We investigate the Cherenkov radiation by a charge uniformly moving inside a dielectric cylindrical channel in a homogeneous medium. The expressions for the Fourier components of the electric and magnetic fields are derived by using the electromagnetic field Green tensor. The spectral distribution of the Cherenkov radiation intensity in the exterior medium is studied for the general case of frequency dispersion of the interior and exterior dielectric functions. It is shown that, under certain conditions on the dielectric permittivities, strong narrow peaks appear in the spectral distribution. The spectral locations of those peaks are specified and their heights and widths are estimated analytically on the base of the dispersion equation for the electromagnetic eigenmodes of the cylinder.

We investigate the emission of surface polaritons (SPs) by a charged particle moving inside a dielectric cylinder parallel to its axis. It is assumed that the cylinder is immersed into a homogeneous medium with negative dielectric permittivity in the spectral range under consideration (active medium). The expressions for scalar and vector potentials and for electromagnetic field strengths are provided inside and outside the cylinder. Those fields are expressed in terms of the SP eigenmodes of the waveguide and we give detailed analysis for their properties. The SP energy fluxes through the plane perpendicular to the cylinder axis are evaluated in the interior and exterior media. The energy flux is directed towards the charge motion inside the cylinder and towards the opposite direction in the exterior region. The relativistic effects may essentially increase the radiated energy. Important features of relativistic effects include the possibility of essential increase of the radiated energy, the narrowing the confinement region of the SP fields near the cylinder surface in the exterior region, enlarging the frequency range for radiated SPs, and the decrease of the cutoff factor for radiation at small wavelengths compared with the waveguide radius. The general results are specified for the Drude dispersion in the exterior medium. By using the Green tensor we also evaluate the total energy losses of the charged particle for general case of the interior and exterior dielectric functions. The corresponding results are compared with those previously discussed in the literature. The numerical data are presented in terms of scale invariant quantities that allows to clarify the features of the SP radiation for different values of the waveguide radius.

We investigate the electromagnetic radiation from a chain of relativistic charged particles uniformly rotating along equatorial orbit around a dielectric ball. For weak absorption of radiation in the ball material, at certain rotation frequency the radiation intensity becomes significantly higher than the corresponding value for a chain of charges rotating in free space or in a transparent medium with the same dielectric constant as that for the ball material. In the case of an equidistant distribution of charged particles along the orbit we determine the values of parameters of the problem for which the charges in the chain emit coherently. It is shown that the radiation intensity on a given harmonic increases in proportion to the square of the number of emitting charges. We also show that the relative shifts in the particles locations up to 10\% do not destroy the coherence properties of the radiation. It is demonstrated that the coherence effects may also dominate in the radiation intensity for chains with non-equidistant distributions of particles. The numerical results obtained for different dielectric balls have revealed the emitted radiation to be in the GHz/THz frequency ranges. The high-power radiation of the chain propagates in the angular range with respect to the rotation plane determined by the Cherenkov condition for the velocity of the chain projection onto the ball surface.

We reduce the Djorgovski-Gurzadyan integral equation to a differential equation for the co-moving horizon and then, by means of the obtained explicit form for the luminosity distance, we construct the Hubble diagram for two classes of observational samples. For supernova and gamma-ray burst data we show that this approach provides viable predictions for distances up to $z \simeq 9$, quantitatively at least as good as those provided by the lambda cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) model. The Hubble parameter dependence $H(z)$ of the two models also reveals mutual crossing at $z=0.4018$, the interpretation of which is less evident.

We investigate the radiation from a charged particle moving outside a dielectric cylinder parallel to its axis. It is assumed that the cylinder is immersed into a homogeneous medium. The expressions are given for the vector potential and for the electric and magnetic fields. The spectral distributions are studied for three types of the radiations: (i) Cherenkov radiation (CR) in the exterior medium, (ii) radiation on the guided modes of the dielectric cylinder, and (iii) emission of surface polaritons. Unlike the first two types of radiations, there is no velocity threshold for the generation of surface polaritons. The corresponding radiation is present in the spectral range where the dielectric permittivities of the cylinder and surrounding medium have opposite signs. The spectral range of the emitted surface polaritons becomes narrower with decreasing energy of the particle. The general results are illustrated for a special case of the Drude model for dispersion of the dielectric permittivity of the cylinder. We show that the presence of the cylinder may lead to the appearance of strong narrow peaks in the spectral distribution of the CR in the exterior medium. The conditions are specified for the appearance of those peaks and the corresponding heights and widths are analytically estimated. The collective effects of particles in bunches are discussed.

