensors in particle physics. But only recently low-noise silicon sensors with internal amplification became available. The so-called Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) sensors have been developed for applications in High Energy Physics, but lack two characteristics needed for the measurement of low-energy protons (<60 keV): a thin entrance window (in the order of tens of nm) and the efficient amplification of signals created near the sensor's surface (in a depth below 1 um). In this paper we present the so-called proton Low Gain Avalanche Detector (pLGAD) sensor concept and some results from characterization of the first prototypes of the sensor. The pLGAD is specifically designed to detect low-energy protons, and other low-penetrating particles. It will have a higher detection efficiency than non-silicon technologies, and promises to be a lot cheaper and easier to operate than competing silicon technologies.

The shape of the proton and electron spectra can inter alia be used for the determination of the electron-antineutrino correlation coefficient $a$ and the Fierz interference term $b$, respectively. These observables can in turn be used to test the Standard Model of Particle Physics and to search for extensions thereof. NoMoS utilizes the $R \times B$ drift effect present in curved magnetic fields, which disperses charged particles according to their momentum. In this paper, we report on selected recent investigations that were conducted with regard to the magnet design and the detection system.