We investigate the radiation from a bunch of relativistic electrons moving along the cylindrical waveguide axis, assuming that the waveguide is partially loaded by a medium with periodic dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. The spectral distribution of the radiation energy flux through the cross section of the waveguide is studied at large distances from the medium. The analysis is based on the corresponding exact solution of Maxwell equations for the case of a single electron moving along the waveguide axis. The results of numerical calculations are presented in the special case of layered medium consisting of a finite number of dielectric plates separated by vacuum gaps. We show that under certain conditions on the problem parameters the quasi-coherent Cherenkov radiation generated by the electron bunch inside the plates is self-amplified at certain waveguide modes. A visual explanation of this phenomenon is provided that reproduces the main features to rather good accuracy.

We study the angular distribution of the radiation from a relativistic charged particle uniformly rotating along an equatorial orbit around a dielectric ball. Earlier it was shown that for some values of the problem parameters and in the case of weak absorption in the ball material, the radiation intensity on a given harmonic can be essentially larger than that for the same charge rotating in the vacuum or in a homogeneous transparent medium having the same real part of dielectric permittivity as the ball material. The generation of such high power radiation is a consequence of the constructive superposition of electromagnetic oscillations of Cherenkov radiation induced near the trajectory of the particle and partially locked inside the ball. The angular distribution of the number of the emitted quanta is investigated for such high power radiation. It is shown that the radiation is mainly located in the angular range near the rotation plane determined by the Cherenkov condition for the velocity of the charge image on the ball surface. The numerical analysis is given for balls made of strontium titanate, melted quartz and teflon in the gigahertz and terahertz frequency ranges.

We study the infrared phases of $\mathcal{N}\,=\,1$ QCD$_3$ with gauge group $SU(N_c)$ and with the superpotential containing the mass term and the baryon operator. We restrict ourselves to the cases, when the number of flavors is equal to the number of colours, such that baryon operator is neutral under the global $SU(N_F)$. We also focus on the cases with two, three and four colours, such that the theory is perturbatively renormalizable. On the $SU(2)$ phase diagram we find two distinct CFTs with $\mathcal{N}\,=\,2$ supersymmetry, already known from the phase diagram of $SU(2)$ theory with one flavor. As for the $SU(3)$ phase diagram, consistency arguments lead us to conjecture that also there supersymmetry enhancement to $\mathcal{N}\,=\,2$ must occur. Finally, similar arguments lead us to conclude that also for the $SU(4)$ case we should observe supersymmetry enhancement at the fixed point. Yet, we find that this conclusion would be in contradiction with the renormalization group flow analysis. We relate this inconsistency between the two kinds of arguments to the fact that the theory is not UV complete.

We investigate the radiation from a charged particle rotating around a dielectric cylinder with a negative real part of dielectric permittivity. For the general case of frequency dispersion in dielectric permittivity, expressions are derived for the electric and magnetic fields and for the angular density of the radiation intensity on a given harmonic. Compared with the case of a cylinder with positive real part of the permittivity, new interesting features arise in the nonrelativistic limit and for the radiation at small angles with respect to the cylinder axis. Another feature is the appearance of sharp narrow peaks in the angular density of the radiation intensity for large harmonics. We analytically estimate the height, width and the location of these peaks. The influence of the imaginary part of dielectric permittivity on the characteristics of the peaks is discussed. The analytical results are illustrated by numerical examples. We show that the radiation intensity on a given harmonic, integrated over the angles, can be essentially amplified by the presence of the cylinder.

We propose a Higher Derivative Gauge (HDG) theory as an ultraviolet completion of the $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{(N_f-1)}$ NLSM. Tuning mass operators to zero, the HDG in the IR limit reaches to the critical $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{(N_f-1)}$. With partial tunings the HDG reaches either to the critical $U(N_f)$-Yukawa model or to the critical pure scalar QED (no Yukawa interactions).
We renormalize the HDG in its critical dimension $d=6$. We study the fixed points of the HDG in $d=6-2ε$ and we calculate the scaling dimensions of various observables finding a full agreement with the order $O(1/N_f)$ predictions of the corresponding critical models.

We also consider Quantum Electrodynamics with minimal supersymmetry. In this case the large $N_f$ scaling dimensions, extrapolated at $N_f{=}2$, agree quite well with the scaling dimensions of a dual supersymmetric Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model. We consider Quantum Electrodynamics with an even number $N_f$ of bosonic or fermionic flavors, allowing for interactions respecting at least $U(N_f/2)^2$ global symmetry. Both in the bosonic and in the fermionic case, we find four interacting fixed points: two with $U(N_f/2)^2$ symmetry, two with $U(N_f)$ symmetry. Large $N_f$ arguments suggest that, lowering $N_f$, all these fixed points merge pairwise and become complex CFT's. In the bosonic QED's the merging happens around $N_f\sim 9{-}11$ and does not break the global symmetry. In the fermionic QED's the merging happens around $N_f\sim3{-}7$ and breaks $U(N_f)$ to $U(N_f/2)^2$. When $N_f=2$, we show that all four bosonic fixed points are one-to-one dual to the fermionic fixed points. The merging pattern suggested at large $N_f$ is consistent with the four $N_f=2$ boson $\lra$ fermion dualities, providing support to the validity of the scenario.

We summarize a laser-ranged satellite test of frame-dragging, a prediction of General Relativity, and then concentrate on the estimate of thermal thrust, an important perturbation affecting the accuracy of the test. The frame dragging study analysed 3.5 years of data from the LARES satellite and a longer period of time for the two LAGEOS satellites. Using the gravity field GGM05S obtained via the Grace mission, which measures the Earth's gravitational field, the prediction of General Relativity is confirmed with a 1-$σ$ formal error of 0.002, and a systematic error of 0.05. The result for the value of the frame dragging around the Earth is $μ$ = 0.994, compared to $μ$ = 1 predicted by General Relativity. The thermal force model assumes heat flow from the sun (visual) and from Earth (IR) to the satellite core and to the fused silica reflectors on the satellite, and reradiation into space. For a roughly current epoch (days 1460 - 1580 after launch) we calculate an average along-track drag of -0.50 $pm/s^{2}$.

Our result is obtained using about 3.5 years of laser-ranged observations of the LARES, LAGEOS and LAGEOS 2 laser-ranged satellites together with the Earth's gravity field model GGM05S produced by the space geodesy mission GRACE. We measure $μ= (0.994 \pm 0.002) \pm 0.05$, where $μ$ is the Earth's dragging of inertial frames normalized to its General Relativity value, 0.002 is the 1-sigma formal error and 0.05 is the estimated systematic error mainly due to the uncertainties in the Earth's gravity model GGM05S. Our result is in agreement with the prediction of General Relativity.

Being almost frequency-independent, these temperature asymmetries are indicative of a Doppler-induced effect regarding the line-of-sight dynamics on the halo scale, the ejections from the galactic center and, possibly, even the tidal interaction with M81 galaxy. The temperature asymmetry thus acts as a model-independent tool to reveal the bulk dynamics in nearby edge-on spiral galaxies, like the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect for clusters of galaxies.

That transparent parameter - the temperature asymmetry - thus has to carry a principal information, i.e. indication on the line-of-sight bulk motion of the lobes, while the increase of that asymmetry at smaller radii reveals the differential dynamics of the lobes as expected at ejections from the center.

The shell structure is non-Gaussian at a 4σconfidence level. Such behavior of the K-map supports the void nature of the cold spot. The applied method can be used for tracing voids that have no signatures in redshift surveys.

We also investigate the recent issue raised in Rubin and Loeb (2014) about the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect from the diffuse hot gas in the Local Group, predicted to generate a hot spot of a few degrees size in the CMB maps in the direction of M31, where the free electron optical depth gets the maximum value. We also consider the issue whether in the opposite direction with respect to the M31 galaxy the same effect induces a minimum in temperature in the Planck's maps of the sky. We find that the Planck's data at 100 GHz show an effect even larger than that expected.

Expressions for the spectral distribution of radiation passing throw the transverse section of waveguide at large distances from the laminated material are derived with no limitations on the amplitude and variation profile of the layered medium permittivity and permeability. Numerical results for layered material consisting of dielectric plates alternated with vacuum gaps are given. X-ray imaging is in particular a reliable means to discover new clusters, and large X-ray surveys are now available. Considering XMM-Newton data for a sample of 40 Abell clusters, we show that their analysis with a Kolmogorov distribution can provide a distinctive signature for galaxy clusters. The Kolmogorov method is sensitive to the correlations in the cluster X-ray properties and can therefore be used for their identification, thus allowing to search reliably for clusters in a simple way.

Data on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) had a profound impact on the understanding of a variety of physical processes in the early phases of the Universe and on the estimation of the cosmological parameters. Here, the 7-year WMAP data are used to trace the disk and the halo of the nearby giant spiral galaxy M31. We analyzed the temperature excess in three WMAP bands (W, V, and Q) by dividing the region of the sky around M31 into several concentric circular areas. We studied the robustness of the detected temperature excess by considering 500 random control fields in the real WMAP maps and simulating 500 sky maps from the best-fitted cosmological parameters. By comparing the obtained temperature contrast profiles with the real ones towards the M31 galaxy, we find that the temperature asymmetry in the M31 disk is fairly robust, while the effect in the halo is weaker. An asymmetry in the mean microwave temperature in the M31 disk along the direction of the M31 rotation is observed with a temperature contrast up to about 130 microK/pixel. We also find a temperature asymmetry in the M31 halo, which is much weaker than for the disk, up to a galactocentric distance of about 10 degrees (120 kpc) with a peak temperature contrast of about 40 microK/pixel. Although the confidence level of the signal is not high, if estimated purely statistically, which could be expected due to the weakness of the effect, the geometrical structure of the temperature asymmetry points towards a definite effect modulated by the rotation of the M31 halo. This result might open a new way to probe these relatively less studied galactic objects using high-accuracy CMB measurements, such as those with the Planck satellite or planned balloon-based experiments, which could prove or disprove our conclusions.

The cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation is characterized by well-established scales, the 2.7 K temperature of the Planckian spectrum and the $10^{-5}$ amplitude of the temperature anisotropy. These features were instrumental in indicating the hot and equilibrium phases of the early history of the Universe and its large scale isotropy, respectively. We now reveal one more intrinsic scale in CMB properties. We introduce a method developed originally by Kolmogorov, that quantifies a degree of randomness (chaos) in a set of numbers, such as measurements of the CMB temperature in some region. Considering CMB as a composition of random and regular signals, we solve the inverse problem of recovering of their mutual fractions from the temperature sky maps. Deriving the empirical Kolmogorov's function in the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe's maps, we obtain the fraction of the random signal to be about 20 per cent, i.e. the cosmological sky is a weakly random one. The paper is dedicated to the memory of Vladimir Arnold (1937-2010).

When the electrons stored in the ring of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF, Grenoble) scatter on a laser beam (Compton scattering in flight) the lower energy of the scattered electron spectra, the Compton Edge (CE), is given by the two body photon-electron relativistic kinematics and depends on the velocity of light. A precision measurement of the position of this CE as a function of the daily variations of the direction of the electron beam in an absolute reference frame provides a one-way test of Relativistic Kinematics and the isotropy of the velocity of light. The results of GRAAL-ESRF measurements improve the previously existing one-way limits, thus showing the efficiency of this method and the interest of further studies in this direction.

The interest for CMB Kolmogorov map is that it can carry direct information about voids in the matter distribution, so that the correlations in the distribution of voids have to be reflected in the power spectrum. Although limited by the angular resolution of the WMAP, this analysis shows the possibility of acquiring this crucial information via CMB maps. Even the already obtained behavior, some of which is absent in the simulated maps, can influence the development of views on the void correlations at the large-scale web formation.

The plane-mirror symmetry previously noticed in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy maps of Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe is shown to possess certain anomalous properties. The degree of the randomness determined by the Kolmogorov stochasticity parameter in the both symmetry regions appears to have identical values which, however, essentially differ from the corresponding values for other sky regions. If the mirroring were of cosmological origin, this would imply either additional randomizing properties in those directions of the Universe or their different line-of-sight depth. This analysis also provides a way to test the hypothesis of a link between the nature of dark energy and inhomogeneities.

A new map of the sky representing the degree of randomness in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature has been obtained. The map based on estimation of the Kolmogorov stochasticity parameter clearly distinguishes the contribution of the Galactic disk from the CMB and reveals regions of various degrees of randomness that can reflect the properties of inhomogeneities in the Universe. For example, among the high randomness regions is the southern non-Gaussian anomaly, the Cold Spot, with a stratification expected for the voids. Existence of its counterpart, a Northern Cold Spot with almost identical randomness properties among other low-temperature regions is revealed. By its informative power, Kolmogorov's map can be complementary to the CMB temperature and polarization sky maps.

We continue investigation of the hidden plane-mirror symmetry in the distribution of excursion sets in cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropy maps, previously noticed in the three-year data of the Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe (WMAP), using the WMAP 5 years maps. The symmetry is shown to have higher significance, χ^2 < 1.7, for low multipoles \ell < 5, while disappearing at larger multipoles, χ^2 > 3.5 for \ell > 10. The study of the sum and difference maps of temperature inhomogeneity regions, along with simulated maps, confirms its existence. The properties of these mirroring symmetries are compatible with those produced by the Sachs-Wolfe effect in the presence of an anomalously large component of horizon-size density perturbations, independent of one of the spatial coordinates, and/or a slab-like spatial topology of the Universe.

The radiation from a charge moving along a helical trajectory inside a cylindrical hole in homogeneous dielectric medium is investigated. Prompted by availability of materials with large dielectric permittivity $ε$ and small absorption, we discuss the features of this type of radiation for media with $ε\gg 1$. It is shown that there are high peaks in the angular distribution of radiation intensity at well-defined harmonics. The conditions are specified for the cavity-to-helix radii ratio, $ρ_{1}/ρ_{0}$, under which the angle-integrated radiation intensity on some harmonics exceeds that in the empty space. Though the amplification of radiation intensity increases with increasing $ε$, the corresponding "resonant" values of $ρ_{1}/ρ_{0}$ ratio are practically independent of the dielectric permittivity of surrounding medium. It is shown that an analogous amplification of radiation takes place essentially for the same values of $ρ_{1}/ρ_{0}$ also for the radiation in a cylindrical waveguide with conducting walls. An explanation of this phenomenon is given.

We study inhomogeneities in the distribution of the excursion sets in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature maps obtained by the three years survey of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). At temperature thresholds |T|<90 μK, the distributions of the excursion sets with over 200 pixels are concentrated in two regions, nearly at the antipodes, with galactic coordinates l= 94^\circ.7, b= 34^\circ.4 and l= 279^\circ.8, b= -29^\circ.2. The centers of these two regions drift towards the equator when the temperature threshold is increased. The centers are located close to one of the vectors of \ell =3 multipole. The two patterns of the substructures in the distribution of the excursion sets are mirrored, with χ^2=0.7-1.5. There is no obvious origin of this effect in the noise structure of WMAP, and there is no evidence for a dependence on the galactic cut. Would this effect be cosmological, it could be an indication of an anomalously large component of horizon-size density perturbations, independent of one of the spatial coordinates, and/or of a non-trivial slab-like spatial topology of the Universe.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) being the most luminous among known cosmic objects carry an essential potential for cosmological studies if properly used as standard candles. In this paper we test with GRBs the cosmological predictions of the Gurzadyan-Xue (GX) model of dark energy, a novel theory that predicts, without any free parameters, the current vacuum fluctuation energy density close to the value inferred from the SNIa observations. We also compare the GX results with those predicted by the concordance scenario $Λ$-CDM. According to the statistical approach by Schaefer (2007), the use of several empirical relations obtained from GRBs observables, after a consistent calibration for a specific model, enables one to probe current cosmological models. Based on this recently introduced method, we use the 69 GRBs sample collected by Schaefer (2007); and the most recently released SWIFT satellite data (Sakamoto et al. 2007) together with the 41 GRBs sample collected by Rizzuto et al. (2007), which has the more firmly determined redshifts. Both data samples span a distance scale up to redshift about 7. We show that the GX models are compatible with the Hubble diagram of the Schaefer (2007) 69 GRBs sample. Such adjustment is almost identical to the one for the concordance $Λ$-CDM.

Abstract:
We derive luminosity distance equation in Gurzadyan-Xue cosmological models and compared it with available supernovae and radio galaxies data sets. We found that the luminosity distance does not depend explicitly the speed of light and the gravitation constant, and depends only on the matter parameter (GX-invariant) and curvature.

Abstract:
Analysis of cosmological solutions of GX dark energy models shows the presence of a separatrix in the phase space of solutions which divides them into two classes: Friedmannian-like with initial singularity and non-Friedmannian solutions. The invariants are found, that reveal the intrinsic symmetry in GX models.

We have derived the invariants of cosmological models with Gurzadyan-Xue dark energy, along with the solutions for any time dependent light speed and gravitational constant. The correspondence of the invariants with the separatrices found earlier for the GX-models in \cite{Ver06a} is shown, and hence the basis of then detected hidden symmetry is now revealed. Solutions are derived both for radiation and matter models, as well as with both components. It is interesting that, the solutions for the scale factor do not depend on the gravitational constant but only on the 'time evolution' of the speed of light. GX-invariants act as efficient tools describing the models and the phases of the cosmological expansion.
